Howdy Im having trouble with the ALSA system on my laptop Just upgraded to suspend2-sources-2622-r1 Earlier I

yeah! good idea :]

hello, i’m having trouble with bunzip2 on 64 bit

you’re the last thing I want to see flying out of my mouth and onto the pavement

uh

with vm and windows

where the fsck do i get a floppy?!
*G*

it freezes the system when extracting large archives

lol
your on your own there my friend =

wow, that’s not good… have you checked your logs to see what exactly is doing the global unwarming?

and you haven’t even seen my face, shame on you for judging me like that :P

cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, dvd-ram, usbsticks in various shapes, colors and flavors but no floppy

I want to more the entire /usr/portage to a network mount. anyone thinks its a bad plan ?

ah

my lap’s hd is running out of space

you just need one
i dunno if you can make a bootable usb drive :/

http://www.minix3.org/download/minix3_1_3a_ide_r2964.iso.bz2 extracting this freezes

yeah but do you still have 5′1/4 disks?

calling me a thing.

checking logs

nah, can’t be done

thanks, but I’d rather live to see my AMD64 run another day…

you’ll need two floppies btw fr0nk

any other with jackass skills?

if you can get them, you can do anything to your discs

HOLY GOD i found my “the secret of monkey island” disk
\o/

lol!
you can’t format that! :o

NO NO NO NO

Hi guys… i got a problem here.. hope someone helps me out. What happens is that when i run some apps full screen, like Blender or VirtualBox, the Gnome bars wont go away. I would like to know how to make them go to the bottom.

*G*

as long as you don’t have a computer with + 4gb ram i don’t see any reason to use it in 64bit mode

yeah, I’m pretty sure you can’t get more holy than god…

you’ll need to anyway mate

but i’ll try this in the win vm

because video encoding is wickedly faster on 64bit

i love 64bit
even in windows you can ‘feel’ the diffrence

feel the difference?

lol

ifit wasn’t for the driver issue, i’d mate with it

trust me… same CPU, 32bit binary will underperform a 64bit (video encoding) binary by 25-50%

what are you feeling with 64bit?

I put in a blank CD, ran ‘mount /mnt/cdrom’, got an error. mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read only. mount: no such file or directory. CD tray opens.

the future

also, because of kernel memory split, 64 bit has advantages with 2gb or more ram already

twice the size

loving and feeling.. you pervert

32 more ‘bits’

i believe in core2duo

lol

you can’t mount a blank cd

i’m making it sound worse…

then how do I burn a data cd?

which I have
‘man growisofs’
mzbot rorachan growisofs

mkisofs … && cdrecord –with-many -options

I have no idea if that does anything…

All members with an 64x edition raise a hand!

or use k3b

o/

pfff, you don’t need to MAKE the iso before you burn it, that’s what’s so great about growisofs

ow didn’t know that one but than again only have 1024 MB on both systems, so id most likely only be slowed down by the overhead

|o

so can anyone help me reproduce it (maybe offering its uptime as sacriffice)

oh stop that was politically incorrect

it will create + burn the iso in realtime, meaning you don’t have to have extra room for the iso

o\

ll
haha

No manual entry for growisofs.

which is why I *hate* the retarded way in which Mac OS X burns discs

But the CD tray hasn’t opened.

you’ll be arrested for that in europe

what, seriously…

i like cheesecake

Yeah.

one sec

and lurking

Ice_Wewe, you can pipe the output of mkisofs to cdrecord.

i never experienced a mac …

once you go mac
you die.
lol
i found it funny ¬_¬

you can try to extract it with some other program, such as 7z

http://pastebin.com/m52f4a0a0

“Operation not permitted”, but the volume does change. What could the problem be, i’ve never had this before.

then I died at age 3…

i experimented in college …with a mac

but i believe beryl and compiz-fusion makes mac users jo mad because they payed double the price a pc costs … bwahahaha

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: how’d it go?

lol
not bad

people do all sorts of crazy things in colege [LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE

hahaha
this is true
nah, actually i grew up on macs

actually when you look at the real costs, PCs are almost as expensive… ex. building a C2D vs buying an iMac

so it has some extra instructions for en/decoding video?

i. ahve extracted it in another x86 box, but the problem is that this shouldnt happen

my parents were mac fans in the early years

i always thought the hardware you get for the price was good

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: the Lisa II was my first computer, used of course, I’m not wiping my a** with $20s

could be hardware problem

i mean, right now i’m typing on a tiny tiny Sony vaio

it’s talking about DVDs…my computer doesn’t have a DVD drive.

haha

cost me nearly £2000 with insurance

I don’t know, but it’s sure faster

and i’d rather it was a mac

i need someone else to confirm

(without the mac)

yeah no shit

i’m using beryl and every time a mate visits me I show him beryl and he gets depressed because his vindows vista only has transparent window borders

it has more registers which speeds up certain calculations such as encryption or video encoding

growisofs will also burn CDs… look at the ISO9660 section

ours was a quadra 610
ahh system 7

yes but you also pay for the name and the exclusivity

because it’s so plasticy, the keyboard doesn’t light up….it’s really delicate
ah, good point.

beryl is for people who are compensating for something, or just like to waste energy

I was told to use k3b.

that we owned at least, i had used classics and SEs before

i’ll report it on bugzilla

like porsche, the parts are one of the best, but you also for “driving a porsche”

when you’re ready for a REAL window manager, build E17
sure, you can use k3b… growisofs is just the CLI way of making a CD. Growisofs is actually what k3b uses..

tried it in 2005 or so, did they made progress?

how is E17?

I never looked into E17
i like xfce ^_^

did you try to extract it with 7zip and the problem still persists?

yeah, last time i tried it, it ws still reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaly buggy

dooooooork

xfce4 + compiz-fusion = o.m.gah

which i knew it ouwld be going in

so people, suggestions. I can build a fileserver that’s a generic PIII for ~$200, or I can build a Mini-ITX file server based on a VIA board for ~$300… suggestions

I’m confused…total newb here. How do I burn a CD if the computer won’t recognize the blank CD?

on to what really matters. Faster or Slower compiling?

i use xfce on my ubuntu box

you’re trying to *mount* a blank CD, which has no filesystem… you don’t want to mount it, you want to *burn* it…

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: do you like it?

I’d suggest using k3b, since you’ve just declared your n00bness
sorry, n00bn355
you run E17 or I kill your beryl

I understand that…but how do I keep the CD to stay in the computer without popping out?

I don’t think there’s much difference

killall beryl

Ubuntu or xfce?

make your project in k3b, then hit burn, and then hit “Load” and it will load your blank CD

compiling depends on many things, such as disk/memory performance

assuming that it is A) A blank CD B) you have a CD burner, and C) your drive recognizes the media

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: both =P
http://www.osnews.com/story.php/10796/X-Window-Manager-Benchmarks-(E17-on-Top)/

heh

nice :o

still compiling is mainly a cpu thing at least that is what i thought

sorry I was just confused as to why the tray kept spitting out my CD. It’s burning now.

eh, ubuntu is decent, i still got love for gentoo though
depends on what im using linux for

I WIN!

as far as xfce is concerned, well, it makes ubuntu a quite a bit lighter and faster

heh, yah, not the best place to say you love ubuntu =P
yeah it certainly does
lol
“win”
so what is it, like another typie of fluxbox thing?

well duh! lol. i should try it with gentoo on my laptop

you still here?

wtf, i didnt say shit!

i read an article today
claiming ubuntu is killing the world of the linuchs

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: language.

my bad, sorry!

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: “as far as xfce is concerned, well, it makes ubuntu a quite a bit lighter and faster”
[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: I’ve got it in IRC LOG!

as compared to ubuntu with gnome…

is there someone that can help me to get the lpcm stream from a dvd into two seperate .wav files (since its longing that 80 mins) so i can burn them on an audio cd

sepArate*

topic folks, no distro or wm wars please

why two separate?

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: ah, got it… see I’m actually on a Ubuntu 6.06 machine right now… and yes, I’m sorry to admit that it is mine… actually it’s my main machine. But I just don’t have time to make the switch to Gentoo

BLASPHEMY!
lol

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: I’m going to switch during the Christmas break, I just don’t have time…

since its longer than 80 mins

how can i get alsalibs to compile in 32 bit for support for 32 bit apps on a 64 bit system?

yeah, thats why i use it for some servers

and only 80 mins on a cd
that was for you sorry

700mb cds have a playing time of 80 min

ahh, that’s no excuse
do it now mate

no no, CDs are measured in megabytes, not minutes

it’ll only take you three days to get it working
three whole days

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: well, I work 35 hours a week, and school starts in 6 days. I need this computer to do all my work… and I’m uncertain of how long it will take me to transition to Gentoo (along with all my installed (both binary and compiled) apps)

68h

AUDIO CD not mp3

audio cds are measured in minutes afaik

it is too

ive got ubuntu running my VMware java server hosting host, but ive got lots of Gentoo VMs

4h sleep

spat, rip it to one wav file, remove the header, split it at the 80 minute mark, add headers.

I don’t have 36 hours to spare

i did.

besides, this computer is busy doing tasks in the background

yeah, thats why i did my laptop earlier in the summer

and i’m reaping the benefits
terminal.

hi

anyone know why gtk+ won’t compile on my i386?

erm need sox for that?

no xfce/ no e17. not even xchat yet
lol

no, the amount of normal WAV you can fit on a 700MB cd is measured in minutes :p

I tried that stupid expat command for gtk+…

so you just want to split it

they have E17… ‘emerge enlightenment’

the transition to gentoo is esp. difficult/time consuming on mobile machines… especially ones with a semi buggy DST like my ASUS A8Jp

it’s just DR16

mencoder can probably do that
or sox

somebody could tell me how to disable debug messages from i2c modules (plaguing dmesg outout)

spat, I would use tail to remove the header, split to do the splitting, and mplayer to add the headers.

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: I just don’t have the time right now… but I’m am REALLY REALLY mad at Ubuntu…

i’ve JUST managed to get emerge -u world to work after installing around 6h ago for the fourth time today
my next step was to install slim and xfce

yeah?

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: here I have a system not quite 8 months old, and already I’m running into dependencies that can’t be resolved because my libraries at too old and there are no updates

but i might take a look into enlightenment now as well

don’t install DR16, save your time and just install E17 from CVS

dependency hell FTW!

DR16 is a joke

CVS?

[LnP-NW]ReVeNiDE: no, it just means I can’t install new packages

you’ve confused me with someone who uses linux regularly

yes… E17 runs a CVS tree, like most open source projects
oh sorry, it’s svn
www3.get-e.org

i use BSD to manage my servers. that’s about it

i found another floppy, could you please upload pm anywhere?

oooh, i get what you are saying, yeah, ive had issues similar to that as well
ive never used BSD
ive been wanting to try it

ok will do it with mencoder than however wiki doesn’t seem to cover that kind of stuff can you point me elsewhere?

spat, even just copying the original wav header to each split piece would probably work, since most wav parsers handle unexpected EOF properly.

#mplayer, or just search for like ‘editing with mencoder’

what flavor of BSD?

ah thank you
thank you both reisio, Draconx

can some help me fix my gentoo I have broken a lot of portage packages and at the moment Im using revdep-rebuild -X to fix it.I also have the problem fixing apache2 and mysql which also is down.

oh yeah, well I can update themes and restart my window manager (from the provided menu system) without loosing my X connection or my applications… :P

I can`t get running iptables on 2.6.22. I enabled ALL netfilter options in kernel and rebuilded iptables many times but i am still getting errors about unknown table “nat”.

lo; i have some confusion of grub.conf (hd0,0) syntax–could someone take a look at http://pastebin.ca/675291 ? First three lines are what my system will look like

back, sorry.
i’m on it
do you have winrar?
^ fr0nk

have you tried rebuilding the iptables userspace?

does somebody knows how to stop these messages on dmesg output? :i2c-adapter i2c-0: Transaction (post):…

last time I checked, it reads your kernel config to know which stuff to include

libexpat problems?

shal3r, sounds like you don’t have CONFIG_NF_NAT enabled.

looks like i2c verbose debug messages or something

yes got my whole system down

teach ironfoot495 expat

expat-2.0.1 is not ABI compatible with earlier versions. Run the following in bash to fix: “emerge -n1 ‘=portage-2.1.2.12′ portage-utils && emerge -qep world | grep –color=never -oFf (scanelf -plRBF ‘%F %n’ | awk ‘/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}’ | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e
“libtool\ncurl”) | xargs emerge -1″. If a specific package fails, “/msg mzbot faq remerge-deep” for advice (gtk+/pango are common).

teach ironfoot495 remerge-deep

If, while trying to fix the expat mess, a package won’t build then run the following (substituting “gtk+” with the name of whichever package that failed): “emerge -n portage-utils && grep -vxFf (emerge -qep system) (emerge -qep gtk+) | sed -rne ‘/^\[ebuild/{s/(^| )\[[^]]*\]( |$)//gp}’
| xargs qatom | awk ‘{print $1″/”$2}’ | xargs emerge -1″. Afterwards, run “emerge –resume” to continue.

finally! i’ve been having troubles connecting to freenode the past 2 days!
i was hoping someone could help me with circular dependencies..

Are there any nice gui tools for kde or something that will configure a multibutton mouse to do things?

Stick that in your bootdisc and smoke it

shal3r, zgrep CONFIG_NF_NAT /proc/config.gz

i received circular dependencies when trying to emerge genkernel, and so i emerged it using the -O flag.

lol, seriously though, you add it too the bootdisc’s floppy (if it fits, else you’ll need a second floppy) and run from the cmd “pqmagic”

I’ll comply thanx

then did genkernel –menuconfig to get a semi-tweaked kernel

let you know later how it worked!

Howdy. I’m having trouble with the ALSA system on my laptop. Just upgraded to suspend2-sources-2.6.22-r1. Earlier, I had updated to alsa-*-1.0.14*. I noticed that there’s a new set of options under “ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS” that aren’t in the Gentoo ALSA Guide. Any pointers?

some modules didn’t load properly, but that’s not the problem. when i try to emerge almost anything, i get circular dependencies. how do you get rid of them?

there are 900+ people on this channel, i suggest you stop hitting return so often, or nobody’s gonna bother to try to keep up with what you’re saying. state your problem, as it stands now.
uthere are 900+ people on this channel, i suggest you stop hitting return so often, or nobody’s gonna bother to try to keep up with what you’re saying. state your problem, as it stands now./u

shal3r, if that produced no output, then the kernel you are running does not have nat enabled.

really, i need advice on my (hd0,0) v (hd0,2) problem. I dont want nothing to load on boot =P

strange, becouse it is in .config and i recompiled kernel

oK, can’t emerge anything due to circular dependencies. need help.

anyone have a nice autoconf howto

sorry, that I can’t help you with, i don’t do grub.

shal3r, did you install and boot the kernel after compiling it?

i dont know how to make Makefiles and configure scripts

no, Aug30 02:04:38
no, only menuconfig

i get the feeling MANY people don’t grasp the conplexities of automake, or we’d have far fewer packages doing a check for a fortran compiler. (:

Skunky, another lilo fan?

i don’t understand what details you are wanting Skunky, if you don’t want to help, atleast you’re honest. can someone help me solve the circular dependencies?

I started using linux with slackware, when the distro choices were slackware or sls. lilo was the only option. never saw any reason to change.

circular deps is one of the only times that it’s legitimate to put use flags on the command line before emerge

that would be autoconf, and yes, again, can you say over complicated? :P

I am unconvinced that he’s got circular deps. but since he refuses to give any info, we’ll never know.

Skunky, supposedly new “features”

is E17 a desktop enviroment in it’s own right like gnome or kde?

sure, for people who want to dual-boot their boxes, and that kind of stuff. I don’t dual-boot linux boxes. I don’t boot from secondary hard drives. I don’t boot from removable media… I don’t need anything other than plain, boring, old lilo. (:

John, Window Manager

afaik it’s just a wm, not a full de but I could be wrong since I haven’t played with it

not really.

hm

technically it’s a wm, but it’s rapidly becoming a DE

heh

ah right

so when i go from a 1680×1050 X session back to console, my screen gets all fuxored. i think it has something to do with vesafb only supporting 1280×1024. i’m using nvidia drivers btw. any help would be appreciated

there is a file manager etc etc, but they arent that well integrated.

thanks guys =]

most ‘window managers’ aren’t _just_ window managers, as it happens
lots come with extra apps

“(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz is in reality /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz since (hd0,0) is /boot.”

hi, is there a way to say in the .zshrc that it should use “export $TERM=rxvt” always but if it was startet in screen it should use $TERM=screen?

that helps clarify a bit

‘e’ has many many apps tailored specifically to it, and together you would have a DE

so that only happens when your X session is 1680×1050? can you rectify the situation by setting a new video mode with fbset?

privmsgd John about “expat”

*that* is how

haha

so the configure is specific to automake too?

but don’t run the whole command, just give me the bit I asked for

hehehe

looks like i will make a suicide becouse of iptables.

iptables isn’t worth your life, man

no, you could write your own configure script, but autotools refers to autoconf and automake used together as they usually are…in fact, I’ve never seen a package use only one of the two, it either uses autotools or not

look at shorewall

are they worth last 5 hours of my life?

(i’m in windows now), what will fbset do? i’m using nvidia for x, and the console is completely unusable after i kill x

maybe, if you have a quest for something (security? knowledge? pain?)

i mean, technically it’s still working, i just can’t make out what’s on the screen

pain…

nah – I’d spend my last 5 hours with something way … more exciting…

fbset will set video modes for the framebuffer. use ssh or type blindly if you can’t see anything on the console

are you saying iptabes isn’t exciting?
lol

heh, yeah, I’d go bungee jumping, too

i don’t know what autotools vs automake is and such. that howto you gave me, the mrbook one, that last Makefile, what’s the $ (for target .cpp.o: $(CC) $(CFLAGS) $ -o $@) I don’t understand the $@ and what a dereference is

i was under the impression that vesafb couldn’t do more than 1280×1024?

it tells me:

ah, you mean for me to set it back to that

qfile: No such file or directory

woo, new version of RealPlayer is out!

$ is the dependencies, $@ is the target

I’m talking more about humping everything that moves or something like that *blushes*

vesa defines at least one mode (1600×1200) larger than 1280×1024

If I may ask, why are you asking these kinds of questions in #gentoo?

emerge portage-utils and try again

i’m sorry . . . i was keeping a previous conversation alive

If I’d knew I’d kick the bucket in 5 hours…

yeah, I guess it is kinda off-topic

i didn’t know where else to ask, #automake didn’t exist
kick me too
err, not /kick though

okay =P

unless you want to .

It’s ok, we’re forgiving people.

anything suspicous?

i dont know how to read a manpage no.

gettext is another evil monster like expat

i was also under the impression that one can not use vesafb-tng with nvidia?

not quite as bad, though

hello

Linux 2.6.22, iptables 1.3.8. I have everything about netfilter enabled in kernel and, for example, `zgrep NF_NAT /proc/configz` returns “CONFIG_NF_NAT=y”. But iptables still aren`t working becouse of “can’t initialize iptables table `nat`”. Looks like i will make a suicide.

lol at ‘aren’t’

you can’t use nvidiafb with nvidia binary drivers, and vesafb-tng won’t work on amd64. but all other combinations should work

ahh, all this infomation

bleh

i feel like a fat bloated sponge
lol

yeah, i am not good at english

gettext & expat is evil
got it
lol

well that’s good to know

well it just should have been isn’t that’s all. iptables is just one thing, it’s the name of the program

iptables are evil. They are trying to kill me.

is* :P

hi room. have an emerge question

time to recompile some kernelage

thanks for lesson

thanks chithead

lol

did you upgrade linux-kernel-headers recently? maybe try to rebuild iptables

i can handle iptables. just takes a bit of practise
especialy the harder stuff

_necessary_ evils

hehehe

i rebuilded iptables many many times

quickpkg gettext is the next step

is there a command to download packages AND dependencies without merging?

emerge -f

quickpkg
that rings a bell.
something to do with reverting back when you screw up

yes, that will create a binary package of the gettext you already have

jeesh i finally found it

I’ve done as far as I know what you and mzbot requested is there a way to test and see if it has been effective?

man 1p make

are you talking about expat?

oh, i get it, it was used because the target was used as .cpp
err .cpp.o

thank you kojiro :]

didnt get the deps with that command. hmm

DONE
oh, sorry, caps

yes that’s correct.

You might also find the online/html manual more readable… http://www.gnu.org/software/make/manual/make.html

probably; thanks

I fixed my ALSA problems with hda_intel. alsa-lib-1.0.14a-r1 introduces new ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS variable, which is currently undefined. Adding all plugins to /etc/make.conf fixed the problem.

just run the part of what mzbot says inside ()

ok

it will output a list of packages that still contain stuff that links to the old expat

yeah, whats with the new alsa plugins?

tell me how to fix iptables

Sorry, you are not allowed to do that.

thanks

He said he still has problems, so I’m holding your point in escrow.

no, the newlines are important
heh

… ‘ /var/lib/portage/world
oh right, so one at a time?

john never ran my script before
no, all at once… here

you want the list?

Ah I see.. “DONE” referred merely to the quickpkg command. Jumped the gun, I did.

sorry, brain isn’t working. It’s like 2:30am

fgrep $’media-libs/fontconfig\nnet-irc/xchat\nsys-devel/gettext\nx11-libs/gtk+\nx11-libs/pango’ /var/lib/portage/world
run that exactly

ahhh
i follow now
thank you ^_^

I have a problem getting apache2 and php mysql web hosting back on line. I’ve tried quite a few forums but I have yet to get it up.

did you run the scanelf bit in the middle, like I said?

when I try to add a user with the group games and plugdev i get an error, useradd: invalud numeric argument ‘insert games/plugdev

that’s not a question, it’s a statement.

What is the full command you’re adding? (without password info)

() I didn’t really understand you but I did look for where it was located . I don’t know If it is correct could you show me oncew more?

faq expat

expat-2.0.1 is not ABI compatible with earlier versions. Run the following in bash to fix: “emerge -n1 ‘=portage-2.1.2.12′ portage-utils && emerge -qep world | grep –color=never -oFf (scanelf -plRBF ‘%F %n’ | awk ‘/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}’ | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e
“libtool\ncurl”) | xargs emerge -1″. If a specific package fails, “/msg mzbot faq remerge-deep” for advice (gtk+/pango are common).

It’s a work of art.

useradd -m -G users,wheel,audio,cdrom,portage,usb,video,games,plugdev -s /bin/bash username

(scanelf -plRBF…sort -u)
without the ( and )

what’s a good gentoo network setup package? hopefully equivalent to livecd’s net-setup

oh sorry, ????? is that better now? ;P

And does there exist group ‘plugdev’?

okay kojiro – what’s the next?

what was the output?

the handbook states that there is such group :p

anyone expert here on cable modems and docsis ?

What does `grep plugdev /etc/group` state? :P

run this -(scanelf -plRBF ‘%F %n’ | awk ‘/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}’ | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e “libtool\ncurl”) | xargs emerge -1

11-libs/gtk+\nx11-libs/pango’ /var/lib/portage/world
net-irc/xchat

groupadd plugdev anyway

or the whole thing?

almost

wait no

comes up as blank

i lie

just scanelf -plRBF ‘%F %n’ | awk ‘/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}’ | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u

the top line is what i typed xD

See kojiro’s command.

just net-irc/xchat

good, ok

Does anyone know of a linux program that is basically like WinSCP that uses an ncurses interface?

cheers

it gave me a list. what does it mean?

try mc

emerge -C media-libs/fontconfig net-irc/xchat sys-devel/gettext x11-libs/gtk+ x11-libs/pango && emerge -1 media-libs/fontconfig net-irc/xchat sys-devel/gettext x11-libs/gtk+ x11-libs/pango && emerge -n net-irc/xchat
those are packages that aren’t fixed yet
pastebin the list

ok coming up

mc?

yes

URL i don’t have it installed

http://gentoo-portage.com/app-misc/mc

Here’s the list http://rafb.net/p/FLIrh941.html

any of that stuff in your worldfile?

running :]

I not sure If I know where to check but the only one that seems important is mail-client/evolution
net-dns/avahi
I think early on I made a mistake and emerged kde along with gnome.

well, if you don’t want that stuff the fix is really easy
but anyway, unmerge everything on that list, and also unmerge apr, and then emerge -1 libtool apr anything else you want to keep that you unmerged

I really need apache2 and mysql back on line I’ve been fight to accompliush this for almost a week now!

that’s pretty easy: emerge -C apr apr-util && emerge -1 libtool apache && emerge -n apache

what packages contains lspci? :x

If I want to keep some of the one’s that are still broken what is the procedure?

If i have a image (made with ddrescue) of a whole drive, is there a way to mount on of the partitions in it?

just emerge again?
or emerge –unmerge and then emerge again?

acx, pciutils

unmerge them and emerge -1 them

ty

thanx

what’s a good disassembler?

so i’m trying to restrict gentoo from upgrading my kernel (vanilla) for me, and i added sys-kernel/vanilla-sources to package.mask and then sys-kernel/vanilla-sources.2.6.18 to package.provided.
why doesn’t it work anymore?

Hello.
What do I need to configure in order for /etc/resolv.conf to get set up correctly at boot?

How would I go about finding out why the rsyncable patch to gzip isn’t enabled?

/msg mzbot faq apr-util

I’m reading the Gentoo networking documentation, but I do not see anything about resolv.conf

okay kojiro, all done :]
no problems ^_^

run the scanelf bit again

Hi all. Is there a way to install gentoo from compiled binaries directly?

hm

testusr, yes, but you have to provide the binaries.

it doesn’t like the old scanelf line

if i’m only adding a module into the kernel, can I get away with simply running: make modules && make modules_install?

gives me proper useage functions

then something is wrong: what did you type?

Draconx, If I download the livedvd, will it have the compiled dvds on it?
Draconx – oops, i meant compiled packages

scanelf -plRBF ‘%F %n’ | awk ‘libexpat.so.0/{print $1}’ | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u

testusr, gentoo doesn’t provide binaries for most packages.

i think it’s qfile that is telling me now i’m not using it right
but it didn’t do that before

/usr/libexec/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed how can i fix my cups problem?

My goal is to determine the fastest way of going from booting off the cd to gui based desktop using Gentoo
is there an option that will allow for it – or am i to look at other distros if I want that?

that depends on whether you want Gentoo…or you just want a quick install

hmmm how do more than one USE flag in a command

it’s theoretically possible, but you’d need to find the binaries. Gentoo doesn’t provide them

for instance USE=mysql opengl emerge -pv x11-libs/qt-3*

*ahem*

Either you use a stage 3 install(if i recall the stage) which use precompiled packages

livecd

use quotes

vizo_xp, put quotes around the flags
like USE=”blah blah blah” emerge …

USE=”flag1 flag2″ but that is not recommended. put it in package.use instead

then after you set up your cfflags and use and re-emerge en recompile all to your arch

err you should only do that if you want your system to freak out and die next time you update

don’t do that

or you go to another distro.:p

do as chithead said

(a binary one, not a source one)

ok thanks

ach, what was I thinking?

testusr, sure – 1) prepare all the binary packages you plan on installing, in addition to whatever configuration files you want 2) boot the cd, and 3) install them. Since most of the time will be spent before you boot the cd, the time between booting the cd and finishing your install will be
quite short.

you should(as i learned not so long ago) use package specific use and keywords.:p
otherwise there is much trouble when you do a emerge world….
Nice one!:p

ah sweet! i gave emerge -u world and it’s running again!

what is a good sotf to create dvds from avis, that support custom menus and subtitles?

hi

How do I set my local domain name, and also my name servers?

Renfield, look into /etc and you’ll find

unl0cker, there is dvdauthor, though I’ve never used it.

Draconx, thx Ill try

What? I’m looking in /etc.

“!!! ARCH is not set… Are you missing the ‘/etc/make.profile’ symlink?”

Could you be more specific?

any idea why the tlan driver is not available for amd64? neither i can get this driver on my box, not a friend of mine has it on the gentoo live cd (my friend needs this driver)

when I try to emerge someting
thing*

/etc/conf.d/domainname

The Gentoo networking documentation says to set register your domain name name like so: dns_domain_eth0=”tron”
Should I not do this?

scorch, erm, have you actually set your profile correctly?

Depends how are you setting the box up

I did as the guide said

but try the handbook

ln -snf /usr/portage/profiles/hardened/ /etc/make.profile

this is the domain name that will be used for dns lookups on eth0. if that is what you want, go ahead

see if works for your purposes

unl0cker I did. It does not tell me how to set up /etc/resolv.conf

man resolv.conf

It tells me how to set a static IP, and a gateway.

Are u using dhcp?

I added the values I needed into /etc/resolv.conf, and when I rebooted they were overwritten.
So this leads me to believe that Gentoo has some other configuration file into which I need to put the stuff that will end up in /etc/resolv.conf after a reboot.

because you are using dhcp

yes, they are overwritten by the /etc/init.d/net.eth0 script which reads the /etc/conf.d/net*

and dhcp is populating the resolv file

I am not. I have eth0 set as a static host IP.

not necessarily

my bad then
thats what i have here

Ok, so what do I put into which file to have the correct values inserted into /etc/resolv.conf?

edit /etc/net?

hello again, old friends it feels good to be using Gentoo again

plenty of examples in /etc/conf.d/net.example

I do have a question – I’m booted to the 2006 liveDVD. I’m impatient to begin my install. Should I torrent the 2007 liveDVD instead?

Ok, I think I found it. Thanks.

while booted off the 2006 DVD, download the current stage3 and use that for your install.

thank you nDuff

as long as you’re using a new stage3, it doesn’t really matter what media you’re booted off of.

Renfield, no.. say thanks to chithead … he’s your helper here :P

Ok, thanks chithead.

is there a command to break out of the script completely? For example if an if statement fails how can I just leave the script and not execute anything else in it?

i need a url for my i686 stage3 tarball please

exit

i’ve forgotten so much. sorry

, ok ill try that. thanks

anyone use avrdude and seen an error like this – avrdude: ser_open(): can’t set attributes for device “/dev/ttyS0″: Inappropriate ioctl for device
I think its a kenrnel config for serial or something
but no idea really

unl0cker, avrdude -p atmega169 -c butterfly -P /dev/ttyS0 -U flash:w:/home/bocephus/bf_gcc_20070517b/bf_gcc/default/bf_gcc.hex

thank you, Triffid_Hunter

hello, channel

x86 stage3 is for 386s..

emacs-cvs-23.0.50 emacs-cvs-23.0.0-r7, which one should I choise?

lo, how do i go about detecting eth0
was a net-setup utility on livecd, but now i have no idea

depends on your needs, emacs-cvs-23.0.50 is newer, but emacs-cvs-23.0.0.-r7 could be more stable(could!)

both of them are cvs, why do you say that?

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=8

I still can’t emerge

chithead, yes, i had it set to ‘Code listing 10′ …

I think emacs-23.0.50 is more stable than emacs-23.0.0 ;p

the second line of that listing is something you probably don’t want

crud_linux, USB?

why would you think so the -r7 makes me think it’s more stable(it’s a pached version as it seems), the other one is pure

ah, I think you don’t use emacs

unl0cker, no this is an atmel avr butterfly connected to a serial port I’m trying to program with avrdude

honestly I’ve to admit that I don’t know it(nor how the packages are named, but I’d have assumed, that 23.0.0-r7 is more stable
you got me there, I’m a vim user

haha, not as you thought so, ok, after seeing its ebuild, I know the 23.0.50 is what I want ;p
thank you anyway

hm

but only from checking the ebuild or is there a secret behind the naming of ebuilds?

If I run the expat fix from mzbot, will that require manual intervention later to keep running?

dammit
got a new error
it’s almost 4am too _
http://rafb.net/p/j9uhyi54.html

chithead, doesnt alter the result

checking the ebuild and see the ECVS_SERVER and ECVS_MODULE lines

Since recent updates lshd no longer works… connecting with ssh hangs, putty gives a message “Server refused to allocate pty”, scp and pscp say no such file or directory. Any ideas?

does “ifconfig -a” list your network device?

no

any ideas what’s causing it to say i have an unusable .config in the kernel source directory?

chithead, eth0 does not exist

then your kernel is not configured correctly. you need to enable the driver for your network card

k

crud_linux, try -P/dev/ttyS0

why won’t lshd allocate a pty or send files?

unl0cker, no diff

when I run a verbose pretend ‘emerge world’ i get a bunch of “such and such is blocking such and such” and when I try to unmerge such and such portage complains the package doesn’t exist

illuminum – does a file named expatlib.so.0 ring a bell?

wasn’t it in the topic?

qe2eqe no it does not
what should i do?

Yep. His problem sounded like my problem. That part of the problem about circular packages I resolved by changing my /etc/portage/keywords file… and I removed a line from portages world file. Don’t know how good of an idea that was….

/msg mzbot faq expat
?

to end the speculation here, please pastebin the emerge output

my lshd recently quit accepting connections, it refuses to allocate a pty and won’t send files via scp, how can i fix it?

crud_linux, try the gui

unl0cker, gui? avrdude has a gui?

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=125549&package_id=139089&release_id=291782

“No mixer elems found”. I tryed compiling alsa and the correct driver in-kernel, as kernel modules, and with alsa-driver. I followed the docs of http://www.gentoo.org/doc/fr/alsa-guide.xml, have googled, searched and read gentoo forum’s
related messages, and i can’t find anyway to get a mixer on this card. Everything else seems as expected. Any clue please ?

check portage as well

brb, rebooting

k

how to kill X server?
killall -9 xorg ?

ctrl+alt+backspace

xchat is friggin’ cool with it’s loading of the last logs
anyway, Hello people

heh, I scripted that into mirc many years ago

Triffid_Hunter, cool, a truely great idea
truly

chithead, actually, before i get into that, is there a way to do it with hotplug? except that the package was renamed..?

? you need kernel support for your card. if you build it as a module, udev will load it automatically on boot

Mirrakor, killall -9 X should make it go away, but is not the safest of operations. You should always properly shut down X (killall X would do, or ctrl+alt+backspace if you haven’t disabled that) if you can.

also, stopping the display manager (xdm/gdm/kdm/…) will terminate the X server

if I wanted to see all the latest installs and updates, would this be the /var/log/portage dir?

hey guys
anyone here?

could be

sweet

I might be lying, too

i get an error while emerging eclipse
i bet your ling
here is the thing
Using /opt/sun-jdk-1.6.0.02 for java5home

4GB of RAM?

greetings all

no
on df -h

I’m pretty sure that’s talking about RAM

1 gb of ram

when i mount my cd using mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom it works. but i enabled hal and now when i try to let hal mount it it says unknown fs ‘audo’

somewhere ‘auto’ is misspelled as ‘audo’

audo is misspelled
had to be auto
propably in /etc/fstab
how would i free up ram?

that sounds like something i would do, yet i did not type auto or audo anywhere

how much swap do you have?

exept for reboot to cli?
thinks its 2gb
lemme check
maybe more like 5

nm i did infact do that, i typed it wrong in fstab haa haa i never even would have noticed. ty

np
looks like 1gb of ram and 5 of swap

i have a bit of a problem

should be good enough

and swap is active? check ‘top’ how much swap is free

apparently i don’t have a usable .config in the kernel sources directory
do i have to use something to generate that?

nearly all

./usr/src/linux

make menuconfig will create a .config

are you installing?

cheers chithead :]

or recompiling?

nvidia drivers

ah, fun

*nvidia-drivers
:P

loved doing that too
ati for me

i just did make menuconfig
“no rule to make target
do i have to be in a certain directory?

yes

yeah

silly me ^_^

hey guys… i have a compile error compiling boost, and it doesn’t say much, so if anyone is familiar with it i would be very grateful: http://amarok.pastebin.ca/675386

kojiro! everything seems to have worked

I’m living in a RAMDisk on a box too small for an Ubuntu livecd, but it booted Gentoo’s livecd. Tomorrow a modern box arrives; what packages should I investigate for virtual linux (e.g. a gentoo compilation box)? I need text-only docs I can read
tonight.

woah

good

blue screen heloing me to make this kernel thing

yeah

i don’t have a clue what these options mean…

check the gentoo installer handbook
good stuff in there bout the kenel
any idea?

I can’t remember the name of the program which makes an X server inside of another
like as a window

not really. Maybe check in #gentoo-java?

Xnest

ill try that
thanks

eternaleye, thanks

Xephyr is better than Xnest (compile X with kdrive USE-flag)

Hi guys… i got a problem here.. hope someone helps me out. What happens is that when i run some apps full screen, like Blender or VirtualBox, the Gnome bars wont go away. I would like to know how to make them go to the bottom

anyone please ?

what bars are you talking about?

Wofl, the up and down bar. the all life gnome bars

hmmm, im sure you can put em on autohide, but i use kde so i cant check…
might try the gnome channel

wich is?

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_Complete_%28includes_dmix and after u do everything you may try alsaconf to configure it

##gnome

ops wrong link http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_Complete_%28includes_dmix%29

many thanks Wofl

np

thanks, i have tryed both proposed install procedures, and `cat /proc/asound/cards` returns expected values, but i still can’t get alsamixer to run correctly

I’ve got apache 2.0.58-r2 emeerged but for some reason I still have to contend with mysql which just won’t start.

if you run that scanelf command again does it output any package names?

I 3 Gentoo folks
lol!
kojiro, you reading my post?

note that it worked perfectly with all previous kernels (which i have dumbly deleted) of that install since a half a year

after a recent world update i am having Access Violations during install of gnome-applets and epiphany when emerge tries to unlink /usr/share/xml2po/docbook.pyc.

Scorpaen, read my reply

t35t0r, I was using Kubuntu when I needed help. there is no emerge in kubuntu
bt35t0r, I was using Kubuntu when I needed help. there is no emerge in kubuntu/b
I think you misread my post

you misread my point
is there screen in kubuntu ?

my point being, kubuntu cd is in the garbage now and i’m back to Gentoo
need I say more?

there is apt-get and aptitude

don’t talk about apt in here
lol

it’s not like it doesn’t have package management

I’m not here to trash Kubntu
i’m here to say I love Gentoo

what channel did you go to with 120 some members? #kubuntu ?

ubuntu+1

why didn’t you just go to 3ubuntu

i was using Gutsy

just because you didn’t find the package manager isn’t a reason to trash on a distro ..

I’ve checked it and the ones I had the chance to take off are no longer there.

ahem

raventh1, you miss my point

good, is there anything left?

i left because they didn’t help me

ok, gents, if you wish to continue missing each other’s points please do it in #gentoo-chat

i got help in HERE

So what you have instructed me to do has done it.

sometimes there’s no help in here ..just a better chance of getting it because there are 931 people

ok, so mysql is probably a different prob

sorry about that kojiro

’sok

moral of the story, learn to find shit on your own.

language

#gentoo isn’t that much better

join me in #gentoo-chat

yeah, but when all other searching fails, I can normally find someone in here who can help me, at least eventually. so they do better than I do

I have to say php mysql web hosting was taken out due to trying to include ldap and in the process I hosed my whole system.

err?

hey
I need some info

yeah ouch!!

does your foot taste like metal?

koj and it has taken quitwe a while to restore it ./

if I’ll install pentoo as instructed will the desktop and all the stuff be like it is in livecd version of this linux distro?

um… this isn’t #pentoo
#gentoo and #pentoo aren’t affiliated

well I know…but there really isn’t any good channel for this

mysql has not given in yet to what the cause and fix is mysqld is not being seen on 3306
port

if I wanted to see all the latest installs and updates, would this be the /var/log/portage dir?

ironfoot495 from internal or external?

internal

usually just /var/log/emerge.log
but if you have qlop from portage-utils, or genlop, it’s a bit nicer to read

my error regarding the access violations appears to be due to not running python-updater. i do recall catching this warning fly by during the emerge world,

if I install a genkernel on a hard drive in my system and move the hard drive to another, it should boot, right? because the computer I want to run it on has no boot medium

Daryltoo, just make sure it has all the hardware support needed

ok. can I copy a livecd image host directly over and install grub?
no, thats probably bad too
don’t answer that

lol

omg

what kind of connection to it do you have?
HAMMERTIME

No outdated packages on my system!

only the ones I haven’t taken off yet.

lo
not hammer time just yet :p

who, what?

dang

seriously. thank you so much

no, hammer time is when you really screw up

you too wofl
lol
hehehe

sure
i screwed up HAMMERTIME

emerge -uDNv world results in everything being updated :]
i think that means my system is working ^_^

like when you try to log in and the machine goes “Can’t touch this.”

haha

that’s hammertime. break it down.

someone wanted to know if it was external or internal but here is a copy of my netstat -ap http://rafb.net/p/GXiGFP94.html

john, i would update the toolchain first

wtf is the tool chain?

I have no connection really.. it has an ethernet jack.

oh wait
i remember
something to do with the programs i regularly use

or a usb drive, but the gentoo usb install guide won’t seem to work

john, everythng updated before that will be compiled against the old stuff

emerge -uDNv world is nice, but it doesn’t guarantee everything is working.

right
oh no?

run revdep-rebuild

i’m –sync’ing right now

toolchain is bin-utils, gcc and linux headers +extras (i think)

one sec

don’t sync *after* you emerge -uDNv world, that’s rather pointless

Daryltoo, can it boot of the network?

I think it can, but I have no familiarity with doing that

revdep’ing
does this take a long time?

that might be a good solution though, but its your call

it can, but hopefully not

it’s an epia-5000 or something like that, one of those via eden mini-itx 533mhz suckers

done

or a live-usb stick, i use those

that was quicker than i expected

could propably install from one of them

sorry to disappoint. I’ll try to make it slower for you.

:P

hammertime!

maybe next time ^_^
hahaha

yeah, can ou recommend a good install guide? the gentoo usb boot guide doesn’t work. syslinux says it can’t find the kernel

Woah-w-woah-woah

k, I’m getting the following on my serial – gentoo-desktop dev # stty /dev/ttyS0 produces stty: standard input: Input/output error

hash\(%hash1, %hash2); ?

i use slax on my usb stick

because hash is a command

i assume you can chroot into the drive and install from there

is that slackware?
yeah, should work one would think?

ok, poor example, assuming the hash name is not hash

lemme see

is that supposed to be perl, or what?

nevermind I found it wofl

I have no idea what you’re trying to do.

dood, ww, sorry

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/liveusb.xml
or try this

anyone know which fwcutter is needed for a bcm94311 rev 01?

anyone tell me how to go about debuging a serial port connection?

where is that file which you have to add masked packages found again?

gentoo John package.unmask

I’m having one hell of a problem trying to get my wireless pccard to work :|

is there a program that can detect differences between binary files? does diff do this?

WPC11 v3, I’ve compiled orinoco_cs as a module. when I stick the card in, it will load the driver, the card will show up in iwconfig and ifconfig, but even with specifying every last detail for iwconfig, the card won’t assoiciate with any APs, and iwlist scanning doesn’t work
yes, diff will perform that task

I want to detect any changes that may have been made with a hex editor
I tried to just sdiff the two files, but is there a specific command that I can get from sdiff –help?
I tried man diff, but it doesn’t show any specific switch for comparing binaries

righto
i’m off to bed
psymin!
hey :]

night

night wofl

hammertime

hahah
yeah, that’s more like it =P

same thing

hehe

cya later

later mate!
see yah *

So .. did John get his issue fixed?

Why do I want multiple automake versions? I have so many installed, I don’t know why automake-wrapper is installed

Sakkath, because some build systems demand specific versions of automake.

any way i can determine if i can rid of a few?

psymin, i think more or less, not sure

newer versions aren’t backwards-compatible?

Sakkath, not completely.

Wofl, Thanks, I was hoping there was a happy ending to the day-long saga

I see.

sure, i hope so too, all the time

what is ‘autotools’?

Sakkath, a term often used to refer collectively to autoconf, automake, and libtool.

Tools designed to automatically make development as difficult as possible

maybe i can do like an equery to see if anything depends on the other versions?
well autoconf is part of automake right? i dont knwo what libtool is though

Assuming ebuild dependencies are correct, depclean should remove automake versions that aren’t needed to build any installed package.

thank you, is it safe?

Sakkath, no, autoconf and automake are different programs.

oh i se
+e
and autoconf is a different package too? heh. autoscan is part of ac though
I’ve got a lot to learn
QOTD:
“You’re so dumb you don’t even have wisdom teeth.”
lol

Sakkath, well, autoscan is just a tool for automatically generating (bad) input for autoconf.

and autoheader?
‘Create a template header for configure’

hi, how can I disable one of my network interfaces (eth1) so the system never attempts to start it?

remove it from the default runlevel
when you say ‘never attempts to start it’ do you mean at boot?

it doesn’t appear in rc-update -s

do you use ifplugd?

in my boot log I can see * Device initiated services: net.eth1 udev-postmount

why do you have the NIC if you never want to use it?

I booted off the insallation CD / live cd. When I start a root terminal (or do su), it needs a root password. What is it? I already tried just hitting enter

it’s pre-scrambled
set one

it’s the wireless connection; I used it before but I don’t need/want it now

maybe toor

with passwd?

disable in bios?
yes

I’d rather disable it in linux, if possible

well i would think it would cause for less resources, probably hardly any but whatever
you can remove the actual runscript since it’s just but a symink
symlink

;/

as the normal user, passwd asks for the password.

pearpc broken in portage

or should be, to net.lo

it keeps trying to connect all the time, fails, logs stuff
oh, why didn’t I think of that?

then do it as root?

but I can’t get root access without the password

well it’s a simple solution but i honestly wouldn’t knwo what else would be automatically startin git
then do it via console

unless ctrl+alt+f1 works…

^
the livecd doesn’t come with sudo, does it?

umm….
I forgot to check

Where can I find a guide to set up a network interface in /etc/conf.d/net that need to run an external program (gvpe) to exist?

oh- how do I get back to a gui after ctl + alt + f1

maybe you can make a runscript for gvpe and then edit the /etc/conf.d/net.blah runscript (don’t use a symlink, just cp, i guess) and do depend gvpe, or something, MAYBE that would work?
or need, donno whether to use need or depend. i’m not familliar with gentoo runscript syntax
it’s like ctrl-alt-f7
or f8 maybe
xorg resides on one of the tty’s

ahhh- I never knew why that worked; thanks

:p

and it turns out sudo bash got me a root shell…

well sudo -i would have done fine

have a look at /etc/conf,d/net.example, there’s some pre and post script hooks there

long time no talk
guess you don’t really know me but i’m sure we talked here slightly

I’ll try that

yes, and I should be asleep :-)

then have at it, catch ya later

nah, need to stay awake a bit
no thanks, I still want to sleep :-)

lol

I’m trying to put store my gpg private key on a usb drive. Is the only way to do this to create a symlink to the usb drive?

why symlink?

Doesn’t gnupg look for the key in ~/.gnupg? Can you specify another key on the command line?

ok, where can i find net-setup and lspci in portage?

not sure about net-setup, lspci is in pci-utils

hmm

k bonsaikitten

thanks that worked, much simpler then I thought

emerge and esearch show nothing for pci-utils

sys-apps/pciutils

ah, k

Still alive? :P

Somebody knows that error is this, is happening with some programs –http://rafb.net/p/7agkTK35.html

hello everbody, iirc ccache isn’t used when making a kernel ? is it possible and interresting to set up if you have like 15-20 ‘make clean && make’ to do ?

hellp!!

python-updater might help

what is the command for listing hardware

ok

is there a way to get .aiff support in kaffeine?

will udev load wireless drivers on boot? for some reason, wireless drivers i have installed as modules are loaded even though i don’t have those modules listed in /etc/modules.autoload.d/.

You might be talking about lspci

thats it thnx

i need help installing grub via cmd line from the liveDVD as my install failed

udev now blacklists any modules on /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
You better upload the error, your grub.conf and the output of fdisk -l with some comments

interesting. thing is, i don’t have anything listed in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6.

what i’m looking for is the cmd line for installing grub to hda

so no aiff support

grub-install /dev/hda

i rebooted and i’m back on the liveDVD

grub-install –no-floppy /dev/hda

so udev will load them. unless you use RC_PLUG_SERVICES on /etc/conf.d/rc

Cannot open root device “sdb2″ or unknown-block(0,0)

Or you can use grub directly

i get a few errors when i do that
do i have to chroot first?

and not as modules m

Yes, you need to chroot

And that’ll work for SATA as well?

Yes. Sata requires scsi support in the kernel

in mplayer I cannot click on any buttons _
any ideas why?

gentoo cannot tell if we modprobe a module and the module is already inserted, is it? instead it always tell invalid module format??
