jelly, ssh will probably not cause much overload. the main issue with backups is usually i/o. even a very basic machine will be able to handle ssh/rsync very well. to improve safety ssh is obvisouly the way to go. just make sure the backup server host is
as save as it can be….

apparently something went wrong with the making of the initrd image during the upgrade of the second box. Either that or the initrd got corrupted. Anyhow, it worked.

well, that looks like it worked. Have to re-attach the SATA drive and reboot to make sure. Grab the initrd file ; un-gzip the file ; uncpio the file ; change ONE STINKING LINE in ONE STINKING FILE ; re-cpio the directory ; re-gzip the cpio ; cp the new initrd into /boot. WHEW!
