I am runnning on AMD A64 X2 CPU. Until now I used it as a 32bit CPU, today I connected another hard drive to my PC, downloaded the amd64 stage3 files, extracted them, downloaded portage files (I done it according to the amd64 gentoo handbook) and when I do the chroot command it fails with error
saying that it could not execute binary file - is there something wrong with installing gentoo (64bit) from within running gentoo (32bit)?

i really love gentoo and guess it's the most flexible/usable distro. I'm surely no shell-avoiding-mouse-user but one thing that still annoys me with gentoo is the installation. You have to read the Handbook everytime again since there are so many changes.

you shouldn't have been running X as root in the first place, but Xorg is fine, it has to be configured as root. as for the rest, the settings are propably in hidden directories in root's homedirectory, you can copy stuff from there and chown or you can configure them again

Does the installer for gentoo work these days?

yes, that’s it. it only works on days where the temp is over 90F, there are no clouds in the sky, and the moon is visable.

I have a fileserver on linux, all users share a network drive, but need to be able to delete files ending in .fxp. I don’t want to give them any rights though, is there a way to write a script which can do only this and give them a mechanism from windows to activate this script with a file
name which I can them check is a .fxp to allow deletion?

are you kidding, that’s the only way to run gentoo properly. You can do the gui install if you want to wimp out, but then why not run windows or ubuntu?

been using gentoo for ages, was jsut curious if the installer worked in case i had to do another install.

but the gentoo install is the best out there.

ls -al should show the permissions … fix them!

i tried it once, it wouldnt even start up, hence why i asked if there had been any improvements.

The installer worked for me I guess.
Not the GUI one, but the CLI one.
