trovster do you carry this hubris-dickery over to #php or any of the more serious and involved web development

Cron which is cron-like timed perl execution

Nyture, http://search.cpan.org that’s what you can do with Perl :P ~
Anything from config file handling to Web and GUI robots

and less “ditto” commands eh’? Same effect, different command name.

yea php has a bunch of extra things
all essentially does the same thing
makes it h so lovely to look at code and figure out wtf the author was doing
I like the why php is good
I feel like that

“PHP got rid of the most of the dimwit perl programmers who aren’t capable of doing anything that can’t be done by calling a function with some arguments. “
killed?

ok so just for example. In php a mysql query might look like mysql_query(“SELECT * FROM database WHERE id = ‘0′”); whats it look like in perl?

I had a co worker I was trying to teach what I did in perl

perl is a terrible language

instead they learned php hosting and wrote it over themselves

perl is awesome
just not as awesome as ruby

it’s very difficult not to make a mistake

they started using php

training wheels without the bike?
no actually i think that first one meant that php killed the really stupid programmers

So why ar the majority of websites (maybe 85% ive seen) programmed in PHP?

no

but gave hope to the somewhat non stupid ones
php is easier

first one meant the really stupid programmers all use php

no
the stupider
not the really stupid..

why do 90% of users use windows

Because its installed on every new pc?
I have to pay extra for linux

huh?

Goto the store sometime dude. Not everyone can build their own computer
EVERY computer now n days comes pre-installed with windows. If you want linux you have to pay to buy it (redhat) and pay to have it installed

yea they can, it’s just a few screws

I fried my first attempt

really?

didnt know computers could actually smoke =P
yes really

my friend did that, he didn’t put on a heat sink

damn PC board was mislabeled

I was like you are an idiot
it ran for like 3 minutes, started displaying weird characters and freezing
so he kept rebooting it
thing is, you don’t have to be smart to put together a computer, there are guides on the internet for it

Well situation was, right above the usb port was a connection labeled USB in big bold letters, so I plugged it in there. turned out it was wrong and there was ANOTHER connection across the board which I literally had to stretch the cord to the max to ever reach, and labeled above in tiny TINY letters was, again, USB

same with installing linux, same with learning how to program perl
ohhh
yea you gotta read the schematic

well, the professor had lost them
even he didnt know WTF was wrong

you can’t just read off the board what goes where, the people who make those don’t speak english anyway

he had to go home and reprint them

learn chinese

in a nutshell, a PC board will smoke when you plug a wire thats meant to be a ground into a connection that supplies a positive voltage

I kinda started the opposite way, I took my computer apart and put it back together

I don’t even know how to open my computer

……

you plugged the ground.,.. oh man

it has a gap in the center

yea cool eh’?

it didn’t have any instructions on opening the case

aga, this computer was ANCIENT

and now my DVDRW drive won’t open
ancient computer open easily

Hint; paper clip

i can’t fix it

“why so many sites done in PHP” Because PHP is easier to learn and sums up to tool to put up quick web hacks. PHP programmers are also much cheaper than Perl. I use Perl more on a non-web projects. Besides, how do you know that those websites use PHP? I know f00li5h uses Perl but has .php extensions to confuse lusers.

yeah but i don’t want to keep doing it

I started with disassembling a 286… those things were way more massive than computers today

f00li5h, meow

i have an htm extension on my perl script

I’ve done that, mod_rewrite perl scripts to look like php to appease a client

what about ruby on rails then?

Nyture, all this asking and wondering is pointless. Just try and see. All I can say is that I knew Perl already and decided to give PHP a try. Joined ##php, got “you can’t do that, PHP doesn’t support sub refs”. Met my buddy in there, who pointed out a few other things that Perl can do and PHP can’t. So that’s where my PHP learning ended and I won’t ever learn it.
perlbot, ruby

ruby is a wannabe perl

I kept getting stuck on the tutorial (crashed)

php is easy to learn zoffix, I taught myself php in like 2 days
just look at some scripts, they are all essentially the same thing

pffft, i taught myself perl in half a day
though it is easier to learn

paotzu, Perl was very easy for me to learn (after coding in C and ASM). I use the language for how easy it is to do things, not how easy it is to learn.

php that is

I only know php because people require it more and more
I say I would do this in perl and they ask what is perl
whereas they say we need excellent php skills ten times in the same phone convo
clients seem to think either visual basic or php are solid web programming and perl, ruby, etc are some kind of fringe languages… might as well say I will use lisp

I say “good bye” to those clients.”

Wanna see something?

lisp is nice
