hi guys I was trying to upgrade to the latest stable gnome version 218 and I got the following error during gnome-menus
subElementRect(QStyle:ubElement, const QStyleOption*, const QWidget*) const’:
/usr/bin/sshd (security reasons). but why not use the init.d script?
…/../include/QtCore/../../src/corelib/arch/qatomic_x86_64.h:105: error: inconsistent operand constraints in an `asm’
wha?
kerframil, what IS the init.d script?
/etc/init.d/ssh
shut-, if it were me i would try a different monitor to see if thats the problem, but you said you only have one monitor…
shoo! go to sleep ;
/etc/init.d/sshd that is
thanks fieldy
you’re worse than me.
in a few minutes
ah thanks
any time my homie
lol
“emerge -C apr apr-util subversion && emerge –deep subversion” seems to fix svn
the mac ‘n’ cheese gives me special powers of typo-sensing
I thought it would :p
alas, after I finish it, I will be a mere mortal like the rest of you again
told you apr was a pain.
true
yea i do only have the one
anyone knows what to do about compile bug for qt4 under amd64 w/ gcc 3.4.6?
3.4.6? why so old?
my emerge just crashed with a segfault on updating glibc and now when i run emerge it just prints Segmentation fault and stops.. any suggestions?
might want to ask #gentoo-amd64 too, or search bugs.gentoo.org and forums.gentoo.org
shut-, if you are getting a resolution error, and you have only one monitor how are you typing in irc?
do you have a laptop?
jeeeeeevces
dooooooork
-c
a dork is a whales penis
I just finished emerging GNOME and /etc/init.d/avahi-dnsconfd doesn’t exist
a whale’s penis?
isn’t there an ‘avahi’ USE flag?
yes there is
Hello, I just did a major update that brought in Gnome 2.18 and now gnome doesn’t start correctly
no idea
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dork
how do you start GNOME?
It just comes up and seems to be unable to display any dialogs or anything, I am currently stuck at the blank screen with what is probably an error dialog t
that doesnt display anything
so include avahi in the USE variable… then re-emerge gnome?
run revdep-rebuild -p
I am using xdm to launch gdm and then logging in
GDM still works?
possibly – I don’t remember if it’s enabled by default or not
seems to work fine, though it undid my theme settings, which is easy to fix assuming I can log in and run gdm-setup
emerge –info | grep avahi
so you try to start GNOME with GDM, and what happens?
there is more to subversion than hat the faw says, care to know?
precious little…it goes to a blank screen (default background color) and a big gray box in the top left corner (presumably a dialog box)
what would a standard(desktop user) set of use flags be?
k, disable xdm/gdm, and start GNOME with ‘gnome-session’, look for error messages
there is no border or anything, just a grey box like it wants to draw something there
yes?
oh? can you right-click?
/usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop
emerge -1 apr apr-utils pulls in apr-0.9.2 and 1.2.8, but apr-util only pulls in the latest, 1.2.8, and then subversion cant find /usr/bin/apu-config, and thus not build unless you emerge both apr-util-0
gentoo econobeing profile upgrade
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/new-upgrade-to-gentoo-1.4.xml
apr-util-0* and apr-util-1*
gentoo econobeing gentoo upgrading
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-upgrading.xml
a good idea to decide whether you’re going to use GNOME, KDE, both, or neither
nope, no right clicking
k, start with gnome-session, it should be easier to debug
how do I start a gnome session? should i be doing that as user or root? user just bt bitched that it cant open the display
user is fine, you just use the executable ‘gnome-session’
interesting. I only have 1.2.8. perhaps you have something that relies upon the older (slotted) version.
but you’ll probably want to disable and exit xdm/gdm first
very possibly
qdepends -r apr
I did /etc/init.d/xdm stop
did startx as user, came up gave me 3 xterms, typed gnome-session in one of the xterms
thanks
no no
gnome-session from the console
not startx
oops, -Q not -r
=net-nds/openldap-2* depends on both 0. and 1.
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
with -Q only itself and apache comes up
openldap doesn’t depend on apr in any shape or form.
k that’s a start – look that one up
seems more than gnome was updated
sorry, that was the -r, the -Q gave itself and apache, confirmed by emerge -pet apache
qdepends -vQ apr-1
or -0 even
yes
if depends -vQ apr-0 shows up nothing then you can nuke it.
did a full update and revdeps and so on emerge saysnothing else to update and revdep says everything is kosher
see msg
apr-0 has openldap as a dependancy
basically all the things I see say that it is a symptom of the xserver not running
what happens if you try to restart X
that’s not making any sense. it can’t have it as a direct dependency (indirect, maybe).
that’s the output, pasted in msg
how? I am using xdm to start x and GDM
i can do startx as a user and it brings up a really basic X with 3 xterms
ok, so apache needs the older version.
yeah
did you update your xdm.conf file in /etc/conf.d ?
good thing we have slots.
during an etc-update/dispatch-conf ?
and since apr-0 is on the system, subversion builds against it and then needs apr-util-0
as far as they work, yes
ok, I follow.
if I type startx and get the X server up, and then gnome-session I just get a empty grey box that comes up and no errors in the xterm
grep gdm /etc/xdm.conf
so the basic command to clean this is: emerge portage-utils gentoolkit && emerge -1 $(qlist -qIC e
xpat gettext python XML-Parser dbus) && revdep-rebuild — -X –library libexpat.so.0 && revdep-rebuild -X && emerge -C -q apr apr-util subversion && emerge -1 apr =apr-util-0* =apr-util-1* && emerge subversion
ick, sorry for the line wraps
just checking with revdep now that is doesnt leave anything unlinked
but why doesnt revdep see subversion as having broken linkage when it clearly is broken?
no xdm.conf
if that’s the case then I would definitely file a bug. the subversion ebuild _explicitly_ depends on =dev-libs/apr-util-1.2.8 and should pay no heed to 0.* versions whatsoever.
I was in here earlier asking about –sync’ing other computers on my network from one that was anlready syncd, but I wasn’t able to find out how
/etc/init.d/xdm starts gdm
oops – grep gdm /etc/xdm
blah
I’ll reproduce it on another test box and file in the morning, for now i need to get this show running fixing subversion and go to bed
oops – grep gdm /etc/conf.d/xdm *
lol
/etc/conf.d/xdm says DISPLAYMANAGER=”gdm”
if I install autofs, do I need to use it to mount all the filesystem ? or can I only use it for cdrom and usb ?
gdm comes up fine, its after the login that it goes stupid
what is your session set for ?
dragonbyte_, there should be an error report
where?
I emerged GNOME with this USE=”-qt3 -qt4 -arts -kde X gtk gnome hal avahi” and /etc/init.d/avahi-dnsconfd doesn’t exist
firstly, you might need to clear revdep-rebuild’s cache. secondly, it only picks up on packages which have broken links to ET_DYN ELFs (libraries) – broken as in “I can’t find the file that I’m supposed to be linking to”. that’s not a panacea, alas.
guys, he gets an error from gnome-session – it’s not GDM
you did what? :/
dragonbyte_, if gdm starts, you can try to log in right ?
yes, i log in, gnome “starts” and I get a grey dialog box with no border and nothing on it and it just hangs
The following is my USE variable in make.conf
USE=”-qt3 -qt4 -arts -kde X gtk gnome hal avahi”
After emerging gnome, /etc/init.d/avahi-dnsconfd doesn’t exist
ah okay
dragonbyte_, look @ /var/logs/Xorg.0.log
at the bottom, there should be an error
cache cleaned, and ldconfig clearly shows subversion not finding a file explcitily, so that should pick it up?
the Xserver doesnt hang, I can still move the mouse and such, and there arent any erorrs
I guess so.
gnome just fails to finish starting
dragonbyte_, uf wierd, tried runing revdep-rebuild ?
Does /etc/init.d/avahi-dnsconfd need to exist for gnome to work properly?
yup, nothing
your session is jacked up
Nobody knows anything about ‘/etc/init.d/avahi-dnsconfd’?
oh well, another mystery for another day
yeah
even starting it on an xterm it doesnt give any errors
I hate when things go stupid for no discernable reason…I like error messages and logs telling me what went wrong ; ;
thanks for the help tho
its usually operator errors
yeah…you would think at some point I would learn to quit updating gentoo
or learn how to properly update gentoo ?
how is that?
apparently not how your doing it ?
but thats beside the point ..
Does anyone in here find emerging world as simple on Sabayon as Gentoo?
saying sabayon will get you shot
but its just as easy, but takes longer
ok any ideas on why the session is hanging or how to troubleshoot it?
in gdm, what is your session set for ?
BaseXsession=/etc/X1/gdm/Xsession?
any ideas?
son of a bitch!
well found part of the problem
gj
i went to /root and deleted .g* basically (any gnome/gtk crap) and it logged in fine
so apparently 2.18 is choking on the 2.16 configs somewhere
maybe you never updated conf files when you should have
dispatch-conf/etc-update
did those, dispatch does nothing, etc-update says nothing to do
you did them before or after you deleted a bunch of confs? :p
but neither of those do anything with your . files in your home dir do they?
ah, no
hey channel…i got into a mighty frustrating downward spiral earlier today (started with trying to install gnash) and now my dbus, hal, local and local won’t work for booting up, and trying to fix that problem, i ran out of disk space! lol…and i thought i was being generous with 10G on a distro i wanted to try and keep relatively lean
gettinthere, if you run out of disk, first thing to do is rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/* – that’ll clean up any leftover emerge junk
then clean distfiles, i think ‘gentoolkit’ includes eclean
k, i will clean it out…although i was thinking of using gparted from my other working distro to make the root partition larger…i haven’t even installed apache, mysql, php and mythtv yet
WTF?!
i’ve already got /home on another partition, and would put all my mythtv recordings/videos, etc on a huge xfs partition that i already use for kubuntu here
seriously this is going to drive me insane
gettinthere, i don’t see how you’d fill up 10gb that fast if you just have gnome or stuff, unless you have a failed openoffice build left in /var/tmp/portage
I removed all of those files as a user and it still wont freaking start
When I boot up gnome, it complains about using dbus-launch. Any ideas?
so how big should my root partition for gentoo be?
gettinthere, my mythtv box has 10, it works fine
it is because of gentoo using /usr really
i have some failed builds there…eg. boost, kdelibs…
has 2 gb free, now that i cleaned up the 2gb of just this morning
How can I tell ut2003 what ky cdkey is?
gettinthere, do an rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/* – see how much space you get back. that won’t break anything – i promise
n3kl, there’s instructions printed when you emerge it, or read the ebuild file.
remember, i was trying to install gnash, it requires boost, and that got me into a whole pile of crap…yes, i did a partition analysis and it is /usr/ that’s using up most of the space
gettinthere, if /usr has most of the space, it’s probably distfiles
check how big your /usr/portage/distfiles is
well, usr/ is 59.2% of the 10G
how do i fix a genkernel error?
it uses about 8Gig if var and tmp and on different paritions
cool, thanks
s/and/are/
ok, moving on to the other major issue…d-bus error at boottime: console says it can’t find libexpat.so.0, that there’s no such file,
but i did a locate immediately, and that file does exist!
updatedb not locate
what is the problem?
i always do an updatedb b4 a locate
i know how fast the db gets outdated
hello
hi
This old laptop has surely seen better days. I can’t get X to start reliably with acceleration.
how do i tell D-BUS where the file it’s looking for is? it’s simply incorrect when it says the file doesn’t exist
does the file exist?
yes
/msg mzbot faq expat
check the symlink
d-bus just can’t find it
kill me … i cannot get these freaking expat errors resolved …. someone seriously fu**** up with that one.
What’s the problem?
/topic
libexpat is the package by the way
teach gettinthere expat
dev-libs/expat-2.0.1 has recently been marked as stable (this is necessary for upcoming versions of other packages in portage). Unfortunately, it is not ABI compatible with earlier versions so some breakage is to be expected and the upgrade path can be tricky! We recommend to run: emerge portage-utils gentoolkit && emerge -1 $(qlist -qIC expat gettext python XML-Parser dbus) && revdep-rebuild -X –library libexpat.so.0 –
sorry expat
CareBear\: i run the command as recommended by mzbot, but when it gets to mod_python, it can’t find libexpat
Pastebin the build log?
lol…now i’ve got some hand-writing to do
thx…this should get me started anyway
CareBear\: 1 sec
you probably need to rebuild apr/apr-util separately first. it’s a pain in the backside (I had a long discussion about it with another user earlier).
How do I fix the dbus-launch error when launching gnome?
im havin a error on the gen kernal all
genkernal all
for example: emerge -C apr-util apr && emerge -1 apr mod_python
orlly, Genkernel bug http://xrl.us/3fzp
https://bugs.gentoo.org/3 nor, P2, x86, tneidt@fidnet.com-danarmak@gentoo.org, RESOLVED, FIXED, poedit-1.1.5.ebuild
I’d be curious to know if that helps.
If it’s “Command not found” it’s because it’s ‘genkernel’
jeeves, tab completion got you
What’s bug 1?
i’ll try
Bug #1 does not exist.
anybody have an idea what the point is of man pages being in the wiki ?
compiling sdl-image gives me headache this time… I’m having weird serie of mysteric compile errors today. http://rafb.net/p/PvVLs495.html for error log. and http://rafb.net/p/57mYpt27.html for the /var’s log file
Ubuntu bug #1 is good.
Jell-O-Fishi : Hmm – how do you mean?
Jell-O-Fishi: none whatsoever, as far as I can discern.
Jell-O-Fishi: ups the wiki in google but yes it is anonying
CareBear\: gentoo-wiki has copies of some man pages
Well it’s handy to have them on the web I guess.
hmm I think emerge libsdl should fix that error
emerge apache
they are on the web. i can maybe understand gentoo specific tools man pages, but the generic man pages are all over the web.
Maybe even do revdep-rebuild -X
Jell-O-Fishi: it is actually a series as well
i can see that.
CareBear\: nope, already tried that … i’m rebuilding apr now
and other than making the index list a nice 2 column 4 each, i don’t see the point
Are you serious? Did revdep-rebuild not want to rebuild apache? That would be a bug.
ok, all u guys who sent me the expat info…i take it it’s all supposed to be on one long continuous line?
emerge -1 $(qlist -qIC expat gettext
dev-lang/python XML-Parser dbus) && revdep-rebuild -X –library libexpat.so.0 –
21. checking your blood pressure… a bit high, but we can proceed
Jell-O-Fishi: it does look like you will have a fight on your hands someone has made some effort there albeit slightly misguided
Hi! Somebody knows why the package kde-base/ksig is blocking my update in merge? See the error: http://paste.milk-it.net/546
yes.
milk-it you’ve emerged ksig earlier?
try unmerging and then try it again
portage man should be there
marking 3.5.7 for kde-packages is really causing headache for lots of users
broken libraries, broken links
hm.. please file bugs if you run into them (search first — http://bugs.gentoo.org )
Fieldy most of them have been stuff that you can fix by emerge -C package1 package2 ; emerge package1 package2
:/
pretty annoying if that’s “stable”
yeah
Milo-, no
milk-it no as you havent emerged it earlier?
does anyone know how quantum computing works programmatically ?
so it doesn’t exist yet?
—! /var/lib/texmf/web2c/pdfjadetex.fmt doesn’t match pdfetex.pool
(Fatal format file error; I’m stymied)
genkernel is still not working
goddamnit you guys suck at packaging
tried ln -s the heads still not fix
Milo-, I not emerged it earlier
k
language
Please help out.
Phantom-X: might want to try #hardware, we try to stick to gentoo subjects here
ok, I’m try unmerging and try merge it
sorry
Jell-O-Fishi: what about it
no gentoo in quantumcomputers ?
if you’ve run into a bug, the best thing you can do is search for a bug already filed about it, or filea new one, http://bugs.gentoo.org
milk-it I had to do “emerge -C kdelibs package2 ; emerge kdelibs package2″ for one blocked package :/
mind it
Jell-O-Fishi: I sure do
Milo-, Are you knows if exist any program that show my log de merge?
sorry, my english is poor
well its half back
hmm I couldn’t understand :/
which is the prefered 3d desktop in gentoo compiz or beryl?
i’m having a compile error on prepare statement of genkernel
worst case, if i can’t fix this libexpat crap, will emerge -e world fix it?
if the program exists when you try emerge -C program
it will say so
teach sleek about expat
dev-libs/expat-2.0.1 has recently been marked stable (this is necessary for upcoming versions of other packages in portage). Unfortunately, it is not ABI compatible with earlier versions so some breakage is to be expected. We recommend to run: emerge portage-utils gentoolkit && emerge -1 $(qlist -qICe expat gettext python XML-Parser dbus apr apr-util) && revdep-rebuild -X –library libexpat.so.0 –
Note that the command has been revised to tell emerge to be a bit more specific
Not neccessarily. revdep-rebuild really should be your friend here.
Errr, hold that thought.
cruxeternus i believe I can do revdep-rebuild -X –library libgii.so.0 libexpat.so.0
to fix both of my library problems at the same time?
Milo- : For multiple libs I think you have to provide multiple –library
–lib a.so –lib b.so
k
Ok, unhold the thought. faq looks correct
Milo-, allright, but now a new package is broken…
milk-it 8C
kde-base/kpf
ok…this expat file/library seems to be gviing a lot of pps probs
revdep-rebuild
milk-it you probably want to run what mzbot said
not if they read elog stuff
emerge portage-utils gentoolkit && emerge -1 $(qlist -qICe expat gettext python XML-Parser dbus apr apr-util) && revdep-rebuild -X –library libexpat.so.0 –
mzbot suggested one long line of code, right?
yes
that one
cla, i’m too new to gentoo to be reading elog stuff…give me a week or so, k?
if you’re upgrading your system right now it’s more than possible that you’ll run into those problems somewhere along the way
you got it
Hi. I have 535 instaled package… made emerge –depclean and it removed only 11 packages… Anybody know how if may i do some other thing to remove programs that any program din’t uses?
You’ll get there faster if you read all you can.
ok…madame butterfly is finished doing her schtick…time to log off and get back to my gentoo- fixing
how do you see how many installed packages you have?
CareBear\ blaah, had to do revdep-rebuild -X –lib blaah –lib blaahagain
trim your world file of things that you don’t really want. then run –depclean again. also, tone down your USE flags (or consider setting flags on a per-package basis rather than globally) … rinse and repeat.
CareBear\: i *love* reading lol
bye for now
heh he reminds me of my self when I started moving to linux
when doing large emerges, it’s hard not to notice how much time is spent in autotools… Is there anything to speed all these duplicated autoconf runs up?
Milo-, I unmerged the package kde-base/ksig, but new I don’t merge it
I’m running the revdep-rebuild
there were efforts to do just that, but they never worked correctly
milk-it do the big line which the mzbot suggested
oh, if you do change USE flag policy then *never* run –depclean again until you’ve done a emerge -auDN world to bring packages into line.
you’ll run into the problem sooner or later ayways
anyways
man xfce4 rocks
loops, it’s impossible to properly do, simply because each configure script is too different, and deps are changing constantly.
specially because it doesn’t exist
Fieldy, okay fair enough.. just a bit frustrating to sit through the same autoconf questions over n over… will just have to learn to look the other way.
what’s the channel for gentoo’s kernel related support?
kerframil, “change USE flag policy” is the change that I do on /etc/make.conf setting $USE?
revdep-rebuild is not silver bullet. users have been reporting issues for hours now that could not have been solved just by running revdep-rebuild alone.
Many argue that autotools is horribly horribly broken.
It certainly is not particularly efficient.
yes.
CareBear\, they may be onto something
alvin_lee, that is one way or you can place certain USE flags for certain packages in /etc/portage/package.use
