I dont understand something about how gentoo uses vhosts I install cacti now I edit the configphp and change

n0vus, mkdir /storage first

well then it didn’t work, at all
^

and is it fine to run memtest on more than one dimm at a time?

HURRAH!!

nmafe is not in the portage or ?

yeah all of it.. (has millions of burns from stars..
)

xored`off, is part of nmap

/dev/null

hey guys

Hi g33k_

i need tcl for my eggdrop
whats the file name lol

isn’t is a USE flag?

/usr/portage/profiles/updates/3Q-2007. please, what kind of update is that? I did emerge –sync and got this notice. I use the 2007.0 desktop profile

oh, great, thanks

Anyone remember the format of deb repos so I could generate a direct wget line for the file and perhaps make a simple howto for installing Ubuntu’s deb of Google Desktop in Gentoo?

idk lethalrocks

_thiago_, it’s normal

alright, now how do I set the drive to mount on bootup?

n0vus, man fstab

:P , alright

or just copy and paste the /root line from fstab

structural changes to the tree. read the actual file and all will be revealed.

n0vus, read the holly hanbook is written there how to setup disks

is it possible to hand edit themes?

so wahts the file i need?

if i use the default values, it says, the ip is down..it only works with P0..what does P0 mean?

save

it modifies names/paths in /var/db/pkg and also within tarballed packages in PKGDIR if needs be to stay abreast of any name changes.

does anyone know how to edit themes
hand edit themes, heights, etc

i need tcl for my eggdrop

got it

emerge tcl?

OMG
i r noob
lol

how do I add volume cantroll to my panel in KDE?

ty Fieldy

emerge kmix

I did

cesco, kmix and add applet with right click

so run kmix now

hi im trying to make sound work for not only root, but for all users on my box, i
changed my user into the sound group. but still sound is not working

can i assign 2 static ip hosting addresses (both on different subnets) to the eth0 device?

sorry for flood

jon___, have you relogin?

what does this mean
guile must be built with “deprecated regex” use flags
are those 2 words actual USE flags?

yes

ok
otherwise lilypond doesn’t build ;/

jon___, add the user to the audio group might help too

quit

If I use the Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers in the kernel, should I disable ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support?
My two hard drives are SATA drives, but my two DVD drives are on IDE.
I’m having problems getting hal to recognize when I insert discs.

HotBBQ, are you member of the cdrom group?

yes. you shouldn’t have multiple drivers/subsystems duking it out for the same hardware. if you’re satisfed with the support provided by sata/pata then all else can be removed.

HotBBQ, I had problems as well and I had to add myself also to the video group

I am in the video group, plugdev, audio

HotBBQ, cdrom cdrw?

should I then enable the PATA drivers for nVidia (my mother board)?
yeah those too

what’s the error msg?

only if they’re said to be stable or prove to be adequate for your needs. Alan Cox issued a post on the state of pata not so long ago – you can probably find it on kerneltrap.org.

hiya

Hi TuxProbe

any way to tell ebuild to produce a static library besides the .so files for each lib?

any ideas on what would be causing my system to login(pam_unix)[pid] blah blah blah every time I login/out?

thanks i’m reading over it now.

how are ya lethalrocks?

I suppose if I don’t like it, I can use the deprecated SATA drivers and all should go back to normal.

TuxProbe, Good, yourself?

lethalrocks im good as well, tired – is all

how do i start proftpd on gentoo?

is anyone here familiar with tv cards?

cryptix, just ask, someone will know

alright, another noob question
how do i tell if gentoo has OSS installed and enabled?

dmesg screams ‘tuner 0-0061: tuner type not set’ but i dont where to specify the type of my tuner… modinfo list nothing intereseting

i know i compiled the support into the kernel but how do i know if its actually enabled?

firedemonsic try dmesg | grep oss -i

hopefully you enabled kernel /proc/config.gz support, if you did you can just read/grep that

I’m having troubles installing nvidia-legacy-drivers. The package compiles fine, but when it goes to install, it errors out saying “sys-libs/glibc-2.6 does not actually suppor tthe nptl USE flag!”. Am I missing something, or is this bug report material? (~x86)

rebuild glibc with nptl

TuxProbe
tried that

glibc doesn’t have an nptl flag anymore

gave some message on how CPU FSB changing is unstable and something about the swap file

that is a know problem. glibc-2.6 dropped linuxthreads so the ebuild dropped the nptl use flag. Some packages look for it.

oh

LOL

screw nvidia

:O

glad i have a radeon now

….

I masked glib-2.6 for the time being.

Is it dependent on linuxthreads, or is this just a “remove the check for nptl”?

the n00b fairy shall get you in your sleep tonight tuxick
:P

the nv driver works without all the hassle
just no gl

the nvidia-drivers ebuild look to see if glibc was built with the nptl use flag.
the ebuild doesn’t find it and errors out.

Yeah, I see those lines, I’m going to see what happens if I comment those out and force the ebuild to install

mzbot, wiki Artimus updated ebuild

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Create_an_Updated_Ebuild

Yes, because I want to use a $100 graphics card as a glorified Cirrus Logic card

Thanks again. I’m going to reboot with the new kernel and see how it goes.

well i got fed up with that nvidia nonsense and i did just that
just a GF2 though

FireDemonSiC, you really should want alsa with oss emulation as oss itself really is outdated.. /dev/dsp should exist if oss support is on

yes grknight im aware
however OSS is the only system that supports my audio chipset

hmm, I wonder if he remembered that using pata will entail updating fstab

unfortunately =/
CMI8788

I removed apr-util and apr as instructed by mzbot, then tried to install libtool and apr-util, but this didn’t fix the problem. Instead apache is now broken because I have no apr-util!

i can always switch the ALSA if they ever release a driver for it, but currently there is no support for that chip in ALSA
ui can always switch the ALSA if they ever release a driver for it, but currently there is no support for that chip in ALSA/u

anyone have a problem running mingw stuff in wine?

FireDemonSiC, really? it should be listed somewhere

/dev/dsp

cant find it anywhere

firedemonsic but i agree with grknight

ALSA supports the two previous Cmedia chips, but not the 8788
well
so do i
but id rather disagree and have sound
let me triple check
but i doubt it =/

FireDemonSiC, it appears it’s in devel though.. so hold out a bit longer

why is linux-identd masked ?

what’s your arch?

64bit

that’s why :p
less popular arch, less speedy marking of stable

okay so i have to compile it as 32bit

~testing is almost always quite stable, however
no no :p
just unmask it

okidoki

How do I install a masked package? I want to install libtorrent-0.11.4

since the standard advice on fixing the apr-util problem only succeeded in getting rid of any form apr-util, can anyone tell me how I can now get it to build again?

im pretty amazed about my new athlon64×2 3800+
and an stage one did the job

echo d

“CMI8788 driver: I’m cleaning up C-Media’s incomplete driver; still horrible bugs. 35% complete”

firedemonsic http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=ALOGGER1184324479.48%40alsa-project.org&forum_name=alsa-cvslog
WiP – work in progress hehe

hooray, got gentoo working on my MacBook.. now to iron out all the crazy configs..

/etc/portage/package.keywords

High-end Xeon… High-end Core2… what’s the difference?

I’ve got the 2.6.21-gentoo-r4 kernel installed and as I tried to emerge x11-drm, I got this in the build.log: http://phpfi.com/251768 and here’s the emerge –info output: http://phpfi.com/251769

jchillerup you have two options, set your global portage keywords or find the library in /usr/portage/category/mypkg
ebuild libtorrent-0.11.4.ebuild merge

For me, 2.6.21-gentoo-* kernels don’t work with x11-drm. Any ideas?

errr
TuxProbe
im in irssi via command line is there an easy way to copy that?

sudo /etc/init.d/gpm start

are there any cli based IM clients, like via ncurses?

Thanks tmr and tuxprobe

Then copy with the mouse (if available)

grknight
where did you read that?
uhhh
im in full blown command line

FireDemonSiC, https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/wiki/wikka.php?wakka=ClemensLadisch

not GUI command line

I dug deep in my memory and remembered that you can as well set the environment variable ACCEPT_KEYWORDS on runtime

Yes, /etc/init.d/gpm start then copy with your mouse…

firedemonicsic it was just a cvs-log with 2 or three patches for your cards

Then right click or shift+insert.

You should not do that.. Use package.keywords.

ok

/etc/init.d/gpm start
lol

systm, pidgin has an ncurses mode (called `finch` to start it)

wtf
wrong F button
h/o

Anyone have an idea as to why emerge x11-drm with 2.6.21-gentoo-r4 refuses to compile? build.log: http://phpfi.com/251768 and emerge –info: http://phpfi.com/251769

got it
thank you

wordeah ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=”x86″ .. you’re prolly emerging an unstable version

No, 2.6.21-gentoo-r4 is a stable version. x11-drm is also stable: 20060608

wordeah, found this bug report http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=184996

thanks..

~,~

Reading.

systm, it is an optional use flag though.. make sure that ncurses is on

grkknight, how long can we estimate until that driver is released
i really need it i have NO sound

got it on

The guy was running an unstable version of x11-drm in that bug report though.

Hmm, ok

What video cards do you all have? Am I wrong in believing that Intel is the most prevalent brand?

I have 945G (macboo) and a nVidia 7600Gt on Desktop

wordeah, for onboard yes. i haven’t seen a card based Intel GPU in a long time

If stable stuff is broken, is that considered elevated priority then?
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=184996 is set at normal and the original bug reporter was using an as of yet unstable version of x11-drm.

x11-drm works for me even against an ATI card, via Intel AGP

intel isn’t really a brand, it’s an affliction :p

lol

What’s the output of uname -r

a disease of the poor, if you will :p

been there they said to ask in my os channel

yeah I doubt that was on purpose, actually :p
why would someone spam _that_ link :p

audacious wont load mp3’s ive tride to install all the plugins but no

oh i don’t use odd numbered kernels — bad idea i’m .20

macmania lame?

let me known in #gentoo-ops when we no longer need to scramble for higher ground, thanks.

mad USE flag

Ah. Then why does it get labelled as “stable”?

well, I’m installing again, I hope it works this time

oh was it so easy…

yeah, oddly-named USE flag, that

by whom? gentoo? lol. kernel.org babie

oh is it ‘mp3′ now? hrmm
gj devs

You use vanilla kernels?

ive added mp3 i tought it was enought

i thought the odd # = unstable was for minor version #’s?

I keep forgetting to to add x.509 in the use flags :-(

eew goto…

in which package can I find the cu (callup) command?

no no, what i meant is AFAK the kernel developers have never considered odd minor numbers “stable”
wordyeah ^^

aww poor thing, failed to do a system scan because my windows registry was full of errors (wait a second, WHAT WINDOWS REGISTER?)

taylor-uucp

the .20 in 2.6.20 isnt a minor

these website scam scans are funny

:p

vap0rtranz, I think they’re going away from that now

its the release number, and odd and even means nothing

iamben, the 6 in 2.6 is

taylor-uucp has a terrible description :p

2.5 was an unstable release

right, and like you said they are moving away from that now

is anyone using the 2.6.20r8 kernel?

yeah
what was all that about?

my bad [major].[minor].[release]

RJ_Mouse, me

did you emerge it or install it from the install

I’m running a stable gentoo-sources and when I compile a stable x11-drm, it fails. self.faith_in_stable–

installing libmad

does any one know much about autofs? does any one know how to config the system to say what time to umount an unused mountpoint time?

this is g33k.unknow_domain i cant find the unknow domain

/etc/issue

/etc/hosts and /etc/conf.d/net

RJ_Mouse, from the install? as all the other kernel I have both a genkernel and a normal setup

im running from command line and trying to figure out how to copy and paste with gpm. i had the page scrolled to the loink i was trying to copy and ditn realize it was pasting it to the room every time i rightclicked
sorry again

tut tut

?

never mind, I’m just teasing you.

RJ_Mouse, follow the kernel upgrade guide

hi, how can i get rsync to just quickly create just the directory structure of a rsync repo?

127.0.0.1 g33k.b0x.net
is that right?
since its local

hmm, i’m installing now, as we speak, and to save download time, i’m using the cd kernel

thx kerframil. I’ll give it a try. How do you know that? I mean, is there a database to search on?

compiling problems are another issue. try them without any optimizations, CFLAGS=”-march=i686 -O” and or less

hmm, i’m installing now, as we speak, and to save download time, i’m using the cd kernel

group, what else

exit

hi im back, when i try to use sound from a regular user it does not

work, i get permissions errors, but i have put my user in the audio

group, what else?
sorry for flood

/etc/conf.d/net should have a dns_domain(_device_name)=”b0x.net”

TuxProbe, is this driver you linked available for download?
O.O

whats the device name?
lo?

that’s ok but you should als make sure that localhost is defined too. also, you should probably set dns_domain_lo=”b0x.net” in conf.d/net
ah, beaten to it

It’s optional, you don’t need it.

RJ_Mouse, my advice still holds valid. I advice you to emerge gentoo-sources then follow the instruction for a genkernel and you done

firedemonsic you could try fetch the newest alsa checkout

so in the hosts
i should add localhost then the ip?

dns_domain is needed, but dns_domain_eth0 for example is not needed.
127.0.0.1 localhost

so i add dns_domain_lo=”b0x.net” in the net then?

firedemonsic http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=27464

let me go check

i think i may have missed the instructions for the “genkernel”

im forever in your debt if this works

No, dns_domain=”b0x.net”

RJ_Mouse, are you following the handbook?

Forget I even said anything about dns_domain with a device. Just use dns_domain=”b0x.net”

dns_domain=”b0x.net”

By the way, this is all explained in /etc/conf.d/net.example

right
that confused me lol
i looked first there :P

If I remember right, there’s also a Gentoo handbook entry on this.

ya lol

for the most part yes, i tried it the first time and came up with a “USE” error, the 2nd time GRUB errored out during the HDD search phase

couldnt understand it too well lol

That’s what the rest of us used…

I just knew.

i used it to install lol

RJ_Mouse, then you gotta fix the grub.conf

since then i’ve been trying different way

i used it to install lol?
okay so what else do i need to do to remove the unknow_domain thing?
stupid keybaord

hm kerframil. A binary search engine would be nice, wouldn’t it?

I think a dev set up some kind of web hosting with database services in his webspace to solve help to alleviate the in-which-package-do-i-find-foo issue but I can’t remember which one.

helps to stop people asking dumb questions on IRC ;-)

during the live cd install (amd64) grub is the only loader, there are no options

RJ_Mouse, btw first do a genkernel and follow the genkernel guide. it will lay down a grub conf probably ready to go

there’s nothing dumb about it

hello… is there any ‘extra’ step that needs to be taken when setting up ssh keys for passwordless login when setting it up to a normal user account? I scp my ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub to root@remoteHost:.ssh/authorized_keys and login with root – all fine. If I do exactly the same with a non-root user, it fails and falls back to password auth. Just can’t work it out…

http://dev.gentooexperimental.org/~mvg/f2edb/

i’ll go back and check the docs again, thank you for the heads up!

Hmm, so apparently battousai is the person I need to consult with. This x11-drm issue is really annoying. Do Gentoo developers usually allow mortals like myself to talk to them directly on IRC?

i’ll go back and check the docs again, thank you for the heads up!

yngwin++

bookmarked

wordeah, nah, whats wrong?

no problem wait a second I will bring you the right doc

see above ^

i’ve got a FreeBSD partition on /dev/hdd3 but cannot boot it. grub says (hd3,2,a) doesn’t exist. but this configuration worked before, when I used BSD more frequently. how can I solve the problem and boot it again?

Well, there’s a patch on bugs.gentoo.org that could fix the x11-drm myself and others are facing. I’m running a stable gentoo-sources and a stable x11-drm won’t compile.

genkernel –menuconfig –bootloader=grub –install –save-config all

wordeah, but its in the bugtracker?

It used to compile with the 2.6.20 series, but doesn’t now.

lol, the system automatically emerged kernel 2.6.20.

The patch itself is. I’ll post the link here in a second: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=184996#c3

RJ_Mouse, http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/genkernel.xml

wordeah, your DD?

Could anyone point out a guide to install Knoppix from the live dvd to an external 80gb usb hard drive? (are the guides to install onto 1gb+ thumb drives the same?)

i’m still doing the initial install, i have not had a successful initial install yet.

Sorry, DD?

sorry to come here for that question but the knoppix chat seems inactive

guys the bloody unknown_domain is still there

RJ_Mouse, what you mean? you are in the kernel step of the installation then do it!

wordeah, looks like some one from x11-drivers just needs to get to it

did you check that wiki hosting guide on properly setting fqdn?

stupid gnome-terminal has so many deps

~TuxProbe, im logged into CVS through command line. what module am i looking for to com-pletely upgrade my ALSA?

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml maybe?

wordeah, what kernel version are you on?

the live cd did not give me any options, it’s doing it all by itself

t35t0r, yeah I much love multi-gnome-terminal hover it went away from the tree because of gnome-1 :/

hllo

why is unknown_domain still there

i’m going back over the install handbook. give me 15 min or so and i’ll be back

RJ_Mouse, are you making a manual or a wizard setup? I don’t know about the installer

http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Setup_Your_FQDN

RJ_Mouse, do a genkernel install that’s my advice follow the guide… good luck

firedemonsic alsa-driver i would assume.. but bear in mind, its a bit of work to compile your own driver
yet alone setting gentoo up to use it, i cannot help you any further than this

i bet
lol

if my /var is corrupt and i have to rebuild the reiserfs tree, what files should I backup before running the operation?

everything

;_;

that’s not possible jacekowski, because trying that freezes the kernel, or crashes it.

emerge x11-drm with 2.6.21-gentoo-r4 refuses to compile. build.log: http://phpfi.com/251768 and emerge –info: http://phpfi.com/251769

there are some files that are corrupt. i’m not sure which ones, but I believe when ls, or cp, etc, comes in contact with them, it hangs it up

i’m trying to build my own ebuild with a package, but the package doesn’t pull in install-sh when autogen is run, can someone point me in the right direction as to how to get it?

hesperaux, www and svn ?

google hasn’t been very helpful
TIA

wordeah, is 2.6.21 stable?

sorry, what about them?

alright

Yes.

you don’t really need /var/log, but definitely /var/db if you can.

did that TuxProbe, and it listed a bunch of different commands and directories with the prefix ‘U alsa-driver_’

hi

whats localdomain?

As is the version of x11-drm I’m trying to compile: 20060608

wordeah, its masked here but x86 keyword?

are they already downloaded/updated?

i think /var/db is what is corrupt =/

wordeah, its masked here by x86 keyword?

sry new to all this

ls alsa-driver?

hesperaux, yeah db also if you can

I cannot boot to Gentoo because grub is still giving me problems. I have read the doumentation on the Gentoo site but no luck. Can anyone help me?

what are www and svn for?

I’ll think about it

whats localhost.localdomain?

it is usually the one that get you. If you lose a lot of /var/db, you might as well re-install.

hesperaux, nothing if you don’t know

what are some symptoms?

^_^

a commonly used fully-qualified hostname to refer to the loopback interface available in all TCP/IP implementations (whose address is always 127.0.0.1)

hesperaux, www is for apache default root and /var/svn is the svn default root

so leave it alone?

are you talking about /etc/hosts?

i do use both…i’m just dumb. =/

im lost =/

ya
is this right?

grep -v ‘^#’ /etc/portage/package.keywords /etc/portage/package.unmask | grep -i ‘gentoo-sources’ turns up nothing

127.0.0.1 g33k.b0x.net g33k localhost.localdomain localhost

It’s not unmasked as far as I can tell.

yes, that’s fine. (localhost.localdomain is of questionable value but does no harm; what is important is that localhost resolves).

wordeah, one sec, i might be outasync

you’ve covered all your bases there.

so if i reboot my box the UNKNOWN_DOMAIN WILL BE GONE? lol

assuming that conf.d/net was also modified to set the domain name, yes.

can anyone tell my why I am getting Error 21 when grub tries to load linux. I have read over the docs many times

YES ITS FICED!
FIXED

firedemonsic did you fetch the source?

how can I properly install apr-utils? I followed the mzbot instructions, but I still get the ‘unable to find db version’ error.

albeit, not your caps lock key

g33k_, CaPs plz

if alsa-driver library contains README etc, go explore the GNU build environment

im just happy its finally fixed

probably wrong configured grub.conf

Please let me know when your emerge –sync is done.

That would make sense but according to the docs it is right

wordeah, aah, ok your right, maybee mention it in the bug that bug is talking about 2.6.22 and mention that now the stable system is effected

i believe i did

&& make

please pastebin your grub.conf with /etc/fstab

wordeah, change the severity up higher, now the stable system is affected

in the CVS directory correct?
kind of like executing a shell script for a tar archive?

sorry not sure what you mean my pastebin

firedemonsic ./configure –help | grep -A25 “with-cards” should supply card list

ok ho
i had to use emerge -avDN world
i had alsa disabled in my make.conf because i thought the only way to get sound wopuld be OSS

mzbot pastebin

=/

paste it to rafb.net

grrr

To what — ‘major’?

help with proftpd? http://rafb.net/p/r9wpnU38.html

Create hacked autoconf.h from the kernel build tree i like comments like that hehe

wordeah, yeah, its not critical
wordeah, you can ping that mailing list as well and ask some to have a look?

as plain text?

Thank you very much.

yes

Oh, well, I just noticed. The request failed
” You tried to change the Severity field from normal to major , but only the assignee or reporter of the bug, or a sufficiently empowered user may change that field.”

wordeah, aah just comment it at the bottom then, people read those bugrepots 24/7

when am i ever gonna get a job ~,~

Done. Thanks again. The mailing list should have gotten that now. And I’ve just come down with the most horrendous headache.
Goodbye.

../configure –help | grep -A25 “with-cards”
returtned ‘no such file or directory’
i was cd’d into the alsa-driver folder btw

what does that do?

you let me see your configs to verify if it’s ok

ok, it will be a minute. I have to reboot and remount the drives from the install cd

has anyone successfully installed avg? I looked at the How to AVG on the Gentoo Wiki site and for some reason I am missing something because it does not work i get “no such file or directory” when running avgscan

firedemonsic you forgot to run autoconf?

antivirus?

….
rofl

yes i want to instal avg to scan for virus’s that I may have picked up before I send files to win boxes

can’t you just use clamav? :p

firedemonsic if configure then ‘pops up’ run ./configure –help |grep cmi and if cmi8788 shows, you’re in the clear

i have read in several forums that avg is faster, more accurate and just all around better

hellhound_, f-prot and bitdiffender are my advices
hellhound_, are free for personal use
hellhound_, (for a mail server environment of course)

what about for just home use? no server

hellhound_, avg is solid, but protection should realy be placed where protection is needed (windoze)

Why not clam since it’s in portage?

Why don’t you include Iceweasel in Gentoo?

that sounds like bunk :p I’ve read in several places that clamav is unbeatable :p
and oh yeah, open source

corrideat, theres firefox already

(practically the definition of unbeatable)

is there a command i can use to look @ the various activity on my network, like what ip’s are on my subnet and all that?

i completely agree… but i do not want to distribute something that has a virus even if it does not affect me

Bit_Kid_ZzZzzz

hellhound_, well, i think its silly dedicating processing power and work to something that is the fault and responsibility of another platform

Bit_Kid_ZzZzzz your router should have a table of that

ran autoconf from the alsa-driver folder. absolutely nothing happened =/

http://rafb.net/p/UA5wW261.html

hummm strange for some reason firefox is not displaying any of the portage index sites… it says it is loaded but just a blank screen

someone here with a pentium D processor?

_thiago_, here.

i am runing a webserver and ftp jboss server hosting would anyone recommand the cks-sources kernel for it

dawn`chorus, what’s your CFLAGS configuration?

_thiago_, “-O2 -march=prescott -pipe”

nolimitsoya, yes it is, but I think that Iceweasel would be more “free”, and also it includes some extra features (security?)

corrideat, the only thing i know of that sets iceweasle apart from its firefox brethren is the branding. debian user, are you?
bon echo

Hi, I was in the middle of an emerge -uD world and the power came out of my laptop…now when I started back into gentoo it wouldn’t load my nvidia module or my ALSA module.
I was almost to the end of the emerge too
should I proceed w/ the rest of the emerge?
what could have gone wrong

lonestar3030, nothing is replaced untill the compile is complete. all should be safe

why does gentoo require everything to be compiled from source, don’t people got better things to do.. i mean it takes a lota time and effort

it only had 2 more packages to emerge

emerge –resume

has anyone else had trouble loading sites with the lastest ebuild of firefox 2.0.0.5? i am getting a lot of blank pages but they load fine in konqueror

lonestar3030, emerge –resume

nolimitsoya, I am a Gentoo user,

Davy_Jones, well, thats sorta the point… go use debian, if a binary dist suits you better

but also have a PC wioth Debian

I don’t think the power outage during emerge messed up your system, you most likely need to re-emerge nvidia and alsa because you booted a new kernel

hrm
well I will do the –resume 1st

http://rafb.net/p/ASVV2v41.html

finish the emerge withe emerge –resume then emerge -1 nvidia-drivers and it should update itself to the current kernel

I want to include functionality for mysql, but I have a dedicated machine that runs it. Can I include the mysql use flag, while still not installing the mysql server?

What about the ALSA

i know, i am using a debian distro, but i was just wondering why would one go through such hassle

You can either reboot or manually start the nvidia after that.
Same difference, they are both kernel modules and work the same

anyone know how to not have a app debug its output to the terminal when you run it there?

lonestar3030, you might also want to look into the module-rebuild tool, to rebuild packages automagicaly for new kernels
Davy_Jones, its funŽ!

Because u can make your environment very much tailored to ur machine.

oh, and that…

Thx I will check that too.

What group do I need to belong to to read cds?

Davy_Jones, besides, having done som benchmarking between my gentoo partition and my debian partition playing hd content, the debian partition had an “accident” :P
n3kl, cdrom

how do i get a scrollbar in xterm

hmm

now you’re talking

use aterm or eterm

firedemonsic remember what i said about configure ?

i don’t hate anything more than a slow computer

already a member. ANything else

Davy_Jones, processor usage was 30% higher on debian, playing the same clip…

anyone know how to not have a app debug its output to the terminal when you run it there?

nolimitsoya, (Linux 2.6.20-vs2.3.0.9-gentoocorrideat i686]) Well, I don’t care about the logo, but wanted to know.

n3kl, cdr/cdrw, plugdev, etc…

put your mouse in the xterm window, press ctrl and press middle mouse

n3kl, try ‘optical’ group as well.

that should give u an option

lonestar3030, i read that page doesn’t work

hrm

i want flags

converge, pass the quiet flag for that app?

firedemonsic now, ive just looked at the src you have now, and the configure script is not fit for release – it will build support for all cards possible i guess

did you get my links?

not .Xdefaults

i honestly dont care
as long as my card is one of the ones it buiolds support for

ah

so its
autoconf, then the ./configure mumbo jumbo?
sorry im a bit lost

firedemonsic ./configure && make all install should get you started

xterm -sb

but there’s some manual which desperately wants to be read

the person who made the scrollbar in xterm needs to be shot

xterm -sb

..Xresources

if not already dead

dawn`chorus: does not exit

clicking different mouse buttons to go up and dow

anyone here watching the youtube debates on CNN? if so, did you get the link to work from firefox?

i am runing a webserver and ftp server would anyone recommand the cks-sources kernel for it

autoreconf –install –force && ./configure && make (you can copy paste noone will ever have copyright on this one 8′] )

how can I include mysql functionality without installing a php mysql web hosting server?

http://gentoo-wiki.com/Groups

t35t0r, whats wrong with shift+arrow or shift+pgdn/up?

dawn`chorus: ah, thanks

n3kl, not sure where I got optical from. sorry.

I would just use Eterm
thats what i use

cannot find input file: toplevel.config.in
toplevel.config.in

converge, prgname 2my.err.out

hi i have a p4 Ht, in my make.conf i have CFLAGS=”-march=pentium4 -O3 ” is that ok?

Gentoo doesn’t have a special mysql package, so your going to get it installed to compile software.

dawn`chorus: meh

http://rafb.net/p/UA5wW261.html

seems like there should be more flexibility with that

http://rafb.net/p/ASVV2v41.html

I’ve hacked the /etc/init.d/mysql script to have a exit 0; in the beginning to kill it

jon___, no it isnt. never use -o3 globaly
jon___, in fact, never use it at all…

jon___, i’d go with -O2, rather than -O3

jon___ -O2 will serbe you just as well. make sure to include -pipe and probably -fomit-frame-pointer and i like -mfpmath=sse too

iif i change that now will i have to recompile the whole system?

jon___ no

jon___, not have to, but you should

anyone use vnc for windows?

I do

what server do you use?

KlrSpz, its better to ask for information than people

i got it es thanks

firedemonicsic && is allmost a synonym for enter

Why should we, this channel has enough spam without it having offtopic chat

ok so could you give me good example

the server that installs with it

jon___, of what?

KlrSpz i’ve used realvnc and tightvnc

not client, the server that runs on the windows box
tight seems to stop polling after 20-60 seconds

so is CFLAGS=”-O2 -march=pentium4″
ok?

somebody, whats the opensource ati driver pkg called?

jon___, use -pipe as well.

jon___ you want -pipe

tdr, wouldnt mfpmath=sse be included in the arch set?

TuxProbe, no! is run this if the before prg exit 0

Do the machine have plenty of RAM? then add -pipe

nolimitsoya nope, it uses the 387 stuff by default

1gb

not sure what you mean by server then. It isntalls a client and a service. I thougt you meant the service

jon___, thats plenty of ram. use -pipe. and you might be able to get away without swap

for windows though, not linux

tdr, hm… how about atlonxp? i might waant to change my flags then :P
*-a

i’m connecting FROM linux, but i want to view the windows PC
nvm

KlrSpz, tightvnc

nolimitsoya the 64 bit -march setting use it by default. athlon-xp doesn’t set that either

i’m using tight 1.3.9, but it seems extremely buggy

i’m having a problem getting bridging to properly work on my system….i can get the bride started, but if i restart the bridge once it’s running i get this error: network interface br0 does not exist, Please verify hardware or kernel module (driver)

tdr, gee… ill get right to setting it then

KlrSpz, if is a win-pro you may use rcp + nx

I had a windows and red hat box that I could view from each other using real vnc. tight vnc was buggy for me too

ok what should i do about glibc, when i try to comepile /splashutils-1.4.2 it tells me to emerge glibc with nptl but i dont think its in use anymore

for me no…

es, yeah but telling my wife how to forward the port is going to be a pain

TuxProbe, ‘./configure’ from the alsa-driver directory returns the error “cannot find toplevel.config.in”
then ‘make all’ returns the same error and aborts

KlrSpz, well that’s the best solution

anyone?

FireDemonSiC, why ould you run configure manually?

oi who controls the live cds?

Why are you not letting emerge handle it or use the alsa in the kernel?

Please recompile glibc
* with the ‘nptl’ USE flag enabled.
Please recompile glibc
* with the ‘nptl’ USE flag enabled.

so emerge glibc with nptl

sorry for flood

could someone look at my grub.conf and fstab and tell me why this wont boot? http://rafb.net/p/ASVV2v41.html http://rafb.net/p/UA5wW261.html

dunno why you aren’t using nptl anyway

its not a option in the use flags for

sure it is
what arch are you running?

/etc/portage/package.use

im using 2.6

Miravlix, were trying to see if theres a newly released driver for my card in the driver package

i686

Then use alsa-drivers?

aes_ebu, where does it get stuck when you try booting?

x86, 64?

Error 21

x86

yeah, thats what i downloaded
via CVS

then yeah, it exists

now im trying to install them

do emerge -pv glibc , you’ll see it in there

No alsa-drivers is in portage

adeel_n Error 21

FireDemonSiC, unmask the cvs version in portage instead

Don’t download source unless it isn’t in portage

bbiaf

aes_ebu, you should look up what error code 21 means in grub

lol

“Unknown boot failure”

I did. Says the partition doesn’t exist, but it does

The alsa in kernel is up to date these days though so alsa-drivers is pointless now

aes_ebu, might you have pointed grub to the wrong partition? grub language is a bit strange…

so what emerge alsa?

jon___, what profile are you using ?

FireDemonSiC, emerge -1 alsa-drivers

aes_ebu, i’m assuming hdb means your 2nd hard drive right?

FireDemonSiC, or is it driver…?

ok for some reason i thought i had 2.6
but i guess i was wrong
its emerging now

worked once i took off the “s”

yes, I have 2 drive in the machine and I am trying to install it on the larger one which is the slave

jon___, you do have 2.6, unless you went out of your way not to. your just emerging a newer version

how can i check version of glibc im using

jon___, eix glibc

aes_ebu, what does grub say when you type in ‘root (hd1,0)’ ?

jon___, emerge –info

jon___, assuming you have eix installed…

returned the error
“ALSA is already compiled into the kernel”

FireDemonSiC, then uncompile it in :P

but i know the kernel level ALSA does not support my card
alright

well i just did emerge glibc and it is grabbing 2.5.4

Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0×83

jon___, gcc-config -l

jon___, eix glibc

sorry
[1] i386-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.1 *
[2] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.6

what directory was make menuconfig in again?

aes_ebu, have you installed grub on to your 2nd hard drive, by doing the root (hd1,0) setup (hd1) ??

jon___, ops wrong window

wasnt it like /etc/linux?

cd /usr/src/linux

ty

usr/src/linux

yes, but I just did it again

so does that mean anything?

Hmm, something is not right, you shouldn’t have mixed i686 and i386 have you messed with CHOST?

aes_ebu, well your grub.conf and /etc/fstab look normal

I thought so too but it sure wont boot

i’m having trouble restarting my gentoo ethernet bridge, anyone have any ideas?
aes_ebu, you can try manually typing in those commands at the grub prompt on boot and see what it does

adeel_n, what does trouble mean? down/up doesnt work?

I never get a grub prompt

CHOST=”i686-pc-linux-gnu”

nolimitsoya, well i can start the bridge fine…but if i issue a ‘/etc/init.d/net.br0 restart’ it fails bringing back up the bridge

aes_ebu, did you install grub using the manual install method? if not, please do

hello

aes_ebu, well you get the black and white grub screen that shows ‘Gentoo Linux 2.6.21-4r’ right?

aes_ebu, look at the device.map and also consider what for the bios is the first disk (in a sata/ide sytem this can be tricky)

adeel_n, but down/up works? in that case id look the other way and be happy, but thats me…

crap i dont have much more time, my wife is waking

no, it says grub is starting then just Error 21

heh
:]

How do you mount ISO files, as a dvd-rom / cdrom drive?

jon___, oh teh horror

That didn’t answer my question, have you modified CHOST?

aes_ebu, oh, then you don’t have grub installed properly on the disk…

n0vus mount -o loop file /directory

no

I will try to manually install now

nolimitsoya, how do i test down/up? just do ‘ifconfig br0 up/down’ ?

havent touched it

Something is definately not right there, you should have i686- gcc 4.x.x

n0vus, -o loop file.iso dest/

adeel_n, /etc/init.d/eth0 down

how can i fix

adeel_n, replace eth0 with your bridge, oc

n0vus http://cdemu.sourceforge.net/ to emulate it as an actual device. I have NEVER needed to use this though

well right now glibc 2.5.4 is emerging

Dunno, since I don’t know where your system broke
whats profile-config list * set to?

nolimitsoya, well the down/up scripts kind of work…i lose my routing information when i cycle it

Command is just “profile-config list” the active line is marked with a star

ok so new glibc might fix this?

No

im emerging 2.5.4-r4

Messed up CHOST is easiest fixed by reinstalling

is this bad?
i didnt touch it

And what’s the best program to extract dvd Iso files?

dd

Maybe you installed from a mix of old and new files?

i hate it when partition magic just stops doing anything… hope it’s still running and not messing up my partition

thanks ^^;

yea i did
i didnt have net

Or your system is very very old

so i had to use my old packages from distfiles

nolimitsoya, well the down/up scripts kind of work…i lose my routing information when i cycle it

adeel_n, well thats odd… or perhaps not. what routing info?

nolimitsoya, my default route (in this setup gateway 192.168.0.1)

yea well i had some old files, i didnt have net so to install gentoo i had to use old files

adeel_n, and you dont get a new dhcp lease, or what?
adeel_n, or are you running static?

nolimitsoya, oh, this is static (i’m doing a dry run)

adeel_n, ah… have no clue why that would happen, but then ive never played much with networking either :o )

hey can someone help me with this http://rafb.net/p/r9wpnU38.html
http://rafb.net/p/r9wpnU38.html

nolimitsoya, i wish i was able to get more verbose output as to what was going on

via cli, how would i connect to an Access point.. say, using iwconfig?

adeel_n, and im sure you can. :P ever contemplated the likes of, say, shorewall?

There is some howto’s on upgrading, but it might be to late already.

systm, sudo wire my wifi :o )

nolimitsoya, i’ve looked into shorewall a little…but i don’t need a standalone system like shorewall is supposed to be (if i recall correctly)

If you haven’t done much, it wouldn’t take long to download up to date install tar’s and start over?

huh?

adeel_n, its basicly a front end for iptables/netfilter, so you dont have to muddle through the serrings manually
systm, me is being teh funney :P sorry…

nolimitsoya, what kind of frontend? web based or gui?

adeel_n, cli
iirc…
might be ncurses…

nolimitsoya, ooo niec

hey can someone help me with this http://rafb.net/p/r9wpnU38.html i really need ftp

how bad do you need ftp?

g33k_, why not use vsftpd? it’s really simple to setup

is it?
how do i remove proftpd then?

g33k_, it took me all of 5 minutes
g33k_, emerge -C proftpd

when is make.conf read? Before the emerge, before each package installation?

g33k_, there should also be a howto on gentoo-wiki.com about vsftpd

k how do i setup vsftpd ?

g33k_, http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_vsftpd

google.com gentoo wiki vsftpd
more to the point

It’s complaining about missing TCP/IP support in the kernel, don’t see how using another application is going to solve that

how do i have sshd auto start on reboot?

rc-update add sshd default

rc-update add sshd default ?
lol

heh

give me time to type lol

Miravlix, i didn’t get that out of the error message, but if that’s what it is, then someone should mention that to g33k

ai_family

installed manually and still getting the same error

aes_ebu, and you are booting the right drive?

Thats the ‘big’ thing and is some TCP/IP kernel supports thats missing.

Miravlix, yeah i had no idea what the ai_family was in reference to

YAYAY

I am loading grub on hd0 and telling it root (hd1,0)

thanks n3kl
rep++
took me like 3mins lol

aes_ebu, and bios is booting hda?

BIOS is set to IDE0

Hi there, ppl i am inexperienced in gentoo and i need some help

600 dpi x 300 dpi, if my printer says that, does that mean my printer is over 300 dpi?

aes_ebu, then im lost

sorry for asking a hardware question in here, but it’s pretty simple, and I just want to double check

yeah, me too. that is why I am here :-(

nowimprov, should mean it can print a square with 600lines of 300point width
nowimprov, or the other way, depending on paper orientation and such…

is there anybody available to assist me

nowimprov, the square being 1″x1″, oc…

And1, not likely, unless you ask a question.

Is there anything worth installing on linux that edits video?

And1, no, this channel is completely empty

A guess would be that proftpd has ipv6 support enabled, but the kernel doesn’t

I am hoping to find someone to assist me in installing via ssh

do as you would do normally
but, remotely

And1, ask for info or help, not people

nolimitsoya, right, but the darn tickets on ticketmaster say it has to be at least 300 dpi, but like you said that must be what it means

how can I clear the MBR on both drives?

ok. everything went ok until i had to install kernel. “Arch is not” ….symlink errors

If you don’t intend to use ipv6, you should add -ipv6 to use flags in make.conf

I can’t think of the name of it right now but there is a gui program that’s beta right now
supposed to be decent

dd

The ipv6 flag is a default flag in most profiles

k, will try
any options?

6] Transfer failed. Use the Transfer Queue for automatic

dd if=/dev/zero of=device_to_zero_mbr_on bs=1 count=448
aes_ebu, ^^

Not sure man. Its been ages since I have used vsftpd. I have since replaced the concept with https. But read your logs.

bs=512 ?

wheres the logs?

512 if you want to erase the partition table as well as the MBR.

where’re :p

I don’t want to do that

disable firewalls and make sure that you are routing properly. dnat and snat are something you need to pay attention to if you are going to put this on the internet
there are a few iptables modules you will need to load

/var/log/_______

what should I check to make sure sshd is forwarding X11?

jorvis, run an X11 client.
xclock is a good one.

yes, when I try to open anything I get “Can’t open display”
even if I ssh in with -XY

OMG im an ass

jorvis, then it clearly isn’t working properly.

i forgot to uncomment write lol

too tired to work on this anymore. l8r all

jorvis, did you enable X11 forwarding in your sshd_config?

in the sshd man page I only found info about disabling it, so I assumed it was on by default
my sshd.confd is nearly empty

“X11Forwarding Specifies whether X11 forwarding is permitted. The argument must be “yes” or “no”. The default is “no”.”

ah, I didn’t know the config had its own man
thanks

it goes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config btw, not conf.d/sshd

so i have the i810 drivers working with dri enabled, and glx working, but mplayer still has skippy dvd playback, as does xine

thanks to you both … works now

edwindoebler, run aiglx instead

how would i check to see if that’s what im’ using anyways?

aiglx is enabled by default.
but that’s not the issue. What video output driver are you using with mplayer?

edwindoebler, sorry, i read xgl instead of glx. forget about it would you please :o )

lol yeah i did cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i aiglx and found that its working

useless use of cat! grep -i aiglx /var/log/Xorg.0.log

but i get a lot of “3d driver claims to not support visual “blahblah”
i love how linux has 189283984234 ways to skin a cat…

grep a cat, rather… :P

X11 (ximage/xshm)

edwindoebler, that’d do it.

*shm

edwindoebler, mplayer -vo xv …

i have gl and gl2 avail under options, i think i tried xv but i’ll do it again now

“mplayer -vo gl -dr …” is often pretty good, too.

bash upgrades is the devil, going to be months before my system isn’t running the old bash

I don’t understand something about how gentoo uses vhosts. I install cacti, now I edit the config.php and change the values and I get Warning: mysql_pconnect() [function.mysql-pconnect]: Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock’ (2) in /usr/share/php/adodb/drivers/adodb-mysql.inc.php on line 376. ?

mplayer -vo xv gets me “no video”, i guess i’ll check if i compiled with vo support?

edwindoebler, make sure you have the xv USE flag enabled.

just discovered i don’t… lol thank you!

zsh :p

As always your comments seems a bit misplaced, zsh as shell has the same issue

what issue

It wont cleanup until I close all instances of the old shell.

neato

Miravlix, killall -HUP bash ?

Wont reload the binary
killall bash && killall sh would take down KDE and I don’t know what else use scripts

is there a way to see the available shares on an rsync server?

killall bash wouldn’t do a whole lot, as bash ignores SIGTERM.
not sure why you’re so hung up over it though, why is it so important that the new binary is used immediately?

It’s a big support issue that all of the system doesn’t run the same version and the update might include security fixes

then schedule 5 minutes of downtime in the middle of the night.

Yeah, except the concept of night doesn’t exist in this day and age.

where do I change the database that php/adodb is trying to connec tto?

The web is nice this way, it possible to make configurations where you could restart individual systems without creating downtime

i just installed klamav and i noticed that my system freezes when it is looking for updates on clamav or klamav… i am also running guarddog and I wonder if there is a port that i need to open for klamav/clamav

so yeah… mplayer -vo xv /dev/hdc just makes mplayer crash horribly

Still dreaming about the day we can hot load kernels, without restarting

I’m trying to move my /usr, /var and /opt to another partition, the system boots, but my wireless driver is not found. was ‘cp -R /usr/* /mnt/sda1′ the right method to do that?

anyone know a good read for upgrading pam with deprecated modules? anything but http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/pam/upgrade-0.99.xml because it doesn’t tell you what you actually need to do

mikeg8, well, kernel modules are usually located in /lib.

I beleive you need more cp flags to get file permissions and stuff

hmm, know which ones? thats what I was thinking but it mostly works, its just wireless that doesn’t so far
i guess i need -p and stuff
do i need to always follow symbolic links?

I think many people opt for using tar for this

http://pastebin.ca/631581
I hate opt
heh

But I haven’t had a reason to do it in ages, so I’m not up to date with the details

i used old files to install my system initially, what are the steps in getting everything up to date

Zeroth404, libstdc++-v3 definitely doesn’t need gcc 3 to build, so I suggest addressing the problem that something wants gcc 3.

Huh?

apparently pam-0.99.8.0-r2 thinks I need pam_pwdb, pam_radius, and pam_timestamp, and I’m not sure what to do

what would be the appropriate tar command then? to keep everything correct? to backup /usr or something

If it was a fully old system then read the howtos but since your system is fubared, restarting is the best option

http://pastebin.com/m1c40a200
its a freshly installed system from the 2007.1 cd
manual, not text or gui installers

any way i can tell emerge to skip pam and go on with upgrading the rest of the 422 packages?

Skipping pam is kinda like shooting yourself in the head and expecting to keep going after

it won’t upgrade

how can i check my glibc version?

Your problem isn’t glibc so what does it matter?

view the second link I posted?

You have a 2.4 system with 2.6 config files

how do I get debian rename in gentoo?

no, it was a 2.6 system

Then explain why you have i386-stuff?

ie rename ’s/foo/bar/’ * instead of rename foo bar *

i also have i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.6

Zeroth404, emerge libstdc++-v3
Zeroth404, then try again.

i miss the days when shadow was it

Precisely, you shouldn’t have MIXED

i just installed klamav and i noticed that my system freezes when it is looking for updates on clamav or klamav… i am also running guarddog and I wonder if there is a port that i need to open for klamav/clamav

well direct me in removing the old
please

doesnt need gcc3 that time

or a howto or somthing

bug somewhere? I’d be happy to report it if I knew what it was :-p

Zeroth404, so that worked?

well, i’m trying –skipfirst until someone can tell me where to look for fixing pam not upgrading

libstdc++-v3 is emerging without gcc-3

help, new system doesn’t boot, using genkernel. activating mdev determining root device block device /dev/sda6 is not a valid root device

Zeroth404, well yeah, it wasn’t installing libstdc++-v3 before.

You didn’t tell us what the error is, so how are we supposed to help?

Zeroth404, the question is whether or not it works after emerging libstdc++-v3

it claims it’s using one of three modules not supported in 0.99

we’ll know soon.
works a-okay now.

it’s discussed on http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/pam/upgrade-0.99.xml

no gcc-3 needed for mplayer this time

can anyone recommend anything that works pretty much like audacious, but with a different interface?
that is a simple music player, not something like amarok

what ever happened to xmms?

it evolved into audacity
err
audacious

damn…. i stop using linux for like 2 years, come back and its gone… then had to struggle with rhythmbox for 2 days to make that work

hey, If I have a server with ssh open, and I need to remote desktop to a computer on the same network at port 3389, how could I use ssh tunneling to do this?

edwindoebler, wny not just run audacious? besides, amarok is far more mature than rythmbox…

http://rafb.net/p/OuBQUM23.html

xmms authors ditched xmms years ago and started developing xmms2, but they haven’t finished yet.

as i was looking around, i never saw it, so i just went with rhythmbox

Hi all.

that’s my problem, the build.log from trying to emerge pam -u

There is also amarok, zinf, and digitaldj.

and i thought amarok was kde based

Is there a good reason not to use reiserfs in /var/ ?

Zeroth404, Seems to be a known problem, see bug 161953 and bug 183766

edwindoebler, it is, but nothing is stopping you from running qt apps alongside gtk

https://bugs.gentoo.org/161953 nor, P2, All, nicolas@litchinko.fr-dev-portage@gentoo.org, RESOLVED, WORKSFORME, || ( x y ) prefers y if any version of y and no version of x is installed
https://bugs.gentoo.org/183766 nor, P2, All, jakub@gentoo.org-toolchain@gentoo.org, NEW, pending, package.mask =sys-devel/gcc-3.3*

audacius is the only real choice at the moment.

I’ve been trying all day to get php5 to support mysql…. Anyone gotten it to work?

Why can I not compile a package to support a server without actually installing the server? This seems like a very simple thing.

It is kde based but you dont need to run kde to use it.
