So basicly -usr-portage will give me a list of all the software thats available to install Then I just emerge

nice

Do revdep-rebuild -X and wait

ok

i do that in my local portage dir?

revdep-rebuild always gives me three packages: mesa, gnupg and hal

ebuild (path to the ebuild you need a digest of) digest

Beats me. I only use text editors. I think wysiayg interfaces for web development are absurd.

good evening….chatting from tty3/LiveCD :0)

Does ldd verify that they’re broken?

aja, not an actually useful site… just someone’s portfolio and homepage I just want to mash up together
but I want it bull**** free

OH. I use a Mac for stuff like that. Don’t know about the OO product.

what’s ldd ?

so I guess OpenOffice is standards compliant?
like all other open source stuff ?

Prints shared library dependencies

trip0d_ for the most part

let’s see

i prefer abiword and gnumeric over oowriter and oocalc
if you just need a word and excel replacement

abiword is very nice and fast

Damn WYSIWYG word processors. LaTeX FTW

vim!!!

hehe

I think OpenOffice is perfect
just wondering if it makes good stuff

slow, based on java

I use vi all the time

java == garbage

Heh. OSS stuff tends to be fairly standards-compliant, but it’s by no means guaranteed. I’m not an OO fan (I think they took the Office emulation a little too far). But I’m a luddite with things like that.

OpenOffice == garbage

Not true! It’s good for slowing things down!

lol SocialSecurity

time emerge OpenOffice (Elapsed 400days23Hours2secs)

haha

Seriously, though, Java is good for cross-platform apps
Then again, OpenOffice has a lot of C code, so I don’t see _why_ they use Java
Well, this is very OT. Should stop.

Inherited code base from Sun.

I compiled open office in 4 hours

w/e I’m NOT getting into this discussion

I call Solaris, Slowaris for a reason (only good thing is running java hosting apps in Solaris)

OpenOffice is good for peeps looking to move to Linux and be able to work on M$ docs

this discussion can go so many ways…. please let’s get back to gentoo

gedit is a good replacement

Abiword opens docs normally..

gedit is a good notepad/wordpad replacement.. still prefer abiword (word) and gnumeric (excel)

I can like start lecturing right now
gedit is my replacement for MS Visual Studio 2005

And if you’re suggesting that gedit is a good replacement for an office suite, I’ll have to disagree
bAnd if you’re suggesting that gedit is a good replacement for an office suite, I’ll have to disagree/b

trip0d_ please no

vim is my replacement for gedit

I use vi all the time

lol @ SocialSecurity

vi/vim
whatever you have

real men use ed.

Drop it. Unless this gets headed off, we’re about 90 seconds from the standard emacs vs. vi nonsense.

ed ick

no ee, no ed, no nano, no emacs

lol

Nobody mentioned emacs here.. emacs user.

Ok ok

yes, ldd shows that the libraries are linked against libexpat.so.0 , and/or libcurl

And gnupg emerge is broken too?

I updated both expat and curl

Well, I compiled my kernel (for the first time) and emerged madwifi-ng but cannot modprobe ath_pci. Complains about Invalid Module format. Any ideas?

did you guys know about the secret option in emacs? it can serve breakfast in bed and do your laundry!
bdid you guys know about the secret option in emacs? it can serve breakfast in bed and do your laundry!/b

to create manifest i need all the files specified by the ebuild to be downloaded? anyway round it?

Are you booted into the new kernel?
No

what is correct -march type for Athlon 64?

Rather, yes to first, no to second

-march=k8 (same as -march=athlon64)

yeah but you need 4 hands to hit the key combination for it

ah ty

XxEntropyxX, ‘athlon64′, believe it or not.

4 hands? you need 10 plus 5 feet

its actually k8 by default

Aja was right, stop the holy war

that sucked, a lot of those files are not needed

I’m in my ubuntu partition now

don’t remember. let’s try again (I’m so tired I can’t remember these things anymore)

I was using x86_64 and amd64 and it was puking on me :P

You need to boot into the kernel the module is built for to modprobe it

im on it now

I’m looking for a program to help me find where all my space is being taken up on my harddrive, ideally something like sequoia view would be nice, anyone one know of anything?

6 EDT 2007 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ AuthenticAMD

But my new kernel booted from grub with out errors

csplinter “df”

KDirStat

CFLAGS=”-march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe -msse3″

Can anyone tell me where I can find out how to install software like internet browsers and whatnot

I think Gnome was advertising something like that

that is what I use for x86_64

not what I meant

might also be /home/entropy/pr0n
lol

the -march options are listed in `man gcc’

du | less

thx ill give that a try

!google linux visual disk space

http://kontrawize.blogs.com/kontrawize/2006/08/where_did_all_m.html

Draconx thx!

lol im trying to avoid deleting that one

lol

I reccomend you read the Gentoo Handbook. Emerge is the command to install EVERYTHING

^

sadly im serious

baobab (good drive usage analyzer)

lol

with pretty graphs and statistics

Was looking at gentoo-sources and it seems busted in 2007.0…was this fixed in latest portage?

There are various browsers to install, look in the www-client category in portage

csplinter, emerge -pv baobab (disk usage analyzer)

I booted into the compiled new kernel and modprobed ath_pci, but errors were geared towards the formal kernel

What do you mean, busted?

In gentoo you’ll have to become used to RTFM.

So it works under the new kernel, or ti doesn’t?

rtfm ?

SocialSecurity I threw it into genkernel and it puked

thx for all your tips, I’ll look in to them

Read the Fucking Manual

I had to emerge vanilla sources to get a kernel built

er, forgot censor, sorry

It does not

Pastebin error, please?

language.

SocialSecurity, Oh, thats not a prob for me, hehe

Aware. I apologize, I forgot to censor.

and no “RTFM”ing in here please.

In grub it is listed as 1.*.*
I didnt copy it, must reboot
brb

lemme see if this basic kernel installed….brb (rebooting)

gnupg emerged well

nobody tell csplinter that / is using 100% of his drive

Any tips on where I can read on that so I can get some basic software installed?

baobab and kdirstat are the sort of programs i was looking for, thx again guys

To install software, use emerge (package name)

baobab is much nicer

sure: gentoo.org/docs

and np csplinter

The package names are located in subdirectories of /usr/portage

hello, how do i get gensplash to work on all 6 vc’s? I enabled all 6 in /etc/conf.d/splash like so… SPLASH_TTYS=”1 2 3 4 5 6″

Thanks. SocialSecurity, I’m looking for programs like OpenOffice and FireFox. Can I just emerge those?

it’s pretty easy. if you want to install mozilla-firefox, you just do “emerge mozilla-firefox”
as root

Got it. Thats what I thought but I didn’t know the exact names to install. thanks

xjman, emerge -v openoffice-bin mozilla-firefox

also try to do “emerge eix”. then you’ll be able to search for packages doing “eix something”

The exact names are in the portage tree in /usr/portage

do the -bin, don’t compile openoffice (will take 16 hours plus)

Is manual fetch off for Java yet, by the way?

no idea

it took me 2hours only

16hours?? I have a slow CPU, and firefox compiles in less than 3 hours

And how many distcc nodes did you have?

pablo__, i was talking openoffice
i haven’t compiled openoffice since I had an althon thunderbird 1.2

none.

I wish to invest in this new breakthrough in supercomputing technology. *drools*

i think OOffice is crap

just one bada** overclocked cpu.

oh, sorry. Yeah, openoffice is a killer. Never tried, never will.

Ah, but can you cook breakfast on it yet?

x6800 at 4.2GHz, under phase change.

i wonder how long openoffice would take on my x2 5600+, 4GB DDR2 800

4.2 GHz? I didn’t think the speed of light would allow that…

Someone on my Savage server bought some 8800GT a while ago, it constantly overheated during gameplay :P
We joked that he used it to cook his meals

i watercool my gpu,chipset
search youtube for “exploding cpu” lol

ALSA = borken

MAGIC SMOKE!

probably only 6hours.

How so?
ALSA works normally for most people..

alsa was broken for me in the 2.6.20 kernel I tried

Well that didn’t work….

PCM didn’t work on my sblive for some reason

arecord doesn’t work. strace shows a bunch of ENXIO errors, and I can’t record using OSS mode for no good reason

ok time for sleep
gnite peeps

Is there a secret to getting ViaRhineII to work ?
Every time I vary the interface I get IOFlags errors

emu10k1 driver?

I discovered that ths OSS driver for the emu10k1 is still in the kernel source, even though there’s no access to it from the kernel config screen (unless it’s masked somehow) so I’m building it manually, but it’s glitchy with respect to hardware initialization

yeah
it was in the config last I checked

Is there a preempt kernel source in portage?

It’s Creative hardware, it has infamously bad Linux support
Preempt?

(ie a few days ago when I built my kernel)

(RealTime)
I am looking for 2.6.22-rt

uh, emu10k1 is pretty much the best developed alsa driver there is

emu10k1 works great under Linux.

not on this side of the monitor

Let me rephrase that. _CREATIVE_’s support for Linux is bad.

So, basicly /usr/portage will give me a list of all the software thats available to install? Then I just emerge the program and wham. I can use it? Are there any apps out there that are “To die for” that I should keep an eye out on?

well, creative supported the development of the emu10k1 driver.

ok so i’m in a new install, and trying to emerge gnome, and the use flag +doc is causing circular dependencies

According to slashdot, basic realtime has been in mainline since 2.6.18

you mean the old “obsolete” OSS section? can’t find it…

oh

i need to not emerge the extra docs with gnome?

Pastebin

http://pastebin.ca/660603

yes,run it and watch out for expat, if you spot it attack!

I cant find my compiled kernel

sorry, i can’t right now cause its on a diff. workstation

Uh

you can find the source in /usr/src/linux/sound/oss/emu10k1/ and I can manually build it, but if the card has already been initialized after bootup, this driver screws up and doesn’t work right.

slashdot? That commercial site is still around? I haven’t seen it in about 7 years

Did you do make install modules_install?

expat? Attack as in flog, or attack as in download asap?

i’m emergeing it right now wtih USE=”-doc”

Yes, just as you said….

Then the kernel should be in /boot

It compiled and installed with out errors

You need to load the kernel that /usr/src/linux points to

There are tens of thousands of people running emu-10k1 hardware under ALSA – it’s actually the most common example in ALSA how-tos.

go here.. gentoo.org/doc

But no sign of 1.*.* in /boot

Wait, 1.*.*?
Either that’s a REALLY OLD kernel or you have the ver number wrong

I’m on my way now, my windows laptop has a fun quirk with doing anything productive. It fails and crashes the program.

or it was a typo

Well, that’s just what it dumped to my menu.lst file

What’s Windows?

Pastebin the menu.lst?

Did you look at the pastebin?

Gentoo will let you gain back control of your hardware

Yes

damn, how do i delete a softlink directory?

It’s in there

That’s the _entire_ menu.lst?

unlink

I almost upgraded my laptop….then I remembered Gentoo will bring me back my resources

Er, you have to manually add the entry to menu.lst after installing it

Ok, hang on

Not a Directory ??

ahh

I was looking at the latest Ubuntu Gutsy…they got libraries linked at 2MB each

ok now it works without the slash

what a waste of memory

thanks likewhoa

What libraries?

http://pastebin.ca/660604 My entire menu.lst

All of the amd64 ones :P

All right, and the kernel you built was 2.6.19?
(The one you built recently and build madwifi against)

apparently, but that was the one I had originally insalled
Also, yes, I emerged madwifi in that kernel

No, I mean what does /usr/src/linux point to

rebooted and then the format errors

readlink /usr/src/linux, please _

Ah, maybe…
huh
sec

FUCKITOL. Good luck, fellows. I’ll hit the sack.

X -config to change my resolution?

language.

xrandr command can change your resolution

Where in the kernel is framebuffer fb0 support to get high res on boot console?

use / to search

In usr/src just linux and linux-2.6.19-gentoo-r5

vesafb or vesafb-tng should be able to do that

tng being the better choice?

and linux based hosting services points to linux-2.6.19-gentoo-r5?

graphics

cool
ty

Thanks a lot, SocialSecurity. You’ve been very helpful. I don’t know how your brain manages to deal with so many problems at the same time, but, congratulations.

Yes symlink

Thanks.

how can I make dhcpcd start on boot?

it’s generally started from the net script

sorry, but this week has been very annoying. and it hasn’t yet finished.

And the .config in /usr/src/linux is the same .config used to build the kernel?

yeah, but forsome reasion on this install its not

if so, what’s in /boot (pastebin)?

never had a problem with it before

do you have net.[iface] in the default runlevel, and does /etc/init.d/net.[iface] exist?

yeah
think I got something
brb

I see xrandr gives me the resolutions, but am I missing how to change them?

I think

when I build in vesafb support do I need to throw a flag on grub loader to enable hish res?

change between the ones that are shown by xrandr, or change the ones shown by xrandr?

high*

xrandr –fb widthxheight
Change between the ones shown by xrandr

SocialSecurity will that support 1440×900?

xrandr -s then, yep

is it in the list?

I dont understand what you are asking

You configured the kernel properly before building, yes

How do I find out what the max resolution is for vesafb? I have a 1440×900 widscreen and it is way offset with current setup

using ‘make gconfig’ yes

vga=ask boot-time parameter, I believe

ty

All right, pastebin ls /boot

ok

third kernel attempt….
:P

http://pastebin.ca/660610

Add a new grub.conf entry for vmlinuz-2.6.19-gentoo-r5 and boot into that

try vga=791 for 1024×768 or 794 for 1280×1024 that should get you high res…

Is there some kind of database building app? I’m backing up my music collection to DVDs and I’m wondering how I’m gonna find stuff on the DVDs later…

I’m sorry, what?

bttb, just write a list.

Is not the same?

The kernel you built is in /boot, as vmlinuz-2.6.19-gentoo-r5

ok

The previous kernel was kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.19-gentoo-r5, which you booted into

Ok

So add a new grub.conf entry for the new kernel and boot into that

Ok

Too much work :-)

SQL? :P

bttb, presumably you are already creating such lists in order to burn the dvd in the first place. Just store that.

I wouldn’t mind. But it has to be an app so I don’t have to get into low-level stuff.
I burn with k3b. I don’t really make lists.

No idea, sorry

bttb, how do you indicate to k3b which files to burn to the dvd, then?

I use a directory structure to store my music, but that doesn’t work with DVDs

I use the mouse

Felt pen. Small writing. GO?

bttb, you don’t use the mouse to… make a list?

Too much work ;-)

And what about initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.19-gentoo-r5
?

That’s for the previous kernel entry
The kernel you configured has no initramfs

that’s what I do with my vorbis files on my hdd

So change to what?

bttb, I haven’t used k3b in years, but back then you had to make a list of all the files you wanted to burn to the disk.

You can add new entries in the grub.conf, you know

omit??

Yes, omit in the new entry

ok
Saving.. trying again… brb

I just drag’n'drop files into k3b and of it goes

any gedit plugin that can strip non -ascii characters in a document?

Actually, what prevents you from using a flatfile?

bttb, iirc, when you “drag’n'drop” the files into k3b, it adds them to a list, and when you’re done you click “Burn” and it goes.

never heard of that. Where can I find info on it?
yes, right

bttb, it also provided a “save” option which might be of interest to you.

Are you being sarcastic?

oh yes, but that’s not really for reading but more for being able to recreate the setup
nope. Not a native English speaker, though

hmm, what is the name of the alternative ati driver in the gentoo tree?

never heard the word “flatfile” before

portage tree i mean

I mean write it into a file. Something along the line of DVD number\n\t(song)\n\t etc (end)\n\nDVD number, etc

bttb, it should be trivial to convert whatever k3b saves as into a simple list for your perusal, if k3b doesn’t provide such a feature already.

ah, ok. that’s what Draconx suggested
OK guys, thanks. I’ll manage

:w is more efficient than the save button, I tell you.
Any luck?

SocialSecurity:
Kernel panik’

Kernel panic upon what?

Couldnt mount /root with any file system

hey, what do i need to mount CIFS shares? i need to build the filesystem into the kernel? i need the samba package? both?

unity, both.

thanks

Don’t think the kernel is configured properly.

So how do I configure it properly?

has anyone here been able to mount CIFS shares as a user, without root? (perhaps through an fstab entry?)

Shouldnt I be able to compile hosting it with my options of choicew/
?

Yes, within reasonable limitations

unity, yes, man mount.cifs

Choice?

unity, no fstab entries are required.

Reasonable limitations – ex, requirements to mount root must be met.
The documentation on configuring it properly is at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7.

Well, I have been frustrated with gentoo from the start, so no surprize

If you don’t want to do so, see the “Alternative: Using genkernel” section

Thanks, I will save that link, but it is neck resting time for me…

Doing so will require you to rebuild madwifi-ng
Goodnight

I will also look more in to genkernel, and thanks for all of your help.
Maybe we will do it again sometime
Thanks again, goodnight

ah, it looks like mount.cifs works fine as a user, but my fstab entries do not
/ryo/A /mnt/A cifs noauto,user,password=”" 0 0
(//ryo/A)
mount error: permission denied or not superuser and mount.cifs not installed SUID
but if i do `mount.cifs //ryo/A test`, then it works fine
yes, i have read/write permissions to /mnt/A

So I have compiled in ViaRhine support but when I reboot it can’t find eth0
talk about aggravating

but these fstab entries DO work as root

also vesafb is crap…..doesn’t give the same resolution as LiveCD
what package contains lspci?

pci-utils

ty

without the hyphen

yep…noticed

maybe the udev scripts already assigned another driver to eth0. Check /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

udev?

hi, how can i deinstall kde-base/kdetoys-meta-3.5.7

piece of software that takes over your hardware and populates your /dev directory

emerge -C …

emerge –unemerge kdetops-meta will unmerge the metapackage

there is still prbolem with kde-base/kworldwatch-3.5.7, because was removed from portage and kdetoys still depends on it

then emerge -pv –depclean will list the packages that are still on your system but not required by anything

you talking this to me ?

bttb …ty for the clue…I am showing eth0 as ViaRhine on LiveCD yet eth1 as ViaRhine on boot

sorta

hi

is there anyone here that is transfering video from dv?

does anyone know how i can record desktop movies?

i’ve done it before

coder camera?
lol

thats not funny

I thought it was

xvidcap is an old program that does it but there are probably a bunch of newer ones

you have to be a bit more specific

hmm

do you remeber what you had to do to get access to raw1394

You want something like Camtasia?

*remember

ironically there’s something listed called “recordmydesktop”

compile a bunch of things into the kernel, including raw1394

!google recordmydesktop

http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net/

i don’t remember exactly; try enabling a bunch of things under the firewire tab in the kernel configuration

requires Theora codec though

thanks

now all I need to do is figure out this vesafb mode thing….

fb?

80×25 and 130×20 suck

ugh

DeHackEd like how livecd does it….I can’t seem to get the same mode with vesafb

Symbol: IEEE1394_RAWIO [=y] — this looks about right

ok, so not M… that’s what i’ve got

DeHackEd was missing the correct mode….scan doesn’t produce correct response for display type…1024×768x256 = mode 305

seems to always be the same issue, perms on /dev/raw1394

!google vesafb

http://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~gerald/laptop/vesafb.txt

but i don’t know what else to try

gonna give this a try and eth1 see if it works

so you have /dev/raw1394, just with the wrong permissions?
so root can capture video but you want to do it as a user?

no, root can’t either
what i have right now is root video crw-rw

why did the upgrade to gnome 18 refuse to use the new libexpat?

if i try using dvgrab, i get no cam exists. kino and it make sure you have perms to raw1394

it kept complaining about not finding libexpat.so.0, when libexpat.so.1 was right there

since when does 0 == 1

The new expat has a different named lib, so everything linked against it needs to be rebuilt

woot, yeah i used revdep-rebuild but it kept failing

hmmm… XML Parsing Error: syntax error
chrome://mozapps/content/downloads/unknownContentType.xul
Line Number 1, Column 1:tValue, mimeLiteral);
just got that in firefox… trying to download a bz2

woot, it was like most of the gnome ebuilds were stuck on using so.0
and yes i did run ldconfig and evn-update

Did you try the trick that mzbot has?
/msg mzbot faq expat

mzbot, teach postmodern expat

expat-2.0.1 has been marked stable. However, it is not ABI compatible with earlier versions. To successfully upgrade and fix any reverse dependencies (along with several other issues), run: emerge =portage-2.1.2.9 && emerge -n portage-utils && emerge -qep –nospinner world |
grep –color=never -oFf (scanelf -plRBF ‘%F %n’ | awk ‘/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}’ | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e “libtool\ncurl”) | xargs emerge -1

thats no excuse

how do I get my xorg to default to single head mode?

kinectio1, don’t configure a dual head mode.

so how do I unconfigure it?

[R]: yep, it’s the only one I have

I can’t seem to google out the correct software, but I do recall that there exists a package for swapping laptop hardware profiles in Linux – you’d just call that script and it would modify things like xorg. Might be worth looking for…

nothing?

VesaTNG is supposedly not supported on amd64 but yet liveCD boots using it?

well enable them all, i’m sure you’ll figure out the right one… anything show up in dmesg?

xxentropyxx, it doesn’t.

its not the amd64 livecd then or its not vesatng

well what the heck is it using then? I can just copy the mode over and be done with this mess

ALSA device list:
Virtual MIDI Card 1

well, before. in the past i could just comment out one line in my xorg and it’d do single head just fine, but after a xorg upgrade i think that ability went away

xxentropyxx, the amd64 livecd uses vesafb.

whoops

you need to disable that midi thing also

Draconx do you know which mode it is throwing?
I’ve got 25 lines of text here with 80 chars per line….very impossible to use to get any work done

http://pastebin.com/d37213990

hmm

In alternative to the rather complex procedure for fixing expat described by mzbot, could I not simply downgrade to an older version?

Draconx says 791./.I will give that a try

Might as well get the pain over with now, if you can. Otherwise, possibly you could mask the new versions…

that’ll only work as long as you dont use anythign that requires the new one and/or the old one disapears

woot & [r]: I have no idea what expat is, but gathered from the chatter that it has something to do with X, which I don’t use.

XML parsing lib

i do nothing at all with xml

it has nothing to do with X

yes, but lots of apps do, like config file parsers

bob_, then it should be safe to remove it completely.
bob_, if nothing you have uses it.

that only works if the lib is written to be installed multiple times

Slotting was discussed, and shot down

okay, as long as it was considered

just upgrade your packages
its not this is the first or last time something like this is gonna happen
its a fact of life

With all due respect, [R], it reflect a poor decision on somebody’s part.

but whose? gentoo maintainers? expat maintainers?

is expat actually required by anything or is it just being triggered by the XML use flag?

stuff requires the new version
nothing you can do about that
lots of stuff requires it
it wouldn’t be installed if it wasn’t required
X requires it i belive

but if it’s that major a lib and it’s an API change, it should have been made to support slotting and multiple installation

no, Xorg doesn’t.

Tell that to ssmtp, which is installed although useless. Aha! so X requires it!
but I don’t use X – guis are for pussies.

but I’d bet GTK or its font libs, etc. use it

it may be useless… still required by something

don’t use any ncurses apps either?

well stuff doesnt magially install by tiself… somethign you have depends on it

guis are for lots of xterms

Ncurses I do use, but those don’t need this silly xml library do they?

nothing stopping you from hacking the ebuilds and removing the deps…

ncurses == gui

right… but really depends, or just triggered by an excess useflag?

How do I get sshd to work w/ wlan0?

Its not the same.

No, that’s what screen is for … :-)

gtk also doesn’t need expat btw
and plenty of CLI apps need xml stuff as well

can we try to figure what DOES need expat?

a) its your fault if you have stupid use flags b) if we are talking about ssmtp, its probably cron pulling it in… and cron requires a mialer
qdepends will tell you

GNU gettext needs expat.

frontconfig does for example, that’s probably one of the main reasons the dep propogates so much

Sounds like a job for grep! Actually, emerge -t will tell you what apps are being pulled in by what.

a – yes, it is my fault, i’m trying to figure out which. b – ssmtp is part of the default profile for not particularly good reason

lets put it this way… if its an issue for you… lots of stuff depends on it in your system
no its not

anyone?

yeah, i’m running equery depends now…

hey guys, links to libexpat.so.0 are broken everywhere in kde after an attempted emerge -uD world, revdep-rebuild wants to pull in over 300 packages and they are failing left. I keep seeing it coming back to kdelibs, which when I try to rebuild that requires qt-3.something, try to rebuild
that, and it fails going back to broken libexpat.so links…. I am at a loss here

what package contains the at command?

it’s used by a lot of things like postgres, subversion, pdf converters…

what is the exact error from qt

did you see the topic?

kinectio1, nothing about that config should result in a dual-head X server.

never mind….

most things accedentilly link to libexpat when they really don’t need to, due to something’s -config or .pc files -l’ing it, I don’t hit that as much as I use as-needed though

no I didn’t thanks!

at.. that made too much sense

well, a lot of things

I would assume it’s in base, but you can find out with equery.

well, when they don’t need it directly, they still need it indirectly

Does anyone know how to get zsh to work properly with emerge in regards to emerging versions prefixed by “=” ?

How do I get sshd to work w/ wlan0?

“=blah” doesnt work?

Futsuriai, works fine for me.

it tries to use eth0 all the time

What i’m trying to figurre out is _what_ stuff. repeating the “lots of stuff” concept, while true in a literal sense, is less than informative.

and eth0 isn’t connected

sshd binds to *

only wlan0

thats what qdepends is for

depends on what you use. subversion uses expat because a lot of its baaaaackend files are stored as XML

gee, thanks. did you ever hear a joke about a lawyer in a balloon?

[R]: AH, I see, so I will just have to wait for dhcpd to fail when starting it?

[R], Draconx, no, whenever I try to do it it says: zsh: whateverI-typed-after-equals not found

you want to know what dpeends on it… use qdepends… i’m not seeing where the problem is

but none of this requires a 2.0 version of expat….

[R]: escape it or quote it

tahts the initscripts… not sshd

Futsuriai, you need to quote or escape shell metacharacters.

if you dont have an eth0, get rid of hte init script

(looks like the current version of fontconfig doesn’t atleast though)

I’ve been awake too long. Getting incoherent. G’night.

[R]: I have an eth0

so mask it.

[R]: It just usually isn’t used

So mask =badversionofexpat and feel the burn when someday it’s _needed_

Draconx, ,d’oh, bash’s automatic handling of it made me go soft :p

Futsuriai, zsh also has a billion environment variables you can set or unset to control what sort of behaviour metacharacters have.

This is definitely more difficult than 2004.0 was

there is a setting in /etc/conf.d/rc about net devices and such… try changing it to differnet thigns

Draconx, thanks, though, damn silly mistakes, haha

[R]: OK

/var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/gtk+-2.10.13/work/gtk+-2.10.13/gtk/.libs/lt-gtk-query-immodules-2.0: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0: cannot open shared hosting object file: No such file or directory

heh, also it’s using libxml2 not expat, hmm

Drac I set mode 791 and get a blank screeen

/etc/ssh/sshd_config — You can probably do something with the listenaddress settings in there.

gtk+-2.10.13 refuses to use the new libexpat.so.1

did you read the topic?

xxentropyxx, does it work on the livecd?

yep

anyone have any idea of why my fonts get messed up when ever I launch something with wine? for example my task bar fonts get really small

it’s been using it for months here

unfortunately all gentoo wikis are down

try remerging pango possibly

TFKyle, already tried that

does pango build or fail as well?

[R], i already read the topic, and tried running the command mzbot specified

hmm……..now sshd is just freezin on me . I run it with start and it just hangs without sayin anything….

framebuffer support, vesafb, video mode selection support, and framebuffer console support all compiled into your kernel.

the secret dev wiki is probably up :P

Dracon…it’s all there….when I do vga=ask I can get modes but they are all shit

xxentropyxx, that’s because vga=ask shows you the VGA modes.

lol
but of course

any idea what’s wrong here?

woulde video=vesafb work then?
Also I am not running ramdisk…does that matter?

um how can i set audio in kde or X, i add the right support in kernel and build driver in, how can i set that audio will start working ?

does `ps aux | grep ssh[d]` show the daemon running?

hello, gentooers!

nope
hello Renich

oh that dammed udev blacklist file doesn’t friggen work

Hey, what was that command for updating gentoo up to date?

xxentropyxx, for some silly reason, vesafb uses the vga option for its mode selection. video=vesafb is a good idea, but not required unless you want to specify extra options.

(goes to google cache to read gentoo wikis)

Issue a stop and then a zap to /etc/init.d/sshd

hmm, yay for people breaking stuff
there are no ebuilds to satisfy “~kde-base/kworldwatch-3.5.7″. (dependency required by “kde-base/kdetoys-meta-3.5.7″ [ebuild])

stop comes up with not starte
d
How do I zap?
oh is zap a use

same way you stop, but with a zap

like start and stop?
ok

Run the “alsaconf” script (in the alsa-utils package) and “rc-update add alsasound default”

hmm
looks like i need genspslahsh
gensplash even

Now try starting again (we’re checking for restart cruft here).

still hangs

OK. Try undoing your last change and try again.

xxentropyxx, not unless you want console backgrounds and/or fancy full-screen graphics at boot.

what change?

yes that is what I am attempting to do
unfortunately without gentoo docs it’s a bit of a pita

xxentropyxx, well, you need to get the framebuffer console working at all, first.

You didn’t edit /etc/ssh/sshd.conf ?

shit
noob
just tried to start usin sshd

Can someone call up the devs and have them put the wikis on NT until they get their injection fixed?

language.

and haven’t edited the conf

xxentropyxx, there are plenty of docs on the framebuffer console included with the Linux sources.

sorry

If I want to set up hibernation are the suspend2-sources still recommended or can it be done with gentoo-sources?

any emerge –total-update command?

Draconx yes but ALL Gentoo shit is down because of hacks on the servers

gentoo doesn’t have a wiki, the gentoo docs are up.

emerge -DNuva world

Can I paraphrase that as “Some user wants you to give him access to a site, which is more important than fixing the major security bug”?

this is not a good week for gentoo

xxentropyxx, the documentation is still up…

join #gentoo-ops when you’re ready to respect #gentoo’s policies.

thanks ;

the conf file is blank. Never edited it.

nah, just that one box (or possibly a cluster) is down, www, forums, planet, sources, etc. are still up

blank?? There should be a default one in there.

I think aja meant /etc/ssh/sshd_config

ah

Heh. Thanks.

No worries

I made no changed
changes*

OK. What occurred between when it would start and it’s current state? Why were you restarting it?

I never restarted it

Gentoo is making some very naughty assumptions at boot time, primarily that my filesystems are ext2. They’re not, they’re ext3.

why don’t you just tell it they’re ext3

This being my first boot after install, I’m not surprised that errors occursed.

hmm, speaking of which I wonder if the sources for packages.g.o is freely available, probably not too hard to fix if I get the gist of that bug

occurred*
bob_, How do I do that?

nothing really, I Ctrl-C ed it when it was usin dhcp, and then it wouldn’t start
woops

Gentoo will only make those assumptions because you never edited your /etc/fstab when you installed ;o)

where is the assumption, in fstab or when root itself is mounted?

Um… thanks guys.
8 /
I’m so dumb.

And, in any case, an ext3 partition can be mounted as ext2. So that’s likely not the source of your problem.

suggestions?
reboot maybe….?

Nope, just inexperienced. A common condition, easily cured. :-)
Generally speaking, there are very few good reasons to reboot a linux system, and very very few problems that require it for resolution.

ok…

what about when it freezes or crashes?

I’ve used Ctrl-C before on sshd
but I never had that problem
but of course there was a reboot between them

usually the only times you need to reboot is when you change your kernel

aja, I’m going to assume that I have to mount the filesystem from the liveCD and edit fstab there because it’s saying, as root, that it’s a read-only fs

“Crashes” normally causes a boot anyway, and “freezes” usually only requires a restart of X.

yeah

usually, normally :p my box hasn’t stabilized yet, freezes every few hours.

Yes. Just mount and edit. SHouldn’t need to chroot again.

with sysrq keys, “crashes” don’t necessarily force a reboot

oh well
I gotta go
seeya guys

True. But people who encounter that are aware of the fact. :-)

Ricer CFLAGS? Unstable hardware?

don’t know yet. my experience is that linux boxes slowly get more stable the more you play with them.

my new Gentoo install is always forcing my monitor to run at 1280×1024@75Hz even though it’s supposed to run at 1440×900@60Hz. I am using an Integrated Intel card and I am trying to use the i810 drivers but they don’t seem to work
any ideas?

xorg.conf?

Edit xorg.conf ?

The more you know, the better configured your box will be, so yeah I suppose that’s true

nah, not from that…. it just sort of does. i’m not sure what is making this one unstable, its too new

aja: I have tried that, I tried changing the settings in there to the res that I want and such but it still won’t obey

please pastebin your xorg.conf

oh boy x.x
one sec

This is likely caused by X believing your hardware is incapably of handling the specified mode. CHeck your device and monitor sections.
Oh, and make sure you have the default color depth set correctly in the screen section.

how can i temporarily change the default alsa sound device
i know theres a command, and ill be damned if i can find it

ok, I am now aware of the the title, I followed hte instructions on mzbot and QT-3.3.8-r3 still fails because of libexpat

Why would a box fail to respond to “top”???
something is causing these processes to freeze up…

Historically, I’ve found random freezes/crashes to be bad memory. Only other case I’ve seen was a crappy NVidia PCI card whose driver killed the kernel if it got driven too hard.

I suspect it has something to do with the 8-port marvell sata driver

how do I upgrade my kernel using emerge?

A PSU can also bring about those same issues. I’ve found the 3.3v rail (which drives the memory) to be weak on a number of different “name brand” power supplies

use genkernel, not emerge for that.

You can’t. You use emerge to get kernel sources, then the tried and true method to compile and install it.

ok

i doubt that… this is a NAS with an embedded system i’ve replaced with gentoo. the hardware is odd and somewhat customized.

aja: http://pastebin.com/m10e321ef

i suspect that’s what’s involved. but there wouldn’t be a fundamental issue like the psu. memory is a possibility though.

The “odd and somewhat customized” would point me at drivers.

aja: I also have tried it without commenting out the last 3 lines

yes, in particular to the sata_mv/mv_sata driver

edit lines 379-389 to have your desired resolution before 1280×1024

genkernel is complaining about loop device support

it should default to the first one

modprobe loop

You could try changing the i/o scheduler mode in the kernel and/or use hdparm to put the drive in a lower performance mode and see if that has any effect. But that’s a stab in the dark.

FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.22.1-41.fc7/modules.dep: No such file or directory
did I tell you I’m chrooting from fedora?

can’t help you, beyond me.

ok

what would you suggest regarding the i/o scheduler mode?
i’m not even sure what i have that set for…

thanks anyway ;:

The kernel you are running does not have that particular module available.

that i’m running?
i think you men renich?

Renich: Sorry that was for Renich
Just a sec…

expat downgrading! yay!

downgrading?

back to the one that worked.

yeah, figured… but I need the network… and it doesn’t let me install madwifi because of the kernel ;=s
nor nvidia drivers

The new one works. Everything else doesn’t.

hah

IO Schedulers

yeah, make menuconfig is freezing….

any way of just downloading madwifi and deps using emerge?

This is a shout-out to all you Gentoo-ers out there who have helped me at some point in the past gettnig this Gentoo system set up and running. Thank you. There’s a beautiful world ahead.
s/gettnig/getting/

I keep getting update configs at the end of a emerge but im not sure what option i should pick under etc-update, its for file /etc/dispatch-conf.conf

theres a tool call dispatch-conf i think that you should use instead of etc-update
it remembers the changes you make, so if you brake something, it isnt a lost cause

Have you ever modified that file yourself?

no
i did a emerge –sync
an then got that

You probably want option ‘1′ which overwrites the old version with the latest version. And BelialMkII gave you good advice.

how do i go about using dispatch.conf
is there a site i can use

its a package

man dispatch-conf

Hi, I can’t seem to get gitweb to work with lighttpd, it keeps coming up with forbidden even if it was chmodded and everything, here is a thread i posted a few a week ago http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-455380-highlight-cgi+lighttpd.html any ideas how i can fix it?

…and the world goes on. ; )

ohh, its preinstalled

k

But seriously, thanks guys.

So what do i do, in etc-update to fix this problem first before i go on. Just hit 1?

or just exit and start dispatch-conf

any tools in linux to test the integrity of an hdd?
like check for bad sectors, etc

Tons. Starting with fsck

So do i merge this file?

i was afraid of that
but i’ll try fsck first

Exit. Then type dispatch-conf and press return.

Is there anywhere to check up on what the new kernel-sources differ in from the previous ones (for gentoo-source)?

i did
im looking at it right now

diff. You can also take a look at the ebuild and see what patchsets it pulls in.

thanks likewhoa

EvilDin_, 1) use modules and in kernel based alsa, 2) rebuild your kernel and setup alsa-utils, 3) nothing 3rd party is required to get intel HD audio to work

what about emerge –pretend?

no

rorachan, open a console and type alsamixer, what happens

lots of volumes pop up.

um what about if i have my driver build in kernel, not as module

rorachan, ok… unmute your card and check the volumes for Master and PCM

Unmute my card?

set as module

I’m installing gentoo x86 on an amd64 system, CHOST should be i686-pc-linux-gnu, yes? but should CFLAGS have -march=athlon64 or -march=athlon-xp?

Master is at 84 and PCM is at 100.

The X package is xorg-x11?

yes

likewhoa, bomb.com

EvilDin_, i’ve had much better results using modules… also note if you use the alsa provided by the kernel you should not install alsa-driver from portage or any other alsa driver packages

why, will it not work if i build in ?

If a sound module screws up you can simply rmmod it and re-insert it

EvilDin_, well it may work but udev and alsa-utils are also module loaders for the sound system

wrong CHOST it should be ~x86_64-pc-linux-gnu and your CFLAGS -march=athlon64

Hey

alsaconf prefers modules.. try it

rorachan, yeah same here… i find if you have arts, esd and gstreamer compiled in with use flags things dont work as well

how big is stage 3

yeah, different partitions on the same system

can I pipe lynx somehow to the console, standard output, so that it shows up in a script file?

Ac-town, http://distfiles.gentoo.org

ok that’s fine.
for the 64bit install, you’ll need to boot with the amd64 livecd and the x86 for the 32bit install.

I don’t have arts, esd or gstreamer in my make.conf USE.

I realise that.

I only just installed arts today.

And that was for Liquid Weather…which still won’t recognize PyQT.

http://rafb.net/p/VifEEF23.html
here is my prescotts detais

you gave me a good hint – I will check if this notebook’s dvd/cdrw is sata or not but since the hd is ide I think the whole arch is not sata

when they bought them… the boss had no idea they were 64bit
all 20 servers lol

ali3nx I can’t install postfix I get error dict_mysql.c:776: error: ‘HOST’ has no member named ‘name’ after make install

what did he say?: “Ok, our printing servers are gonna be just fine…. WHAT? 64 bit?? you gotta be kiddin’ me!”
use exim!
hehe

Renich, they were pretty happy hehe… none of the HP docs or box markings even mentioned it

can you paste your cpuinfo of that 3ghz proc ?

anyone know why mod_access.so is missing on a fresh apache install?

3 for me… 17 for various voip purposes
bosyak, hmmmm

boss: “ok, order another ton of RAM for those”

ask i #gentoo-apache

bosyak, which arch do you use and profile?

Hey

thanks

gentoo-wiki has this real nice postfix/postgres/amavis/courier-imap tut

Is there an simple emerge command to unmerge all the gnome stuff?

anybody got a clue why the wiki is down ?

but… the wiki is down =/
Jell-O-Fishi, http://rafb.net/p/2gxguC84.html
database server had a fatal error

ouch

interesting

what is postgres used in that combo ?
i want to implement imap here at work

kexman, i use that same setup on my mailserver
i added some content for the wiki in various sections

hey, howcan i have in gnome a tray icon for the printer while its working or has pending jobs?

from what I can tell, when you emerge something with -k, it bypasses all the gpg signing stuff. Is this true? I am looking for a good way to distribute binary only packages, but also have them be signed (using an internal rsync server and signing authority).

but what does postgres do ?
aaa postgres damn its db :P
dikk its morning
friday morning :P

works great… aslong as /var doesn;t run out of room since postgres is used for all the heuristics and the quarantines

cant one use mysql instead ?

there are no ebuilds to satisfy “~kde-base/kworldwatch-3.5.7″.
?
why is this ?

wait you keep your viruses in a database ?

use = instead of ~

so one could dos you by sending you alot of virused emails ? :P

kexman, sure but the sql syntax varies and it’s quite an involved process to modify then verify all the sql code

(shell) can somebody tell me how to recursively delete ONLY folders named .bill ?

I was emerge -fuD worlding

.

find /path/to/where/to/start -t D -delete or something like that

ok, thanks

wait, that was very lame from me… it’s not just that

This server thinks my BitchX client is a bot…..how do I change that?

it’s just a hint hehehe

entropy, irssi

I got it working. Instead of using KDE sound system, I selected mplayer.

I am actually looking the help page

irssi?

check a man… good!

entropy, bitchx hasn’t been updated since regan was in office ;p

Ok. I need some guidance on emerge.

Regan isn’t in office any more?
hmmm

How do I remove or unmerge everything gnome?
Reagan

entropy, and people still use bitchx?

have you tried doing a –sync again? Maybe you synced in the middle of something strange :-/

shocking

I’m using BX. Shocking eh…

I have but I will try agian

You could start with “emerge -Cva gnome” and “emerge –depclean -p”

IRSSI is console based?

Thx woot

well the last cvs commit for BX could likely be a candidate for a programming museam
entropy, yes
and much more recent than BX

find /path/to/where/to/start -type d -iname ‘bla*’ …. check the list and then just add -delete at the end

also removing the D might me a temporary workaround :-/ sometimes that goes a bit too deep and tries grabbing stuff that no longer exists etc

ali3 i am emerging it

Thanks
will try

can anyone point me to a howto or a guide for using an i810 card in gentoo and getting X to use proper screen resolutions and refresh rates? Or if not i810, whatever is appropriate for a Intel 82845G/GL card?

yeah I also was almost there thanks
but it says “directory is not empty”
how can I feed the find results into rm -rf ?

yes… there’s another way

Last time I was in IRC was about 12 years ago I think

really?

Alzeihmer’s is kickin in
lol

use -exec instad of delete… -excec rm -fr \{} \;

yep

be very careful!

12 years ago I didn’t own a computer

lol

it’s -exec not excec

ok – thanks!

gulp

1995? I suddenly feel very young.

12 years ago I was building wans and trying to convince companies to NOT use microsoft

um why do i have this problem while mounting ntfs file system with ntfs-g3 http://pastebin.com/m6959f3be

i had an elite 75mhz powerPC mac on dailup in 1993
9 gig hdd too

did you succeed?

negative
stupid people make stupid choices and choose stupid operating systems

ugh
that’s natural selection, I guess

lol

EvilDin_, mkdir /mnt/windows

When I go into a company I refuse to work for them unless they have at least one console sitting around where I can actually write some decent scripts
