im sorry, here it is http://dpaste.com/15851/

hehe

why fedora have for a poweruser so many packages in repo inc. third

Say what?

godu, i’ve got the exact same onboard sound, and it worked just fine before i switched to audigy. re-run system-config-soundcard and check that you haven’t plugged your speakers into the headphone jack or something

Okay, need some help… Just did a fresh install of Fedora 7, /boot is in /dev/sdc1. Linux is installed into one LVM over sda, sdb, and sdc2. After POST, get “Error Loading OS”. I’ve done th fdisk and made /dev/sdc1 the only active “boot” partition. I’m currently in the rescue shell.

there is no more “core” so whatever is in the Fedora repository is community supported

ok

You r BIOS is set up to boot off of whatever sdc is?

as far as I know…..

and what used to be third party “extras” is also part of the Fedora repository
make sure the partition type is set to Linux and not whatever it used to be

but fedora has too many packages for a power user the debian/ubuntu repos have lot more on board and mandriva and opensuse too

and that GRUB is properly installed

szec you around and have some time?

Fedora is for the power user and hobbyist market in many ways

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/Join

okay….. so how can i tell which SATA number sdc is?

he means what comes with Fedora.. not that it isn’t there

bpart1434 number of letter -1

so but fedora is very stable (f7)
this is why i like fedora

bpart1434 its 0 based so a is 0

a=0 b=1
and so on

but it seems i go switching against to another

thanks EvilBob

what are you after?
as in what packages?

son of a…. come on!!!
okay, so yes…. the bios is booting to the “proper” hard drive
otherwise I get a “DISK BOOT ERROR”

What does your /boot/grub/device.map file look like?

h/o
let me get into the rescue shell

bpat1434, i recommend you get familiar with the grub shell’s tab completion.
bpat1434, makes it very easy to figure out where grub thinks stuff lives

(hd0) /dev/sdc

bpat1434, /boot’s on one ‘em. try each one: root (hd[tab],0)
bpat1434, kernel /[TAB]

http://rafb.net/p/G4W02K79.html

bpat1434, why’s it missing the initrd line?

dunno
was configured by Fedora installer
I know for a fact that /boot is on /dev/sdc1
I also know that Grub was installed to the MBR of /dev/sdc

why not /dev/sda ?

Fedora defaulted to sdc… not sure why….
should I reinstall using sda?

no, just search for “fedoranews bob grub”

bpat1434, i told you to grub-install /dev/sda yesterday

then tell that process to install grub on sda

Yes, but the command isn’t found….

everyone hates my problem *cry*
hehe

http://fedoranews.org/contributors/bob_kashani/grub/

actually my problem sucks big time…

Yes, I ended up finding it… hd2,0 seems to be ext2

I don’t know what your problem is but if it makes you feel better I don’t hate the problem

so that seems it’s the /boot partition

EvilBob Got a new motherboard after having the old one’s SATA drive controller failed. Still having this absolute annoying error message about building this RocketRaid Drivers installing on my machine, when they seem to install fine on everyone elses. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=250549 contains the details if you forget

yeah see I just don’t care

when running isntall (hd2,0)/grub…. I get
file not found

why

frozty_sa2, because you need to reverse the polarity of /dev/null

;-)
I love doing that

bpat1434, did you even look at the link i sent you to

yes….

hey there Southern_Gentlem

read it

It won’t work for me. grub-install isn’t found

Hello!

bpat1434, log in to linux rescue as it say

Fantastic!! Dessert is here!!
which I’ve done

grub-install –recheck /dev/sda

/sbin/grub-install: line 326: rm: command not found

“command not found?” A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with “su –login” or “su -” in order to get root’s command PATH so the command WILL be found; don’t run “su” by itself. If it’s still not found, then either it’s not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not
executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you’ve spelled it incorrectly.

thats some highpoint software raid thing? talk to them… I would suggest you look at migrating to linux hosting software raid.

Finally able to get highpoint on the phone… they stated that any kernel above 2.6.20 is not compatible, because “the directory structure” has changed…

Can someone tell me why whenever I vnc into my server host gnome panel crashes

Well, did they say when they were going to fix it?

ivazquez within a week… which generally means, when we can figure it out someday, some year
ivazquez the initall kernel version installed with fedora is 19 right?

At least you managed to get *some* sort of answer from them, so they can’t be *that* awful…
2.6.21.

ivazquez yea, wonder why everyone else on here can compile it

any other ideas?

redhat is the same as fedora?

and why I was able to compile it once…

fedora is the precursor to redhat

To RHEL.

Fedora is the development branch for Red Hat?

stable development in Fedora is an inclusion candidate for RHEL

Hi all, when do I find where the kernel source directory is?

For?

I am trying to get my wifi card working
patch -p1 -i bcm43xx-injection-linux-2.6.20.patch
that is what I have to do

has anyone maybe done a rsync via ssh? like, tunnel the rsync through ssh

Where did you read that?

thats the default in recent rsync… or you can do ‘rsync -e ssh …’

rsync supports using ssh easily. See the man page.

at aircrack..

Do you perchance have a link?

http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=broadcom#patching_the_kernel

thanks ivazquez and nirik

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/CustomKernel

ok, so now that I got a solution, I have an idea… I could unplug my DVD player, and install the last drive on that port. When Highpoint fixes the issue, I can then move the last drive to the SATA add-on card, and plug in my drive… does this sound safe?

What kernel and arch do you need the module for?

*and plug in my DVD RW back into my mobo spot
2.6.22.1-41.fc7-i686
ivazquez arch?

is there a way to tell what arch the install media is?

EL5 is not free ?

wamty of course not

what version of rh is free?

none

fedora
centos

fedora and centos are red hat?

no

they are derived from it

lol

centos takes the rhel5 sprms and recompile the,

if you want redhat and do not want to pay .. you have fedora as a desktop option and centos as a server option

so centos=rhel5 -rh support

fedora is a redhat sponsored desktop os that with an rpm package management system

fedora is 2.7GB

ivazquez I even payed one of these guys to compile the source code… but they didnt send drivers that worked… I dont think they had the version I had… anyways I payed him, but he returned the money…

lol

I wouldnt

2.7 GB!

you’re point?

640K!

isnt that too much?
:/

your

warnty, you can buy a 20gb drive for like $10-$20

wamty, consider a dvd holds 4.7GB nopw

GreenJelly_Linux, where?

I think there’s a hole in the makefiles somewhere, but I haven’t found it yet…

GreenJelly_Linux, yeah, go with s/w raid. don’t be those guys’ plaything.

f_newton look for the sales

Actually, it’s 9GB+.

zcat I am using SW raid… just using that as a controller

yeah I do and I dont pay more then 10 dollars for used hard drives… new ones are around 40 on sale

fedora is 9GB?

fully loaded it probablyis

$0.20/GB. 500GB is the sweetspot.

depends on how you count it… for i386? for x86_64? for ppc? just binary rpms? source?

get two 150gb raptors and stripe them

zcat, yeah I suppose so, but right now all I need is this laptop. I have my server in storage
I am thinking about buying a bigger hdd for the laptop but havent found a sata drive thats bigger for a reasonable amount

zcat 500GB is were its at… I got a $20 drive from Compusa about a year ago on a sale

so what to get please?
what should I use?

GreenJelly_Linux, you probably ended up with some maxtor or western digital or even worse a fujitsu or something with no buffer
GreenJelly_Linux, you probably ended up with some maxtor or western digital or even worse a fujitsu or something with no buffer

wamty tell us what you are wanting to do

f_newton I buy seagate for the warrenty

I want to know which distro to use.. debian or fedora
and I’m still lost

f_newton I own about 10 of them

wamty what do you want to do with it

what do you mean?

warnty since your in a fedora forum… I would say… definately use fedora
bwarnty since your in a fedora forum… I would say… definately use fedora/b

I’m new to linux

what do you want to use the computer for

always i use FreeBSD and i want to try some linux distribution..

desktop or server or what

desktop

fedora

the easiest setup I have come accross is PCLinux

If you want similar then use Gentoo. If you want contrast use Fedora.

wamty, download the livecd
boot it up
play with it if you like what you see you can install from it

PCLinux doesnt have allot of options, so its very easy to setup, and you dont have to deal with learning all the weird programs like grub, etc..

ok sir

don’t like you haven’t been here many times .. c’mon

I think its amazing the wide variety of user types that fedora can satisfy

http://distrowatch.com

i think it’s amazing that no matter how many times to try to teach someone .. they still come back asking the same old questions

opsec, but how do I do it?

I have a 120 GB HDD and I was wondering what is the recommended partition sizes to make for /, /home, /swap, etc. Also, are there any other recommended partitions to make.

How much memory, what’s the machine for, etc. etc. etc…

opsec usually its because they are not asking the right question… its hard to ask the right question when you dont know what the question is

firebird619, unless you have special needs, give /home the most and keep your stuff there
firebird619, swap should be 3x memory, but it can’t be too big I think

ivazquez I forgot, Im not mirroring my root anymore…

i’m talking about people who have gotten matter-of-fact responses/answers to questions .. then they’re back the next/week/month asking the same thing

ivazquez that means I have an open sata port on my mobo…

3x is overkill nowadays.

1 GB RAM, I am a typical desktop user, browsing, e-mail, I like editing photos and so forth. I also like installing all different programs and trying them out.

firebird619, for / I have 10 G, for /home I have 56 G

ivazquez…. then I could just plug my entire raid array into my mobo!

100 /boot outside of LVM, 1GB swap, 15GB /, the rest for /home.
*100MB

firebird619, I don’t think / could ever use more than 10G… but then again I don’t install *everything*

i have a 120gb boot drive, /boot 500mb /swap 2gb /home 80gb and / the rest

also… don’t use LVM… its a personal hosting prejudice.

/dev/sda5 33G 4.5G 27G 15% /

heh

27gb free space

you guys are all slackers
you don’t WANT / to be big

but i could care less.. i have several 500gb drives in here

thats why you partition

quad xeon desktop

_NoX_, 10 G ain’t big

Ok, Thanks everyone. So it is best to have /home have the most space, right?

thats true _NoX_

no 10g isn’t bad, but it’s still overkill

firebird619, I think so, but opsec is the opposite

where on the file system is fdisk?

we use a 10g / on our prod builds, but it only fills if someone domes someting stupid

_NoX_, yeah, but with so much disk these days, who wants to risk hitting a nasty limit?

our typical useage is about 2gb

I have two Marshall 4×12 speaker cabs and a 300 W stereo poweramp
oh wrong channel

jimPy dont waste your money on speaker cables… hehe

Ok, thanks

just my speaker chords cost $100 bucks

jimPy — audio phile building a linux video server…

_NoX_, on a desktop you can certainly end up using more than 10GB. not talking about minimal servers.

jimPy, first off marshal speakers are high efficiency 4 or 2 ohm speakers
they are not designed for a home retail amplifier

my desktop box uses 313 meg in /

Ow. Why would you use those for consumer stuff?

I’m trying to get usb to detect my GNX4 workstation
8 ohm

f_newton you can buy the amps… they are NAD or others

and I hammer the poo pout of it all day

and most of them are 50watt \

_NoX_, or anal^Wminimalist users

at 4ohm I have 300W
8 ohm 200W

now, /usr, /var, /data are all huge

lol I have all the equipment I want

– use to own a pair of Thiels… ohh do I miss them

my stage amp cones are celestion greenbacks

– owns B&W’s now

my PA and foh cones are different

http://www.kroon.co.za/howto.php?howto=gnx4_linux

_NoX_, /usr usually is large

jimPy:

…but not on most desktops.

jimPy just make sure your resistance rating is supported by your amp… most high end A/V receivers are all 8 ohm’s… they use to sell 4 ohm fronts, but the BOSE world changed that… and now they only rate them at 8ohm… that is unless you buy a seperate amp, and/or go with a company like
NAD… ok… I guess Ive hijacked the channel enough Got to plug in these drives!

Most desktops don’t usually have a separate /usr.

This is the Crown xls 202

ivazquez, it depends on the person setting up the install
i know alot of admins that separate /usr /var /boot /opt etc

I do that for all my servers
/var especially can fill up in a hurry

yep
i separate my /boot /var/ home and my root stays around 4Gb

not for a desktop maybe, but on a mission critical server you dont want a file system to fill up and bring down your applications

On home machines I do the big 3. On corporate servers I do /usr and /var (or something under it) as well.

my guitar is my first Jackson with Fat frets, 3 emg double coil pickups. It plays like a Cadillac

jimPy, and thats fedora related how

lol Southern_Gentlem

Please take all off-topic discussion to #fedora-social .

I’m going to run all my crap on Fedora if I have to write the drivers myself

lol there’s a fedora social??

good

depending of the use, one would need a /opt, and a /srv

http://www.kroon.co.za/howto.php?howto=gnx4_linux

good luck jimPy

That’s true, there’s /srv now isn’t there…

sure. None of the machines I deal with use them, but you could if needed…

especially if you play with revisor

computing must have a purpose to be relevant

wow jimPy that was profound …….. lmao

whats a sports car without roads…
fedora is the sports car, what do you do with it?

actually, a fedora is a type of hat….

i install more fedoras in it and test respins

anyway… does anyone know of a good video editor for linux (that can do at least what windows movie maker does)

I better get out of the deep end…

along windows and centos

back to Python in a Nutshell…

there are some things in the ubuntustudio distro
you can check that out for some info

i wanna stick to fedora

Can I use udev to change eth1 to wlan0
I have a bcm43xx card, and my wifi shows up as eth1

but you can. just check ubuntustudio’s site to see what apps they put it

attunix, i don’t know what windows movie maker can do, but i’ve used kino in the past

I’ll try that
can i yum install cde ?
ive always wanted to try it

lol broadcom must be getting a great big laugh over this whole debaclde
uh less he d

you mean this cde: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Desktop_Environment ?
there are some patches/themes to make Xfce look like CDE.

yep. thats it

Question I have not got a chance to install Fedora Core 7 yet what you guys think of it so far?
or should I stay with fc6

doesn’t the hostname come from the /etc/hosts?

what’s the difference between 7 and 7.90?

f7 has a lot of progress but if your f6 works well wait a bit til all the kinks get ironed out

where do I reset the hostname?

f_newton, yes I was thinking that

i love fedora over ubuntu – better customization upon installatoi
*installation

I went to f7 because on the laptop Im now using f6 doesnt quite cut it
f7 loads up correctly and allows my wifi to work

Well I do work for the US Navy and they have started using Fedora

it does seem a bit uh…. skitzy though

What package should I install from Livna for my Radeon 9600 ATI card on F7 ?

skunkwerk, I imagine in no small part due to sonar_guy

f_newton out the box install fedora does work nicely

you should use the X11 Free driver afaik.

yes it does
and it gets better every version

f_newton, most likely

Anvil, using it atm, but couldn’t get twin head to work.

it is a sonar suite
i am speaking of

anyone? There’s Fedora 7 and 7.90, what’s the difference?

what’s the best equivalent of dreamweaver for linux?

well dont give anything away now

Anvil, Why not use the prop’ driver, if its nicly packaged by livna ?

have you tried system-config-display to enable the dual-heading ?
Your card may be too old for the fglrx to be supported.

probably bluefish Steffan

is there a way to change the timelimit on a network interface to timeout faster if there isn’t a connection?

it is too old
radeon or vesa are the choices

but I really dont know Steffan

i’ll take a look, f_newton

Anvil, fglrx (the ATI driver) supports my card an up.

another question, does fedora require extra respitories to be added like ubuntu when it’s first installed?

i had that card, it is not supported

it would help to install livna at rpm.livna.org
there are some other repos out there for exotic apps but you dont want them enabled beyond specific rpms

It was working fine with F6 and fglrx. ?

7.90 is F8t1.

what’s the best media play for fedora, that has widest variety of filenames, can play most things?

vlc

i see the one that’s on here default isn’t too good =/

VLC can play everything
can i install the CDE

“No matches found for VLC”

use Google

that is a configuration error on your part
vlc, xine and mplayer are in the livna repo
as is the gstreamer and other plugins/codecs you’ll need

can i install the CDE on my computer?

ok.

cde desktop?

why cde?

http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC

thanks

Because the 70s were FUN!

are you in love with solaris?

lol

not really; I just want to try it out
Linus used to used it

No, you don’t.

my hp-unix machines use cde

H(J

what?

if i had a choice i would convert them to fluxbox

no!

English.

yes

not fluxbox! :P
i hate it

do you really need to spam us?

yes

livna is a .rpm – the command for that is rpm filename.rpm?

cde is shit dude

what did he type in? i can only see little boxes with numbers

like he said… 70’s

watch ur language; grandmas could be watching :P
but it looks nice

Mmm yes indeed

always a damn dummy train in here.

please dont spam us

i think fluxbox looks nice if you know what your doing
im a command line junkie though i don’t need gui

how is heanyu spamming

i know about it

Hey guys I am on a dedicated server and i need to run netconfig to set up an IP address for the server. I get command not found: netconfig. Any suggestions?

“command not found?” A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with “su –login” or “su -” in order to get root’s command PATH so the command WILL be found; don’t run “su” by itself. If it’s still not found, then either it’s not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is
not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you’ve spelled it incorrectly.

i’ll look more into ion…

attunix, i wanted to make sure he wasnt spamming privately

i see

OpenBSD l0st.cocse.org 4.0 GENERIC#953 sparc64

thanks

ok I will turned to good sleep, it’s very late, Goodbye dear friends

uughh! ion looks horrid

hahha

Fedora doesn’t include CDE (I don’t even think it’s still being developed, and I don’t think it was open source). You can try Xfce and see if you can find a CDE like theme.

no way

ok
whats up with random usernames popping up?
4-line paste coming up just really quickly….
7 PM) skunkwerk: no
mikerose357 mindCrime
NicNac nirik
8 PM) attunix: nirik:
done.
is it just me or is it happening to everyone else too?

-_-

sry

it’s just you. Are you hitting tab?

I loged in as root does that make a diff?

attunix, the powers that be removed the registered nicks only to the channel

not really

is it back off now? last I looked spot re-enabled it…

The command netconfig isn’t used anymore.

walterwoj, login to irc as root, thanks we can now take over your machine
uwalterwoj, login to irc as root, thanks we can now take over your machine/u

ivazquez yes there is a package for it

I am using SSH, sorry no takovers for you

It’s just a link I think.

for networking?

I am IRCing on my windows box. and SSHing int the server

Read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt.

If netconfig isn’t used then what is?

still comes packaged on most BSD’s, and fc does have a package for it as well

system-config-network-tui

That is the command the server host sent me.

And it works… if you’re running an older version.

I need to add ANOTHER ip to my server. Not change the currentone.

Read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt.

Do i make a new device and add the IP?

Hey all.

nirik, i knew spot had reenabled it before i had came in -devel to start the conversation about the situation

yeah, it’s on now.

then warren came in here so i have no idea what he did

he added some ops… with the idea that if it was open more ops would be needed.

I didn’t do anything

ok
i had to leave at that point

That wont mess up the current IP will it?

i do have one augument to leave it

so we are back to registration required. I don’t know if we want to try with it off for a while? guess we need to catch spot when he’s around and ask his input…

no

did people come to a conclusion on that?
i really dont want to be in the middle of a war over it.

hey, speak of the spot.

I don’t have a problem running with it off for a while.

we can try it

no idea. I would think we could run with it off and see how bad it is? we can always turn it back on…

ok. i’ll take it off.

warren so what is the policy for domain bans–how long should they last

who has the power to toggle it? we should try and have coverage of someone who can re-enable it if it gets bad most anytime.

VileGent, I have no idea, I don’t do them.

warren, i dont want to do them but some spammers it very well could be required

several of us can. you’d need access level 25 or higher
me, warren, Jef, ivazquez

spot, and Anvil ?

yeah.

happy vacation ivazquez

Thanks.

ivazquez, as long as you come back bud

spot, for the registration stuff… how about this… how about for now… whoever turns it off… takes responsibility for turning it back on before they leave channel

domain bans are probably mine. Feel free to remove them.

That’s the plan…

lol

technically, i never leave the channel.

spot, well then
spot, you get to leave the lights on all the time if you want

so what’s the freenode incantation to find the level 25 people
in case reasoning with trolls doesn’t work

/msg chanserv ACCESS #fedora LIST
ok, got it right the first time.

whoa. quite the list. thanks.

good i know who to poke

can we make kanarip a level 20 and nirik

Can one build an x86 rpm on an x86_64 machine?

Yes. Use setarch and mock.

‘course you can.

What would I need to change to get it to work? It says the build failed.

Hey

Use setarch and mock.

Hmm. I shall look at them.

hmm, I don’t know about all that. Let me try something first…
oops, sorry, wrong tab

does anyone know of a good video editor for linux that can do basic effects?

pitivi?

thanks
anyone know of a place with free ogg videos?

RHM
Well, for a certain definition of “free”.
They’re under the CC, but some are NoDeriv I think.

ok

heres a dumb question. where do I go to tell gdm not to show a list of users at the login screen?

systemadmin.login screen

You have to pick a theme that doesn’t have a chooser.
There is no variant of FlyingHigh that doesn’t have one.

what is the preferred server for sending mail in fedora?

endeavormac depends on who you ask

i run kde, and using control center to fix up the login screen only works for kdm.

There is none, although sendmail is the default.

well alright then, thanks

hey guys… got to “assemble” my raid array… one drive states…. “Disk /dev/sdd doesn’t contain a valid partition table”… this is a raid 5 array with 4 drives….
hold on… Ill brb

if it’s only one drive, mark as failed, remove from raid array, add to raid array and mark as active

gdmsetup took care of it.

how do i import pictures into pitivi?

Where is the apache config normaly on fedora?

.. /etc

/etc/httpd/conf/

is it hidden? What is it’s name ( i’m used to windows )

httpd.conf

walterwoj your going to have to use vi to edit it

Don’t edit that file unless you need to.

there are also more conf files in conf.d/*
no he is not
no one EVER has to use vi
some may choose to but this is Linux, more than 1000 editors that are suitable

Ok, let me ecpalian what i am doing so you might know beeter what i am trying to accomplish.

evilbob true, but vio is most common

I am moving a deicated server from one machine t anither.

vi*

but vi is nice

vi sucks. vim is nice.

nano is much easier for most new users

how do i import pictures into pitivi?

Our server has fedora and plask, right now we are trying to get the DNS right but the servers can’ make up thier minds. afraid .org says the new server are taking over but my browser and ping have no caught up.

all the machines I have worked on for crop[s either use vi or nano
corps*

the domain is thailovelines.com. Any ideas?

fedora and plesk?
