_AxS_ ok i broke out after noticing even though it is not in my makeconf file — the libstdc-v3 is setting cflags
~~ lazy
did you try what i told you earlier?
ops, –noreplace is wrong , hold on
the -t?
Can’t someone tell me how to re-compile GTK? emerge gtk doesn’t work…
yeah
Keith-BlindUser: don’t you mean encode? that’s what my example does -
and there’s a lot of packages
emerge kdebase-startkde
should i remove them all?
and add more later
Keith-BlindUser: the idea is that arecord routes the mixer input into lame which encodes it to an MP3 on the fly.
when i try to run it with the opengl options, i get an error about the x11 driver not configured w/ opengl
only blockers
oh remove
x11-libs/gtk+
nvm, –noreplace was correct.
that’s almost every kde package
NGB5423, try emerge –oneshot cairo gtk+
thanks
thank you
i’ll do it
i notice a patter
*pattern
Keith-BlindUser: so you’ve got realtime recording capability without the overhead of an intermediate WAV.
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdesktop-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-3.5.7)
BUT, back to your current problem…. im dumbfounded as to why its trying to bring that in..
the 3.5* block 3,5,7
wll, should i try mask it?
it’s important to reach as many people as possible, which could be affected by this imho (and it’s not like I’d spam in a horrible disturbing way)
you could, but i think that would just cause emerge to b0rk differently.. is there anything else beryl-related that is installed right now?
Hi, could anyne help with netqmail setup?
how to configure a CUPS server to work?
There is web configuration
Keith-BlindUser: also, arecord can be told to stop after a certain number of seconds. if you use a static mp3 bitrate then you can determine how long is OK with some simple math based on your free disk space.
maybe the xgl ?
hey, mzbot’s on vacation?
I’m afraid so.
could be.. dunno.
Thanks.
how to configure that way?
I’ll test and if I get an audio file..I’ll send it your way. Heh
http://localhost:6000 isuppose
usually localhost:631 isnt it?
there you can add printers, classes, jobs …
Keith-BlindUser: ok. the most important thing to remember is twofold (1) always invoke arecord with “-f cd -t raw” at last (2) always specify “-” as the input file for lame (that means STDIN).
ah, sorry, yes
no wonder… kdebase is “monolith” ( builds all of kdebase), while kdesktop is “split” ( builds only a part of kdebase). It’s either “monolith” or “split”
Keith-BlindUser: of course, you might have to fiddle around with your mixer to get the right input etc
631
doesn’t work
Keith-BlindUser: er, least not last sorry
what error?
well, it’s still unrelated (imagine everybody coming in here to show us what their current concerns are and which website we should attend to support them)
what use flags?
This address is restricted
mahound: is there not a ‘kdebase-meta’ ?
when I am running X without a window manager (i.e. just a single program), how can I change the mouse cursor from the default “X”?
plus, i really don’t get the point of this whole thing
of course, there is…
..which is kdebase but split?
ah, perhaps you have not permitted apache. Is apache installed?
i think i have no cups use flag
did you emerge cups?
did you start cupsd?
sure
which is “all the split together”…
yes
paste output emerge -pv cups
probably
check /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and make sure the permissions are set properly in the config file (so that you can access that config webpage)
[ebuild R ] net-print/cups-1.2.10-r1 USE=”X dbus jpeg ldap nls pam php png samba ssl tiff -ppds -slp” 0 kB
yes, there is
ok, that seems to be good. Does apache work correctly on your box? some other apps?
how to check?
apache isnt needed for this tho…
have you ever used it for something else?
it seems you’re mixing monolitic and split ebuilds
i don’t even know how apache works
you are right, one can edi config directly, but the web interface is quit nice and simple
the web interface is hosted by cupsd, not by apache
ah, ok
I did not know
i will paste my cupsconf, ok? Will you look at it ?
i figgured s’ok
try ps aux | grep cups
thanks, firefox runs fine now.
0
0 grep –colour=auto
www.pastebin.ca please
ok kdebase-meta has no blockers
but it fails nbuilding
http://rafb.net/p/TQUHvL20.html
and if you connect to: http://localhost:631/ do you get anything?
“you need to install kdelibs first.”
do what it says. “emerge kdelibs”.
404 Not Found
…is there a kdelibs-meta ?
but it’s already installed, chalex20
emerge -p –depclean and see if that wants to clean up a bunch of kde stuff, clean it up and try again
No, just “kdelibs”
tnx
ok
That should get pulled in as a dependency, when other KDE things are merged.
which would make sense to me, hoewver he still seems to be having an issue with this… is it cruft from a monolithic ebuild?
or some serious issue with the database itself…
..hope not..
I didn’t do monolithic, but I have kdelibs. It’s in my world file, so I’m going to corect that, I think.
could You share your cupsconf with me ?
cupsd.conf
i dont have access to one right now, but just edit what’s there and read about the access permissions (listen, port, etc)
wait, I will check your
be sure to run /etc/init.d/cupsd restart so that your changes take effect
ok, piko
YOu have KDE?
yes i do
_Ax
what is the package for the administration tools of gnome?
oops
my machine is running on gcc-4.1.2, but sun-jre-bin wants to use gcc-3.3.6… it won’t ever finish building gcc 3, can these two coexist?
ok, thanks
yes
I use cups within the KDE print system. I’ve never had to mess with its conf file.
yes they can
what did i do wrong?
i’m wondering about that dependency myself — why does a binary package want gcc-3?
i just tried to emerge java
what’s the command to start a cups?
libstdc++-v3 is needed
sun’s java tries to for the plugin
That can co-exist. It’s c++ support that is pulling it in.
/etc/init.d/cupsd restart
sun java host and other closed source stuff needs gcc 3.3 libs
so either you install a full gcc or libstdc++
so should i emerge another package first?
ahh.. and you need to build libstdc++ with gcc-3
libstdc++-v3
but it seems that your config is ok, just do you have a firewall?
no
it crashes everytime… i didn’t make any wierd changes
could you paste /var/log/cups/error_log
anyone here know how to supress output from the ntop program in the initlization of ntop on boot ?
you don’t
oh?
http://rafb.net/p/TEjzrd57.html
the ebuild wants virtual/libstdc++-v3, which is either gcc-v3.* or libstdc++-v3 itself
…iirc, when i attempt to emerge it was bringing in both
there are some errors
Hm, lookie that, its not doing it now..
how to fix them?
try emerging libstdc++-v3 and then emerge sun-jre-bin
hi all, the “ls” command doesnot list the contents of my cd drive
ok/.. will do
..is it mounted?
I think a single (unrepeated line is okay) – however let’s don’t discuss on this, if you stand on the point it’s wrong in here, so let it be – I won’t post it again. Just for your information: Microsoft applies with his OOXML (Office Open XML) to become a ISO standard. The thing is, that a)
there already is standard (called Open Document Format ODF), b) that it dosen’t support other ISO standards c) that it has some undocumented
specifications, etc. etc.
yes
i know the full story
you can see it from a File Manager?
okay
yes
“ls” works for others directories?
yes
hmm…
…does your user have the correct permissions?
(not that i think that should be an issue)
how did you mount it?
maybe you mounted the partition with only root privilegies
ok, first try to set Loglevel to debug
automatically mounts
as proposed in the log
define ‘automatically mounts’ ?
how?
some file managers do not actually mount the drive to browse its contents
the point is, why would anyone try to prevent MS from handing it’s own creating over to the guys defining the standards?
i am sure it is mounted
cat /proc/mounts — do you see it in there?
yes
can you paste the line for it?
(just the one for your cdrom)
you’ve a list of reasons why on the page
040Disc iso9660
edit by hand /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
and what should i change there?
there set LogLevel info
sorry, no info, but debug
then /etc/init.d/cupsd restart
…huh? was that it? you should have something like: /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro 0 0
_AxS_, hello
hey, how goes the battle?
:/dev/hdd /media/My40Disc iso9660 ro,nosuid,nodev,noatime 0 0
_AxS_, gentoo its a bit to win
_AxS_, wanna look error log ?
=x
X errors or what?
….so you cd /media/My[tabcomplete] and you can’t ‘ls’ ?
cd /media/cdrom
right there it says it is mounted to /media/My\ Disc
not media/cdrom
_AxS_, emerge error
then try to visit localhost:631
=x
sure –
it fails to explain why this decision should be influenced by a web site, rather than being made by the people in the affected organizations, which – if all the claims you make are true (they probably are) – will never happen…
ok
i think there is not such option
_AxS_ ok, i broke out after noticing.. even though it is not in my make.conf file — the libstdc++-v3 is setting cflags to -02 -march x86_64 -pipe… mine isn’t a x86_64 build. i even use 0s for the optimizer… so is there a way to set cflags on the cmd line?
and that’s the last comment on this, back on /topic please (feel free to pm if you want to discuss it further)
ok, try my cupsd.conf
i found
cause libstdc++ crashed too
http://rafb.net/p/eVn2wx92.html
AxS_ that worked thanks a lot
yes there is.. but umm.. if this is not what’s in your make.conf then where is it being set?
pvt =x
theres is the erro
look
i am not sure
_AxS_, i was a dumb, and make de CFlags wrong =x
but now, when im compiling nvidia drivers i look for this, then i change the cflags and trying to do emerge -e world
but the system crash 2 times
How about pastebin, so more than just one person can help?
i just know i saw it setting those cflags
what are your cflags now?
_AxS_, safe cflags
a minute
the cflags are -march=k8 -02 -pipe -sse3
the paste he gave is here: http://rafb.net/p/GzrLai91.html
so if the filename contains a space, i should use “\”
DrChandra, i dont paste on channel to dont be kicked , a lot of lines =x
still not working
ok thats good.. your chost? it has never changed right?
emerge -p –depclean doesn’t work
if u wanna i send ^^
nopz
right now i checked.. they are -0s -march=athlon64 -msse3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer
_AxS_, checking the make.conf…
“Have you forgotten to run `emerge –update –newuse –deep world` prior to
depclean?”
ok.. and what was the ebuild using?
-o2 -march=x86_64 -pipe
i think building a 64-bit v ersion will break the system
_AxS_, make.conf on pvt
are you i686 or amd64?
i686
looks good
_AxS_, i tried to run revdep-rebuild
when you emerge -e world, where does it fail?
but aways they say to run
you have unresolved dependencies, that means you still have packages you’d have to remove prior to updating KDE
system stop
and when dont stop
shows the messages that are on your pvt
_AxS_, the messages are normal ?
how do i do that?
emerge -auvDN world, paste the output somewhere
trying to do emerge -e world again =x
paste error-log
again?
hello
let’s see what is happenning, otherwise, try mine config
mahound, yeapo
_AxS_:so is there a way to force other cflags?
hmm.. ok this might be part of the problem.. you see, march=athlon64 means ‘gcc should build 64bit extensions’.. you might want to change that flag to a 32bit equivalent chipset then try again
mahound, im trying the emerge -e all day
but i just came from an emerge -e
http://rafb.net/p/at36HT59.html
march=x86_64 is a more generic version of your march
mahound, excuse?
I made an emerge -e
ok, it just keeps rolling 1,000 errors on not a GCC extension .. or bad type conversion
this time when it fails, let us know what it fails on. Also, use emerge –resume to restart it instead of emerge -e
kde got stupid
_AxS_, TY
XMetal was talking about his/her own problems, not yours
mahound, and what happened?
ishino, ty
eventually fails… but when it built gcc 4.1.2 it went no problem
ueoahuoeahuoea
but maybe i can help
dev-java/jdom-1.0_beta9-r2 , its f*ked
does not install
Any way to run xterm with “medium” fonts?
anayone else has this problem
oh, i see
confusion
i see something
_AxS_, but this messages to run revdep-rebuild are normal ? something to me be careful
sure — you can change the global Xterm settings file or make your own (i think ~/.xterm)
hey guys can i get some help with making a link
ok, then perhaps this is somewhere in your /etc/hosts or /etc/conf.d/hostname
when you’re doing emerge -e, yes you can just ignore that because you are emerging _everything_ again
mahound != Mahmoud
then you can configure
sorry
i will try
^^^
np
ah yeap = P
don’t ask to ask, just put your problem on the table
only remember set the LogLevel back and restart or your log file will grow up quickly
anyone have trouble with com_err on ~amd64 linking to lib64 ?
XMetal is coming across a problem that looks like that..
are you ~amd64?
_AxS_, yeap
..you know that ~arch is testing and not supported right?
_AxS_, turion64×2 TL-56 1808mhz
I can ./configure && make manually but not thru emerge
konquerer not handling “
_AxS_, no ! o.O
why?
_AxS_, what can i do ?
you probably want to have ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=”amd64″ in make.conf
i have o.O
unfortunately, this probably also means reinstalling
look on pvt
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=”~amd64″
_AxS_, is that what i need ?
no, you have ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=”~amd64″ — the ~ is bad.
ah yeap
unless you know what you’re doing.
~ = testing, unstable, not supported
i put this to compile wifi
you should probably have used /etc/portage/package.keywords to just put it on the wifi packages.
yeap
i know
but i dont remember
when you did your emerge -e world, did you compile host gcc and glibc already?
omg, im a dunk =x
_AxS_, look
thats the steps
Hey
_AxS_, im trying all sunday use the gtk+ installer and scrpits installer that comes on lcd
_AxS_, nothign works
_AxS_, so i decided to do manually instalation
I have a grub boot problem with my gentoo, I get error 17 after stage 1.5
did emerge -e world compile gcc and glibc yet?
_AxS_, i think no
why ?
just run the command now, looks good to me
because you might be safe
compiling linux headers
Could anyone advise please how to change hostname?
ok
_AxS_, and if compile ?
thanks, ishino
you’ll get KDE 3.5.7 along with a bazillion of other packages
switch ACCEPT_KEYWORDS back to “amd64″ and then emerge -e world again
thanks, i fanagled the libc and kept trying and it wnet through… sun is building so thanks again
my boot partition is /dev/sda7, i use a hardware raid 0
i’ll tell you if it works in 2 days
after this whole thing is done, try emerge –depclean again
_AxS_, im yet doing this
_AxS_, iim running on lcd now
and use a chroot to make my inslation
and consider to update your system more often
if it hasn’t touched gcc/glibc your computer might save itself. if it has, then… …probably need to format and reinstall again (from the stage3)
but if u wanna know if the gcc and glibc was compiled with ~ , thats isnt compiled
omg
_AxS_, and, how can i know this
?
can the probleme be that my boot partition is too far form the /dev/sda1
but you say it hasn’t, so that’s good.
_AxS_, i think that isnt
cause
with grub, that shouldn’t matter
when i do emerge -e world
never pass from 40 package
of 300
look
you might be ok.
grub-install report lot of error message but generate the right file
try it, its worth a shot.
_AxS_, the problem is if the gcc and glibc are compiled with ~amd or the wrong cflags?
do it by hand. run ‘grub’, type ‘root (hd0,6)’ type ’setup (hd0)’ type ‘quit’
both — mainly ~amd though.. you can upgrade from amd64 to ~amd64, but it is very hard (often impossible) to downgrade from ~amd64 to amd64
omg
hadr to me
or hard do pc ?
=x
Ok well i have two hard drives one is an 80 gig that i have my install on and a 500 to put my samba share and home directory on so how do i link my hda3/home to sda3/home and the same thing with the samba share
well, depends. do you want a home dir on both or just on one?
_AxS_, no i want my home directory symlinked i just need the commands
any way to run xterm with “medium” fonts?
I’m just tired of control+right clicking, and then selecting “medium”
mount –bind would be better i think, if you can’t just mount it directly
well, thanks for everythink guys
so, is there any command line argument that if I pass to xterm, it runs in medium? rather than “default”
see you later
i did that, i just looked grub.conf i see that i forgot to replace root=/dev/hda1 by /dev/sda7
dislo, you mount the new ‘to be home’ on a temporary mount point and copy the old home data over, then you mount the new home over the top of the old one
kernel /boot/gentoo-2007-30-07-2007 root=/dev/sda3
can that be the problem ?
you can specify the font xterm uses via its config file. man xterm, should have info there
what is the actual problem?
you can’t boot, or you can’t get grub to load?
after Loading stage 1.5 i get error 5
any idea what font it selects for “medium” ?
ahh, grub load problem. what is your ‘root ‘ line in grub.conf?
emerge (or run) xfontsel
iirc, its ‘fixed’
I already have it
the default is fixed
root (hd0,6)
grub doc: 5 : Partition table invalid or corrupt
Shire, Partition table invalid or corrupt
right, so set the font to fixed-medium
what kind of raid is this?
Raid 0
what documentation can i read to make changes to an ebuild and try to emerge it manually (from local/disk) ?
you can’t have grub on a raid0
HW? SW?
pretty positibe of that
(ve)
Shire, kernel or fakeraid ?
hardware
SO, he can
what hardware?
NeddySeagoon, _AxS_ can i just say mount /dev/sda/home /home and put something like that into my fstab
SEAGATE on GIGABYTE motherboard
not quite. you can mount /dev/sda /mnt/sdadrive, and then mount –bind /dev/sdadrive/home /home though.
_AxS_, just to ask, where are u from ?
=x
dislo, no … for lots of reasons … you may only have one /home
that’s biosraid, its not hardware raid
canada
ty
and you can specify both of those mount points in fstab if you want
_AxS_ sda1 might be better
yes bios raid, i did the configuration via bios
hehe, oops.
Does the RAID hardware provide BIOS compatibility, or is the mobo designed to be able to boot from the RAID?
you cannot use grub on top of raid0 biosraid.
Shire, how did you install grub ?
yes i boot on the raid, i have Win XP on the first partition and it work
grub does not understand dmraid raid0
i see one drive of 2x the size of one disk
_AxS_ The BIOS shoud haid the raid from grub
is /dev/sda7 actually raided?
i partitionned my disk with fdisk
yes
Shire, how did you install grub ?
biosraid isn’t real though.. its like promise, highpoint, etc. etc..
emerge grub-static
What category would a LD_PRELOADable library that manipulates applications’ view of the filesystem go into? sys-libs doesn’t seem quite right, but neither does much else.
linux can figgure it out but it needs dm loaded first
_AxS_ yes … grub asks the BIOS for a block … the BIOS sorts out the mess
u_AxS_ yes … grub asks the BIOS for a block … the BIOS sorts out the mess/u
NeddySeagoon, _AxS_, why cant i just do ln /mnt/sdadrive /home
Maybe search google for “grub” and your RAID hardware.
i would say all my disk is raided, i created /dev/sda2 3 and 7 of type ext3
Shire, … the commands to install grub on your MBR
your /ev/sda1, has two directories in it right? home and sambastuff ?
i did root(hd0,6) setup (hd0)
Shire not /dev/sda … I hope … It should have been /dev/mapper/…
hold on… are you sure you’re raided? it sounds like you build the fs on just one drive
_AxS_, yes
Shire, That fails for BIOS raid
Shire (hd0) is one of the underlying drives, not your raid
i have /dev/sda ans /dev/sdb and /dev/sda1 to 7
ok. _if_ you had what you want for /home on one partition, and what you want for /sambastuff on a second partition, then you could just mount the partition to /home (etc) and be done.
but, because you didn’t, you need to mount it someplace else, and then you can mount –bind the home dir to /home (and mount –bind the sambastuff dir to /wherever)
Shire, pastebin your fdisk -l please
what is /dev/mapper ?
Shire, The way linux host sees fakeraid
my cups is still dead
Shire, you must boot with the option dodmraid before you install
i will upload it on my webserver it is hard for me to pastebin with lynx
Shire, ok
i need to reinstall ?
if you want your linux to be raid0′d yes
Shire I don’t know yet …
ok i will upload brb
..well maybe..
(the bios might be smart enough to raid0 the partitions from sda……?)
_AxS_, if he didn’t ude dodmraid, gentoo will not hove brough up the fakeraid at all. … thats a mess
use*
i agree
i know a lot of these biosraids will make a raid1 from existing partitions, but i have no idea if it will raid0 one or not
Hi pekster|wifi I got your message – thanks very much
_AxS_ Nope – they cannot – raid0 is striped
but either way, /boot can’t sit on a biosraid raid0 as far as i am aware
_AxS_, so i can have my sda drive at /mnt/foo and then mount –bind /mnt/foo/home /home
yep
how to configure CUPS?
and you can do this in fstab
_AxS_ It can – grub uses the BIOS to access the raid but it needs some special magic to installl it
np, and thanks again for your help. 3 RS-232 access
pekster|wifi glad it works
www.cyber-developpement.com/fdisk-l
Oh really? that would be nice… i’ll have to read up on that. i’m getting away with it here because i use raid1 — i figgured that was just because each drive has a complete filesystem
_AxS_, how would that look in the fstab
sec
www.cyber-developpement.com/fdisk-l
/dev/sda1 /mnt/sdadrive [fstype] [options] 0 0
/mnt/sdadrive/home /home none bind 0 0
/mnt/sdadrive/other /other none bind 0 0
…sec
I know this might not be covered here but I am having problems building kde4 – in particular strigi 0.5.1
your /dev/sdb is completely blank.
I am just wondering if anyone else has been successful and what USE flags they used
_AxS_, thanks for the help
np
yes i see …
Shire, thats not a fakeraid partition table … it should describe 620Gb and it doesnt
yes
on Win it display 620 gb
_AxS_ Thats OK for fakeraid0 … the one table covers both drives
ah ok
but now i can’t boot on it, i don’t know if i have lost the data on the NTFS partition
got a recovery disk?
Shire, one sec … let me check the arithmentic
yes with fdisk i have created partition assuming it was 620 gb
does the 2007.0 livecd even support dmraid?
why this is called fakeraid ?
because it is — it is entirely driver (software) driven
this bios raid is software driven ?
_AxS_, 30/333 and still compilling =x
Shire, its fakeraid because it looks and behaves like hardware raid but its BIOS software raid
yep. code in the bios for that funky raid controller screen, windows drivers, and dmraid (linux drivers)
that is why i need a Win xp cd with special driver in it
yes
Shire, did you install from the liveCD ? Which one ?
ok ..
i thought that was hardware raid so it was trasnparent ofr the os
i installed form the last livecd
2007.0
no it isn’t unfortunately.. what it _does_ do is allows you to configure the raid outside of the OS.. and it’ll let you raid0 drives with both windows and linux on them..
Shire, with the GUI or command line ?
hello
command line
and if you did a raid1, you can restore the raid onto a new drive from within the bios (instead of booting and having to do it in the OS)
i followed the manual
Shire, good – the GUI does not do dmraid … how did you start the boot process ?
i pressed enter, i did not use any option
I am having a problem
we’re here to help
how can I update my mysql to change ‘Quelques mots d”introduction et de présentation’ to ‘Quelques mots d”introduction et de présentation’
all accent aren’t working fine
Shire let me check in vmware … one sec
try booting it again with ‘gentoo dodmraid’
you’ll have to play with your encoding and locale settings
What is the command for showing all the use flags and descriptions for a single package?
hardware raid are managed by the OS ?
for more info, try #mysql, #gentoo-db, or the mysql hosting website
encoding of pages is set to iso-8859-1 I tried to force it with AddDefaultCharset On and AddDefaultCharset iso-8859-1
but it didn’t helped
hardware raid are managed by the controller card directly, actually.. you have various methods of gaining access to the card’s features
is your xterm set to UTF-8 though?
xterm ?
Without any special driver i have to tell the OS to do a raid with my disks after i have installed it ?
whatever you’re running ‘mysql’ in, or whatever you’re using to access the database
you can’t tell it to do anything unless you have that driver — hence why you need to boot with ‘dodmraid’ so it loads dm, etc..
I run it thru php services and on the local mysql server
in the make.conf in the CFLAGS, is it ok if i use -march=k6-2? becuase the make.con.exmaple says some warning about using it
Hey. I’m trying to get direct rendering working for my ATI Radeon9800 graphics card, but neither the fglrx driver nor the xorg-ati driver seems to work. I have no /dev/agp, could this be why direct rendering is being disabled when X starts?
is your terminal on the local mysql server set to iso-8859-1, and is php set to iso-8859-1?
(and apache too for that matter)
if they are not there now
ok, i try to understand wich type of raid is called hardware and which one is software
bios raid like mine is called software raid ?
hardware raid costs $500+
Shire You must make a kernel with dmraid support
that’s an easy way to know.
how can I found out about the terminal ?
lol ok
Shire BIOS raid is one type of software raid. Kernel raid is another
ok
Shire, Hardware raid is normally on a plug in card and always hides all the separate drives
i tery gentoo dodmraid options brb
ok
ok i understand
in the make.conf in the CFLAGS, is it ok if i use -march=k6-2? becuase the make.con.exmaple says some warning about using it
got a problem my xorg-x11 config is allowing my monitor to only run at 85 mhz for a refresh and this is way above the 60 i want
unsure, unfortunately.. i haven’t played around with it much
dospro, yes its ok on late gcc-3 and 4 compiplers
thanks
you need to adjust your monitor’s settings in xorg.conf — play with the vert-refresh
Is there a howto for using the xorg-ati driver?
yep. sec
!google site:gentoo-wiki.com ati open source
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_DRI_with_ATi_Open-Source_Drivers
^^^
_AxS_, it has a range of 50 – 160 , is there a command to place in there to FORCE 60?
? ati faq
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml
yes, change it to 50-60
thanx _AxS_
hi all. I’m not sure about my install of qmail. it seems to have installed fine, i sent myself a test mail, it shows up in the logs somewhere (rather, the host i sent it from shows up), and … well… what’s it done with it now?
Any hints?
back
i have /dev/mapper
2 drivers with starting with dm have been loaded
inside of /dev/mapper, do you have a whole bunch of files? six-character-wierdos and then a number after them?
yes
Shire, but you didn’t before ?
how many? 8?
control and other files with numbers
Shire, thats your fakeraid
4 +control
i never noticed /deV/mapper
…ok, if there’s only 4 then you’re missing some.. your gentoo install didn’t write to fakeraid-controlled disk images
Shire Only 4 because you fdisked without dodmraid … so you installed on a single drive
control nvidia_afbccagd nvidia_afbccagd1 nvidia_afbccagd2 nvidia_afbccagd3
ok
Shire thats the volume and 3 partitions
/dev/mapper/nvidia_afbccagd is your raid0′d equivalent to /dev/sda
ok
how do i put manually the gentoo mirrors into make.conf?
ok i understand
GENTOO_MIRRORS=”http://xxxxxx.xxx.xxxx“?
add a line ‘GENTOO_MIRRORS=”[url-from-the-mirrors-page-on-the-website] [another-one] [another one]“
Shire, gentoo installed only on /dev/sda … It was probably harmless but you need to reinstall
is that possible to have one single rsync for all the ocmputers on a network so that I dont have to emerge –sync each computer individually? Or maybe a local rsync on wich local computers could rsync to…
so i must use [ and ]
ok
nono, that’s just to show ‘fill-in-your-value’
its just the url
the partion /dev/sda7 is out of range ?
ok, so i just separate them by spaces?
yep, and wrap the whole thing in double-quotes
Shire, It was never properly created
that is why i get an error with grub ?
i mount it and i copy files in it
The same for RSYN variable i suppose
SYNC*
Joker_-_: you can nfsmount /usr/portage if you want, or rsync -aP –delete mainserver:/usr/portage/ /usr/portage on all your other systems, or…
yep
Shire yes … but gentoo used only the part on sda, as dmraid was not loaded
i partitionned the disk like a 620 gb drive
which is why you’re getting a ‘partition table corrupt’ error
thanks NeddySeagoon and _AxS_
taking notes of that… “or…” ?
how do i configure grub ?
does this mirrors have to be ftp, http or any?
Shire you installed gentoo and grub onto a single drive but the BIOS tried to read grub from raid0
if you have access to a backup device, you can copy the install to that, then redo your partitions and reinstall on the /dev/mapper/nvidia_abfccagd drive
df
*nothing
whichever you want — wget is used to download the stuff, and it’ll access ftp or http (and others i think)
Shire, Be sure to make a kernel sthat supports dmraid – its not included by defualt
Joker_-_: just saying, there’s any number of ways you can share /usr/portage across your computers
if you use genkernel that’s fairly easy to do, as you just specify –dmraid as one of the options
in the mirrors i see some are rsync, are this for the SYNC variable?
yes
the SYNC one can only be rsync, i believe
and just mounting it would do the trick… but would require lots of connections trough one computer… I’d prefer it to work just like it does right now, but searching on my local server instead… would it be possible?
i can do it with make menuconfig ?
_AxS_, how do you start your ‘tail -f’ to read your syslog file? do u log in as root, sudo, or change the permisions on the message file?
Joker_-_: …? i don’t follow.. you want to share it from your local server, but you don’t want tpo share it from your local server?
is this ok?: SYNC=”rsync://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/“
…unsure, i didn’t actually set my SYNC (gasp!)
Actually i do fdisk /dev/mapper/nvidia_afb …
yep
i get bad things
what kind of bad things?
partition are wrong
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
this for the 3 partition
that happens
do you know what the partitions should be? (your original ones, before you installed linux)
i had one NTFS that i would like to keep
sec
_AxS_, cool
I wanna share it from my local server to my local “clients”, but not with a “nfsmout” wich require a connection that would be up all the time (mount). Instead, I’d want it to do just like it does right now (connection to the rsync server, check for update, updates, disconnect) but localy (on
my local server).
the firs tone one the drive
Joker_-_: OH, ok well you can just rsync the tree over, or you can set your local server to be the SYNC mirror in make.conf
I cannot unmask a package that has a missing keyword
and how to I set my server to listen for that type of requests?
before i use dodmraid option i had /dav/sda and fdisk /dev/sda list the first partition has NTFS
I just share the directory trough apache and thats it?
Joker_-_: personally i rsync my tree over: ‘rsync -aP –delete –exclude=”distfiles” –exclude=”metadata/cache” –exclude=”local” [server]:/usr/portage/ /usr/portage’ will do the trick, nothing special needed (except root ssh access)
hey, is it possible to do a dd and pipe it over SSH?
Joker_-_: no i think you need to share with rsync.
or somethign like that
and even after adding the keyword to package.keywords, it still doesn’t work
sure is
its slow tho
because it’s encrypted?
aight thx, Ill google for a howto on that!
yeah..
Joker_-_: np, gl
anyway to disable it?
can i recreate the first partition has NTFS with the parameters form the fdisk -l i put on my webserver
if you play with the config on the server and client side, yes
i’ve got a 20gb hd i want to get an image of, so i can convert it into a vmware server image
you can also learn ‘rsh’
rsh…?
you can if they are correct.
i must delete all the 4 partition and repartition ?
the predecessor to ssh, not encrypted
if not i lost my partition
ah, cool, thanks
?? dunno. probably, i guess. are you certain that the partition landed on a cylinder boundary before?
i don’t have gpart
I’d probably just use netcat.
could you give me a basic example of the command?
netcat?
…and can’t you partition from within your bios?
i created the nfts partition with Windows, Windows was displaying me only one drive of 640 gb
hi im having a little issue with a Creative Esoniq-1373 and alsa
the windows cd i used had driver for raid
anyone know what would cause
Error inserting snd_page_alloc (/lib/modules/2.6.20-gentoo-r8/alsa-driver/acore/snd-page-alloc.ko): Invalid module format
on one machine. dd if=/dev/whatever | netcat otherhost port; on the other, netcat -l -p port | dd of=/dev/whatever
it’s a lot more than that in dmesg but ya
that’s not secured at all, but it’ll give you much better performance over a LAN than ssh will.
with ssh it’s ‘dd if=/dev/hdx |gzip |ssh target -c “cat |gzip -d |dd of=/path/to/file.img”‘
any know a fix?
_AxS_ and nDuff thanks
why the cat? “gzip -cd” should work the same as “cat | gzip -d”.
ok, but what im saying is that windows doesn’t always partition on a boundary
with yours would i need to run one before the other?
I have tried following this page, but it doesn’t work
http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Dealing_with_masked_packages
so i don’t lose data?
so it could be that the partition table you’re looking at is what windows left you.
you’d want the listen one before the write one. There’s no risk of data loss; if you do it wrong, it just won’t work.
erm. the listen/write one before the read/send one.
k, thanks
emerge gnu-netcat, btw; it’s significantly better than the old/proprietary one.
(dunno bout proprietary, but certainly non-GNU)
if i have just downloaded the lastest portage image is it really necesary to run emerge –rsync?
if it is masked by missing keyword you have to add the keyword. specifically check the ebuild, if it has ‘-*’ then you must keyword it ‘-*’, or perhaps even overlay it (and hack the keywords) to get it to work.
what is it you are trying to emerge?
kdebase – kde4
it is about 2 days old, so it is up to you
jajajajajaja
i’ve got it
you should run emerge –metadata though
whay is that?
what will metadata do?
it is something emerge –sync does, it regenerates the cache and metadata info so emerge works
I tried earlier with kdelibs, but strigi wasn’t compiling, so I just thought that kdebase might have solved it
a ok, lets check
is there any other method to getting kd4 built
sec
as I also tried the guide on techbase, and that also failed

anyone know how to enable opengl w/ the x11 driver? nvidia chipset here
doesnt seem so.. dearch the forums and see if anyone has posted instructions.
you need to use ‘nvidia-drivers’ for your drivers
are you using ‘nvidia’ or ‘nv’ right now in your VIDEO_CARDS ?
nvidia
good, you’re mostly there.

!google site:gentoo-wiki.com nvidia drivers

^^^ that one
I might wait a few days, because the alpha release is scheduled
to come out soon, and hopefully that should compile nearly straight out of the box on gentoo
good luck.
thanks
btw, you should see if anyone has set up an overlay for this…
i need to configure glx?
probably.
read the guide, it should tell you all you need to do
ok im gone, food time
ive got whats in that guide done already, still no opengl
i’m with a problem.. i can’t emerge rlocate: Unable to find kernel sources at /usr/src/linux
i have to download the kernel sources ?
yes, emerge gentoo-sources
Anyone know why bacula doesn’t come with its proper bconsole program?
them a symlink will be create at /usr/src ?
only if it doesn’t exist
ok
when running ls -FGg /etc/make.profile i get ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0/ what will this be? a server or a desktop profile?
buoyancy, i wll try. Thaks
neither, that’s the plain 2007.0 profile.
so what happens with it? is it ok? or should i change it to a desktop profile? i mean, this installation is for normal use only
whats the problem here
http://phpfi.com/247372
it’s fine, it just means you don’t have some USE flags set by default that most desktop/server users will want
is it going to be a desktop system?
yes
ln -sf ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.profile
if leave it as is it just means you’ll need more USE flags in make.conf
ok
lets then continue editing the USE flags
hey im getting this error possibly on merging gnome-desktop (doing an update for some new use flags)
working on a fresh install with a friend, and GCONF wants to install ORBIT, but ORBIT is failing.. any ideas why?
c
here’s the error http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/28568/
i did mount /dev/mapper/nvidia_afbccagd3 /mnt/gentoo
anyone know a way to have a progress bar of some kind for gzip or bzip?
Can’t find a SQUASHFS superblock on dm-3
you must specify the filesystem type
the filesystem is set to Linux
i’m getting an error when i try to resume an emerge saying that the resume list contains packages that are no longer available to be emerged … what do i do?
try mount -t vfat /dev/mapper/nvidia_afbccagd3 /mnt/gentoo
(although i don’t know what you’re doing there)
does it say what packages it’s having a problem with?
google says it’s fake raid… did you forget mkfs? mke2fs /dev/mapper/nvidia_afbccagd3
can anyone give me a quick verbal tutorial on use flags
i’ve read the handbook
and am just too stupid to understsand it i guess
first “emerge ufed”
is this USE variable very decisive?
that will help you
or i can add sometihng later
its for nsplugin so java applets work in firefox
ok it emerged
hi anyone here who knows if I can change the vcore on a P4 via software=
?
sorry, for nsplugin ufed isn’t the best way
that’s ok any help is appreciated
/etc/portage/package.use
i’ve tried teh manual and i’ve gotten all my video, network.etc… to work, just java applets in mozila, sound, and pidgin problems
ok one sec
replace category/package with the name of the package
ok did that
oh lol
what category is java in?
e.g. dev-java/sun-jre-bin
ok
i got that back when i entered it
rxdeath, always ‘emege -vp packge’ first and check what use flags the package responds to. Then check http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml for a description of what the flags do
anyone having a ebuild for wxWidgets/wxGTK SVN?
when i run locale-gen i get this: No locales found. why is this?
you need to edit /etc/locale.gen
either set the flag system wide or just for that package, IMO its better to have a small number of system wide flags and do everything per package
i did that nad its just the alsa flag i saw
i have already edited it
ops
i missed to delete the #s
lets correct it
bah
/etc/portage/package.use
don’t forget the “”
yes i did
what do you see when you do: cat /etc/portage/package.use
cat / etc/portage/package.use
whoops lol
hmm don’t think it works here
ok i get 4 lines should i pm it or pastebin or something
dev-java/sun-jre-bin nsplugin
wgetpaste
yes the last line says that
i’ll look that up drchandra
and emerge -pv showed “-nsplugin”?
just installed fglrx. ran a gui as root, saw that it was working, etc. logged in as a user, went to see if it was still working, libGL error: failed to open DRM: Operation not permitted. what permissions could I have missed that would cause this?
[ebuild R ] dev-java/sun-jre-bin-1.6.0.01-r1 USE=”X alsa nsplugin*” 0 kB
that’s fine, go ahead and emerge -auDNv world
hmmm that seems like a command i should have run long ago for some reason
maybe so
do you have DRI section like this? http://rafb.net/p/cPz5VP98.html
ok its doing its business
anyone know why a fresh install would fail while running autoconf?
here is something to entertain
www.bigcubes.com/morning.mpg
that was me a couple months ago, this way at least you know i’m not a total retard
i didn’t think you were a retard
holy crap that’s fast, rxdeath
i’ve never solved one of those things
How do I tell if fetchmail is pulling in e-mails?
haha thanks
that was alright but my record is 14.55
no dice
emerge 5/255 lol
bah 255 is nothing
ah ok
damn these chip nuts are addicting
it seemed li eka lot to me
it was worth a try. the fact that it works as root mean it’s a permissions issue.
dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed (/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
it is quite a lot, if this isn’t a fresh install
it seems you haven’t updated for a while
YeTr2, you can’t use AIGLX with fglrx.
Hi
I don’t have aiglx thou
YeTr2, sure you do, all versions of X.org that are in portage have it.
Is it normal that hald-addon-hid-ups takes almost 400mb of VSZ ?
yeah its resonably fresh
I thought that was disabled by USE=”-aiglx”
i got pissed at windows one day and said i wouldn’t use the computeru ntil gentoo was on it
it works perfectly fine if run as root
i installed gentoox on my xbox a couple years ago but this is way more hardcore
i love how fast everything runs in gentoo but damn its a bitch to set up, at least the first time
YeTr2, I am not sure what that USE flag controlled (it was only on xorg-server-1.1.x), but it didn’t control the presense or absense of AIGLX.
YeTr2, however, AIGLX errors are not usually fatal, they merely result in disabling AIGLX.
!seen Zoo-
Zoo- (n=opera@adsl-75-23-69-54.dsl.peoril.sbcglobal.net) was last seen parting #gentoo 5 hours, 21 minutes ago stating ‘{}’
I’m getting used to installing gentoo servers and workstations
thats hardcore
i’m going to be like that eventually
I’m trying to get across that if run as root, fglrx works fine, I get all the 3d acceleration I could ever shake a stick at. If I log into X as a regular user, it dies and mesa takes over.
it becomes almost fun eventually
i’m giong to just keep uninstalling and reinstalling until i can do it
yeah, profit is fun
YeTr2, I doubt that particular message is indicative of any problem in that regard.
Kinda like the cube?
there is onily one problem with gentoo that i think they should fix the kernel would take like 5 years to compile on a p2 or p1 that you use for serving audio or http if they made a pre compiled i386 kernel i could install it on p2 or p3
YeTr2, if that message really bothers you, you may explicitly disable AIGLX in xorg.conf.
lol yeah
twas the only (EE) in Xorg.0.log
i hope its easier than the cube
or at least less time consuming
actually i’ve only installed gentoo on desktops
i’ve been doing that for like 3 years
and I’m still clueless as to why as a normal user, I cannot use fglrx, but root can
it runs so beautifully though
so fast, everything is a noticable improvment over windows
nn-rand-wifi: Kernel shouldn’t take that long on a P1…
seeing beryl run for the first time on new hardware makes me feel proud
except user friendlyness
lol
hell yeah
hey guys how do i add a user to a group
but i said i wanted to dive in ass deep and everyone said gentoo
though gentoo needs an easy way to update multiple cvs packages
To disable AIGLX, add `Option “AIGLX” “off”` in the ServerFlags section of the xorg.conf file
i am giong to do beryl soon
after i get some little things out of the way
farrioth but on a low mem cpu it will kill your hd form swaping first !
i have a good graphics card
nn-rand-wifi: Should be fine with anything 64MB
oh well debian is more of a binary system so I guess i will stick with it for p1 and p2 32M RAM Systems
ok I have a Broadcom wireless adapter… and apparently it shows up in lspci… which driver must I chose for wpa_supplicant?
nn-rand-wifi: I use slackware in these cases
wext?
barque, yes.
ok
nn-rand-wifi: I second Nuitari on slack.
nn-rand-wifi: Or gentoo+distcc.
still no 3d accel for poor user..
i’ve usually found ndiswrapper the best for broadcom
does anyone know how to make kde follow the policy i put in place under /etc/hal/fdi/policy???
ok how on earth do I use wpa_supplicant?
i need kde to mount a volume for ntfs-3g and pass on the force option
It wants a config file and http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Wireless_Configuration_and_Startup said nothing about it
i automatically
i got it to work for gnome
I also have Wifi-radar
but i had to use the gnome configuration tool
the config file itself is well documented: /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
and it is giving a segment fault
but i can’t use gnome because gnome-settings-daemon refuses to work more than once over nx
and i cant get xfce4 to work over nx either
in the latest version it got moved to /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
there is no such file
oh
i am pretty frustrated about now
assuming you have emerged wpa_supplicant, you can find example config file in /usr/share/man/man5/wpa_supplicant.conf.5.bz2
ok /etc/wpa_supplicant looks as if I need to know exactly which AP I’m going to use
that is NOT the case
then you only need to added modules=( “wpa_supplicant” ) to /etc/conf.d/net
I want to look for one, and use an open one
why not use NetworkManager?
… I do something silly and extremely stupid… gpasswd -a user root.. 3d acceleration works. I don’t consider this an acceptable solution.
I emerged wifi radar too
danielbw, is that pretty much the same as NetworkManager?
wpa_supplicant comes with wpa_gui. it can be used to scan and associate with arbitrary aps
I got my install upto where I can log into the big full screen terminal(no gui) so I emerged xorg-x11, gnome, and gdm how ever when I reboot I still don’t get a gui. What did I miss?
correction, it seems that wpa_gui did not come with wpa_supplicant in gentoo
hiu rc-update add xdm default
rc-update add xdm default
yeah
it must be a throwback to my debian days
wpa_gui is here
That was cool, you both answered at the same time.
modify /etc/rc.conf and make sure it loads gdm for gui
wpa_gui exists!!
so all I need to do is run wpa_gui?
interesting… cant find it on my machine, but good for you!
bring up a shell and type wpa_gui
so, does anyone know how to get kde using hal to mount an ntfs-3g volume and maing kde use the force option
sigh 22/225
this is going to be a while
s/maing/making
umm… do I still need to worry about wpa_supplicant.conf ?
or should wpa_gui do the job?
it depends i’ve only used it once im afraid
here is the policy I created!
http://rafb.net/p/2IjXFD54.html
and wpa_gui says cannot get status from wpa_supplicant
can anyone tell y why kde is not going by my policy?
So I’ve finished my install and I rebooted only to find that grub is not a happy camper. Upon rebooting all I get is a screen that repeatedly prints the word GRUB. Any suggestions?
ugh, keyboard is sticking
i think the reason why i don’t have it is cause i don’t have the right use flags, but im already emerging something so icant play with it right now
danielbw, was that at me?
that maybe because it cannot read the control interface
are you root?
I ran it as a regular user
in root it doesn’t find the display
no, i need help with kde and halt and ntfs-3g
What do you have on wpa_supplicant? Just the network sections?
or if someone can help me figure out why i cant log on to gnome more than once using nx
network sections?
hmm, that’s a classic one
both drop downs are empty in wpa_gui
if that’s what you’re asking
i dont need help with halt, i meant hal
have you tried running with sudo, it think that might preserve your env vars…
no, I meant the /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf file
Let me check my laptop one
I did try with sudo
Add the following to your wpa_supplicant.conf file
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wpa
ok 1 sec
set the group to the value of the group
jmbsvicetto, I’m pretty sure the install is all good except for the bootloader. I rebooted using the minimal CD hoping that I could install lilo instead but it wont let me mount the hda partitions that I know are already there.
I meant about the grub grub grub ….
Let me try to find the grub faq link
value of the group?
which group?
my system is working under UTF-8 and etc…. but chars like “áãõé” are not working on gnome-terminal
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/grub-error-guide.xml
jmbsvicetto, Thanks I’ll take a look
chjunior, make sure your locale is correct when gnome-terminal is started, and that it is set to the correct character encoding (in a menu somewhere?)
You need to use a group to control wpa_supplicant. If you want, create the wpa group
is it possible to have a gentoo/ubuntu combo? so i could use emerge and also use the packages in apt-get?
ahh addgroup wpa?
you’re kidding, right? no.
section 7 – change the detection of disks in BIOS
yes
ok, i have to go, ill talk to you guys later
Then add yourself to the group and don’t forget to relogin
you can install portage on ubuntu, but it would not play nice with apt-get
Draconx, I set it in Termina/Set Character Encoding, but after exit the configuration come back to de default
You mean a gentoo/ubuntu?
chjunior, well, iirc gnome-terminal decides the default encoding from your locale.
ok
1 sec
i just like them both, would be nice if i could get them both to work
i like emerge more tho…
Draconx, http://paste.milk-it.net/433
but apt-get does have its usefulness… for shit i don’t care to compile just want to take a look at it…
chjunior, that affects what locales are installed, not what locale you are using.
chjunior, try the “locale” command.
Then you’re after gentoo with some sort of binary package mirror
Draconx, http://paste.milk-it.net/434
well yes i suppose but specificly the ones from ubuntu they have imo the best package system only 2nd to emerge
chjunior, well, there you go – the POSIX locale is definitely not a UTF-8 one. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/utf-8.xml for details on fixing that.
check /etc/env.d/02locale, /etc/conf.d/keymaps and gnome config
is it possible to start X as a single user? like autologin but without all this GDM stuff?
kant, yes.
you could install ubuntu in a virtual vmware machine
rofl
wtf
how?
i just want it to autologin as a user into fluxbox.. no interface login.. just directly to fluxbox
jmbsvicetto, Draconx http://paste.milk-it.net/435
kant, well, you could configure init to start an X session automatically in /etc/inittab.
does anyone know if there are any ubuntu like packages for gentoo
can it be done as another user instead of root?
ok brb
perhaps something out there i can settle with
look at /etc/conf.d/keymaps
kant, sure, root can become other users at will. su might be helpful.
whats better. to compile alsa as a module or as part of the kernel?
chjunior, that utf-8 guide covers configuring your locale.
Module.
how would i do this? i know how su works.. but i would have to startx and fluxbox..
gentoooo?
dospro, most of the gentoo scripts assume that alsa is configured as modules, so I would suggest that.
Draconx, was the LANG variable changed to someother file?
Make su call startx as a user.
so how would i start fluxbox then?
kant, same way you normally start fluxbox — by running it.
ok
I created group wpa and added myself to it
also i never can start X as a normal user..
You can define the locales in /etc/env.d/02locale
As you would normally.
I created the group wpa and added myself to it… what was that line again that you wanted me to add to wpa_supplicant.conf ?
http://rafb.net/p/eKYbt784.html – for an example of the vars you can use there
kant, well, you should solve the problem of starting X before you try to solve the problem of making it start automatically.
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wpa
well it starts if i use root.. but the startx command doesnt work as a regular user
kant, what doesn’t work about it?
What sh? Is it by any chance tcsh?
must I add it whitin network={ }
?
no, that’s a complete line in the beginning of the file
ok
You might also want to add “ap_scan=1″
next line?
yes
or previous
done!
normal bash
jmbsvicetto, gnome-terminal still starting in a different locale
now fire up wpa_gui ?
I’m almost sure you can configure the locale in gnome like you do in kde
yes
jmbsvicetto, maybe…. wait
same old same old
Can you elaborate the issue a bit more?
!google locale configure gnome
http://www.gnome.org/~lcolitti/gnome-startup/analysis/
Did you restart the interface?
I also get this error in the console, PING failed – trying to reconnect
ifconfig eth1 down?
ifconfig eth1 up?
!google gnome locales
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/freedesktop/2005-August/000142.html
/etc/init.d/net.eth1 restart
Does wpa_cli work?
!google gnome-terminal locales
http://www.mail-archive.com/desktop-devel-list@gnome.org/msg09709.html
could not connect to wpa_supplicant – re-trying
You might also want to try #gentoo-desktop
What about wpa_cli?
could not connect to wpa_supplicant – re-trying
it ran
err things just got interesting… ifconfig eth1 up SIOCIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
I should probably try ndiswrapper no
What card, driver and what are you trying to do?
?
Broadcom43something
and lspci shows it
hmm, bcm4300 ?
give me 1 minute, I’ll give you exact name
BCM4318
Can you use it without wpa?
No such file or directory
Maybe the driver’s crap and I need ndiswrapper?
I don’t know the status of the bcm43XX
Have you been able to find any clues on Google? Anyway, can you use the card without wpa?
well I can understand DRI not working with my graphics chip… but COME ON! it’s wifi!
umm haven’t googled up yet
sound drivers are better as modules or in the kernel?
as modules – imho
I think Broadcom is pretty good
Aircrack was praising it
Ok apparently people are using ndiswrapper for Broadcom
what’s wrong wiht bcm43xx?
s/wiht/with/
who said it was eth1?
He’s trying to make it work with wpa_supplicant
good point. barque: ifconfig -a ?
well eth0 is the one for my wired network
I’m using it right now to talk to you people
and ifconfig -a shows only 1 other eth interface
so? maybe it’s called wifi0, or eth2, or….
Look at the MAC of the other interface. Is it the same size of eth0?
yeah it is
ok, then it isn’t eth1394
Hi
I can just try ndiswrapper
apparently people had luck with it
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-547687.html
Hello all
I am stuck huge on trying to install gentoo minimal install live cd
can anyone plez, plez connect to my box and bail me out?
yeah
well, wait, what are you trying to do
I’m trying to configure kernel and puling my har out literally. lol
where are you having problems
haha
lol
alright man
thanks
im not going to connect to your box and do it for you though
ummm I am tryin to follow the manual online using links
what errors are you getting exactly? or what is going on
that’s kew;l
Can you connect and tell me what to do?
it would be easier if you just explain it to me
even if you dont know what your talking about
okay
hahahaah
Okay, I created the initial primary partition
ok
and thats it?
then, it says to create another partition ans this is where I get lost
no
ah
ok
haha
lol
i guess im just impatient waiting for replies
but
after that….it’s says to create a swap partitio
yeah
no problem..
alright, so i take it that you made a boot partition?
I just appreciate you even listening to all of this mumbo jumbo.
lol
ok, so tell where you have problem
he doesnt understand more than one partition
anyways….it keeps telling me that I need to delete the partion before I can create a new onw
one
we do know what manual says, so now tell us where you have lost
because you made the initial partition too large, the whole disk even
just explaining to Elfeater as well
oh
delete the partition you made
yeh…the swap was like for 512mb or something like that
shoot
so you have no partitions, we’ll start from there
I am on a seperate pc right now cuz the one I am installing on has no OS at the moment
If I have the internet working should I be able to ssh?
ssh to box from the pc?
Anyone here using an IPMI_SI?
yeah, you should, if you have ssh access set up, im not sure if the livecd has it by defaily
hrrrrmmmm
default***
terrible typo
gotta start sshd, /etc/init.d/openssh start
no prob
Don’t ask people to connect to your box remotely. You don’t know them and can’t trust most people. And Gentoo doesn’t want to get held responsible.
sshd start sorry
which is why i declined
no prob and thanks for the advice!!
Appreciated.
The bcm4318 doesn’t work with wpa_supplicant
Would you be able to hold one sec while I enable ssh?
yeah
cla has just informed me about it
for sure
even when using ndiswrapper?
You’ll also need to set the password for root as it’s scrambled
without ndiswrapper
*because* of ndiswrapper
ok there’s the driver and there’s the windows driver
there’s bcm43xx and the other one …
hmm, wpa_supplicant can also run in windows, right?
okay I am bacvk
I can tell wpa_supplicant, to use ndiswrapper or bcm43xx or something
right
Nobody?
ok. I thought I was confused
ok I’m confused… please explain!
ndiswrapper don’t allow such features
desn’t*
check your PM’s
and what about the Linux driver bcm43xx?
erm, never use it, so can not tell you
are you here? will you please pm me if convenient
you can tell wpa_supplicant to use the ndiswrapper module
