i was in here a couple hours ago asking how to send a bunch of files over netcat someone also mentioned that i
LSD`, should be… yup using amd64… does the livecd have to be 64?
Synx-Laptop: I’m not sure, possiblyt
oops, sorry about the garbage chars.
Synx-Laptop: yes, it does.
its set to mobile pentium III should be mobile pentium IV
damn it oh well ill get the minimal install cd really quick thanks!
I don’t think that that would cause any errors but, nonetheless, it would be wise to change it.
for sure….
are you seeing errors that look like this: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-462861-highlight-.html?sid=da31cea4afd9071fb346f5999bda693d
I know you get the same dmesg errors, but do you the same messages when restarting alsasound ?
yes
Did you run alsa-conf more than once?
Hey, how do I found out what package gnome-volume-control is in?
i have ran alsaconf probably several HUNDRED times haha
equery belongs
I don’t know, but I’m fairly certain that it’s in gnome-media.
I assumed you were asking because you didn’t have it.
and what package is equery in?
I’m asking because I’m having a problem with it
so I wanted to check what use flags it takes
gentoolkit
oh, then equery (gentoolkit) or qfile (portage-utils) would tell you.
for example: qfile $(which gnome-volume-control)
but i dont know what your getting at, that thread does not offer any solutions
you were right, its in gnome-media, and it doesn’t have any helpful use flags
ah but it does…it tells me that alsaconf is writing some list of modules somewhere which is getting loaded up when the service is run…i was just googling to find out what it was doing
did you find anything interesting in the kernel config?
My alsaconf/alsamixer work fine for finding my sound card, but the gnome volume applet says it “No volume control Gstreamer plugins and/or devices found”
this is so weird, running windows xp inside gentoo linux
alright, thats what i was figuring really, but i checked all the conf files i could find for alsa and came up with nothing
I had to restart the entire live cd etc.. it crashed on me
and that was weird
starting the live installer
the only thing I can think of is to check that gst-plugins-base is installed (and that the alsa flag was set).
the gentoo linux installer, in GTK
You do have pci ide dma enabled in the config…and are using the PIIX ide driver. Ok it could be that the PIIX is not the correct ide driver for your system…can you pastebin the output of lspci please
lol, The “Advanced” mode is for people who want to play around with more settings. If you break your install in this mode, don’t come crying to us.
can anyone remember the name of the package that lets a non-root user program access files inside an ext2 filesystem image file w/o actually mounting it?
I think I will go wit the standard install
you can use a loop device to mount the image…is that what you mean?
Is there any secure linux web hosting utility that will allow me to copy a files from one folder to another that have been created on a certain ‘day’
sounds like the fun mode
no … needs to be doable w/o being root … mounting is not enoughed … I need to create device nodes inside that filesystem
I know I could do it with UML, but that seems overkill
http://rafb.net/p/ua3wSp60.html
hee
why wouldn’t cdrecord -scanbus show my cd burner?
I can still use it and burn with it, even though it doesn’t show up in there
well, second time.. installing gentoo, was working with debian since sarge 2005, on up to 2007, but really I’m tired of all the dam dependency issues, and the community support. they are rude to me alot, so I stopped going there, and I spent 8+ hours compiling compiz-fusion into etch, and
then I couldn’t even get pygtk2.10 configure even after I configured some others to get it working
are the dependency issues just a matter of figuring out what all is needed, or is it more a case of something needed you can’t find?
I did configure pygobject, like it was requesting for pygtk, however.. still didn’t work
it would be nice if packages never depended on other packages, then … oh wait … no it wouldn’t because that would make everything all bloated
the partition I had for debian, I erased.. today
oh crap.. my ntfs partition got erased!
its not set in stoned yet is it?
isn’t that the natural destiny of NTFS?
odd the PIIXn is the correct ide driver for your box
I did recommended layout, and set it on a partition that I created.. 32 gb, and it looks like it erased all my partitions ! _
hmmm… that is odd… what else could it be?
depends on how you partitioned it … deleting other partitions is not hard to do
yea, thats what i should of done, argh
what’s the difference between than $() construct and backticks?
I exited, so maybe it didn’t format it
it’s not working
I mean, deleting them when you wanted to keep them
hey Skapare , want to help me with a gentoo latest install?
ah crap!
my ntfs, is gone!
well … not really … I’m prepping for my own
I can get it back wit software, but oh well
think I’m going to play with mandriva corporate desktop 4..
}3
except in my case I’m wrapping it all in a script that will do a cross compile install under qemu
help me pleas!!!
tim eto reboot system, to see if it deleted it
emerge –info please
Wheres a good base to start at for use flags, the make.default has basically nothing in it
in your config “# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_FORCED is not set” and this url: http://tuxmobil.org/ibm_r50e_linux_hard_disk_speed.html says that this should be set and also to disable the CONFIG_IDE_GENERIC option. See if that
helps
umm weren’t you on this channel sometime earlier with a similar compilation problem with another program? umm am just asking to see if these problems are related to hardware i.e. memory
indeed
is your system overclocked for example?
no
but the another program it’s a bug
i take a patch in bugzilla
ah ok. just wanted to rule out hardware
i think it’s not a hardware problem
are you running ~x86 or ~amd64 system or a stable one?
I’m following the xorg guide on gentoo.org, and have a problem
stable one
It says putting DefaultDepth in the Screen section, and Modes in the Display subsection, should change X’s resolution. It doesn’t
for example i compiled mplayer without problem
DRI module not loaded
are you in the process of emerging world when this happens?
no
So how do I fix that error and how do I set a resolution?
i must emerge world ?
can you try emerge linux-headers and then retry the iproute emerge
ok
no was asking to find out if linux-headers was emergered or not
tch…emerged
Anyone?
what resolution are you trying to make it use?
Any, but it won’t change
no
thanks, its working now
The resolution it uses is… 2049×1538???
Regardless of what I set in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
great
i dodo
bye
would anyone please take a look at my gyachi-1.0.5 build errors output and see if you know why it is not compiliing properly please? http://rafb.net/p/uLtvm759.html
Which LiveCD/platform do I select for Intel Core Duo?
(64-bit)
core or core 2
core 2
amd64
6600
amd64?! really?
yep, Intel licenced it
ok, thx guys!
Core Duo is AMD64?
What about Xeon?
it made sense. They could have spent millions making their own 64 bit extensions or consumerising IA64 and then try and make OS vendors support it or licence an established prodduct for less
I wish there was some info somewhere on which platforms for which chips…
….like on the gentoo doc/install pages.
Core 1 Duo is 32 bit. All Intel CPUs claiming to suppport EM64T or 64 bit (including Xeons) are amd64 compatible
If that guy bardamu does come back, this link is the only thing I found which matches his problem: http://www.lovebaby.biz/article.php?uid=1&itemid=2 it says he needs to emerge linux-headers and then do a “emerge -uvh
world” before this issue will resolve. Pass it on when he comes online again
anyone able to take a look at my build output and see if there is any info?
/time
Yeah, amd64 – makes sense.
sort of
So can anyone help me set the resolution Xorg uses?
I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf like the guide says, but it won’t use any resolution other than 2048×1536
Do you know the hsync and vsync of your display?
I don’t think it has one
Why do you say that, are you using an LCD?
Yeah
CRT is better
much better
What, is Linux incompatible with LCDs?
LCDs are lossy.
especially for me is better
i use many different resolutions
The refresh rates are usually much higher on CRTs also.
and quality
So how do I set the resolution?
Modes “777×777″ “666×666″ “555×555″
etc.
LCDs has a fixed geometry … anything else used is scan converted … anything with more pixels loses
Under subsection Display? I tried that
show /var/log/Xorg.0.log
3024 lines
grrrr
nopaste
wklej.org
rafb.net/paste ?
emerge wgetpaste ?
ANYTHING
just do it
I have wgetpaste, but only used it once and forget how to use it
omfg
man wgetpaste
No manpage
cat foo | wgetpaste
would anyone have any idea why ssh would stall when exiting ? for example log into my file server, do my thing, then type exit. on the client it takes a long time (minimum of several minutes) before returning me to the shell
Thanks xslr
Either wgetpaste is taking a long time, or it didn’t work
Is there a limit?
i dont have a wine windows/font directory i dont think
nvm yes i do
msttcorefonts
corefonts
That took long enough. http://rafb.net/p/ldYzkP63.html
hello
i need your help
how to disable the avahi lib
vesa driver
omfg
when i emerge the kde and gnome ,there is something wrong with that
don’t use monolithic kde
Yeah, someone here suggested vesa last night
see if you have a .bash_logout file on the remote host, and if you do, try getting rid of it.
what video card do you have?
Does it happen when sshing to any other computers?
this happens sometime
when i use ssh
I have a Radeon X1900, but I don’t know if that matters since I’m running it in a virtual machine
no, we need to know what the VM gives the OS.
How do I find that out?
lspci
Unknown device 1ab8:1131
That’s all I see there relating to video
vesa it is then.
What about setting a resolution?
It changes when I start X, but not to what I set in xorg.conf
what the hell is with use flags
every time i use them, keeping in mind that i spent an hour picking them out, every time i try to emerge something it complains about circular dependancy probs
you can only use resolutions that the vesa driver knows how to do….
wtf is that?
I’m sorry, but I laughed out loud at that
no mzbot? waaaaaaaaa
im glad i gave you amusement.
2048×1536? What else can it doo?
*do
if you have more than 10 USE flags, you probably didn’t pick the right profile. what’s your /etc/make.profile link point to?
anyone recommend a linux friendly bluetooth adapter for my desktop, or are they all good
anything ya know, normal. 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768
I disagree. mplayer can punt you up to 10 all by itself
i want to use the server profile for my new server
however, when i select it and then show it, i get this:
I tried 1024×768 and it didn’t work
/usr/portage/profiles//
what’s /var/log/Xorg.0.log say about it?
Where would it say it?
ok, that’s very wrong.
Bluetooth is quite well supported by the kernel
Skunky, pls give me the cmd to link to the 2007.0 apache geronimo server hosting profile
most devices should work
so any adapter, so the cheapest I can get
(chroot) livecd profiles # ln -snf /usr/portage/profiles/server /etc/make.profile/
eselect?
it’s just a symlink… ln -s /path/to/profile /etc/make.profile
i have like 30 use flags
all of the codecs, alsa, -kde, -qt4 -qt3, etc
you didn’t answer my question.
i pointed to desktop
Skunky, the trailing slash got me
and no, that path isn’t valid.
i think i got it now
eselect profile, no?
/usr/portage/profiles/server
that look ok?
the chipset may be somewhat important – have you checked http://www.holtmann.org/linux/bluetooth/features.html
yes
i was in here a couple hours ago asking how to send a bunch of files over netcat. someone also mentioned that i could pipe it through a compressor to make it faster. he said either bzip or gzip and he said not to use the other because it won’t work. does anyone know which way around it should
be?
but i formatted the laptop to start again
no.
nope, its just I am getting my phone and I want that bluetooth sync to work
there is no such directory named “server” in /usr/portage/profiles.
Scorpaen; foloow the actual links, for me its /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0
follow*
followed by /server or /desktop
sp/links/dir/
cat file | bzip -c | nc ?
friendly12345 that sounds right
“it wasn’t me”
friendly12345 what do you mean it’s not great
X seems to work fine, but it gives me a warning and an error
Failed to set up write-combining range (0xc0000000,0×1000000)
DRI module not loaded
Can I just ignore those, or are they a problem?
why wouldn’t cdrecord -scanbus show my cd burner?
I can still use it and burn with it, even though it doesn’t show up in there
IDE burner?
oh DAMN. i deleted my make.conf
its in a laptop
what’s a default make.conf for a pII Xeon?
-scanbus usually only lists scsi devices
Anyone?
is the ‘G’ in gentoo pronounced Gee or Jay?
jentoo
I say like in GENeration
thats what I’m trying, its not showing up in there
which is pronounced like jeneration :p
need to fix the EE ones
so like ‘Jentoo’ ?
it showed up in ubuntu and fedora, so I know what the scsibus id is, so I can still use it
yes
now what does Gentoo mean?
its just weird that it doesn’t show up
How do I fix it?
where does it come from?
a gentoo is a kind of penguin
My guess would be “Generation two”, but that doesn’t really make sense
that’s on the site, no?
Oh, gentoo’s in the dictionary
Skunky, i do not have an .bash_logout and it happens from any client, thats the only box that it happens on. and if i remember correctly, it did it on the last install ( i reinstalled when i upgraded the hard drive)
Gentoo \Gen*too”\ (j[e^]n*t[=oo]“), n.; pl. {Gentoos} (j[e^]n*t[=oo]z”). A penguin ({Pygosceles t[ae]niata}). [Falkland Is.] [Webster 1913 Suppl.]; gcide: Gentoo \Gen*too”\ (j[e^]n*t[=oo]“), n.; pl. {Gentoos}
gentoo is the fastest kind of pinguin out there
http://cougar.eb.com/soundc11/g/gentoo01.wav
ahh
dragonheart, why won’t my DRI module load?
gentoo wiki safe C flags
w/win 28
!google safe cflags site:gentoo-wiki.com
http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags
moo
i’ve had it happen before too, and other than having a .bash_logout with something in it, i’ve no ideas.
Skunky, does ssh do any dns reverse look ups on exit ?
not that i know of.
statement
is there anything in /etc/bash/bash_logout? you do know you can ~. to drop the ssh connection, right?
is there something like tomboy but not so gnome based?
there is no such thing as DRI for VESA
what’s tomboy?
a note taking tool..
vim
or that envelope on my desk :p
Skunky, just a default file /etc/bash/bash_logout with all comments
Skunky, so what do I do, just disable it?
Skunky, type ~. same as i would type exit ?
i am not alloud to run scripts,, do i need to add my user to a group?
eix -S note-taking return one other result besides tomboy – app-emacs/howm: note-taking tool on Emacs
octavarium, permissions on the script ?
*returned
friendly12345, i’m not a emacs user
dragonheart, yeah, but I commented it out the first time I got an error about it
permission denied
?
~. drops the ssh connection, like ^] quit does telnet
friendly12345, i tried xpad but it’s pretty ugly =/
yes, disable it.
How?
octavarium, what script are you trying to run ? sorry if i missed something, havent been reading all of the conversation here
ill give you the rafb link
Skunky, not familiar with telnet
http://rafb.net/p/NzqJDg98.html
hey… is it possible to limit gcc to a certain cpu usage?
mx-zoom: um. no. gcc will use all available cpu. you can set PORTAGE_NICENESS if you want things you’re emerging to stop slowing down everything else you’re doing…
octavarium, you need to run that as root ? where is the script file ? ls -l myscript ans paste please
mx-zoom, you emerging something and it takes all your cpu ?
yes
Skunky, how do I disable DRI?
you still around
i made the script in the user , not as root, and its at /home/myuser/cs/
you’ve been told, several times, comment it out of the config file.
mx-zoom, i emerge here with out a problem. i have been fine for a long time without messing with it. but recently i set it to 3, dont think i noticed much difference though.
I said I commented it out the first time I got an error about DRI
even when i try to run it with su, i get permission denied,, altho i can try again. brb
Some of the errors about DRI and such can also be mis configurations of your kernel modules.
something wierd started very recently. I emerged 2.6.21-r3 today and suddently when I was emerging something m system got slow as hell. I reverted to .20 and I still got the problem
obviously you didn’t… what file, exactly, are you editing and thinking you’re making changes in?
mx-zoom, and i still web browse and watch tv too. is fine. only problem now is the hard drive is full, thats slowing me down alot. (note, this is a p3 800, 512 ram)
how do I get x11 with only the drivers I actually need?
mx-zoom, disk full ?
I don’t won’t to build every driver available…
xorg.conf, # Load “dri”
set INPUT_DEVICES and VIDEO_CARDS in your make.conf
nope… 20G free
mx-zoom: how much swap free?
will paludis read make.conf?
octavarium, i have asked a few times for the permissions on the file. ls -l ?
oh im sorry
2gb free
dunno, try #paludis
-rw-r–r–
i need x
right?
mx-zoom, well, with newer kernels, i think the scheduling is different. (guessing, i am not a kernel person) what percentage of the drive is full ?
octavarium, yes. chmod u+x myscript
I’m trying to update xkeyboard-config but get http://rafb.net/p/hMDozE89.html
What’s the problem?
49%
mx-zoom, hmm, sorry, i am out of ideas then
u+x means user +execute?
Skunky?
mx-zoom: is there some random process showing up in top that’s eating all your cpu cycles?
:/. tks anyway mattmatteh
Do I need to comment DRI out of a file other than xorg.conf?
execute
Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)?
so do i replace u with the user name?
i810
no.
man chmod
it only happens when I ammerging something. so I guess it is portage. it happened before, high cpu usage. but it lowred when I started using other stuff. so everyting moved fine. now the fps decreases drastically
octavarium, no, all you have to replace is the file name (myscript) also, might want to take a look at the man page ? man chmod
mx-zoom: verify that you still have DRI enabled.
Do I need to comment DRI out of a file other than xorg.conf?
I’m trying to update xkeyboard-config but get http://rafb.net/p/hMDozE89.html . The problem seems to be with a parser but I have no idea how to fix it
you need to verify that you’re actually USING that xorg.conf file.
Changing other things in the file affects X, so yeah
dev-perl/XML-Parser needs to be emerged.
I am but I was just about to call it a night…whats up?
except that changing the resolution doesn’t, and commenting out DRI doesn’t, so I think you’re having problems beyond what we can fix. you need to read the logfile that’s generated and figure it out.
just wanted to let you know that i figured it out
Great! What was it?
Commenting out Load “dri” changed the “Screen not DRI capable” error to a “DRI module not loaded” error
so to keep bugging about the tar+netcat filetransfer. What could i do to find the bottle necks. Transfer is happening at around 300k from computer to computer, eventhough the computers sit right next to each other. Is this all hard disk access limitations and is there a way to speed them
up?
So something else is expecting DRI to be loaded, what is it?
me being really stupid evidently, i was not aware that /boot did not mount itself, so when i was copying over the kernels i was actually putting them in my home directory (on hdc3 not hdc1) so the kernel i was booting off was the same everytime……
Perfect, thanks
oh!
WTF are you using netcat for like that? you’re not supposed to transfer files like that! use scp, rcp, ftp…. or even sz/rz
haha, the only reason i found that out was i downloaded a new version of the kernel and compiled it and when i went to change grub.conf i found that it was not there
When I emerge world, does it emerge the packages from top to bottom?
ah well. At least it was a simple explanation
glad it worked out
it emerges the packages in the order it thinks they depend on each other in
yeah, for sure, that was probably why my nvidia drivers would not work for me either
Any way I can get that order?
emerge -p world
cause nvidiafb loads just fine now and i bet i could make the real nvidia drivers work as well
If I change my LINGUAS, what command do I need to run to re-emerge packages that support the new languages?
You can try runnning emerge -uDpv world
it’s thousands of small files, scp & co turn out to have more overhead than this
Alright thanks!
emerge -uDavN world
How do I get rid of the “DRI module not loaded” error?
Thanks.
does it SAY it’s an error?
Yes.
get rid of the AIGLX stuff.
(EE)
How do I do that?
ok. Anyway am off to bed… c ya
peace
Comment out Load “glx”?
Skunky, i was just googling the ssh thing, and it seems it will hang if there are open file descriptors or the terminal is still in use. familiar with that at all. i have only seen it on this one box
Skunky, how do I get rid of AIGLX?
I tried not loading “glx”, but then X wouldn’t even start
i can’t help you.
Using gentoo on a 333mhz pii based system with 96mb of ram sure does make you think of all the bloat/extra features and greater resource usage that applications nowadays use, using pretty much console clients for everything, and dillo for web browsing.
i accidentall made Program Files in wine, how do i remove it? rm Program Files doesnt work
You told me to get rid of the AIGLX stuff.
Would setting my login shell to screen stuff anything up?
rm Program\ Files
jdgbolt, more ram would give that more life
is 500 kbits/sec low for hard disk access, or is that normal?
yes.
Probably, yes.
I get 500 kbits/sec for downloads, so that must be slow
Damn.
Yeah, very true, don’t max out the processor too often, only the ram, currently using ion for the window manager.
Just have bash launch screen?
farrioth, octavarium rm on a directory doenst work. either rmdir witht the dir empty, or rm -Rf dir (carefull, that will delete without question. typo’s are not forgiven !! )
no such file or directory
you can add it to your .profile, so it starts automatically, but you need logic in your .profile if you do, so that it won’t try to start screen on non-interactive things.
How do you get rid of the AIGLX stuff?
Did try sticking in 1G of ram from my server that I have laying around, didn’t boot up, so had to replace it, they should be the same type of ram, but I guess not.
That’s what I’m doing, but it means I’m running alot of instances of bash unnecessarily.
don’t tell people to use -f with rm, it’s not nice. if you need -f with rm, you’re doing something wrong.
Skunky, hmm. ok. i know its not all that safe. i gave a warning with it
Have more than enough ram in the server anyway, considering it came with 9G, got it for $200 off of ebay.
Program\Files doesnt work anyway
no such directory
Oh yeah, forgot I had alias rm=’rm -r’.
Skunky?
octavarium, what dir are you in ?
?
octavarium, pwd
i can’t help you.
I’m trying to run revdep-rebuild but get http://rafb.net/p/V5MD5043.html Any ideas?
i made Program Files in wine
and i cant use spaces
It was your idea, you should be able to tell me how to do it.
Program\ Files
oh i forgot the space
gottcha
One thing though that is nice is I can use rtorrent on this box, works pretty well too, doesn’t have much bloat to it at all.
test
well i guess theres no reason to remove it if i know the directory and how to get to it
octavarium, for spaces you can use the escape \ like Program\ Files OR use quotes like “Program Files”
no, you see, it’s like this. I WILL NOT help someone who’s so pathetic that he can’t be bothered to spend 30 seconds looking something up in google. I am not your personal google-bot. so, back off.
ok,, i c
Are you using the stable branch?
I tried Google. It didn’t help much, so I came here.
Mmh, anyone happens to have any idea why mplayer is painfully slow with webcam capturing and stickcam (and similar) don’t scale the picture, but show like just the middle of it?
octavarium, the escape slash \ allows you to use the difficult characters like space, (, ), “, !
I just put ~x86 as my accepted keywords if that’s what you mean
so in my script wine will recognise the directory Program Files, and i dont need to use the \ right?
Please paste your make.conf and put a link here
If you don’t know how to disable DRI without getting a “DRI module not loaded” error, just say so. Don’t tell me to do something you don’t know how to do.
typos lol
http://rafb.net/p/4bTv0z40.html
does genkernel generate a rclinux file? I’m trying to setup grub on a nvraid and the wiki host says something about using init=/rclinux
what graphics card and driver?
I’m running it in a VM, so I’m using the vesa driver
And the above output is with ~x86 ?
Yup
Frungi is running vesa on a vm. he’s getting an error from AIGLX that dri is not loaded. dri is not loaded because there is no dri for vesa.
octavarium, if its a bash script, yes
qlist -Iv kde-base and post a link here
No, DRI is not loaded because I commented out Load “dri”
qlist is part of portage-utils
ah, ok
he can use mesa, right?
mesa?
he can use mesa, but he can’t use aiglx
mesa is the software rendering
ok
Oh
http://rafb.net/p/FPTjGs53.html
Did you change from x86 to ~x86 recently ?
Just a few hours ago actually
ok
Is there a chance that the VM uses my graphics card, even though lspci can’t identify it?
emerge -uDav world for starters
Or use revdep-rebuild -X -p
Are you using vmware?
No, I’m using Parallels
Oh woah, a lot of broken things
I think it’s pretty much the same thing
apple, right?
When you changed x86 to ~x86, you didn’t update your packages – that’s why emerge -uDav world will want to install a few packages
Right
revdep-rebuild -X shouldn’t complain now as it will try to rebuild the most recent version of the broken packages
whats a good app for riping dvd’s?
I won’t paste it, but revdep-rebuild sees MANY broken things.
By the way, do you really want to use ~x86 ?
Frungi, are you trying drm or 3d in a virtualized box ?
I was just playing arounf, but no. So how can I fix this and stay with a stable branch?
What’s drm?
First, did you emerge any package after changing x86 to
~x86 ?
direct rendering m… ?
I just installed xorg, and I get the DRI error every time I run startx and exit it
Yeah, maybe 30
hmm, then it might be hard to get back to x86
That’s not good lol
Frungi, i dont think dri or what ever will work in a virtualized box
i want to burn an installation CD using stock mac or windoze burners. don’t know how to set “raw” mode on these. do i have to do anything special?
qlop -l | tail -n 50 and paste a link
i mean burner software
http://rafb.net/p/sphTvR52.html
How can I stop DRI from loading without getting an error message that it isn’t loaded?
Do you have nero?
Frungi, i was asking a redhat tech guy about it for xen (similar to parallels i think) and he said only slow 2d will work on a virtualized client. the graphics card drivers are not that good (closed source) or dont support it.
Is AIGLX the problem?
not that i know of … what os is that?
for …
It may hgave been more than 30, noit sure to be honest
Frungi, remove it from xorg.conf i think. but i am not the person to ask. all i can tell you is what i heard. which may or may not be correct
By the looks of it, you emerged more than 30 packages
i’m getting this error trying to install gentoo:
I commented out DRI from xorg.conf, and X gives me a “DRI module not loaded” error
no such file xterm-222.tgz
Yeah
sorry, did I miss another “How do I run every single package in portage as testing, just so I can unmask a single package” ?
qlop -l and try to find out how many packages you installed
*package” question
looks like only xterm-223 is at the ftp site invisible-island.net
how can i fix?
find it elsewhere
Are you using the gli?
i’m just trying to install usin the live cd
or use a better term emulator…
I did `qlop -l | tail -n 100 | grep ‘Sat Jun 30′ | wc -l` and get 62
ewww, you checked off X or some DE, didn’t you?
is there a way to install gentoo w/o using a cd. i did it that way a couple of years ago but it appears that’s not available anymore?
DE?
what’d you use?
course, i did it from a linux machine
desktop environment
kde
yeah
? alt install
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3336703-highlight-.html?sid=08aa0ae844daa5b44ecb7dc8d553d743
You can simply use that terminal
sigh…
like a stage one or two tarball and lynx
solar–
? altinstall
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml
a href=”http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml”http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml/a
yes, there is
jeeves has failed you for the last time?
in my dreams
he used to be much worse
jeeves, i know, but that was kind of confusing …. sorry
and we didn’t used to have mzbot (like now :p)
hwern!
so how can i get this working
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml
k
you don’t need xterm for KDE
you probably won’t even want it
ok but supposing i did how would i fix it
62 packages in all, but if I take off ~x86, shouldn’t it downgrade all my packages?
does the installer have an option to skip the package?
You probably need to update the portage tree
No
oh are you done installing the base system?
And the problem with reverting from ~arch to arch is that sometimes it’s just plain not possible
unpossible :p
And i was like shit, i forgot to add the purdue to the stake
Ouch, haha
is there a utility that i can use to fix bad encodings? I have some chinese file names that have been turned into gibberish, is there someway to force interpretation in a specified encoding and convert it to UTF-8?
whats the command to add a /etc/init.d service to startup
rc-update
recode ?
thanks, i’ll check that out
So what do you think is my best bet?
Do you want to run arch or are you willing to run ~arch?
Well seeing as things will probably break/not compile host if I run ~arch. I’d like stable
DRI module not loaded” error, do I need to switch to mesa? And how do I do that?
Then you should revert your make.conf and try to rebuild the packages you’ve updated earlier to the stable version – but you must realize that might not work
I took out the accepted keywords and pretended to emerge world and get `14 upgrades, 48 downgrades, 3 new, 1 in new slot, 1 reinstall`
dri is used for 3d acceleration. It can use drm or one of the closed-source drivers for hardware acceleration or mesa for software acceleration
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_Gentoo_with_NVRAID_using_dmraid . When I try to boot it says “can not create directory ‘/newroot’: No space left on device”. Can someone please help?
Try to run that, but there’s no promises
Alright, thank you!
With DRI, I get a “Screen not DRI capable” error. Without it, I get an AIGLX error because it’s not loaded.
X seems to work either way, so can I just ignore the error?
Do you have a dri section on your xorg.conf ?
and a load dri statement?
No dri section, yes load dri
Should I have a section?
What happens if you comment out the load dri in the modules section? The above?
Yep
Do you have /dev/dri/* ?
No
Then comment out load dri
can anyone tell me why I might be getting an error telling me that there is no space yet avalible on my ramdrive?
i told you before. he’s got that commented out, but he’s trying to start aiglx, which won’t start because there’s no dri. aiglx must be disabled.
(EE) AIGLX: DRI module not loaded
VESA(0): Failed to set up write-combining range, and some hex numbers
qlist -IUv xorg-server – does it have the dri useflag?
Vesa? You can’t have DRI or AIGLX with Vesa.
qlist command not found
If so, remove the dri use flag from your make.conf or add “x11-base/xorg-server -dri” to your /etc/portage/package.use
qlist is part of portage-utils. run emerge -pv xorg-server
Should I emerge portage-utils?
yes
I would advice you to
Changing your driver from VESA to something else is an idea.. but I haven’t been following discussion, perhaps you have one of those graphics cards from early 90s?
and I would advise you to
He’s using parallels
512kb s3 or so
oh, ok.
which package provides “tc”?
thanks for the correction
your well come
what’s it do?
:p
that’s iproute2
You’re welcome*
that’s iproute2
tc is for setting QoS
thane kss
thanks
anybody know how to burn an installation cd with mac or windoze burning software? i don’t know how to select “raw mode” on these.
I can’t use AIGLX at all in a VM?
The most peculiar thing happened, it was like the shit rock and roll at the same time
they don’t seem to have those switches
ttotally, on mac, put a blank cd in, open disk utility, and select the iso, the burn
Are you coming from http://www.lartc.org/ ?
cool … thnx
ttotally, s/the/then/
Crazy gay people
mattmatteh, i gotta ask … what is s/the/then ?
That’s a sed construct
ttotally, spelling/from/to/ the last the should have been then
ttotally, then burn, not the burn
ah .. lol … thnx
It means replacing (s) the first word between // with the second word between //
vi ?
jmbsvicetto, i thought it was vi. funny, i use that syntax, but not the app
It’s used in many places now, but it started with sed, iirc
jmbsvicetto, good to know, i have been using it alot lately
it’s sed syntax, vi uses sed syntax
ahh
the only *nix languages i know… sed and awk. someday maybe i’ll get around to perl.
i know little sed, awk, and perl. would like to use them more often since they are rather powerful
and bash too
What does the X use flag do to gtk+?
where do you look to see why a particular package has been masked?
ok, xserver crashed, and now i have no sound, says the device is still busy :/, i think its because it crashed while wine was running. how do i get my sound working again?
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask
thx
jmbsvicetto, the script my friend gave me is from there
try killing wine incase it’s still running, else restarting alsa should help.
A package can be masked for a few different reasons
gtk+ doesn’t USE=X
hard-masked packages are listed on /usr/portage/packages/package.mask. A package can also have empty keywords or can be marked as testing ~arch
5+
Yeah it does: [ebuild N ] x11-libs/gtk+-2.10.13 USE=”jpeg tiff -X -debug -doc -xinerama” 14,809 kB
thx. This guy (medusa) is not in package.mask it seems to be only ~amd64. doesn’t build tho
restart alsa did work
How can I make screen number my windows form 1 instead of 0?
Great.
I have a trivial question about emerge. One of the (many) lines that fly by is, “checking whether build environment is sane…”, what does that mean?
=D
is there anything else that is similar to webmin
Were you looking at the gtk+ ebuild’s IUSE?
no, it doesn’t actually use it. IUSE=”debug doc jpeg tiff xinerama”
28/66 done, so far so good
it likely inherits it from something else
Okay, so it has no effect?
Yes, it does inherit from virtualx.eclass
if you turn it off, and it decides it needs to build cairo, and cairo builds with -X, then you’ll have problems. (:
Okay.
How do I find out where a use flag is being set?
Any recomendations for rss clients for KDE?
akregator
That’s what I’m using now, looks like the project is dead though
why do you think that?
man emerge is a good place to get all the info. /etc/make.conf, /etc/portage/package.keywords, and one more (i forget) with all the defaults
I added a new PCI SATA controller to my server, along with 3 more HDDs, which changed the /dev order. At first my non-boot LVM gave “missing UUID” errors, but I fixed that with pvcreate –uuid “the missing uuid” –restorefile /etc/lvm/archive/volumegroup_xxxx.vg /dev/sdd1, and then
vgcfgbackup && vgcfgrestore, which allowed me to activate the volume group and logical volume. But now the partition on my LVM has disappeared — even a dee
what pynic said. The default use flags are set on the profiles – /usr/portage/profiles/*
wiki looks to be hacked, no release since August 2nd, doesn’t seem to have a lot going on
what project?
akregator
Okay. I’m trying to figure out why -X is set for everything.
exit
ut2004 apparently becomes dependent on libstdc++.so.5 after installing a patch. Can I safely symlink that to the existing libstdc++.so.6? If not, what package would have version 5?
check your make.conf and look at ls -l /etc/make.profile
No, 5 and 6 are not compatible with each other.
libstdc++v3
Ok.. That package requires gcc v3
yeah, libstdc++-v3
missed a – there *g*
I’m running a gcc 4 system. I have to install an entire gcc slotted package just to run ut, a game that worked perfecly fine pre-patching?
libstdc++-v3 is not a the whole of gcc
It’s not in my make.conf and my profile is default-linux/amd64/2007.0
Wait, my mistake, I was thinking of libstdc++ (without the -v3)
emerge –info ?
That’s the one I tried and it wanted all of gcc v3.
Ok, I’ll try the other one then, thank you.
yeah, the virtual/libstdc++ is broken somehow.. it should be pulling libstdc++-v3 primarily but instead it pulls gcc-3.3.
it isn’t a bug, it is a feature of portage
Yeah, I assumed that the virtual would just give me identical results and look prettier on the world list
feature to get deps wrong? not sure I like that feature.
“It’s not a bug, it’s a feature”
portage will currently prefer to bring in another version of a package already installed than a new package when resolving virtuals
Just a moment.
well, anyway, I’m off to try this. Thanks.
look on bugzilla for package.prefer or something, that would need to be implemented iirc
“great”
yea..
http://rafb.net/p/WGGpy355.html
and it wouldn’t really matter if gcc3 was brought in, besides the fact it dies on march={athlon64,pentium-m} etc.
uand it wouldn’t really matter if gcc3 was brought in, besides the fact it dies on march={athlon64,pentium-m} etc./u
Yes, you’re using the 2007.0 profile. If this is a workstation, you should instead use 2007.0/desktop
what’s the custom-cflags USE flag for then?
no clue, look in the ebuild and tell me
can you explain the difference?
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=183766
between 2007.0 and 2007.0/desktop ?
already a but on the issue
Okay, sure…
yeah. Like how do you choose?
eselect profile list, then eselect profile set number
actually that was in relation to your thinking out loud, I have not seen the ebuild
just look at /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/amd64/2007.0/make.defaults and /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/amd64/2007.0/desktop/make.defaults
my mplayer cant find the second audio stream in dual audio .ogm files, can anyone help me fix that?
i emerged with ogg and vorbis
Notice the difference in the use flags. The desktop profiles have quite a few more use flags enabled by default
aha.
In this particular case, the X use flag is enabled on the desktop profile, but not on the generic profile
I am using the same profile but didn’t have his problem. How do you decide between desktop/server? I have a pretty beefy machine. Do I want server?
Is there a way to quickly tell what effects a particular use flag will have on a package
hehe, actually server is generally used for slimmer systems
desktop it is
The issue is not the hardware. Generally, when building a server, one doesn’t want to have so much cruft around – so there’s less default options set
ok. Thx
ahoy
euse -i USEflag
Anyone know anything about sniffing out msn packets for chatter?
Neozonz, use wireshark
what’s the performance loss on a sollution like the one mentined here http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=82429&sid=078cfceda4f6957962e91bed8001483f
I take it you have to be blessed in some way to talk on gentoo-dev?
;kjfddsaakfldjsd/j freebsd
ratmandu, can it be hosted on any computers or a gateway computer only
You need to be granted voice
In make.conf, does -j (with no number) have any negative consequences?
yes.
Namely?
55/66
no limit on the number of opened threads from the Makefile
I know what it does, but why would that be a bad thing, if you’re not doing anything else at the time?
Does anyone use LVM?
what not create another filesystem within the filesystem
okay, so is standard install okay?
I’ve been trying for 7 days to get my pcmcia or usb network card to show up in ifconfig -a (iwconfig) and I can’t get a damn thing!
Don’t ask to ask, just ask.
Don’t threads have overhead? Why pay all the overhead if you don’t have too? slows things down
I had to completely redo my system with my xp pro vlk, because it erased my partitions, but I wasn’t worried, was redoing things before, and erased the partition I had debian, on, I only created a 20 GB blank partition for gentoo, and saving the rest for Mandriva Corporate Desktop
4
I’ve been trying to find someone actually knowledgable with LVM for about 3 hours now…
Even slower than doing one at a time?
that’s exactly what it’s doing
What’s happened since last night, anything?
fiveflat, , I hear you fustration on things, I have to study gentoo’s system, in order to learn it, because I am so used to debian, etc
Asking a specific question may help.
get some sleep.
as in a filesystem within a single file
I added a new PCI SATA controller to my server, along with 3 more HDDs, which changed the /dev order. At first my non-boot LVM gave “missing UUID” errors, but I fixed that with pvcreate –uuid “the missing uuid” –restorefile /etc/lvm/archive/volumegroup_xxxx.vg /dev/sdd1, and then
vgcfgbackup && vgcfgrestore, which allowed me to activate the volume group and logical volume. But now the partition on my LVM has disappeared –
I haven’t made any progress. Like I said I can see my card when I “lspci” or “lsusb”
okay, I deleted the 20 GB partition, and now I”m going to specify a good layout, anyone interested in helping me etc.. I chose standard install
Frungi, that’s why set it to 1 + # of cpu’s. experiment if you feel the need. set it to 10 or higher to feel it
Is the driver being loaded?
I guess I could choose a /boot /root /home /swap
what controller do you have anyway? or what lsci shows?
firendly12345 yea, do you think there’s a performance loss?
I don’t use LVM, unfortunately, but someone may be able to help with that.
um. you’re using the installer? stop now. we can’t help you when the installer blows up. use the handbook.
That’s what I don’t understand. I emerged madwifi and I see ath_pci in my lsmod, etc. But dmesg shows some trouble and I’m not sure where to go from here. Let me rafb.net it…
lol
Sure.
yep I’m using the installer
Like I said, stop now.
I asked the same question about an hour and a half ago with no response, so I was trying a simplier question…like you said, you don’t use LVM. It seems not a lot of people do, despite it being touted by md.
I could use the text installer, because I”m used to doing netinstall s with debian
nah, then why do they have it
probably, but I can’t think of a better solution
..other than not using ext for large files at all and moving to something like xfs
going to take a look at that Gentoo fedora linux Handbook
because some damn fool decided it was a good idea. it’s not. it blows up and eats your hard drive in the process.
http://rafb.net/p/ylGKxh47.html
lol
anyone know how to fix compiz fusion that has no windows borders no title bar
Thanks.
I can do that with firmware, ubcd, and Acronis Disk Director Suite
and heck, not to even mention East-Tec Disk Sanitizer..
I know how to manage the hard drives, and operating systems.. Skunky
anyoneee?
Its an Atheros 5005G (Belkin pcmcia card) I’ve also tried my Netgear WG111 usb network card.
reload the window decorator
i did no luck
you’ve not got automatic module loading enabled in your kernel, and it wants a module to be loaded
Personally, I’ve never used the gli or have any interest in it, but please don’t ditch like that
well since you say that, I best.. install my Mandriva Corporate Desktop 4, because I need to be beta testing for Mandriva team
That’s what I don’t understand. I’m sure that I’ve got that. But how do I make sure of it?
The gli team has been working a lot on it
have you tried to modprobe the module it’s asking for?
yes
yes, and all reports are that the latest incarnation is WORSE than the 1 before.
ugh anyone know anything
Please join #gentoo-xeffects
k
Are you sure it’s not a firmware issue?
No. But madwifiexplicitly shows the atheros 5005G. But is madwifi-ng and madwifi-ng-tools all I should emerge? Do I have to load drivers separately as well?
Anyone know how to setup a parallel port in /etc/inittab? I can’t seem to find an actual example anywhere online.
I recompiled xorg-server without using dri and got rid of that error message, but X is still giving me a warning from the graphics driver
“Failed to set up write-combining range” and some hex numbers
Any ideas?
what does modprobe ath_rate_sample say?
It’ll load. But ifconfig -a doesn’t get any better. Also – when I do that, should ‘dmesg’ update? Because it says the same thing
You don’t get the nic on ifconfig -a ?
No
Anyone?
Then you’re either missing the driver or the kernel doesn’t know how to use that driver with the nic
I do have an internal NIC card and it is active. That shouldn’t matter though, should it?
doesn’t madwifi include the driver?
Can you pastebin output of modprobe, lspci and lsusb?
yes, hang on
I don’t know if madwifi includes the support for that specific model
Did you built the internal nic driver as a module or built-in the kernel?
jmbsvicetto: http://rafb.net/p/oPHSTh25.html
Thanks.
the internal is built in
Is there any tool I can use to do in-depth analysis of a volume? I’m trying to figure out what happened to this ext3 partition on my logical volume.
You can try making it as a module and check if it makes any difference
You should check the output of dmesg after loading the module
It worked without a hitch!
No one knows what to do with a warning about write-combining range?
a warning shouldn’t prevent X from working
That in particular is what’s weird. Should dmesg update after I load a module? because: Unable to load needed module: ath_rate_sample; no support for automatic module loading3Error loading module “ath_rate_sample” is still there…
No, X seems to be working fine, but warnings still aren’t good
change the kernel config and add support for automatic module loading
So I should just ignore the warning?
I get quite a few warnings on X startup
Where do I do that?
Don’t you get a message saying that it will use a specific sub-range afterwards?
automatic kernel module loading
You’ll have to recompile the kernel, make && make modules_install, copy the new kernel to /boot, update your boot loader config and restart the system
Thanks again.
when you say update my boot loader config – do you mena copy .config to /boot/config?
jmbsvicetto, no, the warning is the last message
yw
no, you should also do that, but I mean editing grub.conf – if you want/need to
Is X working or did it stop/crash?
okay, I can try that real quick. I thought I had auto module loading installed, but I didn’t! it’s making right now.
I haven’t done much in X yet besides type in the windows and resize the clock, but it seems to work fine
Then let it be and move forward
Will do
i just found something strange. when i run # pinky i get a few tty logins from the user that is not logged anymore. how can i ‘kill ‘ them ?
Try running this: wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta
what happens when you dont comment out DRI
I’ve tried that yesterday (or the day before). I get a message that ath0 doesn’t exist
Since I recompiled xorg-server without dri, I get an error that the module wasn’t found
X still works though
Hmm. I’ll keep searching. Excuse my slow internet. You are using madwifi-ng, right?
weird
“module does not exist”
yes, that’s what I’m using. I’m primarily trying to the the pcmcia card up and running. But I’ll take either one at this point. Thanks for the help!
it is using that xorg.conf right?
Elfeater, I apparently can’t use DRI, at all, ever, because I’m running Linux in a VM
Oh? Not the usb card?
So I took dri out of make.conf and recompiled xorg-server, and I’m not getting either error message now that I was before
Thanks to all involved parties, btw
Like I said I’d take either one at this point. I thought the madwifi was primarily for the pcmcia (Atheros) card though…
ah, well i have no experience with VM linux install (or very little, some redhat some years back)
is there a tool that shows what applications are accessing a certain harddisk, eg the filesystem equivalent to mysqladmin showprocesses
lsof
Okay, sure. What laptop do you have and what’s your madwifi-ng version?
Wow – so I’ve updated my kernel and included auto module install support. I still get: Unable to load needed module: ath_rate_sample; no support for automatic module loading3Error loading module “ath_rate_sample”
That means that you’re not using the latest kernel
uname -a
Dell Latitude D505 madwifi-ng version: 0.9.3.1

hi guys, I wanna converta flac file to mp3 or wav, how can I do it?
grep KMOD /usr/src/linux/.config ?
flac + lame
CONFIG_KMOD=y
# CONFIG_X86_P4_CLOCKMOD is not set
farrioth what is lame?
&& lame -b 96 -h audiodump.pcm
lame is not an mp3 encoder
i think
hmm, you have it enabled. Don’t know what could be causing that error message
96?!?
mp3 encoder
space matters
So does quality, and 96 makes my ears bleed
-b 320 is my setting
heh, FLAC or wavpack for me
hey, careful now
fine, 224
does FLAC create smaller files than 320kbps mp3s?
128 is fine
haha.. no.
larger
FLAC is lossless.
hmm, fiveflat sorry. friendly12345 that was for you
Lossless can do maybe half the size of raw, from what I’ve seen
128 is an absolute bare minimum. 192 is good.
Exactly, Monkeh
i record off vinyls so 96 is fine
I couldn’t find anything on a quick bugzilla look…has anyone else noticed the latest nvidia driver (100.14.09) making vlc crash on video?
for CDs i use 112
No!
or I use aac :p
112? For CD? Dear lord..
I like vinyl-like sounds
96 kbps off of vinyl is one of the worst things imaginable…
I use wavpack. If you can’t tell the difference, you need new speakers/headphones/ears
actually i’m aurally hypersensitive
I know it’s supposed to, but does AAC really sound any better than MP3 at the same bitrate?
yeah
yeah, it does
could someone help me write a udev rule to make may lan card eth0 ’static’?
How much better?
Guys, can we move the enconder format / quality discussion to #gentoo-chat?
Moving
hi
Do you have 2 or more nics and they’re getting swapped?
Hello.
not usually…
i must register my nik )
sorry, I wasn’t clear
I meant do you have 2 nic (network interface cards) and want them to be fixed to ethX ?
i own a firewire, a wired lan adapter and a wifi adapter…
anyone know why conky would show that MPD isn’t responding, but it’s working just fine?
100.14.09 was crappy … try 100.14.11
TopoMorto if you have firewire, it probably put your firewire device as eth0, eth1 is probably your wired
but the lan adater (eth8 now…) change ethX on evey reboot…
pi-rho, is that in the main tree?
TopoMorto, it doesn’t stay as one device?
it was announced in the nzone forums
Possibly conky doesn’t have permissions? That’s my only thought, though.
I just ‘cp nvidia-drivers-100.14.06.ebuild nvidia-drivers-100.14.11.ebuild && ebuild nvidia-drivers-100.14.11.ebuild digest’
look at /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
no it dosent stay as a device… so is difficult to mek it runon boot
i’m doing this now…
If you have a recent udev version, you should be able to easily set the ethX devices
.09 kept locking my machine up when I killed Xorg
Giving it a go
mpd is running as a different user…i suppose that could be it?
i will pastebin /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules that is overvritten on every reboot…
what udev version?
Possibly.
how i can retrive the udev vesion?
qlist -Iv udev | emerge -pv udev | eix udev
i’ve got X working now with the i810 driver, now i’d like to get dri and glx working.. can anyone point me in the right direction?
buy an nvidia card
that’s my suggestion
Tnx ) udev 104-r12
stable system? arch instead of ~arch ?
Yeah the new version of the driver does nothing.
stable system x86 architecture
Anyway, I think udev-104 should be ok
I get [00000535] main private error: option glx-shm does not exist thrown on the command line and then that typical 5 line X Error dump
hmmm … sorry man … I’ve got vlc running on .11 on mine … have you rebuilt vlc?
its a laptop, my friends
I rebuilt it on .09, not .11 yet
then emerge drm
please be constructive
i would have an nvidia but its a nice laptop
no, don’t emerge drm
that was constructive.
the drm ebuild has the drivers, but they might be already built
this is, as promised my /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
what card?
did you eselect opengl set nvidia?
then all you would need to do is modprobe i810
One thing that’s always annoyed me about linux is how logging out from (currently kde, but seems to be the same for all window managers), it does’nt gracefully quit applications, and just kills them. So If I have openoffice open with a unsaved document on another virtual desktop and don’t see
it, go logout, no do you want to save before quitting window at all – the window manager just kills openoffice, losing my document. The same thing happens for firefox
, if I have it open when I quit my session, when it starts next session it always says it was unexpectedly quit last time.
What X terminal is recommended for Japanese characters?
btw, if you don’t know the question, don’t but in… it’s rude, and wrong
its a intel 945gm express
s/but/butt
x11-drm is poorly supported
It seems a crazy problem to never have fixed and seems to be the same in all distro’s
pi-rho, yeah, I did
5 nics???
atleast it’s open source
ok, what do i do?
is very very very strange, if you look tre of them are the same one…
vlc’s gonna be another 5-6 minutes to build…I’ll see how that goes
or somebody?
don’t know what you’re talking about, but there are other open source methods apart from the x11-drm package
you need the x11-drm package, aka drm, however it might already be built.
is very very very strange, if you look three of them are the same one…
you can try modprobe i810
then check dmesg to see if it loaded “drm”
You can and should use the kernel drm drivers
wow everyone’s got an opinion tonight.
what jmbsvicetto said
did you know that x11-drm is the same as the kernel 90% of the time?
fucking idiots
Geeze, I hate rebooting…my alsamixer settings are never persistent
seems it’s time for me to go have ideas to bed
/etc/conf.d/alsasound
anyhow, the kernel options you are after are:
seems that my lan adapter change is MAC on every reboot, so udev add it to the rules
well, i’m adding sound in kernel now, so its cool, where do i add it in the kernel?
jmbsvicetto, Am I alooking at RESTORE_ON_START or SAVE_ON_STOP, because they both say yes
hmm, do you get them back by running alsactl restore?
If you do, I have the exact same issue on one box out of many – I can’t explain it
Intel 830M and i830 as module
friendly12345? jmbsvicetto?
cool, thanks
what sound card?
hmm, what friendly12345 said?
jmbsvicetto, well they always return to the same weird borked state of some output type being muted, analog front (master volume) being down to 14 (I keep it around 41-43 usually) and Analog Rear (NOTHING) being at 11. I just have to run alsamixer whenever I boot to fix those 3 things.
dri in your use flags, i810 for your VIDEO_CARDS entry in make.conf
It’s been plaguing me for MONTHS now, no one has any idea what the heck my system’s doing, since it doesn’t throw any errors or warnings with either the shutdown initscript or the startup one.
Try running alsactl restore the next time. If that works, you’re having the same issue I have
I’ll keep that in mind
Do you have a solution for it, or just the same problem?
emerge x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810 as well and make sure your have the Section “DRI” within your xorg.conf –see the gentoo wiki
And VLC still doesn’t work after a recompile
there is a way to make my MAC Fixed, i never see a lan adapter that change his mac randomly ((
no solution, I can’t understand what causes that
jmbsvicetto, what card/driver ?
i’m already running with that driver
e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC’97 Audio Controller (rev
ok, kernel all done, and got sound added too. i’m in a screen session on a server, let me detach, reboot this laptop with the new kernel, brb
jmbsvicetto, that’s weird…I have an Intel card on the mobo but it’s disabled at the bios level, I’m running an Audigy LS.
that’s sound in kernel, correct (the alsa-driver is being deprecated)
is there a gentoo general chat?
?
can someone tell me which package net-setup is apart of?
sappling, #gentoo-chat methinks
