or is the one in unstable not up to the duty?
my bike is strapped ot my car .. now i just have to remember to leave work at a decent time
the unstable rtorrent/libtorrent10 is in par with upstream.

For some reason Openbox and my GDM login window have the display resolution set to 1440xXXXX, though in xorg.conf I have the max res set to 1440×900.
oh, I see what you mean.. but need cvs to do my stuff..
you’re gov’t!
Anyone have any ideas?
indeed
which resoltuions are listed ?
hello, i am following http://wiki.debian.org/MacBook and it says that there is no package named refit…

it’s required by gnome, so not really possible without modifying the dependencies and likely the maintainers have the dependency for a reason

does ANYONE here know ANYTHING about display resolutions?
it would be nice to not have seemingly extra crap running like evolution-data-server though, wouldn’t it?
I don’t use it either. icedove++
yeah, that too
coir, sup?
Whats wrong?
hi
For some reason my GDM login window and all desktop environments default their resolution to something higher than 1440×900, and 1440×900 is the largest resolution I have listed in xorg.conf ; any idea why?
The latest one is really rather good at detecting issues
Odd.
So, I have “hidden” screen space.
rahul, i want to certains files (PHP Scripts, text files, images, etc) be opened by specifiq apps when cliqued in my file browser (actually i use three file browsers, Thunar, Konqueror, and Efm)
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
I did that.
that has never failed me
are you *sure* your monitor hits 1440×900?
For some reason GDM actually detects a resolution larger than 1440×900
what kind of monitor?
(model/make?)
Yes, I can set it to 1440×900 and it works fine, but the login window defaults to a larger resolution.
coir, wiiiierd
gdm?
Yes.

WIIIIIIERD
sorry, I can’t help
Is there something to reconfigure in GDM possibly?
not the slightest idea why you’ve got that SNAFU

i’m trying to install debian on a external hard disk, but i’m wondering if the speed would be as good as a real hard disk considering all the data is coming through a USB port? have any of you ever tried such thing or seen it?
How would I change my default dm to kdm?
anyone have an account at Pinka? (http://pinka.bruceblacklaws.net) ?
It should work fine.
How fast is the HDD?
dpkg-reconfigure kdm ?
i’m not really sure, it’s a 80GB SATA2 HDD
coir, aptitude install xdm is a possibility
What is good about xdm?
is it USB 2.0?
yeah
as coir said, it would work fine, but it will be noticably slower than SATA
coir, nothing
I would hope to god it would be USB 2.0.
o_o
its just a login manager.
it will be marginally slower, unless you’ve got a junky USB 2.0 adapter in which case it’ll be much slower
I’ve heard of people running OS X from their iPods before.
sure, doesn’t mean the disk I/O is fast though
yeah, ipods can be used as rescue disks
how can i find out, which package includes hwclock? the package is installed on the machine.

If a package is listed as “un”, that means dpkg doesn’t know about it, but it is listed in a dependency somewhere
i thought it meant it was listed in the status file ?
Where do I get autoreconf?
Anyone know how I list the content of a tar file? tar -t file.tar.gz doesn’t seem to work. Any idea?
I installed cupsys on my debian server, but how can I configure my printer on a headless debian install?
I also want to have the cups server running

that might be possible too, but on my system it seems most of the “un” packages don’t exist in the status file

how do I access it?
localhost:631 isnt working

you can’t do localhost when its not the same machine

hmm
ssh to it
nmap localhost -p600-700
that’ll show what ports are running what in the range 600-700
if its only running to 127.0.0.1, that’ll tell you
port 631 open

your problem is that the .* is greedy
I know about that greedy stuff I tried .*? many places.
anyone know where I can get a live CD of something like a web appliance sort of thing? You know, like, just a browser that steals X all to itself.
you want [^0-9]*\d+
I need to fix up a thin client
there are a ton on the vmware site, if you care to extract one and/or use vmware
can anyone see from this(http://pastebin.ca/674301) or think of any reason why im getting connection reset by peer on my xbox(192.168.2.103) when i try to watch tv-links videos? videos work fine on this pc and i do get internet on my xbox.
I can do vmware

jmalicki is right, you need something to keep the .* from matching all but the last digit
http://www.vmware.com/appliances/
a few are commercial, but the majority are just free ones people put together
debian/ubuntu/gentoo/whatever
it would be nice if they were signed by their organizations
s/(.*)(?!\d)(\d+)/$1 |$2|/
err, without that space
woah
man, Q-Bert is pissed
well, they’re mostly just utilities done by users, though I totally agree an official appliance would be cool
at some stage it is sort of a trust thing, like i could throw up a new ubuntu as a virus delivery vehicle quite easily
yup
\amethystI don’t know how you did it yet, but that seems to work.
\amethystIf it works then thanks. n_n
plus it requires vmware, which is pretty un-debian
(.*) means any string, capture as $1. (\d+) is a sequence of one or more numbers, capture as $2
though you can technically convert a vmware appliance to qemu or xen really easily
the tricky part is (?!\d), which means “only match if the last character was *NOT* a \d”
\amethyst: Yep I know. What’s this ?! thing? is it similar to ?:?
\amethyst: that syntax screams perl users, i hate it
Is there a name for it I can search in man perlre?
how can i install aclocal ?
It’s a “zero-width negative look-behind assertion”. Look in man perlre
I’ve been building an ubuntu-based appliance for a product we’re developing. I must say, it’s a really nice way to hand out demos of software, particularly if the software is complicated to set up or use
hey, i tried moving the entries in /etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/shadow to the new machine. now when the user logs in, they get a “I have no name!@debian” prompt. What did I miss? thanks
\amethyst: why don’t people just use ([^0-9]*)\d+?
because that’ won’t match a2ps33
or rather, it won’t make it a2ps|33|
\amethyst: point
since it’s all preconfigured, it dramatically lowers the entry point for potential users
hello, I’ve installed NTP and want to use Europe/London. But when I type ‘date’, it shows the UTC. And in X, the timezone looks like UTC. What can I do to use BST (Europe/London) system-wide? I used tzselect but it didn’t make any effect.

!setthetime
!set the time
To set the time in debian, use date –set. The truly enlightened user, however, will install ntp and adjtimex to have their clock set automatically on reboot and slewed to match time servers. You may also need to run tzconfig (sarge, etch) and make sure you have the right UTC setting in
/etc/default/rcS first.
basically, im looking for a nice howto on moving user accounts over, with their password to a new linux machine!
since it won’t match a raw number

I think dpkg knows the answer to this. When I get this error “Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly?” and I did ssh -X and x11 port forwarding is enabled on the other end, is that a problem on the remote host (the one I sshed into) or the local host (x server)?
!magic cookie
!mit magic cookie
hmm… mit-magic-cookie is ’su user_running_x -c “xauth extract – $DISPLAY” | xauth merge -’ or “export XAUTHORITY=/home/USER_RUNNING_X/.Xauthority” (either (but not both) will let you run programs under X as root, when X was started by non-root), but xhost +localhost is damned insecure. Setting
export XAUTHORITY=/home/$USER/.Xauthority in /etc/profile makes it automatic. ‘zless /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz’. Also, see sshx
may I have a magic cookie with my milk ?

but “just knowing” makes more sense
add “single” to the kernel option line at boot time, or in /boot/grub/menu.lst
4.0
add “single” to kernel boot arguments
is there some known problem with gnome-vfs in sid? i get crashes whenever i an application displays the file selector, since updating before
that’s what? woody?
etch
i want to add more sites to my apt-get
to expand the package search
why?
which file should i edit?
edit /etc/apt/sources.list
you’re going to screw up your box again
again?
what do you mean, again?
how do I change the documentroot of apache in debian?
/etc/apache2/sites-available/default
bulio|, look at the configuration files in /etc/apache(|2)
which one is it?
dkr, how?
depends on which apache you have installed
2
/etc/apache == apache 1.3.x /etc/apache2 == apache 2.x
actually. the default grub menu in debian should include an entry for single. yuo likely just need to hit yur downa rrow to choose that line from the grub menu when you boot up
is there by any chance a command line / curses program that can read .doc files?
strings
strings?
that was a joke
when you ask for a command and you don’t know the one you are given, your next step should probably be “man command”
hi, my iptables do not log anymore in the /var/log/iptables.log someone could help me
not entirely
does this look like a time/date code: T1188363150
well I thought it was funny
No, I don’t have grub
yeah i know… just ’strings’ sounds like an unusual name for a program
This isn’t debian, its just I’m asking here
you’re using lilo?
I just have “boot:”
ah, that’s much easier, that is a unix epoch: perl -wle’print scalar localtime 1188363150′
0
Its BoothBox
CD?
do i just do strings somefile.doc
yeah
at boot:, try “linux single”
I need single user mode so I can install it to disk
Could not find image “linux”
easier way to translate from the command line: date -d ‘@1188363150′
hit your tab key, should lsit available images
find out what it’s default image host name is (it will say “loading something” right after boot)
dkr, nope
ok, so when i go apt-get install gtk-gnutella it doesnt show up
isolinux doesn’t I don’t think
but the file is listed in here
explody, too fast
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/download.pl?arch=i386&file=pool%2Fmain%2Fg%2Fgtk-gnutella%2Fgtk-gnutella_0.96.4-2_i386.deb&md5sum=6a0588134249c4066ece18fdf775e2fe&arch=i386&type=main
so, i dont get it. shouldnt it show in apt-get as well?
prompt
dkr thank you that helps tremendously
forks.
\amethyst yours didnt work
did you leave out the T ?
the formatting seems all messedu p
ameth you left it out
ameth i copied and pasted yours verbatim
yeah, you’re supposed to
what does date –version say ?
date (coreutils) 5.2.1
yeah, that’s where the humor aspect came in. strings just read the ascii text characters, not the proprietary binary formatting stuff
is there a live debian distro that will run on powerpcs? (non-intels)
gotcha…the program ‘catdoc’ does what i need
eddiemonge, yes
its called “debian”
It runs on pretty much everything
oh, nifty
must have been added in a later version
my server is a powermac 300
\amethyst: there’s newer versions? how do i get them
sounds like you’re running sarge
you’d need to upgrade to etch or find some sarge backports
sarge probably loses security support sometime next year, so you need to upgrade anyway
hello everybody
i have a smal question
hello
i got a dependency problem while trying to install gtk-gnutella
i’m using gnome
could someone please join #flood so that i can paste the output there?
and i want to hide desktop icons
how can i do that ?
thanks !!
just use http://pastebin.ca
!tell enigma about paste
kernelnewbies tuturials dont work debian
can you be more specific
how can i hide desktop icons ?
delete them?
You could also prefix them with a dot maybe?
i want to keep them and just hide them
desktop
is there a way to tell nautilus to not show them ??
explody i need to compile the kernel because one option they say … to i can put the wireless here working … and the kernel is giving all type of mistakes … i tyr many tuturials and i really need the wireless … to i can work whith this computer so im stoped
i allready try it for a
few days but nathing
looks nathings is working here and i allreayd spent a few days in my life try to compile the kernel whith your tuturials and nathing
What’s wrong with making them hidden by adding a dot to their name?
i dont know how to work around this dependency thing
hi
which wireless support?
if it was the only way ! i’ll be sad cause windows can do that
did anyone know app that i can use for virtual CD in debian ?
I just told you where the nautilus setting is…
i have tested but the icons still there
explody they say i nede to disable one option here to i install one codec .. to put the wireless work … but to do that first i nede to compile my kernel …. and im here for days … for nathing … makes me thinking why im using linux ..
when writing a script using tar is it better to cd to the dir and use an absolute path for the -f location? OR use the -C option?
Azar, virtual cd?
yes
it isn’t better to do either
what wireless card do you have
6 of one, half a dozen of the other eh?
Azar, is that another term for mounting an iso?
ok thanks
I just didn’t find many -C examples so I was wondering if it wasn’t very “standard”
for example in WinXp you can use Deamon tools to mount iso file and the OS think it is in the CD drive
but i still have to rename the other folders with the “.” in the begining !! ;-(
explody i bealive is bether we concentract in kernel stuff
Azar, mount -o loop (man mount)
if I don’t know which card you need to support, I can’t help you fix the kernel
Azur1, ^^
what am I supposed to do, guess which hardware you have?
explody the problem is the kernel dont work … ok one minute please
explody ipw3945(wifi)
you do not need to recompile the kernel for that
apt-get install module-assistant madwifi-source madwifi-tools
m-a a-i madwifi
done
the 3945ABG isn’t atheros
but it isn’t much harder than that
wooooops
!tell corydora about ipw3945
you’re right, I was looking at the wrong laptop
thank you
zinx do i innstall and do what explode says or i do what you are say?
do what zinx says
because what you tell to me i allready try
it should work
explody i tell you im here for days try to put this work what he is say to me … it simple dont work here
if it doesn’t, you’ll have to be more specific than “doesn’t work”
i dont know
zinx so tell to me where i shoud go?
h3sp4wn, is there a cross gdb for powerpc ?
we could probably help here if we had enough information to do so, but all we know is that it “doesn’t work”
here is a page with some information on the 3945: https://www.klabs.be/~fpiat/linux/debian/Etch_on_Thinkpad_T60.html
anyone ever tried to make a dvd that will boot a live distro on windows, macintels and powerpcs?
boot a distro on windows?
on wintel you mean?
explody im using one asus g1s
you mean on intel?
not thinkpad …
it doesn’t matter, just look at the part about the networking
i want a dvd that will boot a live cd image on x86 and ppc machines
the ASUS G1S-A1 has a 4965AGN
hi there
i have a problem upgrading mailman on debian during a dist-upgrade from sarge-etch
the errors i encounter are at http://rafb.net/p/jQdgFY38.html
can someone have a look at them and help?
explody they dont use the wireless drive … from asus thta i cant install here looks like
you’ll have to make 2 separate dvds I believe
you’ll need to upgrade your kernel to 2.6.22 and use the iwlwifi drivers at intellinuxwireless.org, grab 0.1.12 – i don’t believe it is packaged in debian yet.
you’ll need the firmware too
listen to zinx
(debian, perplexingly, has the iwlwifi firmware, but it is outdated)
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianLive/Howto/ISO_%28multiarch%29
zinx that what i was tell you … that im having kernel problems
deja vu
that whta im try to do and it is not working
what version of debian are you running? etch/lenny/sid?
so my 1 question was why the tuturials of the kernel.org kernelnewbies are not working whith debian
\amethyst: neato, I didn’t know that
zinx wel i chance the sources to install sid to try
sid has 2.6.22
\amethyst: thanks!
so you won’t need to compile hosting it if you’re using sid
zinx i dont wnat to use sid here
ah
this is to supost be stable pc
so i nede to compile my own kernel
grab the source for 2.6.22, copy the /boot/config-2.6.* for your running kernel to .config in the unpacked source, and use make-kpkg to build it
urg o0 0o
What filesystem you think is better for desktop use?
let me see if there’s a HOWTO anyway for iwlwifi specificly
zinx i allready try make-kpg … and nathing …
AFAIK, ext3 is slower than ReiserFS (and Reiser4). Do you use one of these filesystems?
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=10812
how do I change the timezone on the console?
claudio`: ext3 is good for general use, reiser handles lots of small files quite well, XFS handles large files quite well
doesn’t cover compiling the kernel though
zinx explody ok just leave thank you very much for your help
maby i just put windows here
make-kpkg did absolutely nothing? that is odd, it usually at least gives an error message.
i know also that with reiser it’s possible to recovery the erased files by rebuilding the tree while with ext3 (and XFS) it’s not possible.
forget i can have one more mouth this stop
claudio`: the biggest differences between them are ususally people’s opinions about which is better. I’ve used those and more with success, and I have only very rarely experienced anything that made one look better than nother
na komm, du feige sau. geil dich hier auf Freenode auch noch ein paar mal auf solange ich nach proxies scanne
fwiw i have an ASUS G1S-A1 running Debian, wireless works fine :/
good luck
in fact everything but the webcam works great (OLED included) – the webcam uses a standard protocol so i blame linux for not supporting it properly
reiser (3 at least) doesn’t support extended attributes from what I’ve seen
Hello need help with getting security software for a web cam can be used as a motion detector
in linux
!tell Bibleman_Bill about search
look at the package ‘motion’
ok will try
zinx forget … just your way or nathing that the problem …
assuming your webcam is supported by V4L
this linx tuturials are stupid cruisels sometimes
ican see the preview with the Cam stream
i try weeks follow tuturials and everyone says difreent things
and none worksssssssss
there are many millions of problems that can occur, we can not narrow it down without any information, and we aren’t paid enough to go through the billions of solutions to those millions of problems until one works
zinx that is insane stuff
i got this stoped for 1 mouth because of that and what more makes me bored is i know we got software to put this works but i got this stoped
error messages tend to help a lot if you post the whole message (though not in a channel – use a pastebin or something, ask dpkg about nopaste)
ok im sorry guys good night
thanks for the help ok nop forget cya sorry for the troubles
I was just about to provide a long, snappy comeback
my kernel’s broke, can you fix it please
How do I allow for login to X on my ubuntu server remotely from my PC. I have RealVNC on my PC but X is not running on my machine. How do I turn on X through the console and then connect?
hi, i have problems during a dist-upgrade from sarge-etch
try this: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xvnc_terminal_server
mailman will not upgrade due to some python Attribute error
!ubuntu
Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian, and it unlikely lives up to Debian’s standards (see Debian policy). Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on
#debian.
same basic steps for any linux distro
did you read release notes?
http://rafb.net/p/jQdgFY38.html
sure i did read the release notes
vncserver starts a fake X session anyway
maybe not every single sentence. is there something in there regarding mailman that i overlooked/
bmaybe not every single sentence. is there something in there regarding mailman that i overlooked//b
why oh why is firefox so fucking slow
WHY
do you have many extensions installed?
specifially designed for the doped
I need a quick answer to a mate why debian is better than ubuntu
lool
plenty of extensions run lots of javascript on every single page
\amethyst, flashblock and webdev
hi all
/msg dpkg why debian
cmacis, better is highly subjective.
!better
from memory, better is a matter of personal taste; asking “is foo better than bar?” is almost meaningless unless we know what *you* mean by “better”.
not familiar with webdev, is it any faster when you disable it?
because it doesn’t load a bunch of useless shit on your pc that is totally useless.
would be my answer
\amethyst, not really
oh, then it’s just firefox being an ass
hehe Quintin
maybe try epiphany
or firefox on winxp. which is superfast.. =\
any ideas regarding my problem?
as i told you before, just read release notes, feel free to mail about if its not mentioned there
Debian cannot solve every single fucking problem for you
lol
i did read the release notes. and i do not feel that a broken update path from sarge to etch is a minor thing. and this is not just a “small fucking” (your words) problem encountered because i put unstable on production systems
:-O
just try to remove mailman and re-install it later new
(thats what in my experiences help…)
same problem
remove and re-install, huh? is this #windowsserver ?
exactly. maybe a try a reboot
try to purge EVERYTHING
even the config-files and such
(if you did the upgrade process it should able to install mailman, otherwise its a bug)
Doesn’t the OP want to keep his working MLs ?
yes, i would like to. IF it is necessary i will make a (seperate and most recent) backup of my configuration files and purge them _then_. If that is the only way to achieve an upgrade i will do so..
maybe compiling the old working version of mailman from source package under etch works? I’m not very familiar with source packages but it did the trick for me once
but i would like to understand the error first before taking such steps. which will enable me to file a bug report that is helpful and might even contain a solution for other users encountering that problem
I did this (mailman, sarge to etch) upgrade without having this particular problem, though.
(another one, I got)
babilen then explore the problem in another partition.
ok, seems like i have to do some research on my own, as #mailman is dead…
hi t he newest debian release, what kernel version is used @ installation ?
2.6.18
The latest stable release ships with kernel 2.6.18
There are more recent kernels in the testing and unstable branches of Debian.
i’m trying to find out if mobo is supported
M2N32-SLI Premium
Asus
NVIDIA nForce® 590 SLI™ MCP
should be (might have a buggy bios but Asus should have fixed it by now)
(even then you could use no_timer_override (2.6.20+) or noapic
how can i add a location to my $PATH?
to all users…..
hello everybody
/etc/profile or /etc/environment
IgorSobreira, /etc/skel
igor, PATH=$PATH(separator)stuff or stuff(sep)$PATH maybe?
There *is* actually a command (shipped with mailman) that actually saves a list configuration.
(don’t know about subscriptions, though.)
Debian Etch… trying to get a Linksys WUSB54G working. google finds some pages saying to use the prism54 driver, others the rt2500 driver… loading the prism54 module doesn’t do anything, and using m-a to download, compile, and install the rt2500 module also does nothing… module loads, says
nothing, nothing in dmesg. any ideas?
it’s possible to make ghost on active partition ( with dd ) ?
if my computer if turn on if you prefer ..
ok, what is this magic command. i am doing an backup of just mailman related files right now
Let me see….
Does anybody remember the name of the command that you can use to see which dynlinked libaries binaries need ?
gargantua, ld
ldd
gargantua, or ldd
That would be config_list -o – listname
list.
tried installing hotplug, didn’t help… only thing shown in dmesg when you plug it in is the generic “new full speed usb device” messgae, and /etc/init.d/hotplug start doesn’t seem to even try loading a module for it.
thanks
And then, the same command with -i (fed with the output you got from -o) later, to get back all the parameters.
man config_list is short and helpful.
About members, list_members to get members out (on backup)
and add_members to get members in (on restore).
please turn that off
man pages exists, and are OK (not always the case… but well, I never wrote any, so I’ll just stay quiet, and thankful for those who do exist.
hi2all
were the last two things directed at garo?
ok, thanks for the help! that at least provides an upgrade path for me…. hope it works out in the end
hello everyone…i’m trying to install a minimal kvm (kernel virtualization machine) host, but I have no idea how to get a minimal X frontend or whether I actually need it…
Yes. Really hope that will help.
Tell us if it does.
hey everyone
hello
so far i have installed etch without selecting any software, then doing a dist-upgrade to unstable and installing kvm and qemu
By the way, web logs made available with script and cat -n ?
does anyone know of a tool that lets you see what ports are used by what processes?
maybe lsof can do this?
todd_ netstat or if you don’t mind risking nmap (had to reset a router after a scan once)
illo except nmap doesn’t tell you what process is behind that port does it?
todd it tries
just lsof -i
i’ll have to wait till later to try it. it has a bunch of dependencies and I can’t risk the live server with it right now
todd if the java server hosting is yours use lsof -i as h3sp4wn said
lsof should be on any system, i think
it’s pretty basic
I have a very barebones debian
I need to apt get it
ah, i just saw it’s not on mine either
so, todd, maybe you can help me with a minimal X server?
netstat -p as root
zagibu ?
don’t know what to install to get a minimal X server
i’d just like to be able to start virtual machines with qemu
i thought you might know, cause you have very barebones debian, too
aptitude install x-window-system xserver-xorg xfce4 xfonts-scalable xfonts-base xfonts-75dpi xfonts-100dpi
but use fluxbox instead of xfce4
fluxbox would be the window manager, eh?
yep
ok, thx, i’ll give it a try
can’t you just apt-get install xorg?
the machines i’m running don’t even have x installed
dunno todd_ that’s what worked for me
use ion2
ok so lsof and netstat both tell me about the processes running but neither show the relation between process and port(s)
netstat -pant (as root) and look in the last column
todd, i see ports listed in lsof and netstat (use -n?)
if you don’t give g++ any options and you compile something on a p4 does it compile for a p4 or a older arch ?
last column is the process, third column is the local address and port, fourth is the remote address and port
hi all how and where can i define just the locale LC_TIME ?
amethyst awesome thanks
i installed mailman from oldstable now, and put mailman on hold. this problems needs way more time tomorrow
-punta if you want UDP too
thanks again for your help.
You’re welcome.
Is it possible to create a virtual network interface? I need to create a virtual network within this machine for some hosted vms
and good luck for tomorrow’s upgrade
I think the default arch target is i386 unless a makefile changes it
or you specify it on the command line
brb.. reboot
thunderbird doesnt support http protocol to receive messages, just pop and imap. is there any that supports? My father cant access his hotmail account, since hotmail doesnt have a pop
look for the ‘hotway’ package
besides, hotmail not supporting neither pop nor imap in 2007 means it should not have the name mail in it.
or ‘gotmail’ to do it a slightly different way
oh wait, i recall it’s MS stuff. no easy way out as usual
oh wait, i recall it’s MS stuff. no easy way out as usual
“hotway can be configured to run with inetd” wtf?
xjkx, means automatic startup when network goes up, kinda.
but i dont want to be the server
i am the client
it’s a pop3 server that reads mail from hotmail
like a proxy
is gotmail like that too?
please turn that off
gotmail downloads the mail and delivers it to a local mailbox
xjkx, nothing bad in running a server into your machine. you do it for X.
thanks
The POP3-HTTPMail Gateway. Server on xxx active.
what do i do now?
you’re running it from the command line, or telnetting in to the pop3 port?
cmd line
with a normal user
hope gotmail is more intuitive
did you select for it to be managed automatically
?
\amethyst: i think
how to check for defected clusters in my hard disk ?
i answered yes to that question i showed, about inetd
try telnet localhost pop3 and see if it connects
can i do a netinstall with my usb modem???
you shouldn’t need to run it from the command line
man badblocks
also look at the program smartctl in the package smartmontools
smartctl asks the disk to check itself, while badblocks does the checking itself
\amethyst, what’s the difference between fsck and badblocks
he
One checks a filesystem, one checks a disk
heh
can i make a netinstall with my ueagle-atm firmware??
hai mister streuner
can i do a netinstall with my usb modem???
hi
did you read the latest bathroom-novel about BSD vs linux based hosting services (hint: Theo gloats over some wifi licencing issue)?
!netinstall
methinks netinst is a small CD or set of floppy images which installs Debian using an Internet connection. see http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst If you use a dialup connection, ask me about dialup install.
no, dont bother me too much with that…
modem? you mean dial up modem?
no usb adsl modem…Asus Aam6000ug..i’m using ueagle-atm
he critizes everything, and thats ok
Linux for a whole lot of things
well, I like neither by now
they deserve one another
i need to know if i can configure chap-secrets and pap-secrets manually by copying firmware to install a debian system
I only like Debian
debian++
Internal (PCI) ISDN cards and WLAN cards are not supported sorry!
this is what i thought i think
I installed debian like everyone here thanks, so can you
i can’t install i think with the netinstall
on Etch (the current stable) usb is supported, don’t know what old documentation you are reading
http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/#netinst-stable
i’m reading this
good night all
oh
Netinstalling is a pain anyway
\amethyst, any tool that can show in a graphic way the map of the disk with badblocks ?
\amethyst, i need to know how much badblocks i have
I take it you read i386?
no gnome with 1cd?? only kde and xfce i suppose
smartctl -a /dev/whatever should show how many blocks are physically bad instead of logically bad as the OS sees them
why can’t you net install?
cause i have a usb adsl modem
not ethernet
hm
why do you need gnome to use your modem?
when using tar –newer can “date” be any format of the date command?
no i’m just asking…cause i can’t install netinstall so maybe i can install 1cd version i thought…and i love gnome
gnome is for applications. adsl modems use drivers… they’re hardware…
so –newer `date +%F` will work just as well as any?
are you sure the net install won’t support your dsl modem?
hello guys. If I want to configure x11vnc to run when the gdm runs as greater, anyone has accomplish this?
CDs are not versions. they’re collections of parts of debian. you can add network sources, too, once you’ve set up the networking
and then you can install whatever other buggy crap you want so that you can complain that debian sucks
true that, you just install minimally from CD and the suck the other 99% from the network
I am trying to have the “x11vnc” application to run automatically after the gdm greater start.
hey
if i compile a C program in linux
like a simple C program that outputs some text
can it be run in windows
how do you open an .ods doc? my friend said he made it with oocalc but there is no oocalc in debian. when I run ooffice foo.ods it gives me a list of filters, but no choice looks like what I want: an oo spreadsheet
stiv2k you are a tool.
no
!find bin/oocalc
Debian Search of ‘bin/oocalc’ (1): (/usr/bin/oocalc) in editors/openoffice.org-calc.
how can i make it work
compile the same source in windows
ah
which part of NO you didn’t get?
eh? it’s there…
assuming that works
compile for windows, either on windows or cross-compile
how can i do that?
anyone here has experience using the x11vnc?\
cross-compile? use google
ok
i have to copy my ueagle-atm firmware and make some arrangements to install my usb modem…i’m not use if i can handle it?
cross compile for windows?
in ubuntu i was installing my modem fby copying firmware files
I think not
ah, openoffice.org-calc is the package. I was looking for oocalc. thanks
cygwin is an option (compiling the source in it, I mean)
rahul, Device does not support Self Test logging
you can cross-compile for amigaos, I don’t see why not windows
i mean i use linux
sorry, I didn’t mean that it was impossible, just that it’s like 50x more complicated than compiling in windows
but my proffessor runs our C programs on a windows machine
when using tar –newer can “date” be any format of the date command? (`date +%F` just as good as any?)
so i want to make them executeable in windows just to make sure it behaves as it should
your prof.should be interested in the CODE.
he shld be compiling them to check you haven’t cheated
yes i understand that
we are supposed to submit the SOURCE
this is not #windows…
but I want to run them in windows to make sure it behaves as it should when he runs them
omfg
im not asking a windows question
you are
yes, you are
tell him to buy you windows
get windows 98, get qemu
you are asking how to run C programs in windows
i _have_ windows but i _use_ linux
no i am not
and we don’t know how that should be debian related, anyway
i am asking how to compile a C program in LINUX so that i can execute in windows
you don’t
is php on debian compiled with the “PHP Crack extension”?
you could cross compile and test in wine
not easily, at least
well, that might give a false positive…
get cygwin, seriously. easiest option you have
debian has a toolchain builder..
you “have” windows so get the source and compile it with whatever your professor is using
wine isn’t exactly bug-free
Hi guys, I’m pretty new to debian. I’m running etch v4 and I would like to install the latest version of compiz fusion. I’m wondering if this could be possible using apt-get and the unstable repository or I’ll end up in a stable/unstable dependencies hell? thanx in advance
that’s why I suggested win98 and qemu
if your professor can’t compile strict ANSI C, well it’s HIS problem
or optionally, “msys” which is native gcc for windows
“Etch v4″ doesn’t make sense – you’re running Debian 4.0, aka “Etch”
upgrade all the way or not at all. testing exists as well.
rahul, any way to low-level format my hard disk ?
yes. true.
PerfDave right sorry
nettie : first of all. use aptitude it is the preferred installation method in etch.
not via an OS.
rahul, i think that will get me off my badblocks
he can, he uses dev C++
rahul, it’s from a livecd
which is GCC based
you need to follow what your hardware manuals tell you
ok
You don’t want to mix packages from stable and unstable. You might be able to “backport” (compile from source) the package on your stable system, /msg dpkg backports
your hard disk is on a live cd?
i guess i havent made myself very clear
so you should be able to crosscompile and generate the same executable
second: compiz is highly unstable and therefore not really advised to install
PerfDave thanx
rahul, no, my hard disk is in my laptop, and am running a live cd to do the checks …
I have windows. I can if i wanted to reboot and compile the source in windows using dev C++. However, being the linux user I am i’d prefer to not reboot and cross compile it here
great
you’ll need some sort of windows environment to test that executable actually works
it’s not “highly unstable”
as you will install it anyway.. what graphic chipset do you have?
yeah i know i’ll test it on my room mates laptop
any links or docs to do it?
babilen 945GM I bealive
I’m already runningn 915resolution
i would not let it touch any of my machines….
or just wine while you’re working and then reboot when you have a hand-in-ready product
I already configured xorg with the dri compiste and glx stuff old stable version works
why is that, I’m running it right now on 3 different boxes and it’s fine
ever hear of mingw? someone in another channel suggested it…
the point is that I would like to try some of the bleeding edge features and eyecandy of the new version
mingw/msys yes, it works quite well
mingw is gcc for windows
I’ll rather stay with openbox though but it looks so temptive
http://wiki.debian.org/Compiz might help
stiv2k you can talk about mingw in #windows, probably… they’ll know the flaws and benefits of it better than we do…
I thought the point was that you wanted to work in linux/debian?
thanx guys
yeah
or maybe there’s a specific #mingw channel
can i compile my shit in LINUX so it can execute in windows
yep
sweet
the executables come out a different size though
did all that
I don’t think you’re getting what he wants.. he can generate and test windows executables under debian just fine
oops sorry
didnt know 4 lines was considered a flood
I’m running the compiz-fusion git now, it’s more buggy than the previous compiz or beryl, but I’ve still had fairly few problems
it’s fine.. I’ll go trough the backport thing
but yeah
explody on sid or etch?
so what’s the big deal here?
both, actually
I had to use wine a lot at uni.. the eda stuff we used was windows only, the mcu sim windows only
though I upgraded the etch box to sid for unrelated reasons
note that there’s no guarantee that he’ll use mingw
explody do you have a compiz fusion etch repo? does anyone already backported it?
if you want “stable” for for the slightly older beryl
different compilers can be incompatible, so you’ll need to test using tghe compiler he uses in the end
compiz-fusion is going to be weirder, though it does look neat
yeah he’s already mentioned he uses dev C++… i just want to compile them for windows execution for my own testing purposes (to make sure i put the system(“PAUSE”) in the right places and stuff mostly….)
hi, with command can i read for example NR1.jpg to 01.jpg ?
