I have a multipart 7zip archive with two parts one ends in 7z001 and the other 7z002 When I run 7z x on the first
wesolek, change them all to say (hd0,1) instead of (hd0,0) which would be sda1 which you do not want
I’ve been having heating issues lately.. When I initially installed Gentoo I installed i8k utils to controll my fans from gkrellm. At some point while having the service run by default it was making the fans act weird. For example the fans would be set to automatic which is suppose to set the fans on full speed but it would seem to cause the fans to rev up and down constantly …
yea kinda sad im @ like 160 packages left, out of 270
Ok, now we have something. It’s telling me that it couldn’t bind to 127.0.0.1:9050
so I need to just change the (hd0,0) to (hd0,1)? grknight
GMouse, maybe that port is already taken?
wesolek,
netstat will tell
im using all the use flags with gnome-menus
grknight, reboot?
wesolek, after you change all 3.. you should be able to safely reboot
It shouldn’t be taken. The only thing that I can think of that would interfere is my firewall. But I have iptables following extremely lax rules for OUTPUT
wesolek, and don’t forget to pop out the CD
no no, it’s listening problem
GMouse, check netstat -t -n -l
thanks for telling me, I just changed all 2!!! lol just correcting my mistake
nada
050
wesolek, the first error 15 is the splash image
I know that, grknight
ok here it comes
yeah
Then I decided to turn off the service but left the plugin in gkrellm active and it works without the constant reving,
nie blueish screen
Just that the temp goes up
hi, – net-misc/ipv6calc-0.45 (masked by: missing keyword) what i must to do?
Checking privoxy returns an error that it couldn’t read /var/log/tor/config
I can’t believe!!! it’s actually doing something!!! like booting up I think!!!! monkeh, grknight
So I think if I fix tor, privoxy will work as well.
wesolek, you’ll just have to remember to use (hd0,1) in grub from now on
/etc/portage/package.mask
— Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.mask: net-misc/ipv6calc-0.45
another question
grknight, monkeh… hm, how to say that.. FATAL: couldn’t open some modules for wireless
wesolek, oops.. i think i found another error: “real_root=/dev/hda3″
in the mm1 patch of the vanilla kernel, CFS is included
they are 3 packet masked 0.45 0.50 0.51 i must add all?
upd when you use a version, u must use an = in front of the group
wesolek, that should be “real_root=/dev/sdb2″
sda2*
is it included by default or do you have to choose it in menuconfig?
I see that, grknight
let me change it
/etc/portage/package.mask
wesolek, fix that.. then reboot into the 2nd kernel.. that’s newer and probably where your wireless is
Ok, now this is interesting. Google tells me that the problem could be that the loopback device doesn’t exist. ifconfig confirms that.
lo doesn’t exist for some odd reason.
remember to clear the line without “=” in front
!!! (Did you specify a version but forget to prefix with ‘=’?)
GMouse, /etc/init.d/net.lo start
i clear it..
and don’t work
and add that to boot runlevel
oh no, it was saying sda2, that’s why it worked
pastie it please
wesolek, did you start the 1st or 2nd kernel on the list? the 2nd one is newer
ok booting to the newer kernel this time, grknight
File system couldn’t be fixed – that’s the message
and Give root password for maintenance
wesolek, you may be missing the correct fsck program
which filesystem is that?
astorm, that is way beyond my linux knowledge… I just followed the handbook
wesolek, a bit lousily I guess. log in as that root
wesolek, did you format it with mke2fs or something like mkreiserfs?
and type mount
no clue, grknight
I’m on it astorm
http://www.nomorepasting.com/getpaste.php?pasteid=1476 help
shoud i add all version?
ok astorm, it gave about 20 lines with info, anything particular you need?
upd, package.mask prevents installs not allows
welp, check the one with / in it
..
!earch ipv6calc
ipv6calc-0.45[0]: ipv6calc-0.50[0]: ipv6calc-0.51[0]: hppa ppc sparc x86
Ok! A little punching around on the CLI, and it all works! I don’t know why net.lo wasn’t on the startup list.
so what is solution?
do the echo thing to package.unmask
they all have / in it, astorm
sorry the mistakes
upd, whats your arch?
sorry welp, wesolek hmm, the one that has /, not /whatever
arch?
cooler, that’s wrong
cooler, no problem
what you mean?
tmpfs on / type tmpfs (rw) /dev/sda2 on / type ext3 (rw,data=ordered)
astorm
upd, edit /etc/portage/package.keywords and add “net-misc/ipv6calc **” to it
wesolek, check if you have e2fsprogs installed
to allow a MASKED package you also need to put it at package.unmask
how astorm?
wesolek, uhm, emerge e2fsprogs
damn it, where are the logs for this channel?
cooler, yes.. only if it’s masked by package.mask this is a keyword case
Evening everyone, I am new to gentoo but not to linux, i am most confortable with ubuntu and debian, but would like to try gentoo out after hearing much about it. Are there any good newbie guides for gentoo using either the min cd or live cd?
Stupid question…I finished installing kde…how do I start it?
hum
hi
startkde ?
or put startkde at .xinitrc and run startx
I’ve got an error while compiling kdelibs, anyone else experiencing problems with that ?
upd, add that line (without the quotes) and you’ll be able to merge
grknight, works THANKS YOU!
It says canot connect to x server
grknight, he should remove it from his package.mask as well
it said something about read only files in /var/log/emerge.log and some other stuff, astorm
oh
he must’ve removed it
wesolek, heh, forgot about one thing then
wesolek, mount -o remount,rw /
Aeudian, don’t use the installer is tip#1.. use the handbook
then try again
mzbot, teach Aeudian handbook
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
installer meaning live cd?
ok astorm
lol wow I feel stupid
Feel free to hit me
The only pages google can find with both your any my nicks on it is the log for this channel.\
Aeudian, you can use the livecd if you want a nice way to browse.. just don’t use the installer program on it
- ken tyep
Aeudian, basically the minimal is just that… no xorg, all console
Aeudian, the livecd adds xorg, firefox and other goodies
I think it remounted that partition, astorm
wesolek, now try that emerge again
DrChandra, hmm….I see that. Then I try going up in the URL to just the gentoo directory and I only see 2006 stuff
do I need to be connected to the internet for that? astorm
wesolek, if you have it installed already, then no
but other than that, maybe
it looks like it’s not… it says: couldn’t download
for that to work
like /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
Nothing newer?
what is the proper way to exit xorg ? ctrl+alt+backspace seems brutal
DrChandra, didn’t see it
anyway….I asked a question and had to leave.
ok let me do it… unfortunately the wire is downstairs… brb
i just installed gentoo but after trying booting into i’m greeted with this “Calling quiesce …returning 0×01400000 from prom_init” on forums i have read that frame buffer is the cause of it, i have tried the suggestion made on there and also i have followed installion handbook without missing a step, I’m on ppc64, I would appreciate any help
close all programs that are running in it. if that’s done and it’s still running, then ctrl_alt_backspace will do absolutely no harm.
ok, then i need to figure out how to exit the wm, thanks
Looks like all the channels ended June 18th, 2006.
it won’t start it, astorm
What are you looking for?
usually if the script that starts things is in ~/.xinitrc killing the last started one (usually wm) will end X.
what wm?
ion3
I have about 8.5 hours right now.
I just asked if anyone used AWN
oh. don’t know how to exit it. sorry.
cannot run net.eth0 until sysinit completes
wesolek, do what you have to, then, to get the internet access
astorm
np, thanks for your help
it might be easier to start the livecd
and then mount and chroot like in the handbook
does anyone know the default location for sound devices in /dev/? (trying to get sound working in vmware)
I think you’re right… astorm, brb
I see no replies.
DrChandra, thanks
Hi there!
No mentions of AWN, either, except for yours.
hmm, okay
anyone has any suggestions for solving the “Calling quiesce …returning 0×01400000 from prom_init” boot error ?
it’s in the wm menu, by pressing f12 (just letting you know)
Hi. I have a problem with grub/gentoo fresh install. Same HD, i have windows (partition 1), swap (partition 2) and ext3 (partion 3) with gentoo. My devices are sda1/2/3 respectively. I have in grub.conf root(hd0,2) kernel /boot/kernel root=/dev/sda3, and the kernel will begin to boot, but it iwll complain it cant mount the root FS. It says something about VMS/floppy, so i hit enter and, it says i have hd1/3 available
Any help or experiance with this would be appreciated
When I ’startx’ it boots to a gui with three root bashes and when I start kde it looks really…primitive.
I can’t even do that, astorm
Is it supposed to look like that?
glibc-2.6 does not actually support the nptl USE flag?
I tried to start the eth.0 and it gave me the same error as when booting up the system normally
this is crazy
wesolek, hmm
maybe your network provider is being funny
I don’t think I am strong enough to keep going
check /etc/resolv.conf
nope, it was fine yesterday
and /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf
hmm
it rebooted now…. waiting to do it again
your ISP is acting evil
believe me, that’s not it
thanks
my secure linux web hosting is acting evil
lol
is the default 512MB for an 80gb drive good for swap? i have never configured the partitions for linux ever, 512MB is what gentoo guide recommands
yea
depends on what you’re going to do with system, but that’s usually enough.
typical stuff, no gaming, maybe gui later on and some services
is it bad to go with 1GB?
it’s fine
wesolek, well, you just forgot to install filesystem utilities – missed one step in the handbook
correct me if i am wrong, but swap is like a page file in windows? you dont want to much or to little? i have 1.5GB in memory
hi, just installed gentoo (using the handbook) and when I reboot my GRUB starts but does not give me the OS’s I specified in my config file, it just has a “grub” command line. I have a seperate boot partition (hda5). You think maybe it’s not reading the config file?
can we still do it now? astorm?
algun sevillano
wesolek, yes, if you get all needed files or network connection up
I will go downstairs to emerge it… maybe it’ll pick it up
the easiest way would be to start as if you were installing
yep
do I need to do anything else other than emerge? while I am connected
pues que bien
wesolek, I don’t think so
ok brb then
ok back… emerged
astorm
wesolek, now it should boot
do I need to install it or something?
well, emerge == installation
IMPORTANT: 2 config files in /etc need updating
but it doesn’t say what files
should I just ignore it astorm?
wesolek, use etc-update
gentoo 4tw?
or dispatch-conf
ok I think I’ve done it… reboot now? astorm
wesolek, why not
astorm… same error
wesolek, weird
maybe check your /etc/fstab
if it’s correct
but I don’t know what device and I know that the 8139too module doen’t work on this laptop
that’s why I can’t just simply use a live cd
cos it loads this bloody module!!!!
okay pleaes don’t yell at us
I hate to say that, but it looks like I will have to apologise to windows astorm
unless anybody’s got any idea how to load a live cd without the 8139too module…..
wesolek, hmm, nodetect should work
gentoo prompt
but I wonder if you’ll be able to get networking up w/o network card driver
but then I will end up with what I had before… no hardware working
hm
I wonder why 8139too doesn’t work
no, I tried that too… loading 8139cp didn’t do the trick
any OOPS message, or just networking doesn’t work?
it’s this bloody lan card they put in this laptop
it’s probably not 8139too
lspci will tell you
it is
could you paste here that one line from lspci about that card?
(Ethernet controller)
it won’t tell anything cos as soon as you try to load the module, it hangs and only holding down the power button is a remedy
sounds really bad
try booting with nodetect, then run that lspci
btw, what kind of laptop it is?
it’s a philips laptop
freevents X55
just type gentoo nodetect?
I can do it manually by entering the interactive mode and skipping autoconfig… is that the same?
astorm
monkeh are you still around?
wesolek, yes, the same
wait… I pasted my lspci yesterday
http://rafb.net/p/oSQjzd75.html
there astorm
wesolek, 404
that’s why rafb.net sucks
I suggest pastebin.com or pastebin.ca
????
oh ok
let me copy it for you
http://pastebin.com/m48a8b2e6
astorm, I just don’t know why I pasted first 24 lines…. look at 25-on
Hmm, it’s a normal realtek
which livecd are you using?
BTW, you can use almost any
Knoppix is known to work well
2007.0 but it doesn’t matter, I tried, ubuntu (3 different distributions), suse, and gentoo… they all do the same
i am following the gentoo handbook, and im on the part where i must download gentoo stage3, but i seem to get my download stalled/stoped around 7-9mb into the download, i have tried 5 differnet mirrors and all seem to stop, i am downloading the files to /mnt/gentoo just like the guide says and with the default partition sizes
wesolek, weird, sounds like a hardware problem
Try using wget
oh… knopix didn’t work either
well… windows was ok
anyone did HOWTO XMMS2?
You’re very unlucky it seems
probably buggy hardware
yeah, if knoppix isn’t working, I’d definitely say issues with your hardware (whether NIC, router, or hard drive)
with bugs being worked around in windows drivers
would be of much interest to certain developers
and when I managed to delete this module as soon as ubuntu unzipped it, the instalation went fine, only my lan never worked
I don’t know what is exactly wrong, but it’d be good to check the magic sysrq keys
if these work
rakeyry will do, is the digests file on the servers the md5 file to compare too?
it’s alt+printscreen+some letter
You be the judge
figured as much =P
nothing works once it starts loading this module
astorm… just by looking at my lspci, can you tell me what modules I need to install, I guess I could do it manually
some here use pppoe-start
?
live cd has booted up now
That’s a start.
i got this error while i was compiling firefox
please have a look at it
wesolek, well, it looks like you should use 8139too, but… :/
maybe your card has broken PIO or MMIO
there is an option for that in the kernel
i cant use that, i tried with root #pppoe-start andsay only root can use that not found /bin/id
rakeyry, only without autoconfig I even managed to start the xserver (but only on vesa driver)
is there? astorm?
*
yes, but I don’t know whether that’s switchable from the kernel command line
huh?
you could try noapic option first
Command Line Interface is all you need…
APICs tend to be broken
there ?
and then, if that fails or works, irq=poll
rakeyry… I love my wobbly windows lol that’s the only reason I want it on my laptop
lol
bdf“`: needs more info… post the entire emerge output if possible
How do I unmask an ebuild which has KEYWORDS=”"?
astorm, do you want me to reboot it again????
wesolek, mhm
nDuff, **
o.o A waste if you ask me.
damn. astorm… lol
oo? rakeyry?
thank you.
I use dwm.
does anyone know if an svn checkout dies half way through, can it pick up where it left off?
rakeyry, I have no idea what you are saying… oo and dwm doesn’t tell me anything
in CUPS, it insists that my parallel port is busy — is there any way to “force” it to be free again?
without rebooting that is
sometimes, but you may need to prune bits. the working tree library is probably the ugliest, most hackish code in svn.
i was trying to install firefox and it gave me this error please have a look at it http://pastebin.ca/622738
“no” is really the easier answer to that question.
dwm – http://dwm.suckless.org/
bdf“`: again, thats not enough info, post the entire emerge output if possible, or then, post the most of it you can.
gentoo noapic ???? or gentoo noacpi??? and btw, I’ve done it too with gentoo acpi=off, astorm
sure give me two mins
wesolek, the first one
damn, somebody misspelled it last night, and maybe that’s why it didn’t work???
and leave it to load itself?
wesolek, no, it’s another option
yes, leave it to load
Yeah Linux doesn’t handle typos well
rakeyry, it’s not a typo – it’s another option
O
thanks astorm
h
gentoo noload=8139too – but it didn’t work
On the following page http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_AIGLX#Installing_AIGLX I have just ‘emerge –sync –newuse world’ and it tells me to type glxinfo | grep direct I’m getting ‘bash: glxinfo: command not found’
i have tried to copy as much as i could
sorry… didn’t work Kernel panic – not syncing: CPU context corrupt – so the same as before
Was I suppose to emerge something else as well?
Nod-ubuntu, did you install mesa?
and it’s hanging… let me try that other thing you said
astorm
No I have not installed Mesa. Am I suppose to?
Nod-ubuntu, install mesa
wesolek, irq=poll
Simple as ‘emerge mesa’ ?
Yes
Well
Nod-ubuntu, more specifically mesa-progs
compiz fusion is unstable?
Nod-ubuntu, but those depend on mesa I believe
So which is it? ‘emerge mesa’ or ‘emerge mesa-progs’ ?
Nod-ubuntu, try emerge mesa mesa-progs
please?
bdf“`: type equery uses mozilla-firefox and paste the output
I tried installing my system from where I had the live cd started with no autoconfig, and it asked me for modules that I want to have installed… can I just install everything except for the 8139too? and then when it’s all up and running focus on my LAN?
astorm
alright
nope astorm, this one didn’t work either, same kernel panic
[ Searching for packages matching mozilla-firefox... ]
!!! No matching packages found for “mozilla-firefox”
bdf“`: … ?
wesolek, so, it’s a kernel panic
Is there any way to clear out all of my kernel setting and start all over
bdf“`: uhm, then type emerge -pv mozilla-firefox and paste the ebuild line for me (in a pastebin)
ok
could you copy the output? Digital photos are ok
well this system says so… not always though… I guess depends on it’s mood, but it hangs absolutely
hold on… I think I can do this
Anyone know if there is a way to start with a fresh kernel, i used genkernel and have way to muach clutter in my kernel
make mrproper
wipes the config and everything
astorm, I wll just do it again so there there is no linux graphic window – more to see
Thank you
do you have any other option you want to try, may as well as need to boot it up again
astorm
wesolek, I’m out of ideas for now
bdf“`: “mozilla-frefox”?
btw it says if you want help , post the topmost build error where should i post it anyways
yea mozilla-firefox
bdf“`: read it again “mozilla-frefox”
ok
anyone beable to get wx.net running on gentoo?
bdf“`: “frefox”?
not sure you’ll be able to read any of it
When you are following the documentation for setting up your kernel and its telling you what to have selected. Does that mean you can untick everything else? IE: Psiedo filesystems for example, it only has 2 items ticked out of the default 4 things that mrproper has ticked.
sorry here is the new one ! http://pastebin.ca/622765
/etc/portage/package.us)
emerge -pv mozilla-firefox
bdf“`: .use?
bdf“`: if the filename was wrong, it *could* be it, but not probably
bdf“`: “-java”, yea, its wrong..
no Skankerpotimous that i gave after it finished
i gave env USE=”java” emerge mozilla-firefox
bdf“`: dont do that
ok ok , then what should i do ?
/etc/portage/package.use
bdf“`: then run env-update && source /etc/profile
Is “[*] Use PCI DMA by default when available” now called something else, I am not seeing it
bdf“`: then try emerging firefox again
ok wait a sec
anyone ever done a remote install / got any docs i can look at?
ever did a stage3 manual install ?
what do you mean by ‘manual’ ? i have done stage3 a lot
has “Enable DMA only for disks” Replaced “[*] Use PCI DMA by default when available” ??
what kind of “remote install”? kicking off an installation via netbooting? doing a fully unattended installation?
i have a running centos server, i want to replace it (dont care about config etc.) with gentoo, then rebuild from scratch
Anyone?
partition and then download and untar stage3, portage snapshot etc, etc …
ahh. what does your hard drive situation look like? If you can use a completely separate partition to stage into, that’s ideal.
no idea, that sort of thing would be in kernel mailing list archives, changelogs or someplace equally obscure though
You dont need to enable dma?
this could be the issue http://pastebin.ca/622772
ideally, you’ll be on LVM or somesuch, so there’s no rebooting needed to put updated partition tables into effect &c.
my partitions are basically 2 x 250GB disks RAIDed together, then a seperate boot partition (also raided)
it’s easy enough to find out; look up what the .config option is for both old and new kernels.
two physical disks but two ‘md’ volumes spanning them
bdf“`: maybe, then wait a sec
what can’t you do remotely ?
ok
astorm.. ok I got the pic, where do you want me to send it to?
it’s not the best pic, but I think it’ll be ok
well i want to install gentoo, basically i need to untar the stage3 tarball and portage, set up grub, re-install grub, then reboot the server remotely
i can ssh in to the centos system already
wesolek, hm, imageshack will work
if you keep your existing boot partition, no need for grub installation afaik
imageshack.com?
wesolek, yes
i would just untar stage3 and portage-snapshot, chroot, compile a kernel, add sshd to default runlevel, setup root password and add an entry to grub menu.lst …
maybe it’s better if i change the root partition .. do you know if there’s a tool so that i can resize my 250gb disk’s RAID volume (/’) while running? if not then i guess i’ll have to remove one disk from it, and create a single-disk new root partition… ?
i’m thinking a clean new root partition would be ideal
no LVM running on top of that RAID device, then, I take it. Makes things a little trickier unless you have an initrd you can boot into which will be immediately net-accessible (in which case you’ll be able to repartition and have it take immediate effect, and do other Useful Things).
i don’t know, but i would try to boot from a rescue system and just empty the partitions …. and keep the partitionning, if you hadn’t any problem with it, there shouldn’t be any need touching it
Out of curiousity should VLC running in screen A of a non-xinerama dual head setup be able to full screen video onto screen B?
taking the time to build an initrd which will start up sshd with a preset root password will make the rest of your life easier wrt the project. test it locally (maybe in a qemu image) to be sure it’ll actually work before you run the risk of rebooting your real apache geronimo server hosting into it.
bdf“`: id recommend creating a bug at bugzilla, i cant seem to run emerge too, it fails to download the patches tarball.
bdf“`: and sorry, now i gtg, cya later
sure thanks alot
good suggestion, thanks. is there a small bootable net-accessible disk image you can recommend?
do I need to register there? astorm?
Hmm, I don’t know
not off the top of my head. I’ve been doing a bunch of playing with catalyst, so I’m in a decent position to be able to make one… but I don’t know of any prebuilt.
rebooting
Actually, just sending this pic by email to me should work
speaking of which… how much trouble will it be if this server gets into a horked/non-net-accessible state? it’s pretty easy to goof up in ways that cause that result.
(if i understood right?) i cant reboot to a rescue system as i dont have local access to select it…
I can send it to kernel devs just fine
astralstorm@gmail.com
not a huge trouble, i have tipped off the hosting provider, they will be able to get it back to ssh-able
cool.
just cost me ~US$40 hehe
ahh.
prefer not to pay that if possible
lucky for some! where do you live? my server is NY, i live in .cn, but i’m in .au now (where i’m from / grew up)
I’m in austin.tx.us
oil country! i guess the gas is cheap there
so i have this issuse not sure how it came to be , i updated net.eth0 with etc-update and now i cant seem to get eth0 up
i can ifconfig eth0 up but it doesnt connect
http://www.yourhostedimages.com/images/wesolek/dscf0051.jpg and http://www.yourhostedimages.com/images/wesolek/dscf0048.jpg astorm
it acts like it doesnt know what $IFACE is
this is a known issuse or can someone offer any advice
heh… by a lot of standards, yes. compared to the rest of .tx.us it’s expensive — but other texans think Austin land prices are expensive too; coming from .ca.us, I think they’re dirt cheap.
at boot it just says bring up …….. not bring up eth0
there are 2, hopefully you can see something on them, astorm
wesolek, yes, but it won’t tell anyone much
sydney real estate is really expensive… maybe not for americans, but for everyone here it is
it’s basically a CPU exception
lol I thought there were just for you
I’ve done mesa mesa-progs.
anyway i might ask them if they can put a cdrom in and start an ssh server so i can do a remote-install that way instead, might save time / be lower-risk
noone can offer any advice?
Nod-ubuntu, now glxinfo | grep direct
that’d be easier, yes.
wesolek, hmm, does the same happen with nodetect when you load 8139too?
Do I need to configure anything from this ? http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
what am I supposed to do now? I tried to file a bug report once and it came back to me as I didn’t do it right…
Nod-ubuntu, not yet
Such as the videocard drivers and input devices?
Okay
wesolek, ^
Nod-ubuntu, this simply checks to see if you have direct rendering going
Error: unable to open display (null)
astorm, when you just try to load 8139 it hangs… without producing any line of comment
Nod-ubuntu, do have X running?
anyone know if g15tools supports the g11 as well? the ebuilds don’t say
I dont believe so.
I’m in CLI – fresh install of gentoo minimal cd
Nod-ubuntu, so you’re running it from the terminal?
Yeppers
with the live cd it at least makes it to show the error before it hangs lol… but there are times it won’t make it lol
when i ran the command: “make clean && make && make && make modules_install” the first line read awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file ‘/usr….. for reading
Nod-ubuntu, you have to start X and then issue the command
How can I make sure I even have X installed?
minor723_2 what are you trying to compile host what kernel?
Nod-ubuntu, try startx
Attempting.
2.6.21-gentoo-r4
bash: startx: command not found
all you need to do is make && make modules_install
emerge x?
wesolek, hmm
Isn’t that part of xorg-server?
I will try that, thank you
probably the comment goes to the syslog
astorm, can I find a list of modules needed for my lspci? I’ll give it a go
Nod-ubuntu, I suggest you simply emerge KDE, Gnome, or Xfce4
so i have this issuse not sure how it came to be , i updated net.eth0 with etc-update and now i cant seem to get eth0 up
Nod-ubuntu: the bare minimum is emerge xorg-server, but most emerge xorg-x11 which includes xorg-server as a dependency
it acts like it doesnt know what $IFACE is
wesolek, I can tell you what you need
what is it then?
but then, the problem is with the machine – it’s buggy and needs a kernel quirk most likely
Nod-ubuntu, that might take a little longer, but it gives you more features, and more friendly environment
mzbot, gentoo Nod-ubuntu xorg modular
I preformed a ‘emerge xord-x11 already. Am I suppose to ‘emerge kde’ now?
Nod-ubuntu: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml
Nod-ubuntu: do you really want kde?
dwm! FTW!
I’d try anyway, astorm
I have emerged java, but when I run javac I get an error that says * javac is not available for sun-jre-bin-1.6 on i686, can anyone help me get javac working?
Yes, I don’t have a problem using it. It was suggested last night to me by like 6 people
Nod-ubuntu: emerge kde-meta
I’ve wasted so much time on it, 2 hours more won’t make any difference
Thank you
astorm
I always installed e16 first so I could use graphical programs while KDE built
8139too uhci_hcd ehci_hcd hda-intel
and of course proper SATA support built in
mzbot, gentoo Nod-ubuntu kde-meta
Nod-ubuntu: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/draft/complete/handbook.xml?style=printable&part=1&chap=4
argh
Hello. I would like to talk to someone for some questions regarding Gentoo. I am a windows user who would liket o start using Gentoo despite it’s reputation for being difficult because I would like to sincerely learn linux host through using it.
wesolek, wait, I have another idea for a kernel commandline option
mzbot, gentoo Nod-ubuntu kde
Nod-ubuntu: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml
ok
what’s the question?
sonokamome, it’s got one hell of a learning curve, but if you like that sort of challenge it’s incredibly satisfying
wesolek, pci=routeirq
Well I would like to know if there is a LiveCd that I can use to test out Gentoo if possible?
what do you mean by proper sata support built in?
what’s the diffference between berkdb and fsfs for running an SVN server?
Gentoo is a ‘meta-distribution’
please explain.
there are no ‘default’ packages installed
you choose what you want to put in
ok booting up….. astorm
bdb… is kind of… volatile.
sonokamome, Not really. I’d say find a few days when you can be comfortable reading docs and playing around with the computer, download a Knoppix ISO and a Stage3 tarball and dive in. That’s how I did it.
dude this is killingme i gota get some help
I see.
is it possible to completely remove the panel?
So far I have yet to try Ubuntu and Fedora Core
slaytanic is the contension between them a speed thing? a who came first thing? the wikinode is really vague on this
wesolek, one more thing – boot the machine w/o detection, and paste dmesg output on some pastebin
bdb came first. I doubt you’ll see any speed diference.
slaytanic so you’d reccomend fsfs for stablitiy’s sake?
So I guess I should do that first and get used to the environment and terminal use before considering Gentoo then.
indeed.
so i have this issuse not sure how it came to be , i updated net.eth0 with etc-update and now i cant seem to get eth0 up it acts like it doesnt know what $IFACE is wheni boot up any it trys to start the network it says “Bring up ……… ok instead of bring up net.eth0
same kernel panic astorm
it is straightforward to install if you read the Gentoo handbook thoroughly, with the Gentoo wiki for any other questions
wesolek, hmm, give me that dmesg output then
I see
ok hold on… astorm
sonokamome, I switched from Fedora to Gentoo back when Fedora was only on Core 4. I used Ubuntu for about a week in between the two. Fedora’s a way better learning distro than Ubuntu I think.
wesolek, you might be able to boot with nrcpus=1, but that will disable the second core
friendly12345, speak for yourself, it took me 3 tries to build a kernel that booted.
and it means the mainboard is buggy as hell
So there is no LiveCd to test out then? That’s alright I will try out something and stick with it until I get used to it. Then, I will jump into Gentoo since I have heard good things about it. Again I really do want to learn linux
do you think this is the processor?
can’t say that I built the kernel the first time either, but the kernel faq on the forum indicated what to do
anyone know of an overlay gimpshop 2.2.11 ebuild would be in?
if i recompile my kermel will i have to do anything to X11 or kde?
no
wesolek, no, buggy mainboard
sonokamome, that’s definitely the way to look at it. A friend of mine always used to tell me that if you wanted to learn how to use a distro, use that distro…but if you wanted to learn linux you should use Gentoo.
maybe reinstall your graphic drivers
who wants to try to give me some adive :0
Yeah I was trying to get the Opengl screen savers to work and they would not
no
I must not have something working correctly
What’re you telling the poor guy to do to his kernel now?
do I need the xserver?
Direct Rendering may or may not be affected though
vantage, you could always try deleting net.eth0 and then emerge baselayout
Monkeh, I’m trying to get his dmesg output now
lol monkeh….
I already gave him a working kernel
Monkeh, btw, do you per chance know, what is broken there?
Minimal, but bootable and functional
okay
With it locking up due to 8139too?
w/o 8139too, yep?
thank you friendly
No, with.
sloloem what else is included in baselayout will it mess up other configuration files?
how do you burn a music CD with the gnome CD/DVD burner?
Monkeh, yes, could you tell?
It’s a simple kernel option. PIO instead of MMIO. One of the 8139too options.
I will have to compile twice i believe
ahha
monkeh, and I can’t get the system to start up I knew I’d screw it up
what I did suspect, broken MMIO
wesolek, hmm, you’re a bit out of luck
Which is set in the kernel I gave him, the config of which should be used for any other kernel
you need to replace the module
I am going to try to use gensplash, but it told me i had to compile first
and thank you sololme
later
which will be a tiny bit harder now that you don’t have a network connection
vantage, looks like all the basic stuff in /etc, /lib/rcscripts, some other junk. You could run equery f baselayout and look for yourself if you have baselayout
He cam just boot off the CD I made for him..
COULD someone be kinda enough to show me there /etc/init.d/net.eth0 and /etc/conf.d/net im almost postive its notthe net configu cause it should work if oneisnt present
wesolek, hmm, so why not use it?
I did
sloloem where is $IFACE defind?
vantage, /etc/conf.d/net.example
read it
i know
i have….
w/o any config file, it should use dhcp
wesolek, well, where does it fail then?
yea thats what i said
is it possible to change distros once installed?
the system on hdd?
yes
brandon_, hmm, very hard
let’s now reboot, astorm
wesolek, where does it fail? Boot from hdd, or the livecd?
ahha
now boot from the hdd
so the system from hdd fails
you have to boot the livecd and reconfigure the kernel on hdd
Astorm wanna do me a favor
to twiddle the option
vantage, why not
I can paste my config
can you paste your /etc/ ahah thanks
(sans wlan password)
What, you’re using WEP?
init.d/net.eth0
astorm… I simply don’t know how to do that…. do you want that dmesg output?
vantage, http://pastebin.ca/622793
vantage, /etc/init.d/net.eth0 should be linked to net.lo
like this:
Wow if you configure your kernel yourself it compiles so much faster!
ln -s /etc/init.d/net.lo /etc/init.d/net.eth0
ok guys… thanks a lot for your help and sorry for wasting your time… I need to go to bed now
thanks
wesolek, uhm, I don’t need it
check out genkernel documentation
there is an option to use menuconfig with it
there, I can tell you which option to change
Pff, no need to use genkernel
anyone know why when i try to digest an ebuild it won’t get the version # right to fetch the package?
Monkeh, uhm, he does it teh handbook way ;P
He just needs to take the config off my kernel and add any needed bits (SDHCI etc)
Monkeh, or just tweak the PIO option in the default genkernel config
I used genkernel the first time and it took a very long time i just did it manual and man its so freaking fast
ASTORM i was kinda hoping for /etc/init.d/net.eth0 but i have a feeling its gunna be the same it only messed up when i updated it with etc-update
genkernel is bloated and annoying, vs my perfectly working kernel which just needs a few thigns added
vantage, you should link it to net.lo
jesus
Monkeh, … Kernel that loads just what it needs isn’t bloated
it might be slower too boot though
does there exist a simple, semi-intelligent, multiplatform file synchronisation tool?
*to
Yeah, and it takes ages to compile
adante, yep, rsync
There are literally hundreds of drivers in the kernel, and genkernel builds them all. Only a handful apply to each machine.
I know, still, it’s newbie-friendly
astorm yea im gunna give that a try , im at a friends house cause the was teh only comp on my network at he moment
so no one knows about ebuilds?
sheesh
hm?
why when i try to digest an ebuild it won’t get the version # right to fetch the package?
I like newbie friendly things
Correction: You got the version wrong
craptasm, my firefox won’t start
is rsync able to stop if the same files have been edited independently?
pastebin the ebuild.
adante, uhm, no
astorm i still dont think thats the problem because ive tried to start net.lo to it just doesnt recognize net.eth0
it’s not for collaboration
k, 1 sec
you want some svn, git, or other RCS
it’s actually just not outputting it in the wget
vantage, not start
symlink
i don’t want full blown version control
hey guys, is it possible that mandriva distr. would work? or it doesn’t matter what I try to load?
I gave you the command even
Any distro with the right kernel option set will work.
That is not many.
wesolek, uhm, you just need to fix the kernel
yea i know to link files okay ill go home and give it a shot thanks
just something between, which seems closer to synchronisation than a repos
Should I upgrade to the 2.6.22 (~x86) series on my laptop?
wesolek, it should be possible to fix it from livecd
either manually, or with genkernel
Not unless it has something you’ll benefit from
http://rafb.net/p/tGVgir94.html
astorm, monkeh did it for me last night, I have no clue how to do it on my own
will, you can try it, why not
wesolek, hmm, there is a howto on gentoo.org for that
I loaded genkernel, but there were so many options, I just don’t know these things so I left it as it was
will, shouldn’t break – and you don’t have to remove the previous version
wesolek, ah, I can tell you which option to switch
it’s just one that prevents the boot
Out of curiousity should VLC running in screen A of a non-xinerama dual head setup be able to full screen video onto screen B?
it’s starts booting up, but then it says something about a wrong format or something like that
wesolek, hmm?
I would like to use uvesafb, but I also don’t know how much I’d have to re-emerge (laptop-mode-tools, hdapsd, tpctl)
hold on, let me boot up from the hdd
is uvesafb the new user one?
aint it slower than h/w ?
uvesafb sounds like… GREAT NEWS
why didn’t I hear about it earlier?
now my hosting provider suggests doing the gentoo install from a minimal centos install
well that was the problem I came here with tonight
hello how can i configure the keys on my keyboard (volume up, down, mute, etc etc) with kde?
anything you see?
Gimme a minute
but I guess it drifted off somewhere else by the time you joined in, astorm
heh.
wesolek, it’s probably wrong /etc/fstab
you actually could do it from your full centos install, if you’re willing to get a bit funky with the RAID configuration.
it’s a RAID-1, right?
yeah i’m mailing them back about the RAID .. thats my only concern
RAID-mirror whatever that is
I have all of my HW working (acpi, cpufreq, hw acceleration, sleep, wireless, etc), I assume a new kernel version will break this?
astorm
and then that the file system couldn’t be fix – astorm… let me run the newer kernel
good. force one of the drives out of the array; partition it, set it up with its own separate RAID-1 device (with the other drive, which will still keep CentOS on it during the install process, marked as missing) marked as missing; do your whole gentoo setup on the new drive, boot onto it, and after you’ve done that successfully, add the CentOS drive to the mirror with the Gentoo on.
s/on.$/one./
wesolek, you really have to modify /etc/fstab as it should be
it’s somehow broken on your machine
good idea
that is not surprizing at all
Out of curiousity should VLC running in screen A of a non-xinerama dual head setup be able to full screen video onto screen B?
should I boot up monkeh’s cd and then mount the / drive? and chroot?
astorm
wesolek, yep
I’ll give it a go then
Could you put that ebuild somewhere which doesn’t screw it up?
nm i got it working somehow
errr, or i thought i did
where should i paste it?
You don’t want to paste.
wahts a small program
I can test distcc with eemrge
to make sure its workiong properly?
?
Just one more question, after i recompile a kernel, I just want to know what other commands i need to do? I have to add the modules to the make.conf and thats it? Do i have to change grub at all?
You need to upload it somewhere.
Is there a way to control an ATI card’s fan speed much like you can control an NVidia card’s using nvclock?
ok I’m in, astorm
http://www.speedyshare.com/993871629.html\
http://www.speedyshare.com/993871629.html
Works fine.
astorm, can you help me modify it?
it’s not here… wth
I see it’s not right
4 (348.01 KB/s) – `/usr/portage/distfiles/gimpshop-2.2.11.tar.bz2′ saved
wesolek, well, change the /dev/ROOT to your / device
the same which you have mounted to get there
set the filesystem correctly too
did you compile the kernel with genkernel?
(it’s most likely ext3)
it fails with this: http://rafb.net/p/XSAGqg63.html
I have a multipart 7zip archive with two parts, one ends in .7z.001 and the other .7z.002. When I run “7z x” on the first one though, the resulting file is a corrupt .7z file that can’t be read. It should extract a .iso fiile though! How can I get my .iso out of the two-part 7-zip archive?
see how the pkg name and the versin are completely missing?
wtf?
astorm, should I leave it noauto,noatime ???? and some strange numbers? 1 2 or 0 1???
I’l kicking myself for not knowign about module-rebuild populate…
something is very wrong on your end. It works here (though that file is nowhere to be found)
all my other custom ebuilds and portage ebuilds work fine
wesolek, yes, you can
the numbers are required
Well whatever ebuild you just sent me is not the one you’re using.
does it mean anything? astorm?
whats a small app? i can test out
sendmail help please. I’ve got a sendmail running off my localhost. When I try to sent a message by telnetting to the localhost 25, it works.
distcc?
yeah it is, i even downloaded the one i sent you just in case
wesolek, of course, they do
man fstab will tell you
but when I use “mail -s” it doesn’t work.
can someone give me the iso download that would work the same as i386?
The line to download the gimp-help tarball is commented out in the ebuild you sent me..
will it mount as it is? astorm?
yeah, that’s cuz i commented it out
….
wesolek, maybe
cuz it wasn’t working on either of them
Which means it won’t try to fetch the file, and it thus works fine.
If you uncomment it.. it just tries to fetch a file which doesn’t exist
I can’t tell without seeing it
lol astorm, can I just type auto to all of them? except the swap
Downloading ‘http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/misc/grafik/gimp/gimp/help/testing/gimp-help-2-0.9.tar.gz‘
yeah, but with it commented, it won’t
with or without, it’s not working here
It works fine with it commented.
If you uncomment it, you’ll have to point it to a file which exists.
Can someone get me a correct link to i386 gentoo?
shm /dev/shm tmpfs ……. should I leave it?
should be comments explaining it
and yes, if you don’t understand something, it’s generally best host to leave it alone
reisio… then I probably shouldn’t be installing linux at all
hi all, this is my first time configureing a wireless ethernet card. lspci shows the device, however iwconfig says that eth0 (wired), lo, and sit0 have no wireless extensions. I’m not sure that all this means
let’s not get silly :p
wesolek, should work, yes
I am serious… I can’t get it to work
check that fstab 3 times
the /dev/… entries should be correct
TheLorax, You probably don’t have drivers for it.
quinton_, What do you mean?
how can you copy and paste in a putty shell?
app-misc/screen
well… like i need a 32 bit install for gentoo?
+hlieberman, yeah most likely. I didn’t install any, just started the wireless howto. Are the drivers in the kernel?
quinton_, the x86.
I dont follow reisio
never leave localhost without it :p
TheLorax, Depends on the card, and how you built your kernel.
oh thats what it is?
ok it booted without mounting the network, but it may change once it’s connected to the wire
oh, emerge -atv app-misc/screen
astorm
it helps with things like copying & pasting without a mouse
wesolek, ok, check it out then
hlieberman, I built it manually. lspci says “Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG.
quinton_, Yes. x86 is what you want for a 32 bit install, in all likelyhood. for i386, yes.
Ahh.
mzbot, wiki host TheLorax 3945ABG
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Asus_W5F
ok brb astorm
hlieberman, cool thanks.
thanks im going to give it a whirl have a bunch of modules to add
just give a yell if you can’t figure it out via the man page, et al.
TheLorax, Er… http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_ipw3945 is a better link.
starting backup
hlieberman, I got to that page from the one you gave me anyway
TheLorax, Did the same thing I did.
TheLorax, Don’t bother with the iwlwifi. Just stick to the simpler (but not necessily better) mess that is ipw3945
ok it boots up without any errors astorm
hlieberman, was about to ask.
still far away from what I had in mind though
thanks monkeh, astorm… I need to hit the hay if I don’t wanna loose my job lol
hi
can i delete the /portage/distfiles
are those the actual applications?
Those are downloaded source tarballs; you can safely remove them. (They will be downloaded again if needed.)
that’s so much sound like pkgsrc
distfiles
thank u
can i run gentoo on a 4 gig drive using slug..
i think its a bit low lol
debian was workign kinda well with ti..
using iwl3945 at the moment, seems fine, but no LED lights
friendly12345, But it’s not in portage.
negative
hardmasked, but in portage
teach EnterUSerName about distfaq
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/faq.xml#distfiles
friendly12345, my LED worked in ubunut
can recommend resources that will show me how to correctly emerge java and jdk?
gentoo white_rabbit_obj java hosting guide
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/java.xml
guys, anyone knows where i get mercury msn to install at gentoo?
if you’re just after browser plugins, just keep an eye out for ‘java’ and ‘nsplugin’ USE flags
no, I’m talking about the driver for 2.6.22 kernel and above
eh?
I’ve been through the gentoo guide a few times already, but I get an error when I run javac
ntie nite astorm, monkeh
white_rabbit_obj u installed a jdk already?
reisio, do u know?
I didn’t understand your question
well, I think I’ve installed a couple out of frustration
at one point I had 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 at the same time
friendly12345, I have no idea what you’re talking about then
but compile your java code online didn’t work
white_rabbit_obj check out java-config-2
media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.14_rc2-r1 failed.
reisio, where does i obtain the mercury?
it’s a msn client
www.mercury.to
it is not in portage
dont have in portage
^[[32;01m*^[[0m Checking for suitable kernel configuration options...
^[[31;01m*^[[0m ALSA is already compiled into the kernel.
ah, 1min
Isnt that what I am supposed to do?
does have any overlay that contains it?
/usr/lib/jvm/sun-jdk-1.6
that might do the trick -- I just cleaned out all of my previous jdk installs so that I can restart this guide from scratch, but I think that's a good place to start troubleshooting
white_rabbit_obj its prob not the "right" way but it works
http://xrl.us/24rf
wiki bonesss 3rd party
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Installing_3rd_Party_Ebuilds
Well maybe there will be more peeps around tomorrow to help with sound support
Cya tomorrow :0
alright, I'll have to give that a try...I fine with just getting it to work
I tried install x86 gentoo install... it runs alot of text and never boots an install screen of any sort?
white_rabbit_obj javac -version returns javac 1.6.0_02
have you read the install guide?
errrr on the gentoo site?
yeah
Minor723, don't use the alsa-driver package, use the in-kernel drivers
No to gloat (ok I am a bit), I'm very glad I picked up this Thinkpad R50, I have everything working except hibernation (not going to bother with this) and the fans, any ideas?
will, Have you looked at the thinkwiki?
that's good to know too...for a while I was thinking that maybe there was a problem with the java 1.6 compiler
will, There's an entire wiki dedicated to installing Linux on Thinkpads.
ok, the upgrade to 2.6.22 may fix this anyway
what would be the quickest command-line method of checking why a particular package is masked?
will, cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan might have some useful info.
emerge -pv =product-version ; but am curious is eix, herdstat, or any others also read this information ...
timotheus, grep -C (some number) (package) /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask
what is a good gnome torrent program?
hlieberman, there is no ibm/fan
run mldonkey and use its web interface
get mldonkey (protocol handler plugin for firefox that adds clicked links to mldonkey server queue)
hlieberman, any /proc/acpi/fan/ is empty
far and away the best solution i've found
will, Oh. Never mind then.
is qt a real long compile?
long enough
woot woot back online
expect at least say 30 mins if you've got a fast machine
took about 20 mins on my athlon xp 2400+
fun
im short on ram and have 2.4ghz p4
I need to get more ram :/
thanks for the estimates though
qt and kde are among the most memory hungry compilations
way up there with app-suck/alzheimers
^ ^
kde rocks
just to make sure that it takes longer I have 3 emerges going in diff terminal windows at the same time
pumice rocks
see if I can burn up the swap space
'updatedb' :p
hmm, never noticed that on the tree
maybe you don't have slocate, etc.
no, app-suck/alzheimers
you must have just forgotten
hehe
way to brutalize the fantasyworld :p
I am getting ready to emerge X, I would like to know how to make it install the nvidia legacy driver instead of the nvidia driver
got a gf4mx440 8x agp card
emerging X doesn't emerge nvidia drivers, unless the open source ones...
yes it does
[ebuild N ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776-r1 6,328 kB
part of emerge -avp xorg-server
now – how do I handle this?
look at your video_cards in /etc/make.conf
I did, its set to nvidia – is there an nvidia-legacy setting?
gentoo GeeBus nvidia guide
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
? xorg config
If you just emerge the legacy drivers manually, it should work fine
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
GeeBus logged off?
im here
my auto-complete isn’t working — hehe
if you mask x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers then xorg-server ebuild will pull in legacy
my video card might work with the regular drivers
what’s a good program to manage wireless network connections with in kde?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html
I would expect so for Geforce 4 ; I think only GeForce 2 and older are “legacy”
I was pretty sure my card was too old for the reg driver
maybe its just the beta drivers I cant use, and I dont care about those
bmaybe its just the beta drivers I cant use, and I dont care about those/b
NICE thank you timotheus
theres hope for me yet
actually, I think the newer drivers killed TNT, and everything /before/ GeForce
Is there a program like PeerGuardian for linux?
how do I get a kernel dump to inspect with gdb later?
Smak, azures, or whatever has a plugin for it
does gentoo’s mplayer really not have a gui
brandon_, look up gmplayer
there are core dump options in the hacking/debug section of the kernel config
need gtk use flag for that iirc
azures keeps bugging
definitely off by default, will need to custom compile
anyone familiar with domain name server?
brandon_ is it a text problem by anychance?
have to enable the ‘gtk’ USE flag
let me check my options…
wiki brandon_ emerge mplayer
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Emerge_MPlayer
this one, net-dns/bind
i’m actually on debian, but i think i’m going to switch to gentoo
thinkin’ again?
you use gmplayer, not mplayer
yeah, right after i’m something close to fully configured
has anybody ever had any problems with azureus text being all messed up?
gmplayer being the exec name, not another package
jesus
although there are many other frontends to mplayer
is there a way to get rsync to work over ssh on a nonstandard ssh port?
(3rd party)
how do you make startup scripts for programs?
like to do what?
like gmplayer -nogui
you want to run it from what – a term?
from a DE?
–port perhaps
not entirely sure myself … gmane.linux.kernel.kernelnewbies is a good newsgroup/mailing list to try
decent shells support aliasing (to run from term)
decent DEs support basically the same thing
how did you do it in Debian?
probably the same way :p
ok, yes apparently it is -P for scp and and -p for ssh
if not that, -e ’ssh -p portgoeshere’ or similar
I take it back, it didn’t work
what didn’t work?
gmplayer -nogui
try: mplayer
doesn’t sound like something that should work :p
that didn’t work either
is there a better way than messing with /etc/conf.d/eth* to seutp things like WEP keys, ESSIDs, etc?
hm
what exactly are you trying to do?
just run mplayer without the skin window controls
how do i get rsync to… sync stuff?
how do you not? :p
mplayer w/o the g should do that, unless you have GUI explicitly in ~/.mplayer/config
when i try rsync -various-elaborate-arguments host:/home/adante/src/asdf /home/adante/src/asdf it says: skipping directory /home/adante/src/asdf
what’s the command you’re using?
brandon_, if you’re playing a movie, you can just type in mplayer path/to/file and you’ll only get a window, no gui controls
rsync -av –dry-run ….
try it, you’ll get an error in terminal, no such command type of thing
then remove –dry-run if its output looks right
works for me
so -nogui in config
what’s the command you’re using?
are you saying that this returns an error? which mplayer
mplayer -nogui file
where are you getting ‘-nogui’ from?
oh praise the lord, thanks
‘mplayer file’
huh, why would mplayer pull in sys-devel/gcc-3.3.6-r1?
no, just terminal
gentoo jsin2e gcc upgrade
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml
I believe I have gcc 4.1.2 now
need libstdc++
erm
libstdc++-v3
terminal
should i try it from config?
what about terminal?
the command you want is ‘mplayer file’ – for example: mplayer ~/music/galaxy_bounce.mp3
I believe there play also…
right, and what about the gui?
what about it?
you tell me
do you want to use the gui or not?
no i do not want to
then ‘mplayer foo.mp3′ like I said
so, if I emerge libstdc++-v3 I should be able to avoid emerging the entire gcc 3 package?
but then the control window shows up!
i found it
it’s -vm
don’t know what it stands for though
virutal module?
virtual nmachine?
virtual memory
i’m not sure, but it hides the control window
very minimal
there we go
shoot, but the command doesn’t work in config
adante, have you looked at unison?
that was actually my first choice, but trying to get it to work in windows, over a ssh connection, seemed to be the farthest thing from ’simple’ that i could fathom
docs suggested installing cygwin and getting it to work with openssh, and which point i figured well hell, now i have cygwin i’ll just use rsync
adante, right i missed that requirement :-/
bug 184575
https://bugs.gentoo.org/184575 tri, P2, All, gentoo@profvince.com-security@gentoo.org, RESOLVED, FIXED, net-irc/xchat security flaw in new scrollback/text replay feature when joining channels with a slash
as it turns out unison has a cygwin package so merhaps i’ll try that next time, depending how adventurous i feel
after editing zone file, how do i activate it?
what is the keyboard shortcut to adjust volume in mplayer
/ and * on numpad is one set
wiki brandon_ multimedia keys
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Use_Multimedia_Keys
might prove useful
does mplayer always start with 100% volume?
starts with what you last used
rndc reload
cool
this is working really well
indeed
Hey guys, I have a couple issues with my mplayer. 1) I can’t get it into full screen mode (the window will maximize, but the video stays small) 2) I can’t figure out how to configure loop mode for the gui
is there any standalone menu program?
check your video output options
where?
to be used with…?
in mplayer/gmplayer
check your -vo

reisio boss i’m using a wm with no menu
