NeddySeagoon, the module in the kernel is ieee…..
modprobe ieee80211
cruxeternus, but who is requesting it is rt2×00 package
my system is not catting the .config…
MAC80211 [=m] Prompt: Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack (mac80211)
bob__ get nopaste
You mean `cat /usr/src/linux/.config` doesn’t do anything?
NeddySeagoon, sorry… I missunderstood…
chjunior, I think it was my fault … I pasted the wrong thing before
http://rafb.net/p/veE7jz12.html (yes, cat was freezing, but less worked)
NeddySeagoon, where is that you said now?
i’m trying to config distcc but when i use the command distcc-config –install it gets a configuration is locked error
YES
test successfull
Im ready bugzilla
And what SATA chipset do you have again?
chjunior, the search will tell you
ne help with my distcc issue?
Marvell.
NeddySeagoon, using / ? I told you… it’s not working….
cock, big cock
hurting
ass
STOP that
i
bob__your root is on /dev/hda3 ? please pastebin your lspci

can i install grub to the beginning of reiserfs partition?
http://rafb.net/p/tAdaf581.html
I should point out that if you look at my first paste, the kernel is identifying the SATA drives.
hey guys ne help on the distcc issue i’m havin
Have you tried booting with that config’ed kernel yet?
Because *that* looks good.
the only difference between the one i pasted and the one i just failed to boot with is putting more drives into * rather than modules… its not done compiling yet, but i’ll let you know when it is.
thats the issue
NeddySeagoon, in tty1 it worked
huh? which driver is problematic?
NeddySeagoon, what is you kernel version?
bob__ The PIIX under IDE
chjunior, 2.6.22-r1
But it is loading the kernel properly, which is all it has to get from the IDE drive. Everything else (root, where the error occurs) is on a SATA drive. Are you sure about this Neddy?
bob__, Hmm .. one sec
NeddySeagoon, searching in menuconfig didn’t returned the samething that returned for you
Keep in mind that this might also be a driver-ordering issue… which means what you think is /dev/sde, might not be when the thing boots up. This can be affected by not loading the drivers for *all* the hard drives at boot-up.
NeddySeagoon, I tryed “by hand” adding in the .config file… and now I got a “.config:1658:warning: trying to assign nonexistent symbol MAC80211″
So, if you have some as modules, those won’t register until much later in the process.
nonexistent symbol….
yes, is possible. more sophisticated than i know how to diagnose. however, all the sata drives are on the same controller.
chjunior, the kernel does not know MAC80211 then
NeddySeagoon, I use 2.6.21-gentoo-r4
NeddySeagoon, so, it’s available in r1, but is not in r4…. =/
hey come on i’d like some help solving this distcc issue i got, so i can have it workin on my network
http://pastebin.org/371
any ideas ?
I just read somewhere I should be using the */desktop profile. Am I OK to just eselect it and carry on as usual?
If you know how to play with GRUB, what you can do is edit the GRUB bootline from the GRUB menu (‘e’, I think) and experiment with different values of /dev/sd* until you hit the right one. Granted, that involves a few trail-and-error boots, but if it’s a driver ordering issue, that will tell you.
drive*
but if it is not that issue and i try this, isn’t it going to screw with the partitions on those other drives?
No.. when you ‘e’ in the GRUB menu, it just makes a temporary change to how it tries to boot… it won’t make changes to your partitions
right, but when the kernel tries to access that partition, and its not what the kernel thinks its going to be…
NeddySeagoon, what about patch the kernel? http://intellinuxwireless.org/mac80211
hello all, is there an ebuild (in standard portage tree or overlay) for kpager2 ( http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=7120 )?
is there any way to make control+enter add http://www.*.com around a url in epiphany like in firefox?
Then it will give you an error telling you so.
how would you go about setting your gentoo box up so a mac on the same network can ftp in a grab the songs off of it?
chjunior, update to the testing kernel
cute… lets see what happens when this kernel compiles
NeddySeagoon, ok
bob__, the kernel looks ok …
is there any rule of creating a changelog ?
Before you reboot, can you also nopaste/wgetpaste your ‘fdisk -l /dev/sde’?
here it is http://rafb.net/p/tjnSkV44.html
windows machine uses mingw, ubuntu machine runs distcc and compiles mingw .o files for the windows machine?
bob__ it should not need an initrd , so remove the initrd line in grub.conf and root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk=8192, then change ral_root=/dev/sde1 to be root=/dev/sde1
And what filesystem is /dev/sde1?
Santanabaer look at one from the portage tree and copy the format or extend the one thats there
i’m starting get a little ticked off now is someone going to be able to help me with my distcc issue, when i use the –install command with distcc-config it says the file is locked that it tries to modify how do i unlock it!
ahh ok
ext3
how would you go about setting your gentoo box up so a mac on the same network can ftp in a grab the songs off of it?
Ok, that checks out. Everything looks good as far as I can tell.
bob__ have you been remaking the initrd ?
yes
should i use an initramfs in grub?
bob__, try a boot without it, now its not required
ok… taking forever to compile…
bob__, no and drop all the ramdrive stuff from the kernel line too
NeddySeagoon, 2000_mac80211-rtnl-deadlock.patch wow!
will do. that was actually just there as an experiment, because that stuff was on the genkernel line and genkernel boots
do i need to tell grub to “doscsi”?
bob__, how did you get a PCI-X card into a ICH4 chipset motherboard ?
I’m not sure i understand what you’re referring to?
bob__, nope … the kernel has everything it needs
woooooo sco is ded
I’d like to install Gentoo on an HP Pavilion XG823 and would like to know which installer to use.
I always use the minimal, it should work for pretty much anything
just use the latest release
bob__, your lspci .. SCSI storage controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II PCI-X Controller (rev 09) and Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) PCI-X and ICH4 … its a strange mix
But when downloading, you have to select…”alpha amd64″ etc.
And I don’t know which one to click on, haha. Or if it even matters?
lolachan, it matters – they are incompatible CPU types
Might not actually be a PCI-X controller… that chipset might be available in PCI and PCI-X, but the lspci database just lists it as the latter
So which one do I select?
like HELLO! is ne1 gonna give me some help!
lolachan, the right one for your CPU
cruxeternus, good point
I guess. Its a thecus n5200 if you want to look it up.
No one here can help you at the moment. Try again later.
!seen ne1
NeddySeagoon, how do I find out what my CPU is?
NeddySeagoon, I don’t remember seeing ne1.
how would you go about setting your gentoo box up so a mac on the same network can ftp in a grab the songs off of it?
lolachan, tell us what system you have
NeddySeagoon, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph06302&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=58245&lang=en
Ahh, that’s custom NAS hardware. It’s possible they cooked up a board with both ICH4 and PCI-X.
what provides the confache binary?
*confcache
LinuxKnox, just use samba
I was given this POS and wanna see what I can do with it, haha.
Yes, it is. It is a nice piece of hardware, actually.
lolachan, you want to use x86/i686
lolachan, that page is dead
good luck with gentoo
Not for me, NeddySeagoon.
jesus, talk about a memory leak. wireshark/ethereal has it
you know what package provides confcache?
access_d, yeah right but I got nothing better to do with my time.
samba is better. Then your mac can just mount the directories over the net.
agent0range, confcache is dead
lolachan, You have an ans anyway
Running a week, it got up to 7 GB of memory
bbias…
gobble gobble
im emerging it
so what is its replacement?
you should probably study up on all the hardware you have first, as you will need to know all of this in order to get it all to work.
agent0range, there isn’t one… ccache is used for compile time but confcache was removed from portage due to issues with stability
you dont need confcache imo
what’s happening with the online package database (packages.gentoo.org) ??
down for maintainance
ah
Is there an announcement somewhere with details?
not sure
WetSpot, see /topic
but you could read chan topic
thanks guys…later
i’m surprised people actually try gentoo when they don’t know (or can’t figure out) their CPU type.
scary
not as scary as how tedious it can be to figure out your CPU type :p
hehe
ok i emerged samba
where is it..
maybe read gentoo wiki’s samba setup guide
also… i would recommedn you add the swat use flag to samba
then remerge it… adds the web ui
Hello, i’m in the process of installing gentoo and am slightly confused about hte profile selection
normally i just left it as the default but just read more carefully and noticed there’s a desktop subprofile
can someone hint me where i can see my gfx card’s busID?
Milo-, assuming a PCI video card, lspci.
In the USE variables, I notice the desktop subprofile doesn’t have nptl and nptlonly listed
ah oki
DryRayvin, pretty much the only difference is default USE flags.
Do those carry over from teh default profile or should they be added manually?
Yeah, just wondering if I should add nptl and nptlonly though
0.0 be the busID?
is there some way to call egrep, so that it will select lines that have “DEPOSIT” or “credit” ?
Milo-, yep, though xorg.conf would use the syntax PCI:7:0:0
yeah
lets see if that works then
can I make grep try to match multiple patterns over multiple lines in a file, or might I as well write some perl?
fubarmanchu, egrep ‘DEPOSIT|credit’
Draconx thanks
grep ‘DEPOSIT\|credit’
Draconx that was so helpful
what if I wanted all files containing “CODEC_TYPE_VIDEO” && “_encoder”
ahurst, you could invoke grep twice. I don’t know if it has an option to search for patterns spanning multiple lines.
Draconx, I don’t think you can span lines, that’s the difficulty. I think it’s a 2 min perl script, but given how tired I am, that would turn into 40 mins =\
ahurst, just invoke grep twice.
maybe find -e {if (grep pat1 && grep pat2) print}
anyone use MDADM?
you still here?
I need help, I’m losing terminals
loosing terminals?
I am no longer able to type in them
wahat is taht
Draconx, I don’t see it.. grep -l pat1 | grep pat2 or somthing?
aham
eg, the kbd stops responding in the middle of a command
but I can still switch between them
so is here anyone who can walk me through setting my TV work as second monitor via S-vid cable?
the wikiguide kinda left me cold
well, might have lost my fileserver
thechris, strange problem
linux raid’s kindy weak
ahurst, there are a number of ways of doing this. You can use grep -l and xargs, you could use your shell’s if function, etc.
Milo-: depends on your graphic card
nvidia geforce 7600 gs
it has the support
Milo- have a look at http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Multiple_Monitors_with_Nvidia
for 3 cards
thanks
why
because it’s not windows? 8D
MDADM is a POS
it doesn’t work like windows?
thechris, sometimes I accidentally press ctrl+s (XOFF – stop transmitting), which makes the terminal appear to be locked up. ctrl+q (XON) will make it come back.
a haven’t problem with any distro
and windows apps wont work with snap of a two fingers?
I may have just lost my fileserver
not serious one
file server?
I had to rebuild an array, and it didn’t work
but instead, it dropped a second disk
now /usr is corrupt
maybe disk problem thechris
no, a disk was unplugged. I plugged it back in
u said raid
i’m not familiar whit that tech
raid5 allows you to lose any single drive and lose no data
that’s it! I was sure there was a neat function to do this. Cheers
is gentoo.seren.com down for anyone else?
Anyone here good with MDADM?
if some of the hd is broken then all of the raid will fail
I think
thats raid0
no workie here
um. why was a disk unplugged?
raid5 allows 1 disk failure. which happened because a disk had been disconnected and needed to be re-sync’d
and what happened to the 2nd disk?
MDADM messed up IRQ217 and now its out
I cant’t help here
irq 217? that’s a lot of irq’s.
one of my old disks in a second raid1 array had failed, and in removing it, I bumped the cable, unplugging a drive from my main array
gentoo.seren.com?
ok, so, that’s not the software’s fault, you moved the hardware.
if gcc compiled in 1+1/2 hours can anyyone estimate how much time is , say X gonna need?
6 days.
ill give you a example
lol
no, its the software’s fault
and i was thinking of going to bed
now i might as well go on vacation
xorg-server compiles only for 2-3 hours for me
no software in the world can be written to overcome you doing something stupid, like moving hard drives with the system turned on.
gcc takes 30 minuts here and xorg server is 7 but thats not all the Xorg deps, i would say no more than 50 minutes for you
how much for gcc?
much more
zomg 2-3 hours?
well, its assumed that I turned the system off in between
http://rafb.net/p/grmGN974.html ?
Downloading ‘http://gentoo.seren.com/gentoo/distfiles/portage-2.1.3.4.patch.bz2‘
i did’t compile it earlier
crazy, i have used this nick for ages
but just in case — “after rebooting, i realized i had to re-sync the previously disconnected drive. while resyncing, mdadm caused an issue with IRQ217 and a second disk was flagged faulty, breaking the array”
not saying one has to do with the other
ahh
ssh command to use for copy from remote to local machine is scp user@host:/path/to/file /path/to/file for example, but see ‘man scp’. Feel free to ask more if something isn’t clear.
reisio, anyway to black list mirrors?
if the kernel just decided the disk was bad, use mdadm to reassemble the array….. i’ve got a disk that fails out of the array it’s in about once a month, i just mdadm –add it back in. tho if the array is stopped now, you’ll have to probably –force something
try mirrorselect
seren, not the point
what for?
you could add the name of the machine to your /etc/hosts with a bogus address
Skunky, point
ssh command to use for copy from remote to local machine is scp user@host:/path/to/file /path/to/file for example, but see ‘man scp’. Feel free to ask more if something isn’t clear.
hmm, if a mirror is having problems, please file a bug at http://bugs.gentoo.org/ , that’s important
how do I do this from the live CD?
lets see what happens this time
is there any ebuild developer awake atm ?
does the version of mdadm on the livecd take the -I option?
yes
though it doesn’t have man
I don’t know how to get md0 back
what is the mknod command?
mdadm will create the /dev entries for you if you give it the right command
whatis mknod
what is the right command?
I have md0 listed as inactive because I only have 2 drives
but it doesn’t have any drived flagged
how do i rebuild?
does md0 show in /proc/mdstat?
yes
what is a great backup program to use in gentoo
for backing up data
inactive though
mdadm –add /dev/md0 /dev/missingpartition
all partitions are listed, and nothing is flagged as down, will the command still work?
wait. so, ALL the partitions for the array show in mdstat?
wouldn’t i need to add a partition without re-syncing it since i “lost” 2 drives, but did no writes to /usr in the time in which I lost it
yes, and none are marked faulty, but mdadm said it could not assemble the array from 2 drives
try mdadm -R /dev/md0
mdadm /dev/md0 –detail returns nothing…
Does anyone here have experience getting ati drivers working on a IBM T43 thinkpad?
um. you usually have to put switches BEFORE components
does mdadm -R /dev/md0 barf or not?
yes, same reason
ok. mdadm -R –force /dev/md0
i need to re-add sdb without modifying it, as it still holds valid daa
actually, all the disks have valid data
you said all the partitions that are supposed to be there were there.
please, make up your mind. which is it? is there a partition missing from mdstat’s list or not?
as i’ve said, both. mdstat shows everything, mdadm says otherwise
heh, I tried what ahurst suggested
i can’t mount md0, but mdstat doesn’t indicate any issues other then the array being inactive
i have my xorg conf ‘working’ but still no signal to TV
mdadm –force -R /dev/md0
Man, is gentoo ever going to put Python 2.5 into stable? sheesh
Pretty soon it will be a year
not until portage doesn’t barf all over itself on 2.5
I’ve not heard of any problems with portage and 2.5
it seems mdadm only knows about the two devices…
is it safe to use portage right now ? they seem to be havin lot´s of issues
SO does anyone else have suggestions how can I get my TV work as second monitor using S-vid cable and nvidia 7600 graphics card?
ok, now I only have 2 devices in mdstat as well
mdadm –scan –auto -R /dev/md0
and/or mdadm –add /dev/md0 /dev/sd??
wouldn’t adding it force it to try to resync?
only if the superblocks have different update times
whcih, if the power was off when the drive disappeared, and it couldn’t find it when you powered up, they should be
Guys, I want to connect my TV to my computer as second monitor, and I’m having hard time figuring out how to do that, the gentoo wiki’s multiple monitors guide kinda left me cold
ok, that seems to work, i’m trying to add sda1 now
using geforce 7600 card
and connecting with S-vid cable
and i have an io error
Milo-: look up the twinview parameters
i swear i’ve had my share of HW/SW issues this year
hydrian where? and I’m not sure if I want to use Twinview
i want to use it as second monitor
for small stuff
that I can manage to do in 640×480 resolution
That what I do with it.
doesn’t twinview copy your main screen’s output?
Milo-: you need to read the README of your graphic card
NO
Santanabaer like i had one ?
it doesnt copy
it extends
Milo-: You biggest issue is going to be dealing with font when using a TV as a screen. Interlace + font = blindness
k
yeah I know
but it’s something, meh
hmm, maybe sda1 broke. seems awefully coincidental
maybe segate drives can’t be unplugged…
hydrian i played around that stuff back in the days when i used windows o_o
it was awful to my eyes to try read some of the stuff
This is where LCD TVs are nice.
Milo-: there are 2 pair of shoes : 1 is twinview and 1 is dual-Xscreen .. Twinview extends 1 X session over 2 screens with xinerama possibility … dualXscreen gives you the possibility to run 2 different X sessions … you cant move windows among the screens
ah
but twinview requires xinerama
Milo-: I ve written a howto several time ago
Milo-: yes
but it usually does automaticly
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Dual_Monitors if this is the howto, i must say
it’s not that good :C
Milo-: its not mine
oki
I wrote 1 in German
the german one is pretty good
Twinview doesn’t require xinerama, it does its own xinerama magic. Cleint programs, however, need to support the xinerama extension if they want to understand monitor boundaries and such.
I think you dunno where it is
thats what I said
I said it uses xinerama
http://wiki.fug-kiel.de/index.php/X-Server_-_Twinview @ brot
that is mine
actually Milo- listen
there is this TINY problem with your guide
it’s. how could i say it.. in wrong language?
but i’ll listen
Milo-: infact I wrote ‘@ brot’
ah
Milo-: do you see the little box ?
at the bottom
?
i see many little boxes
which one am i supposed to be looking at?
the one with the option things
twinview true and that stuff?
exactly that one
Santanabaer, trozdem nicht schlecht
is that to card1 or card0?
thx brot
Milo-: what you mean ?
you have 2 cards ?
erm nvm
other guides kept telling me to have two ‘devices’ in the xorg.conf
SCO is dead.
any eta on x86 stabalization of kde?
(3.5.7)
Milo-: thats wrong
2 devices is needed for Dual X screen
oki
ah
misleading guides
dual X screen stuff is more complicate than twinview
anyways, added those few lines to device
Milo-: you can customize the metamodes
do you understand the syntax ?
thanks for your help. something may now be wrong with one of my drives anyways.
Santanabaer not quite
Milo-: wait let me explain
bah
i think it’s different possible resolution modes?
what use flag do i need to use with hydrogen to get mp3 encoding support/
which the monitor will try
Milo-: yeah it is about resolutions of course
or in this case, TV
so if i set them to 640×480 it will try to use that?
you can see a list of available flags with ‘emerge -vp hydrogen’
thank you
possibly ‘mad’, which is an integer math mp3 codec
Milo-: “1.resolutionmonitor1,1.resolutionmonitor2;2.resolutionmonitor1,2.resolutionmonitor2″
ah
is packages.gentoo.org messed up?
read topic
what topic please?
all there
/topic
\topic
except back
yes
/topic
brot got it right
ok… I see it now… thanks
any eta on it?
hey I was 1st
i guess i’ll have to shut down my fileserver until I can get a new drive to back up the data.
yes, but brot was last
Milo-: NULL == turned off
Boohbah, Triffid_Hunter; the only use flags I see are alsa, debug, jack, ladspa, oss, and portaudio
k
any of those do what i want?
it’s on purpose w,x;y,z?
Milo-: you can switch between the metamodes with CRTL+ALT+(+)or(-)
Milo-: I guess so
well, lets see what happens
when im watching a vid on youtube every 30 seconds it like stops, glitches, then just like a mass output of audio comes out and the video continues
so, no more info than what is in topic?
for now seems not
kk.. I noticed this a few days ago… would be nice to know if there is an eta
as an alternative you could use www.gentoo-portage.com
anyone have failure of the gnome-vfs build?
is this normal?
i’m having troubles getting bind to function properly
the initscript doesn’t seem to work right
works for me
no
Triffid_Hunter, how do i fix it?
Santanabaer well it did something
but when X started
Triffid_Hunter, im not really getting any output or anything in the console i am running firefox from
TV went black
Triffid_Hunter, not compiling anything, or no net lag
according to the gentoo wiki, there are problems with named.pid with versions 9.2.5
it showed the text before starting X
but i’m having the same or a similar problem with 9.4
ah nvm
thanks… will check it out
my background is actually that black
do the thing that stops it happening.. try a kernel with the tickless scheduler and dynamic tick patch
Triffid_Hunter, remove rtc?
Santanabaer is there a reason why it’s black and white?
only if you want to set your computer’s time every time you start it
anyone have a copy of Marc Rintsch’s bitrate.py as mentioned in http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_DVD_to_Matroska
hmmm Milo- Im trying to think of it
when I use a shell window in emacs, $TERM is set to dumb… the problem with this is, when I issue `clear`, the screen isn’t actually cleared and the prompt just returns without doing anything… so I tried changing $TERM (to xterm and vt100), but now when I type `clear` it shows something like: ^[[H^[[2Jgg@tux
~ $ (with "^[[H^[[2J" representing the clear sequence or whatever)... how do I get the screen to actually clear when I type `clear`?
Triffid_Hunter, then where is the tick scheduler and dynamic tick patch located? lol
i continually get 'permission denied' error if /var/run/named.pid doesn't exist
can someone tell me just how to do something, since i'm in a hurry, instead of where to read on it? I've already read on it, and I still need help. I just want to use rsync to update my mp3 player with all the new files that have appeared in /music.
hi, i have many apps i need but when trying to upgrade to 3.5.7 of KDE which was unmasked today it causes problems, i emerge -C some of them but more show up and i need most of them, any ideas? http://paste2.org/p/5700
when i touch it and give ownership to named:named, it always says 'couldn't open file "/var/run/named.pid": file exists'
kernel
Triffid_Hunter, or are you pulling my leg?
and it's totally ignoring /etc/conf.d/named.conf which says to use /var/run/named/named.pid rather than /var/run/named.pid
err... /etc/conf.d/named*
like rsync /music/ /player/ ?
Triffid_Hunter, is it that easy?
and that would update the player, right? using music? not vice versa?
yes. add -av --dry-run if you want to check what it'll do
and i don't want it to delete anything. only add
man rsync is your friend-
it does that automatically, right?
doesn't delete unless i say deletE?
rgk, have you read the documentation @http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml, look at part 4 and down
Santanabaer if you think of a reason why the TV is black and white, hilight me and let me know
what version of bind are you running?
Milo-: sorry
i will read now
my irc client died
net-dns/bind-9.3.2-r4
this sounds familar to me. I filed a bug a few years ago about pid file handling. I wouldn't mind seeing your conf.d/named file.
Milo-: I have no idea for the moment ... hope you checked if you pressed the scart button for tv
in fact, not only that, I'd liked to see your /etc/bind/named.conf as well.
uin fact, not only that, I'd liked to see your /etc/bind/named.conf as well./u
Santanabaer yeah
to enter in that [ -] mode
hmm
Milo-: sorry
my gateway system died earlier and i’ve been running around trying to get the lan sorted out all day
one sec
if i remember correctly, I had the same problem wiith this when i used windows
hesperaux, it shouldn’t delete anything (it might overwrite files that have the same name), but don’t quote me on that… you can always make a backup copy of your files just in case something goes wrong.
and that problem was fixed by using video input/output cable
but meh
Santanabaer fixed, that scart socket where i put that scart cable in
wont show it in colors
-_-
hesperaux, you may want to try `rsync -hav /mp3/dir/ /mounted/player/dir/`
is it possible to make portage having priority against an overlay? if the same version of a package exists on portage, i dont want it to get from that overlay, for example
thank you Santanabaer
hehe
gg_, what does -h do?
human-readable
it just helps me remember the option
Milo-: Im happy it worked
What would cause video to lock during kernel startup on a laptop?
gg_, it’s okay if it overwrites some…i just don’t want it to copy EVERYTHING again to the device. The device is expendable. i just want to save some time by only updating.
framebuffer
change the order in the PORTDIR_OVERLAY
var that is
Boohbah, i’ve tried vesa-tng, vga, vesa and intel810. they all die at the same spot.
have you passed the correct resolution as an argument to your bootloader?
hesperaux, the `-a` flag sets a whole bunch of other flags, which, if I’m not mistaken, include both compression before transfer, and only transferring the differnce of the files
Boohbah, it’s the only valid resolution for the screen. 1400×1050@60

gg_, O_o oh dear. That’s not necessary
lol
it’s useful when you’re transferring files over an ssh connection (which is how I primarily use rsync)
Does anyone know how to solve the issue of Unreal Tournament playing fast due to processor speedstepping?
and the /etc/init.d/named script please (also, what version are we dealing with?)
likewhoa, but i want the official portage repository to have priority.. and it is not listed on PORTDIR_OVERLAY
gg_, i bet.
Triffid_Hunter, i don’t understand. i even use standard resolutions and it still dies at the same spot.
gg_, so -h does what specifically?
700×525 would be valid
`h` is human-readable
9.4.1_p1, there are some other errors as well if i start named manually… /etc/bind/rndc.key: permission denied and couldn’t add command channel 127.0.0.1#953: permission denied

i thought i solved them some time ago with a bios upgrade.
what’s a good program for wav-mp3 conversion?
prints files sizes and such in the appropriate format (e.g. instead of saying 1,xxx,xxx, it would say “1MB” or whatever)
At least it’s no longer a MSFT compiled DSDT table.
lame
gg_, oh sorry
lol good answer sorry

how could I enable confcache?
hmm, ok. mulling it over.
or where is the overlay of confcache?
I think the project died, I’ve been trying to use it for months, without finding the confcache program
used to be in the portage tree, but disappered
hesperaux, if you want to make sure that it doesn’t re-copy everything, create two files, test1.txt and test2.txt with some text in them… put both files in both /somedir1/ and /somedir2/, then change the contents of test1.txt in /somedir1/, then issue `rsync -hav /somedir1/ /somedir2/` (make sure you include the trailing slash)… see what the output looks like. It should only copy test1.txt to /somedir2/ because that’s the only file that
has changed.
what does the useflag mp3rtp stand for?
gg_, oh okay
so bad, nobody pick it up. I still think this is really a kick-of-ass feature.
in the init.d script, insert a command such as this at line 24: echo “PID:${PIDFILE}, CHROOT:${CHROOT}”
then see what it says when started
just to clarify, it needs to happen prior to the check (the one that mentions bug #107724)

wierd issues with firefox – the browser frezes until it can load a page, also scrolling down causing the CPU to jump up to 15%
how does that compare to cdcd?
anyone see this?
I do not know, actually.
This a good place to ask about UT troubleshooting on Linux? With regards to processor speedstepping
revelate1, `grep -i loading.*drivers /var/log/Xorg.0.log` works for me (I’m sure there’s a better way)

So can anyone tell me if this is right.. LVM is not actually a file system, it just makes partitioning easier on pcs and allows for easy fluxuation with a harddrive. Unlike just installing the ext3 filesystem, you dont have that flexibility …
framebuffer modules used during kernel bootup, are they required to be built into the kernel or as modules?
sounds about right
depends how early you want it to switch I suppose
Kijutsu, if i wanted to use them on the kernel line in grub, for instance.
Triffid_Hunter, Okay, thanks a lot man
some of the benefits you cite there are on the right track, but the explanation is a little iffy. try reading Daniel Robbin’s articles about LVM at IBM’s site (they’re still applicable today).
Triffid_Hunter, if i wanted to use them on the kernel line in grub, for instance.
kerframil, I was reading the intro on the main LVM site, but I will check that one out too
it’s quite good.
haaah
the thing to remember is that a LV is your exact equivalent to a partition. a LV is a member of a VG. a VG must be composed of at least one PV (a PV could be a raw physical partition on a hard disk for example).
Everytime I resume from memory suspend, my system shifts to UTC (currently EDT so it goes back 4 hours). It’s a bit annoying and I’m not sure how to troubleshoot. Any suggestions of where to start?
the VG is composed of underlying block devices and acts as a storage pool. within that you create your LVs (and make filesystems on them). there’s a lot of flexibility and scalability at each tier.
kerframil, So does that decrease performance at all, and is it very popular ? Also I started reading the IBM article, and does that allow you to say add a hard drive to your pc while running ?
hmm, guess i did lose my array
it doesn’t magically make your hardware hot-swap capable. that’s down to hardware capability.
kerframil, Okay, how about performance wise… Any decreases in speed or anything ?
writable snapshots
that’s just so cool.
Anyone want to buy SCO stock? (Novel won)
example benefits are being able to create LVs then expand/reduce them easily, being able to add more partitions or disks to a VG and increasing the overally pool of space, being able to migrate LVs between PVs and …
Kevin`: I was just about to say
point-in-time snapshots for reliable backups _whilst_ remaining writable.
something like Windows’ shadow copy or volume snapshot service.
ok
thechris it’s redundancy an the sense that any redundant raid level is
“not a replacement for backups”
kerframil, Alright, thanks a lot
how do you use ssh and scp to move files from one to the other?
ironfoot495 move or copy?
Kevin`: while attempting to rebuild my array, mdadm had an error and took down a second drive… I managed to get the system to boot, but i have partial files…
Kevin`: copy
ironfoot495 scp file user@host:[destination]
which i don’t understand given that I wasn’t writing to /usr anyways…
you can reverse that.
if you lose two drives, you are in big trouble indeed. raid5 cannot protect against that.
kev
thechris the problem was you probably had a bad sector on both drives, which was only found when rebuilding
true, but i only lost 2 drives because of mdadm
yeah
thechris you CAN force the array to start with “bad” drives, btw
Kevin`: so first ssh to the site then scp to copy?
I don’t buy that. Kevin`’s assertion sounds much more plausible.
anyone using init-ng?
ironfoot495 no.
now raid0 is not redundancy
ironfoot495 scp user@host:file .
Kevin`: ok scp user@host:/file
ironfoot495 the . is important, you need a destination
Kevin`: then ?
ironfoot495, . is to current dir
thechris don’t mess with the array too much, recovery is probably possible in your situation, at least on the sectors that aren’t bad.
is there a tool to check HDD’s for bad sectors
did you fix you issues ?
thechris do you have smartd running, like you should?
badblocks
kerframil, You setup LVM2 before you do your actual partition(ext, reiser,…), right ?
once i install pidgin, how can i run it? i can’t find an executable *anywhere*-
kerframil, I was reading the documenatiton and it said u had to load a kernel module
only if you intend to use *entire* disks as component PVs for a VG.
Ratty lvm is block layer, you format the lvm logical volume, which can use different physical volumes for storage
Kevin`: heh last time I had smartd running, it emailed me every time the temperature changed :/
`no not yet . my partner got me trying to fix his gentoo which I’m trying to learn how to scp totake his gentoo a copy of my xorg.conf file
otherwise, no. you need at least one partition to “nominate” as a PV, and form the basis of a VG.
as for kernel requirements, the only thing that’s needed is device mapper support (on the CD it’s a module, dm-mod).
and the lvm2 user-land tools
hey man I really appreciate you .
ironfoot495,
is it possible to autodetect lvm and boot from it without an initrd?
gentoo Ratty lvm2
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/lvm2.xml
nice overview
is there any way to look where an ebuild installs its files to?
qlist from portage-utils
not possible before it runs though
/dev entries driver’ during bootup?
/boot / /home /swap … I could setup / (which contains /var, /etc, /tmp, etc…) and /home to be LVs so I can have them fluctuate between each other whenever I needed them too …
kerframil, Yep, been readin that
look at the example in that guide. pvcreate is used on a partition to mark it as a physical volume. next, a volume group is created (with just that partition as part of the pool, but there could be more).
does pidgin not come with a gui by default? wtf?
Ratty swap shouldn’t be set up as a filesystem
Kevin`: I’m going to try scp root@localhost:/etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf: what I’m trying to do is copy my xorg.conf file and copy it to the other gentoo box is this correct?
for me i had to emerge it again with gtk added to my use flags
I don’t recommend having / on LVM. everything else is fair game though.
ironfoot495 scp SOURCE DESTINATION
dumb question but i can’t get on packages.gentoo.org… what do i have to emerge for the ext2/ext3 filesystem tools?
gah! i don’t want to emerge 50 packages worth of gnome crap =(
i didn’t either, but then i did it anyways
ironfoot495 uhm. why are you doing it from localhost?
*sigh* i’m going to as well lol =P
having / on LVM leads to complex requirements for the boot process to work. and, with a multi-filesystem layout, / doesn’t change a lot anyway.
ironfoot495 don’t you want to copy it to another computer?
I tried to mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 but I get mount relocation error undefined symbol blkid_known_fstype any ideas? nothin in dmesg
want to know how much space my root filesystem uses? 171M.
Kevin`: yes
and it hardly changes at all.
ironfoot495 so you want to copy it from the local computer to another computer, yes?
Kevin`: that’s what I’m trying to do.
Kevin`: yes
that said, it’s still possible (genkernel knows how to build an initrd image that you can use with a kernel to support root on lvm).
I prefer to keep things simple
Wow thats pretty low, mine is 744 MB
ironfoot495 scp /etc/X11/xorg.conf root@othercomputer:/etc/X11/xorg.conf
desktop system?
No thats my server
Kevin`: oh ok got it!
anyone know the command to select the active java JDK?
guess you must be running more stuff
java-config
thanks
What do you consider root file system?
everything except /usr and /home
and /boot
and /var
and /tmp
exceptions are home, var, usr and boot in my case.
What do i have to emerge for the ext2/ext3 filesystem tools?
also, I have /tmp on tmpfs.
The handbook only lists what tools to emerge for 3 file systems
and not hte rest
DryRayvin e2fsprogs
ok, thanks
Darn it’s insanely small, I wonder where my extra usage comes form
DryRayvin I think this is a core component..
oh, and I hate /opt wasting space on the root filesystem. I’ve symlinked it to usr/opt.
oh, ok
opt is a seperate partition for me too
I don’t even see the point in making a separate filesystem for it. about the only thing I’ll ever have in it is hosting with java support anyway (truth be told I don’t use it).
sudo du -s -h bin etc lib root sbin
I’m loathe to give it special treatment. I just see it as a sub-category of usr.
This is my root file system
df -h is a much quicker way to find out.
I needed to see where I was using disk in each directory
kerframil, Alright
was easier to cut and paste the line I had already used
ah, right
Hmm, I’m using something like 100 MB in those dirs
Hi guys. I’m trying to install Gentoo onto a new notebook I put together. When I try to use ‘links’ I cannot access the host. I know that the notebook is physically fine and connected. I am not using wireless but the cabled network port. The problem may be that it has bluetooth as well as wlan.
silly me I have a /diskless on root.
Are there any commands to list all network devices and whatnot?
ifconfig -a
Agnomen ifconfig -a
kerframil, Wait though, wouldnt / change quite a bit though, as u ad more packages though…
or programs i should say
no. packages hardly touch / (few files in /etc).
Ratty most package files will be in /usr
well, /lib also.
portage has a lot of crap in /var
but yes, the bulk is in /usr.
okay my eth0 looks like the one I want, it has received the right IP address through DHCP. I tried editing resolv.conf. I am currently booted from the Gentoo minimal install CD.
Kevin`, Well yes, but / incorporates everything
Ratty but all the files don’t need to be in /, as you well know
umm, no – not necessarily.
Ratty if the filesystem is layed out right / won’t change in size much
if you want it
if you mount a different filesystem somewhere then anything within it is in … a different filesystem.
kerframil, Oh my gosh.. lol… I already have a fully working gentoo install, and have had one for about 1 year now… I was hoping to redo the partitioning scheme of it and put /home on its wn partition…
Okay, I setup my dhcp server to give the same dedicated ip hosting address to my notebook’s MAC address all the time. I stopped and started and it got the new static IP.
Ratty and, what’s stopping you?
Hrm, I can’t seem to find the 700 MB df -h reports with du
Kevin`, I have a jboss server hosting setup on it also
Kevin`: I used this but it did not open so I opened the connection with ssh 192.168.*.* and it opened then I used : scp/etc/X11/xorg.conf root@livecd:/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Ratty so you can’t take /home offline long enough to move it? ;p
When I use links all I get is “Looking Up Host” and after about a minute, “Host Not Found”
hmm
Kevin`, I was hoping to redo everything, that is why Im contemplating my partition scheme actually…
ironfoot495 you don’t seem to understand how scp works if your opening an ssh connection first
Kevin`: yes
du says 300 MB used
I’ve tried editing /etc/resolv.conf manually to add a namserver ip address, but it does the same thing
what does resolv.conf currently contain?
that’s one thing I don’t like about gentoo, it’s easy to get messy
It contains one line, which I put in, “nameserver 4.2.2.4″
Kevin`: well I used the command but just saidssh: livecd: Name or service not known
lost connection
Agnomen route -n
ironfoot495 use the ip address instead then
Before that it contained two lines, “search 192.168.1″ and “nameserver 192.168.1.1″
Kevin`: ok
this REALLY isn’t very hard, once you understand how it works
after running route -n, look for a line beginning with 0.0.0.0
sudo du -x -s -h / report 701M vs df -h 744M
Alright, after typing “route -n” I get a routing table. There are two entries for eth0. One has a Destination (local network x.x.x.0) with no gateway (0.0.0.0) and the other has no Destination (0.0.0.0) with a Gateway (x.x.x.1) (which is my router)
yes it’s the third line. The second is my loopback
the “Gateway” column of that line should contain the IP address of your router. presumably, that is the case?
kerframil, yes it is
Howdy. Just bought a new hard drive while back. Now I’ve noticed it goes into these weird “seek-seek-seek”-frenzies every now and then even when the system is apparently idle. Any way to disable this behaviour, it’s rather distracting event?
Kevin`, Wait though, when you boot into gentoo everything is under /, correct… But your trying to tell me to re-partition my drive so /var, /usr, /etc, /…
hrm. you can reach a host by its IP? try ping 66.102.9.147
Kevin`: yeah it worked thanx I see how it works now
ping’d no problem
well, if 179ms is no problem
it’s probably your nameservers. try the opendns ones: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.222.220
also, they need to go in /etc/resolv.conf to work from the CD environemnt. but … if this is not also copied to /mnt/gentoo/etc before chrooting, you won’t have name resolution after entering your chroot.
not sure if you got that far yet though.
Yes for some reason the normal nameserver I was using isn’t working. Thanks!
No I am installling from a minimal CD and I haven’t yet
ok
This size confusion is giving me a headache and I’m in the middle of a server upgrade, going to save it for later.
no hidden files in the root directory? (just a thought)
Still I’m short 400 MB. :p
also, file slack could play a role in this.
I think du count slack
I have to use –apparent-size
then I get 6xx MB
I’m having an issue with my new Gentoo system
I emerged Xfce4
which also emerged xorg
when you get to setting up /etc/conf.d/net (later) you might remember to set “nodns” on the interface so that the nameservers in resolv.conf are not clobbered.
but when I try to do a “startxfce4″
The . dirs in root is counted in K’s
It can’t find the modules for my graphics
might work out better, given that the nameserver suggested by the router obviously didn’t work too well.
or mouse
or keyboard
I may havebuilt them into the kernel
intead of making them modules
if indeed they are part of the kernel
help?
was 11 lines really necessay?
no
:p
just wanted to explain the issue
how did you configure xorg?
I didn’t
just tried startxfce4
gentoo Capn_Fish xorg
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
xorgconfig
and xorgcfg didn’t work
k
xorgcfg didn’t work?
ope
no screens found
stick with it. xorgcfg usually gets you 90% of the way there.
can you pastebin the file that it generated please?
emerge wgetpaste if you need a convenient way to do it.
where would that file be?
X –configure seems to get me there most of the time
/root/xorg.conf.new usually, as per Code Listing 3.6 of the documentation.
I actually already added that to /etc/conf.d/net do you know if it copies over automatically when I install?
within or relative to /mnt/gentoo?
there’s nothing in /root
you should not modify things outside of the chroot at all (apart from resolv.conf to get you up and running).
is packages.g.o going to come online again?
all that’s in /etc/X11 is xorf.conf.example
Actually if I recall correctly (I am pretty new) I change where my root directory is, presumably from the CD to the HDD.
X -configure
in other words, I have no idea what you’re saying =p
It says “missing output drivers. Configuration failed”
don’t change any configuration information until you have chrooted, basically.
resolv.conf is the one exception to this rule.
Do I need to emerge the video driver too?
hmm
what card do you have?
integrated intel 855ge
I believe
okay I already changed /etc/conf.d/net
Hmmm I wonder if all the Gentoo mirrors are hosted on Linux
I’ll try reemerging xorg-x11
portageq envvar VIDEO_CARDS
what does that say?
oops, sorry
obviously that question was for you ^
on the up side my SD reader works
lots of stuff
is i810 mentioned?
ya
lspci perhaps to verify what card he has?
ok, so the automated approach is failing and I’m not sure why yet. did you try the semi-automatic way as per the doc?
I know I have integrated intel graphics
I just got a new machine and, since my old Celeron runs Gentoo on a single partition, I’d like help from you guys deciding what should get it’s own partition on my new Athlon64 X2.
I just ran xorgcfg
then tried xorgcfg
then tried xorgconfig
and canceled it
Go LVM then you can always changes things when you get it wrong
do you actually have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? if so, I’d like it to be pasted please.
no
hi
I have no experience with LVM. Got a tutorial which would increase my confidence enough to try it?
only the xorg.conf.example
I’m looking for help in getting a USB flash drive and/or hard drive working, I think I’m close but messing up, so any help would be appreciated
gentoo howto lvm
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/lvm2.xml
…and how flexible is it? Can I shrink and grow ext3 partitions at will?
Yes
if you finished xorgcfg, you should have a xorg.conf.new file
ironfoot495
did u fix ur scp problem?
But thats more due to ext3 supporting shrinking/growing
I’ll try
again, see the doc.
lvm can resize things, but without file system support it doesn’t help much.
last i checked u “scp user@ip:/remotedir user@ip:/local_destination
Sounds good then. Still, what do you recommend for partitioning? I was thinking one for /boot (security reasons), one for /, one for /usr/portage, and maybe a separate one for /home. (and of course, the second 500GB drive mounted on /srv for my music, manga, and other Samba shares)
the other thing that spring to my mind is whether you enabled AGP and DRM (that’s Direct Render Management) in the kernel. zgrep CONFIG_AGP /proc/config.gz
I’m also considering putting /tmp and /var/tmp in RAM, but that can be decided later. (I have 4GiB of RAM, so it’s not THAT risky)
/var/tmp is not supposed to be volatile.
I get config_agp_intel=y
ok, good
/boot /home /tmp /var/tmp /var /usr/portage /usr/portage/distfiles
I don’t know the sync rates for my screen
well, see if you can get at least a formative config file generated.
/var/tmp has to be disk on Gentoo it’s too big
things like sync rates can be handled thereafter.
k
just use any option?
Actually, that depends. first, as I said, I have 4GiB of RAM. Second, the contents of /var/tmp are configurable.
also, it’s explicitly supposed to be for data that is preserved between reboots.
bah… packages being down is making me cranky
emerge compiles in /var/tmp fx. office would be 6 GB+
the FHS defines it as such too.
I use OpenOffice.org’s -bin package… ever since a compile took over 24 hours.
Should take 6 hours on your new cpu
Probably, but I’m fine with the -bin for now.
er … no. a random approach is not going to help.
anyway there is a lot of reasons to make /var/tmp disk
OK, I have a file
pastebin it
Can Portage be directed to use somewhere other than /var/tmp without hacking the code? I don’t think compilation temp counts as “requiring non-volatile storage”.
well, thats odd.
yes. PORTAGE_TMPDIR.
i’m hoping to get help mounting a USB flash drive – it’s being recognized and I’m trying to, as the documentation says, use “mount /”dev/sda1 /mnt/usb” but it says that “mount point /mnt/usb does not exist” what am I diong wrong?
i was going to hook my desktop up to my laptop and use distcc to save compile times…
How can I pastebin it?
teach Capn_Fish wgetpaste
No such faq
teach Capn_Fish paste
Use http://rafb.net/paste or emerge wgetpaste. Pasting in #gentoo itself clutters the chat and will get you kicked by Naamah. Use the aforementioned site and hand us the URL so we can check it out.
50 seconds, laptop with desktop using distcc: 2:59…
actually slows it down somehow…
Rather than put /usr/portage/distfiles on it’s own partition, I think I’ll move distfiles to /usr/local/distfiles or somewhere else on one of the bigger partitions.
Good to know. Thanks.
I take it you know about DISTDIR also.
By the way, where should I look for a list of configurables like that?
I already knew DISTDIR from my poking around on this system.
the portage manpages, make.conf.example and the output of emerge –info –verbose.
Noted.
The point of making portage seperate is lost if you put it on usr
You want /usr to be semi read only
totally agree.
http://rafb.net/p/AyWe5g35.html
The exception is /usr/portage and /usr/src if your heavily into source /usr/src should eb put on a disk too
that actually looks like it’s on the right track
I’ll consider all that. The important thing is to not have to use a veritable swarm of partitions for now. I can fix it later, but I’m short on time at the moment.
(Exams coming up)
copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf if needs be, then try running startx.
how can I emerge system w/o one package, which is blocking?
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill X, if it does load.
I know
the solution is to resolve the block really. what is blocking?
I’m not new to linux btw
same error
baselayout =/ sabayon is a strange distro.
can’t find modules, no screens found
baselayout is blocking makedev
you may be new, you may be old. but you are still asking for help with xorg configuration and that’s the purpose of this conversation as I understand it ;p
true
I don’t get it
the same process worked fine in Debian many times
it’s probably a monitor issue but, just to confirm, pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log also
wait, it says “no drivers available”
what version of baselayout is it wanting to install (emerge -p baselayout).
paste please
k
http://rafb.net/p/3hzFkp93.html
What is most important is to protect /var from running out of space, it can corrupt your portage cache
yes, I see what you mean
It should be working?
yeah. if you run emerge -pv xorg-server, what is the status of the i810 flag?
What do you mean?
I’m not sure what the “flag” is
you will, if oyu run the command.
you*
I was thinking of starting with /var and /home NOT on their own partitions. That way, / would be nearly 500GiB and would contain both.
I did
That’s why I asked about shrinking an ext3 partition.
I see
there should be a reference to i810 among the many flags listed.
yes
and it says?
you want the use flags?
no. I want to know how the i180 flag is presented
as I do not have the benefit of your vantage point.
It is in green
it has a green N by it
ok, cool.
hang on
k
you know what, just pipe it through wgetpaste
k
baselayout-2.0.0_rc
bleeding edge, eh?
lol tell me about it
what do ya think I should do?
http://rafb.net/p/oYN2Tb83.html
this might sound like an odd question but, this is a fedora linux system right?
i.e. not Gentoo/FreeBSD?
ok, we really can rule that out. the driver has definitely been built.
sabayon linux. devs suggest just downloading isos or split isos and update them
Could me having bungled configuring the kernel somehow be causing this?
but I’ve heard emerging can make a system up to date. I’ve found an unofficial guide that should handle it but it’s kind of ugly using –skipfirst and –resume. how do you feel about this distro?
oops, we don’t support sabayon in here
there are some elements that are important in the kernel (AGP for one, DRM for 3D). but there is no evidence yet that you’ve bungled anything.
ok
how do I emerge system w/o one ebuild
I did when I tried to install Gentoo on my desktop. Left out the ethernet driver. It didn’t work out
lol
lol @ capn_fish
try uncommenting the lines that load the “dri” and “glx” modules in xorg.conf (they’re near the top).
k
no good, same error
What’s up with p.g.o?
anyone using sshdfilter? or any other type of sshd brute force blocker?
jale2ice, there’s fail2ban, though I’ve never used it.
I use key auth
I don’t care so much anymore no that I’ve got eix up and running, but does anyone have any news?
i tried using a PAM-level blocker for that, but it turned out to be more trouble than it was worth
jale2ice, running sshd on a different port or not using password authentication does wonders, too.
Draconx, o.O i like passwords
do those too
I’m going to have to admit defeat for now. I’m about to fall asleep on my keyboard :/
k
I can live with CLI for now
any other place I should look?
Draconx, what other ports can I forward SSH to?
jale2ice, you can run sshd on any port you wish.
k k, thx
thanks for your time
I’ll probably get it sorted out eventually
anyone use ultramixer?
no but it sounds interesting, what is it?
wiki intel 855
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Intel_855_andor_915_fix
hmm, that’s not what I had in mind.
something is nagging at the back of my mind but I just can’t think of it. it’s annoying.
my sound driver isnt showing up in the config..
does “zlib” refer to zip somehow? im trying to compile tiff support with zip compression, but there’s no use flag that says “zip” specifically
k
im using alsa
should be straightforward. anyway, need to sleep.
did anyone have any issues with libexpat’s library changing names… thus requiring the rebuild of all other packages depending on libexapt?
how do I get the “locate” command? Findutils doesn’t work
emrge slocate
thanks
yeah, use zlib (for instance, it was originally made to provide compression abilities to libpng)
ok, thanks
it uses DEFLATE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEFLATE)
1000’s of 58MB tiff files adds up quck
why do I get this error while compiling kde * To support Video4Linux webcams in this package is required to have
* =x11-libs/qt-3* compiled with OpenGL support.
* Please reemerge =x11-libs/qt-3* with USE=”opengl”.
sn00p-: I’m not sure what to tell you, the error message is completely clear
any ideas why nvidia-settings won’t accept any overclock settings?
I I edited the make.conf and put that in there it still gives me the error
sn00p-: Did you emerge qt-3?
and nvclock . . . just doesn’t detect the right clock speeds
sn00p-: or do a emerge –newuse world?
No but I will
is there a way to “nice” a command after it has started?
top and other tools has support for changing the nice level of running processes
got it in top, thanks Miravlix
Miravlix, the qt3 seems to be masked
ShockValue, renice
My computer keeps hanging right after agpgart initialization.. so i removed agpgart and now it hangs right after real time clock initialization.
What do I do?
According to the Gentoo/AMD64 FAQ, PREEMPT isn’t well-tested for gentoo-sources on amd64. What do you guys think?
when did it last boot succesfully, then figure out what you did to it since then
then just un-do it..
Thats the thing. when it started doing this, I did nothing.
uh huh
….
….helpful.. thanks a crapload…/sarcasm.
no extra charge
you have no idea though how many times the helpdesk person hears “I didn’t do anything….. oh..”
Hey. I have a book that I want to take pictures of all the pages and convert them to a pdf (no OCR or anything). What’d be a good program to assemble the pdf / clean things up a little bit? I have a nice camera.
the problem with you ‘helpdesk’ people. you think everyone you talk to is an idiot. get rid of that assumption.
something changed, or else it would still boot no?
It hasn’t booted at all.
It’s a new installatinl
*installation.
It boots from the CD fine
but it will not boot from the hard disk kernel.
what happened to the overlay “xeffects” in layman ?
whining will not get you support
you forgot to install a bootloader?
Boohbah, and ceaseless arcasm on someone’s part when they are frustrated sure as hell doesn’t help.
