it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to have the firmware and not the iwlwifi driver
There may be some documentation in /usr/share/doc/module-assistant
linux kuramýyorum yardým lazým
ah .. no depends .. weird
no, only iwlwifi afaik.. and iwlwifi is GPL’d, as stated, so licensing isn’t the issue there
english
thanks
is it in new ?
haven’t checked actually
!find iwlwifi experimental
not there
:/
guess not
i guess you could ask the maintainer
yeah, i don’t see it in incoming either
!maint firmware-iwlwifi

#debian-kernel on oftc!
damn, ipw3945 died on me again
iwlwifi is “beeing worked on” since 99days
oh wait .. maybe they merged it into the kernel ?
nop
heh
oh .. they can’t .. nevermind
no, it’s still beta
even if they can
so is this linux thing
hehe
it’d be funny if it wasnt so true
yyeah.. i had to patch the drivers (myself, by finding the bug) before one portion would work.. they are beta
intel applied it though, so that’s good at least
be easier if they just truly GPLed the damn thing
oh – one reason it may not have been in was due to the lack of mac80211, but that’s been fixed in sid now w/ the appearance of a 2.6.22 package
but at this point it’s anyone’s best guess
too hard to second guess those wacky DDs
hm
Anyone have a clue on how to run apt-ftparchive in order to create a correct Release file? Mine gets a zero-sized entry with an invalid MD5 for the Release file itself (i.e. it’s self-referential, which confuses apt-get)
hey-lo
ok, ubuntu is not impressing me.. any way to covert it to debian?
you can reinstall
simply changing the packages is likely to break your system
not really the easiest option, as I lack a CD-R atm
you can bootstrap a new installation off an old one
using debootstrap or similac
erh, similar
the only other option is a floppy
debootstrap or similar won’t work for you?
never tried it
well, haven’t in years
i need a mini linux system with just enough to run busybox
How fast can most servos move?
where can i get thi from ?
eh, it can wait till tomorrow. I can burn a disk at work
tomsrtbt.
http://www.toms.net/rb/
yea
i kinda need the actual file system though
tomsrtbt.
extract it from the floppy image ?
and can that run busybox ?
yes
is there a known issue with equalize in ip route in etch?
i’m having problems with it :/

What kind of problems? What are you doing? What’s happening? What do you expect to have happen?
i’m trying to do load balance between two gateways with static ips
looking at it right now
but when i watch the routing cache, i can see two items per conection, one for each gw
You haven’t said how you plan on deploying this, but for your standard “least Linux distro that runs busybox” requirement, that’s your answer.
all the trafic is routed throu one of the gateways, as it matches the first rule :/
wait, i’ll pastebin some things
hi, i’m on 2.6.21-2-686 sid, trying to install nvidia kernel drivers, and the nvidia wiki says to install some “nvidia-kernel-*” packages. my apt tells me these packages “have no installation canidate”. is there anything i should know? i already checked my sources.list, i have non-free and contrib for testing, and i just ran apt-get update a few minutes ago
there http://pastebin.ca/674159
and everithing is routed throu 192.168.1.242
aaaa, i forgot a rule
did you get my pm
ip rule add from 192.168.1.222 table 99
(i got a socks server binded to that ip, i want to load balance all outgoing conections from that )
ack… not nvidia wiki. debian wiki
any idea?
Don’t /msg me.
hi, is there an option to set warm-up time for scanimage
ah forgot it is freenode
im so sorrry i really am
NP
If you’re trying to set up a secondary rescue partition, I typically do that as a “/system2″, and just do a minimal Debian install into it.
~150 – 200 MB should be sufficient. Gives you a lot mroe tools than just a busybox system.
another system ?
you mean like another server host ?
or on a different partition ?
A seperate partition, as a seperate boot option.
helly babies
partition table is already set i got like 75 mb
Hi man!
hi dude man
Plan ahead.
Sorry for asking a off-topic question. But you don’t play Tony Hawk – American Wasteland, right+
?
Sorry everybody!
“ATI”?
look in #kde
I just saw it
i thought they had even shittier drivers?
ask for permission to msg him about something personal perhaps ?
i know they made the windows half unstable (didn’t have debian on this box at this time)
anyone got an idea whenn lenny come out?
no
ok
They seem to be slightly more open. Personally I’d go Intel graphics if I could, they’re GPLd.
you know if you put your palm on your ear and try sucktion pump style pumping, you can get the water out after you take a shower
I know, I thought of that afterwards. I’m sorry.
well, the way my dual-boot is set up, i’m not touching ATI
I prefer the alcohol solution.
Hey there. Someone please give rerogo a hand. He’s being a right pain about it all on some other channel.
Drink alcohol until it evaporates the water from your ear.
?
lol
well, it’s not like anyone else was doing anything there
That happens more quickly if you drink through your ear.
that’s all you can do to help me. Goodbye.
in which OS ?
borat man is around?
heh
My solution in general is to avoid closed HW solutions. /msg dpkg nvidia for all I know on the topic.
ok
i need budds
brb
You’re welcome to gripe to Nvidia about it as well.
like they care .. morons still buy their hardware
i already looked at that page, as far as i can tell (lynx doesn’t show urls(it was a page about nvidia on the debian wiki))
the problem is the packages it tells me to get have for some reason been removed from the apt repository
is this for Debian or some other OS ?
oh .. he’s using testing
As I said, that factoid knows more than I do.
this is a problem?
ok
binary nvidia crapness is currently biffed in lenny/testing
*mutter mutter*
if you want stable .. use stable
no, i want testing
because otherwise all my gentoo friends are annoyed with me for not having access to the latest X
then you get the broken bits
I usually have fewer stability problems with unstable than I do with other distros “stable” releases
mutter in my language means green peas
mutter panner
then you’re lucky .. please don’t advocate it here
so i’ll just use my XP side for stuff like this until it gets cleared up
paneer*
paneer means cheese
and that is actually a south indian dish
I didn’t advocate anything
not pakitani or north indian
thanks anyway
I would like to adjust the Lamp warmup time using scanimage, i can find any thing in man scanimage nor scanimage -h
where else can i look to find an option ?
^^cant find
hm?

hi, can i use zfs with debian?
How can I configure debian to use 5 NIC cards?
I want to use debian as a firewall
Anyone run into the issue when using Module-assistant and trying to build for fglrx? Here is the error I end up with – FATAL: modpost: GPL-incompatible module fglrx.ko uses GPL-only symbol ‘paravirt_ops’

or put them into bridge mode using brctl
how?

hi, I am having a problem with my camera, I can see on dmesg the following http://pidgin.im/nopaste/296 but I can not mount it as a usb or hard disk, any clues please?
hrm. I installed gforge and now when I run ssh or use cvs over ssh it works but I also get output saying “Could not connect to database”. I thought this was explanied by “auth sufficient pam_pgsql.so #Added by GForge install” in /etc/pam.d/common-auth but after I removed that I still get the message
oh, duh, well, thats another way to fix it. I edited postgresql config to tcpip_socket = true and now it actually can connect. it’s weird that none of this works by default on stable install, I guess gforge isn’t very popular
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/dpkg/* am i screwed?
i made a booboo, how can i rebuild the list of packages that are installed on my system?
why in the world would you do that
restore from backup and aptitude update?
how to check if I have gtk installled in my gnome box? (etch)
a backup? ie: i would have had to have set that up?
yes
fuck
o well :/
the alternative is to just reinstall them.
the entire system
this is an ubuntu system
it’s not devistating or anything
!status-recovery
If your dpkg status file has become corrupted, first backup the current version, and restore a backup from /var/backups/dpkg.status. If all of those are corrupted/missing, then you will have to reinstall all of the packages you currently have installed. try this: find /usr/share/doc -maxdepth 1 -mindepth 1 -type d -not -name texmf -not -name debian -printf ‘%f install\n’|dpkg –set-selections; apt-get dselect-upgrade;
theres no script to configure all 5 NICS as a gateway?
no, because it’s not clear at all what it means to configure them as a router.
check out /var/log/dpkg.log, you’ll have to sort of guess from the data, but it should have a record of all the installs you’ve done
i like that dpkg status-recovery
ugh. the command is wack.
wack?
I have a machine running debian 4.0, it has 5 NIC cards in it. I want it to act as a firewall/gateway for machines that get plugged into it via Cat5 cable
!NIC
well, nic is (Network Interface Card) The NIC is an add-in board that enables a computer to connect to some form of computer network.. Network Information Center
install ipmasq, set up the interfaces, install a dhcpd server, and away you go.
though why you’re using 5 nics instead of two nics and a switch is beyond me.
he’s going to need a bridge
I think he wants the equivalent of a 4-port dsl router
won’t need
you’d have to route everything between local machines if you don’t bridge…
so the machine can’t act as a switch?
yes it can
well then I want it to act as a firewall/switch
just like a commercial router, like lynksys
status-recover =~ s#dpkg –set-selections; apt-get dselect-upgrade#xargs aptitude –schedule-only reinstall; aptitude install;#
i didn’t have anything called ’status-recover’ to modify
status-recovery =~ s#dpkg –set-selections; apt-get dselect-upgrade#xargs aptitude –schedule-only reinstall; aptitude install;#
OK
check out this to set up some of your interfaces to behave as if they were a switch: http://linux-net.osdl.org/index.php/Bridge
I’m trying to update a sarge box, & it fell apart in the middle because of a linux kernel update, so the apt-get upgrade exited in the midle. is there a way to make sure I’m reverted back to the point before I issued apt-get upgrade?
and I would recommend shorewall to set up your firewall, but that’s just my opinion, it’s not required
note required for firewalling/routing*
http://www.shorewall.net/
would it be better to simply use my wireless router as the firewall/switch?
better, maybe. easier, yes.
but also not remotely as functional and probably not as secure
dondelelcaro?
what do you mean by functional
is there a way to prevent fonts from blurring on lcds?
turn off Anti-aliasing i guess
use native resolution of the lcd
oh .. that too
even when i do that it still blurs
well, your wireless router is just a little appliance that does only one thing. If you use a linux box as a firewall/router, you can run all sorts of software on it. intrusion detection, network sniffing, etc.
it’s weird because it doesn’t blur on windows xp
turn off sub-pixel hinting
sniffing?
it is off
turn it on then
?

hi all
debian or ubuntu?
i’ve only used debians on servers, never tried it as a workstation/desktop machine

this is #debian, so Debian.

yeah, but jeff foxworthy invented apt

hehe
anyone using a stinkpad or other lappy with a synaptics + verttwofingerscroll?
is that moo from me ?
please turn that off
abrotman, it doesn’t parse the right stuff either
no doubt, that’s more annoying than me
?
explody, I never use something that stinks
abrotman, I’m not on an AMD
i have a thinkpad .. but it’s the good kind
that’s his box .. not yours
oh, nice move
abrotman, ow sorry
abrotman, i didn’t do it..
yes you did
do you use vert/horix twofingerscroll?
abrotman, he typed !moo…

!moo is off
that’s nice .. turn your script off
ok?
i have a nubby
ahh I have one of the ones with both
look in manu krfb and drag to desk top thats it
I got hooked on the 2-finger thing from a mac we have, but the synaptics is all spazzy when I scroll

I’m using debian etch, I’ve installed libpam-krb5, ssh-krb5, krb5-user, and have configured my pam modules as documented with libpam-krb5
it’s your irc client
abrotman, suck one
afk
I can use kerb passwords to log in, but I cant get in automatically without a ticket.
any documentation on how to get this working?
asshat
not you
you aren’t supposed to get in automatically without a ticket…
whoops
rephrasing
I have a ticket and I cant get in.
abrotman, what ibm?
ticket?
do you have sshd configured to accept GSSAPI authentication?
thinkpad
whats speed of it
sshd doesn’t even require pam_krb5 to do kerberos auth, also, it does it all internally
GSSAPIAuthentication yes
is in there
ahh, ok
KerberosAuthentication?
search for Kerberos and GSSAPI in the sshd_config manpage
KerberosAuthentication yes
abrotman, i got a p75 with xfce and debian slow think pad
make sure your client is also configured to use kerberos
GSSAPIAuthentication yes in /etc/ssh/ssh_config
also check out GSSAPIDelegateCredentials
GSSAPIAuthentication yes
deligate credentials is a no.
i’ll try that.
i have a newer one
ok get a fresh ticket on your client machine, and run sshd in debug mode
abrotman, 3 gig?
/usr/sbin/sshd -ddd -p 222
ssh -vvv -P 222 yoursshserver
ran kdestroy
ran kinit
sshd will spit out a bunch of stuff and somewhere in there is info about what it did with GSSAPI
does it really matter ?
not realy
anyyone know how i can resize a my ext3 partition with fdisk?
i dont see a resize option in fdisk command line
explody, ssh -vvv -P 222 servername didn’t work:
Connecting to 222 [0.0.0.222] port 22.
err, lower case p?
make sure you’re running the sshd on port 222 first
/usr/sbin/sshd -ddd -p 222
google ?
yeah, that crapped out a lot of info
(reading)
Hey guys, i done a dist-upgrade and everything seems to be okay (since i didn’t reboot, yet
). However, i would like to understand well the lines 30-32 of this output: http://rafb.net/p/g5B9vn66.html . Does anyone have an idea?
i guess im googeling righ tnow though

i can’t do it again since the package has been updated.
is that because my /etc/krb5.keytab is f’ed up?

Yeah, I noticed that, the rest of the text isn’t.

What is wrong with this crontab? http://pastebin.ca/674218
i can kinit on both boxes.
no, if i try to dist-upgrade there is no more package to install, now.
yes, i’m sure. Just i would like to understand why this happened.
claudio`: reinstall != dist-upgrade.

i suppose it’ll not got error again, since the symlink has been removed

KRB5_KTNAME env variable?
one sec
sure
Any ideas why that crontab fails to run?
abrotman, maybe you know if there is something like snoopylogger but than more recent development ?
It’s tired?
check /var/log/messages, /var/log/daemon.log, permissions on the contab file(s) in question, ownership.
yes, make sure of several things:
ttysnoop ?
hi . any volunteer for helping me fixing some nasty apt-get problems ?
abrotman, maybe
just ask
i dont’ know what snoopylogger does
http://rafb.net/p/NgqAwO50.html
make sure the server has the proper keytab in /etc/krb5.keytab; make sure the KVNO is the same as in the KDC
abrotman, if it`s ok I`ll begin pasting logs in pm !
abrotman, it logs all the exec’s that are made on the system
make sure the forward and reverse DNS records are valid for the server
not to me you won’t
explody, I’ve just extracted it

Please do not paste anything at all to this channel. Instead, use: http://channels.debian.net/paste/ or http://rafb.net/paste/ or http://picpaste.com for pics.
abrotman, as far as I can see, ttysnoop does the same
forward and revers lookups work
how do i check KVNO?
abrotman, don`t worry I`ll begin pasting small one :p
klist -k /path/to/extracted/key
do not msg me
ok
ok man !
Interesting news?
oh, also check the KDC logs right away, they may tell you exactly what is wrong
abrotman, http://rafb.net/p/OEmes162.html
explody, ok; Im looking into the keytab stuff right now
the KRB5_KTNAME thing is openldap-specific, sshd should look for /etc/krb5.keytab by default
i thought because I could kinit that stuff would work.
I have. Nothing shows up in the log. The */5 record for echo should print a lot of infomration over a day. I see nothing.
kinit is purely client-side
all you need for kinit to work is a krb5.conf and the kinit binary
http://rafb.net/p/OEmes162.html
any other ideas? Do I need to tell cron to read this file somewhere. Permissions are the same as the logrotate script next to it in the same dir.
and what’s in the file in /tmp/ ?
Um, cron *mails* its output, Is mail configured?
abrotman, karsten, did you read the output?
Try: ‘* * * * * touch /tmp/crontest’
yes, to a mail server working properly
claudio`: i already told you
good idea
… and check for existance of that file at the top of the minute.
did you check the bts ?
sorry, i’ve probably missed something. Can you repeat?
also, do I need to inform cron of the change I made to the cron, or does it read it every minute?
abrotman, http://rafb.net/p/63nW6911.html
claudio`: the packaged contains a dangling symlink .. it removed it.. it’s not a big deal
checked the bts ?
no abrotman , never tried it

good night all
ok, THX.
ok but this isnt spam

did someone solicit you?
It re-reads crontab every minute
nothing was created.
explody, what’s the command for checking the version of a principal in kadmin?
getprinc principal@REALM.COM
abrotman, nice, thanks !
the kvno is in the output from getprinc
abrotman, I don`t think it help me much ,. how can it be usefull for me ?
how could i check current mount poitn?
Uhm.. and why apt run /sbin/update-grub rather than /usr/sbin/update-grub? I haven’t the full path in my postinst_hook inside the /etc/kernel-img.conf file.
because you’re running unstable ?
df -k .
ok thanks
claudio`: ls -l /sbin/update-grub

can someone remind me how i stop my syslog being dumped on the console?
whats /mnt for then?
OK, then something’s not working right. Is cron running?
/etc/init.d/cron stop; /etc/init.d/cron start
yes
for mounting things…CDs, iso images, whatever
ok
Is user prohibited from running cronjobs?
im learning and trying to do LFS
claudio`: cat /sbin/update-grub
so it wants me to mount file system on /mnt/lfs
I have * * * * * root command, so its root, and root is in /etc/cron.allow
hi
just “mkdir /mnt/lfs”
http://rafb.net/p/tXv9ZQ63.html
?
claudio`: i know what it says .. did you read it ?
for example, I have things like /mnt/cdrom, /mnt/iso; /mnt/nfs,
there is no configuration for cron to tell it to read the crontabs in /etc/cron.d is there? I don’t need an entry in /etc/crontab telling cron to read it.
subdirectories are fine
i’m reading it
do not do that again
If /etc/cron.allow exists, IIRC, only the users explicitly mentioned in there can run.
sorry !
you’re running unstable .. things break
right, which I am doing properly
I think /etc/cron.d/ is automatic.
remove the lines about /dev/tty* and/or /dev/*console from your syslog.conf
if I setup a crontab using crontab -e, which will create a spool crontab, everything works fine.
Hello to all
hI
so? I suppose i have to update /etc/kernel-img.conf and read NEWS.Debian[1] following its instruction. But i still don’t know why this warning message has not been shown.

assuming it’s a synaptics pad, try “synclient”
command / input seperator.
man 5 crontab
Can anyone help me out with this error? http://paste.debian.net/35646
as opposed to ;, I got it.
just keep a backup of your current kernel
where?
If I i install debian sarge from a disk I have from a book, how do I upgrade to ETCH?
no, just don’t remove the old entries from /boot/grub/menu.lst so you can fall back to an older kernel if the new one does not work
claudio`: you pasted it
explody, yeah I think it is, thanks
/msg dpkg sarge-etch
i’m reading my last paste but without matching that string
Not quite, it’s treated as a newline, any following content is treated as stdin for the command given.
i use lilo and its a remote server
abrotman, looking for stable rep. for debian , to insert into my sources.list
maybe should i check the previous one?
scary
you’re not running stable
I see
claudio`: jsut change the file it told you to chnage
but lilo has a feature to only run a kernel once
thanks dude
i don’t have references to either of those
use the config of your running kernel as the oldconfig for your new kernel, and you’ll have a good chance of being OK
Thank you jamonation
explody-rocks
in syslog.conf, that is
you filled explody with rocks ?
abrotman, yes I got the point . now I`m trying to update and try again with stable-release repositories
the kernel was already compiled
you can’t
thanks dpkg
yes but if it panicks on bootup, it’s not going to retry, it’s going ot lock up
you can’t downgrade
i think it will be fine
explody, I searched for a package with that name in synaptic, but the only result is for a package that is already installed
do the files need to be executable?
no problem
abrotman, what I want to do is monitor every tty automaticly in a seperate file, so when the tty exists.. monitor it… this because of scripts that login when I don’t know they login… is various
yes, sorry if I didn’t say that
i can do a hardreset from here
sure but i really would like to understand first. Why apt didn’t show me that message?
check for /proc/config.gz
claudio`: pretty sure it did
config of the running kernel, if it was configured with that feature
ttysnoop can’t do that ?
please, help me to find where.
yes, try “man synclient” and “synclient -l”
In /etc/cron.d/ yes. /etc/crontab, /etc/cron.{hourly,daily,weekly,monthly}, no.
claudio`: look through your posts
abrotman, as far as I can see, no… or I should open a lot of TTY logs by default
oh sorry, getting swamped here
claudio`: or just change the file and forget about it
pastebin your syslog.conf
Can anyone help me out with this error? http://paste.debian.net/35646
i don’t use it .. i odn’t spy on users
this is not much helpful, anyway THX for your time.
why not, that’s half the fun
do you know if I can still use @daily in cron.d/*
claudio`: sure it is .. it gets rid of the warning
whats the difference between sudo and su ?
i mean just one runs one command ?
manpage says yes.
abrotman, hehe, I only need to see what a script between servers does… I trust my people
is he still harping on those totally unimportant warnings from the kernel build?
sudo prompts for user password, *not* root password.
no …
strace ?
It’s also configurable via /etc/sudoers to a pretty fine level.
abrotman, package ?
strace
ah
su runs another shell, sudo just lets you run individual commands
abrotman, wow, that can be it indeed
so su gets you good stuff like a proper PATH etc.
that is not accurate, “su” runs whatever you tell it to
su can run just one command also
not necessarily a shell
and sudo can inherit the env also
selectively, even
You can do that with sudo: sudo -i
thats’s what I use typically
whats different between sulogin and sudo ?
read the man pages
sulogin is a longer word
huh?
so same thing ?
that was a joke
read the man pages
what abrotman said
!tell linuxtk10 about grounding
i am readign the man page
still not clear to me if they are 2 of the same
no they are not
read them again
200.
hahah
how do i change permissions on folers and all files in that folder with one command?
man chmod
folders*
and files also ?
!folder
folder is a directory damn it! near My Computer and Network Neighborhood… or the things you put in a filing cabinet. IMAP protocol’s mailboxes.
f00li5h, wassa goin awn?
files within the folder
man chmod
explody, no luck. version numbers match, reverse lookups match
how can I revert back to a stable release ? my listed repositories in sources.list were “unstable & testing” sources. box is runing a local HD install of Auditor live cd , which is based on debian
i told you .. you can’t
on each box I can log in using my kerb password but the login doesnt happen automatically
kdc logs show nothing out of the ordinary
i bet it has something to do with gssapi-with-mic or something
Stupid question… is there a “master” LaTeX package that installs everything I need to use LaTeX?
try ssh-ing to both “host” and “host.domain.com” see if one works
my syslog.conf is the default, perhaps it’s just shorewall that’s dumping crap
texlive maybe ?
it’s a super common error and it almost always means some name somewhere is out of whack
abrotman, but there must b a way? :/
no .. there is not a way
explody, yeah
kerberos is very touchy
iptables will do that. checked out /msg dpkg printk yet?
i did, but i didn’t do anything with it
i was still rummaging in syslog.conf
abrotman, what will happen if I simply edit rep. list and add debian 3.1 repository to it , and retry ?
I did have something like that on the previous incarnation of this system
it works
first of all 3.1 isn’t stable .. secondly .. i already told you .. you don’t believe .. do it anyways .. not my box
don’t believe me
hmm
as usual no answers here
abrotman, and what you consider as a stable release ?
explody, on each host I can log in using the kerb password…
very frustrating.
but not with ssh…
if you want to try it .. go ahead …
no answers handed to you on a silver plate you mean
abrotman, I`m really asking to learn ! don`t think bad
explody, yes, I can type ssh hostname and enter my kerb password.
debian.org .. start reading
ok that’s odd
What is texlive?
TeX Live: A decent selection of the TeX Live packages
That’s not very helpful.
explody, what all should I have to do to get it working?
where do I set kernel.printk?
That’s like saying Debian is a collection of Debian packages.
why i cant do mv Linux linux host ?
read factoid again (i think it has the gory details)
moment .. i’ll find the URL
just get my krb5.conf, krb5.keytab, install ssh-krb5, modify the configs to allow gssapi and kerberos auth
Are you on a fat filesystem?
it tells me to read dos for sysctl
i figure nothing’s wrong with the keytabs because it does auth me against my kerb password.
They’re not case sensitive.
and to check a file in my kernel sources
ssh-krb5 is just a meta-package; enable the gssapi stuff in sshd_config
/etc/sysctl.conf; when you’re done, sysctl -p
simonrvn, already did.
http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2007/06/msg00169.html
thank you!
format: foo.bar (or foo/bar) = value
Thanks
kernel.printk = 4 4 1 7
np
this is defaulted and commented out, is that a sensible value?
put it at 3 4 1 7
and uncomment
bah. wife’s a callin
explody, thanks for the help.
laters.
sysctl just printed kernel.printk = 3 4 1 7 and exited 0, does that mean it worked?

running ldconfig will probably fix it ;p

ok, the thing that’s about to go eat some of its food over there is aware that that was sad
What does it mean when i look at a directory with ls -al as user www-data and i see ?———-? ? ? ? in place of the permissions. Everything looks normal as root.
it’s broken
what do i do?
is there an easy command to add and remove /sbin/nologin from a user ?
hi all

I just googled saved by the bell and it was like being back in jr. high again lol
look man

try chsh
stoned, are you not tired being stoned every day ? OK, you can see it otherwise maybe… when we are stoned… it[ the same when you feel clean
jamonation, ok
dunno if that lets you add nologin, but if you change a shell, that will remove nologin if it's present
I'm sorry, did you say something?
how to block Yahoo chat? my boss want me to block yahoo chat during working hour, and i think it could be done using iptables (we are using debian as the router here)... but it does not work even i block port 5000-5050, block access to login.yahoo.com (except port 80/443). can you please help to tell how to block yahoo?
5 again here... than you get such stuff... yeah I think I had a brainfart
what are you talking about?
stoned, nm
omg
stoned ?
now you see why this is my nickname
*Never Mind
in fact, with that ports and some cxx.msc.yahoo.com blocked... Gaim is indeed block... but not the windoze based yahoo messenger
how fix this error ?
?
stoned, hehe
what would cause famd to eat 99% cpu on a quad core system?
triplc, you should filter any domain that messenger try to connect ,not only protocol ports
hey anyone have use kdialog? I want to figure out how to use the --embed option
stoned, can you also program in twice the speed normal people do ?
(sorry to ask the question of block chatting, we are all like chatting)
I'm having problems with mouse sensitivity, i've done synclient -l to view the settings but can't figure out which settings are required to increase sensitivity. Google yeilded no useful results
I can name all planets in under half a second.
how to detect domain? because the iptabes does not work on domain host name (like squid)
is there any libpcre.so on your system ?
mvemjsnup.
hmm, do I really need famd in the first place?
use wireshark to take a look
abrotman i don`t know
so find out
how ?
!tell root1 about root
look ?
i did try to use wireshark... and see that client check login.yahoo.com
then I block that login, and it dies
but by blocking login.... the yahoo mail dies too
take away admin rights on the desktops ?
people still need email
when I plug in my external harddisk through USB, it is detected but not automounted. what might be wrong ?
you might have forgotten to plug the power in
oh wait, i didn't read what you said
vfat isnt auto mounted in debian
^^^
it is if you set it up
"if"
the external disk is formatted ext3
ah ok
gnome-volume-manager or somesuch
have you installed any auto mounters yet?
I run KDE ?
sec, ill see which one I use
KDE has its own
ya, but that should compliment a real non X one
yes because when I plug in a CD or a PEN it works but the disk ?
so don't block the auth server, block the dedicated ip of the messenger server(s)?
they all use hal these days afaik
oh the joy of having 10 of everything.....
media and drives are considered to be different things probably
is there a way to rollback a package that is half installed with an unmet dependency
ok, i'll check with wireshark again
flash pen is that media ? it is disk too ...
when does .22 go into testing?
i don't know what your "volume manager"/whatever thinks it is :/
well, i swore I used usbmount, but i dont seem to have it installed
When i look at a directory with ls -al as user www-data and i see ?----------? ? ? ? in place of the permissions. Everything looks normal as root but I get ???? as every other user. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
What did I do now?
uh... that usually means that something is wrong with your filesystem or you've got selinux or something else which is not allowing you to see what they are
so I need some helper program ?
no selinux. everything has been normal for some time, this just happened today for the first time.
yeah, I'd suspect filesystem corruption
apt-get install usbmount perhaps help you? seems there are a few of them that do the same though.
trying now
hmmm, as suspected, i _did_ have usbmount installed on 06-28 2007
it would appear its been "removed"
Why would anyone need a trouble daemon?
log location for apt related installs/uninstalls plz?
the question is, why wouldn't you need one?
it was a typo man. Thanks for your time
Ah.
/var/log/dpkg.log or /var/log/aptitude
What was the nature of the typo?
Nobody knows the troubled I've seen.
thanks don. although I suspect that was my last install...better safe to check though. never know

I'm trying to upgrade a sarge box, but the upgrade got cancelled part way through, and now I have a kernel-image stuck with a dependency on initrd-tools. Is there a way to roll back to the old kernel?
I can't seem to get initrd-tools installed.
Rule 1: don't uninstall working kernels.
why did it cancel ?
Rule #2: Just reinstall the prior kernel.
ok, as I figured, i reinstalled a week later
You *can* uninstall working kernels after you've confirmed the replacement works properly, natch. Keep a boot disk (knoppix, lnx-bbc, etc.) around to recover as needed.
how can I restart ssh?
but it said that it wasn't available. I think this came down in a repository update.
/etc/init.d/ssh doesnt exist
/etc/init.d/ssh restart
lucky for me this is a remote box.
openssh or something
nm im thinkin openbsd-inetd, it should be ssh if its installed
what happened to your initi script?
it wasn't called 'ssh' in sarge
its here
this is etch
I have a script that dumps global and local crontabs into a file for cron.d and I had left out the user specification on the local crontab.
or unlucky for me, as it were.
Anyone know where to get dual monitor backgrounds or widescreen photos?
4chan
Is what happned here that the old kernal was obsoleted from the apt-source list that I recieved when I ran apt-get update?
dual monitor, dunno. try http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/index.php for some widescreen though
usbmount is not what I need. It looks like the hald should request the mount but it does not
im running rdesktop, is there a way to transfer files that way like you can between windows system from a windows system to a linux system?
cool site, thanks!
usbmount does and will auto mount usb devices (although not vfat by default). surely if a mount shows up in mtab, KDE should pick that up? or is your kde whats borked?
it looks like the KDE has fsck-ed
rdesktop --help and look at -r
ok
wimpies, go to sleep
and in general RTFM before asking
SerajewelKS, yeah, that might help
I prefer to take them myself
you can resize wallpapers w/ most good image host tools (eg: GIMP).
yeah, I can't affor a nice camera
yeah, I have used gimp a decent amount, but there is nothing like a widescreen photo in hi res underneath 20 linux terminals =]
how can I setup CUPS via the command line?
I just need it to become a webserver at port 631 so I can configure my printer
elinks http://127.0.0.1:xyz/
http://pastebin.com/d54aab667 if anyone has any suggestions on the best path to take, it would be greatly appreciated.
Does the rsync client follow a configuration file or is that just rsyncd?
just the daemon i believe
Thanks.

neat. turn on indexing in that dir so I can see more?
has anyone got admin access to a cpanel box?
Nope
normal user access, but no where near admin unfortunately Let me guess, hosting issues?
got a friend with broken mail, troubled
trying to debug it blingly
heh
*blindly
fair enough =]
well, my cpanel is for email as well. although i have no idea how similar the setups would be.
When does .22 go into testing?

hi all…..anybody could give me a good sources.list?
good for what purpose, IgorSobreira

there mine but it’s not overly exciting ^^
heh
ok..
!tell IgorSobreira about sources.list
well…ive just installed debian…never used before…im looking for some apps and need to configure my wireless…
wtf is that?! =] Speaking of which, where is a good place to start looking for information on purchasing and installing an lcd like that?
i made a firewall script but i cant get it to run at boot time….i want it to run at the end but it needs to be ran before the login screen for console only…no X
!tell en1gma about run at startup
i know it needs added in /etc/rc.local but what is the syntax to make it execure ./etc/network/firewall
Can anyone help me with the Debian install of mediawiki? I want to put the wiki hosting at the root of the server, and get short urls
“That” is a pretty much totally fabricated image, in Gimp, with the exception of the display.
you could always just modify the default url rewrite rule for debian-default to go to /mediawiki perhaps?
Increment the counter (no number, just drop the digit) from 2-6 to see the set.
./etc/init.d/ runs to early it needs to be ran with /etc/rc.local but i dont know the syntax to make it run “/etc/network/firewall”
I found the display as an image on some website and was messing with the Gimp at the time. Another pair of images taht are kinda cool…
wtf
http://linuxmafia.com/~karsten/Images/whiteboatrock-after.png http://linuxmafia.com/~karsten/Images/whiteboatrock-before.png
Do them in the “after” then “before” order for best effect.
not sure what breakage could occur if you were to modify the wiki alias to /. but if you wanna try, vim /etc/mediawiki1.7/apache.conf and restart apache
i put in the /etc/rc.local this “exit 0″ “./etc/network/firewall” but it dont run it…i even made “etc/network/firewall” executable
http://zinx.xmms.org/misc/ff-wallpaper-01.png
so i need to get the internet from wlan0 on this computer through eth0 and into eth0 on another computer, do i need crossover cable?
paste your whole file to a pastebin perhaps?
I’ve gotten it ok with simply modifying the ServerRoot to /var/lib/mediawiki1.7, but I don’t get short urls.
what does it need to be so it “/etc/rc.local” will run “/etc/network/firewall”
all i need to know is what do i put in “/etc/rc.local” to make it run “/etc/network/firewall”
well, that apache.conf file in the wiki dir has the alias. just dont know if its a good way to do it. I think you would be better off doing something similar to what debian does to / by default, it uses an ^/$ rule rewrite to redirect you to /mediawiki.
Yeah, but did you do that yourself?
Ah. Took uot the watermark stuff.
../etc/rc.local = a script. does anyone know what i need to put in that script to make it execute “/etc/network/firewall”
took a year to download, but that is pretty good man
Yes (not the original, obviously, but the changed one)
/etc/apache/sites-available/default, edit the “RedirectMatch ^/$ /apache2-default/” to be “/mediawiki/” instead
anyone?
also http://zinx.xmms.org/misc/tmp/scammernic.jpg though i don’t think i have the original for that
so you can’t really compare :/
tileable: http://linuxmafia.com/~karsten/Images/whiteboatrock-marstile.png
file /etc/network/firewall
chances are its not a bash script, or not executable
Yeah, which looks ugly :/ I don’t want http://server/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page, I want http://server/Main_Page
what do i need to install for x86_64 JRE?
cause i installed it not too long ago yet iceweasel is saying “click here to download plugin”
whats the smack for? binary in /etc? or should it be iptables-load instead?
Hi, I am borrowing a friends Sony Digital Handycam and have connected it to my machine by firewire (a /dev/raw1394 was created). How do I access the video on this device? software…
you should know better
try the /etc/mediawiki1.7/apache.conf then and try alias it to / instead. not sure if that works though
so know one in here is going to tell me the syntax to make /etc/rc.local execute a firewall script located at /etc/network/firewall?
i mean fucking come on
well, to be honest, I have no idea what that file he has in there is yet. short cuts
does the script work when run manually ?
yes
all i need to know is what do i put in /etc/rc.local
sheesh
the full path to the script
then just: /etc/somedir/somefile
i do
That would, at best, give me http://server/index.php/Main_Page, and I want http://server/Main_Page
i tried it with /etc/network/firewall and ./etc/network/firewall
let me copy and paste the info on pastebin
1 min
is it feasible to install debian with a minimalistic X11 environment on a 1gig flash drive?
i thought i wasnt putting the command in correct…didnt know i was doing it correct…so that means something is wrong in the firewall script itself
but it does run manually fine
Yes
ah, i think i know what you mean. not sure if mediawiki has a way alter that, or if its done with pure apache config
When does the.22 kernel go into testing?
!why is linux-image-2.6.22-1-686 not in testing
linux-image-2.6.22-1-686 is not in testing for the reasons listed in http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=linux-image-2.6.22-1-686
There’s a very messy page on the mediawiki wiki about doing it, but none of it covers Debian, and none of it works :/
yeah .. that’s a lot of stuff
do you know if this is common enough to merit a wiki page or a howto? or do I just treat it like a normal install?
that massive list of text makes zero sense to me
i assume you would like to avoid manually copying the files to /var/www as well?
roughly translated … “not for awhile”
omg i dont think /etc/rc.local is executable
my bad
it’s not supposed to be
its read by the init script
/etc/init.d/rc.local
what is a while?
oh so it dont need to be executable?
it says in its info to set the bits to make it execute
could be days or weeks .. depends how quickly all that stuff is worked out .. i’d say a week or more
I don’t mind doing that
It just as easy as setting to ServerRoot to /var/lib/mediawiki1.7
dont do that
its mentioned in the docs
do i put the ‘/etc/network/firewall’ command before the “exit 0″ or after it
There are stock USB distros.
before
true
k thanks
do i need to make /etc/rc.local executable with chmod 770 /etc/rc.local
and these distros would allow me to follow lenny?
http://lwn.net/Distributions and search for “usb”. DSL can be installed on USB 110 MB or greater.
dunno.
liable do i need to make /etc/rc.local executable with chmod 770 /etc/rc.local
http://wiki.debian.org/USB-HD_Boot_Full_Debian might help?
i dont think so. read the docs for it
Also http://wiki.debian.org/USBKeyDistro
Where in the docs?
k will try it again….but i think i tried it this way already but i might have tried it with ./etc/network/firewall instead of /etc/network/firewall

how does the version of xserver-xorg compare to x.org version ?
?
really awful quote from your hosting :X
Favorably.
1.3 is the current server version. 7.2 is the current X.org katamari version. They’re uncoupled.
pi?
??
there is no coorelation ?
Not any more. With 1.3 it’s been uncoupled for the first time
so now we’re confused?
how do we go to say .. ati.com and get xorg binary crap drivers ?
Ah, thanks. That has some nice instructions on short urls too
ya, np
“we”?
Fuck if I know.
i just meant how do we compare 1.3 to the xorg version number
i guess there isn’t a way
It’s post-7.2
pre-7.3
“Never never never install mediawiki directly under the document root. Install it under $DOCROOT/mediawiki or something, then follow the directions below for pretty URLs. Some instructions on pretty URLs say to install directly under the document root. That is error-prone and complex.”
7.3 will have x server hosting 1.4
trial and error!
oh ok
someone was asking the other night ..
The X.org katamari releases are basically just rolling up whatever the current versions are of all the stuff and saying “here it is!”
will it be stars or a planet ?
With modular, there’s any number of interim releases of the individual components. Whenever you want to do a release, you just do one
Have you seen it? It’s a freakin’ planet
ya, seems like rewrites are the way to go
hehe
wtf is this planet talk with xorg?
katamari!
Yeah, I couldn’t find a clear guide to doing so.

right
yes you would get a console
but a console is a lovely thing
it’s very simple very small amount of code running.
that or /proc/pid/status might be more what you want
what i like about webmin is that it has a conole input box AND a neat looking java filemanager

To get write access to a vfat partition when mounting it with fstab, use the line “/dev/partition /mount/point vfat defaults,uid=USERID,gid=GROUPID,umask=002 0 0″ in /etc/fstab. umask=002 will make the partition rwxrwxr-x, while umask=022 will make it rwxr-xr-x. umask 000 was enough
what kind of app needs access to it?
pool/non-free/s/sun-java6/sun-java6-jdk_6-02-1_i386.deb
thinking suid the app to root instead or sgid disk it
oh freaking h**l, apache2 is refusing to work with php
still not great security, but better than the user with full disk access
craigevil, well…is it the url? O_o
dvgrab – it as a firewire connected camcorder.
troubled, this is very detailed. Thanks
I want to grab the video for compilation in kino
it broke after you did the rewrite rules?
well, i would say sgid disk the dvgrab rather than suid root it. either way it would have full access to the disk. or, if you really only use it for that one purpose, just edit the udev for it and set to to a group like video and add yourself a member, probably the best choice (not that your gonna root your own box or anything
sorry, umask more a generic. but i have strong feelings with making a dir wide open for every account on a box, nobody and www-data included
thanks
I like the alteration of udev for that
np
troubled, I’m trying to determine the RAM usage of netcat…
troubled, it is so small that is almost undetectable
cat /proc/`pidof netcat`/status
troubled, I’m reading that… there are many data… which one I should consider the value ? VmSize ?
No, I purged everything and started from blank. and now it thinks a php file is a download
i believe so, not 100% though
I see that the /dev/dv1394 is set up for group video and it calls raw1394 but 1394 is nowhere in the udev structure. I guess I will need to add it…
hi
I tried downloading something from apt
and I got this:
please insert the disc labeled
‘Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r1 _Etch_ – Official i386 NETINST Binary-1 20070820-20:21
did you install php mod again?
problem is, I dont have the cd.
any help?
found it…
When I installed mediawiki1.7 it istalled it as a dependency.
switch to a internet mirror and comment out that file in /etc/apt/sources.list
you will need to apt-get update/aptitude update after you edit though
how do I do that?
a text editor is usually the prefered way (try nano or vim)
libapache2-mod-php5 is installes
ok, how do I “switch to a internet mirror”?
you may already have one setup in that file. take a look first. it may simply be asking for the cd since its “closer” than an internet mirror
so I need a repo right?
ok, I altered an entry in the /etc/udev/permissions.rules to give raw1394 root:video permissions but I still see it load as root:disk. Does udev need to be restarted before changes take effect?
how about you paste your /etc/apt/sources.list file to pastebin.ca for us to check what you need to do
ok
yes, but I believe there is a udevtrigger command that might do that for you. not sure which way it uses. worst case just reboot
http://pastebin.org/1336
would anyone be able to suggest software that I can use to capture video from my s-video input (Hauppaugge pvr150)
perhaps try /etc/init.d/udev reload?
ok, your all set, just put a # in front of the “deb cdrom” line and save and update/install
ok I did apt-get update, thanks a lot.
Hey guys.. sorry to ask this in here but the Squid channel is dead I think. Are there any other channels relating to Squid other than #squid ?
